The MSc Engineering Management course has been specifically designed to allow you to update, extend and deepen your understanding of engineering and management.

You will build on your current knowledge of subjects such as solid modelling and prototyping, computer aided design and engineering data analysis, whilst developing management and entrepreneurial skills that will enhance your career opportunities within engineering and the broader business environment.

In the second year, for one semester, you’ll undertake an internship, study in another country or join a research group. This valuable experience will enhance your employability and further develop your theoretical and practical skills.

Internship

This option offers the opportunity to spend three months working full-time in one of the many companies/industries with which we have close links. You may be able to extend this over more than one semester in cases where it is adjacent to a vacation period. We will endeavour to help those who prefer this option to find and secure a suitable position but ultimately we are in the hands of the employers who are free to decide who they take into their organisation.

Research

If you take this option, you will be assigned to our Engineering, Physics and Materials Research Group. There is every possibility that you may contribute to published research and therefore you may be named as part of the research team, which would be a great start to a research career.

Study Abroad

We have exchange agreements with universities all over the world, including partners in Europe, Asia, the Americas and Oceania. If you take the Study Abroad option you will spend a semester at one of these partners, continuing your studies in English but in a new cultural and learning environment. Please note that this option may require you to obtain a visa for study in the other country.

This course incorporates six taught modules: research methods, project, programme and portfolio management; project change, risk and opportunities management; technology entrepreneurship and product development; engineering management data analysis and sustainable development for engineering practitioners.

Throughout the duration of this course you will build core skills in key areas such as management, business, finance and computing, providing you with a strong understanding of the day-to-day processes that underpin the smooth running of a successful organisation.

This course is primarily delivered by lectures and supporting seminars such as guided laboratory workshops or staffed tutorials. Assessments are undertaken in the form of exams, assignments, technical reports, presentations and project work. The Advanced Practice semester will be assessed via a report and presentation about your internship, study abroad or research group activities.

On completion of all taught modules you will undertake a substantial piece of research around a subject of particular interest to you and your own career aspirations.

Water, Waste and Environmental Engineering has been traditionally referred to as public health engineering in the United Kingdom. In this postgraduate course, the technical aspects of both natural and engineering environmental systems will be covered. There will be broad interdisciplinary subjects synthesizing knowledge from a wide spectrum of science and engineering, expanding the content of public health engineering, which in the UK has traditionally been responsible for developing the infrastructure for managing water and waste.

Students will develop engineering skills and be able to design, develop and apply concepts for water and waste as a resource based on environmental sensitivity and be competent in planning, modelling, design, construction, operations, maintenance and control of both engineered and natural water and earth resources.

Fees and finance

Your time at university should be enjoyable and rewarding, and it is important that it is not spoilt by unnecessary financial worries. We recommend that you spend time planning your finances, both before coming to university and while you are here. Teaching and learning

The number of contact hours (e.g. lectures, seminars and feedback on assignments) per module/course ranges from 50-75 hours for the one year full time programme or roughly equivalent to four hours per week per module. The expected self-study time is approximately 80-90 hours per module per year (roughly equivalent to four hours per week per module).

You will be taught by academics with a range of industrial and academia experience for each module.

Assessment

Project work, assignments and laboratory exercises in addition to substantial written examination of course materials will occur in most modules. The Environmental Engineering Research Project will require submission of a substantial final report/dissertation. Assessment of this module will involve participation in a poster and seminar presentation and a final oral examination.

Professional recognition

Accreditation will be sought from the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM) and The Joint Board of Moderators (JBM) including the Institution of Civil Engineers, The Institution of Structural Engineers, the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation and Institute of Highway Engineers.

The course has been meticulously designed to meet the demands of the sector and to tackle a full range of topics. Specifically, the course offers a dynamic mix of theoretical and practical elements required for effective financial management and investment decision making within the oil and gas industry. The MSc Oil and Gas Finance builds on RGU’s multidisciplinary expertise across the oil and gas value chain to explore the role of the finance and investment function within this spectrum as a means for creating value.

In Semester 1 students study two generic finance modules and two additional modules to provide quantitative finance basis and an understanding of specific corporate finance considerations for the oil and gas industry. Semester 2 further develops the finance and industry specific skills. The skills required for an extensive study into a particular aspect of oil and gas finance will also be developed during this semester. These are essential in Semester 3 when each student will be required to prepare and produce a self-directed dissertation.

Course Benefits

You will gain knowledge and practical skills in financial modelling, analysis, synthesis, evaluation and problem solving, through active simulation assignments and group discussions in seminars and tutorials culminating in the dissertation. We aim to produce independent thinkers who are ready and able to address the complexities and challenges of oil and gas finance faced by organisations. In collaboration with RGU’s International Oil and Gas Institute and the oil and gas industry in Aberdeen, this course is a suitably paced curriculum for providing students with the means for acquiring these relevant knowledge and skills. • Demonstrate knowledge and critical understanding of appropriate analytical and modelling tools, mechanisms and markets for securing finance (through equity, debt or other suitable vehicles), optimising return and minimising risk in oil and gas investments (including derivatives).

• Demonstrate extensive detailed knowledge of the oil and gas industry data and information sources (in context within the full energy spectrum) and relevant research methods for generating and communicating original, academic, professional or practical and creative solutions to problems and issues in the area of finance.

• Critically appraise and capture the implications of complexities of oil and gas industry’s cost sharing arrangements, joint venture agreements, tax rules, environmental regulations, economic/fiscal arrangements and financial reporting standards and the international dimension of these issues in the financing/investing decision.

• Develop and authoritatively use financial tools and methodologies to extend knowledge of and critically evaluate issues in the international oil and gas industry.

This MSc programme provides its students with an opportunity to extend the technical knowledge acquired on an undergraduate degree programme in mechanical or manufacturing engineering.

Though not a specialist Master's degree, the programme provides a broad subject-specific curriculum that provides an opportunity for students to tailor the programme to meet their personal needs, with specialism pursued through a major project.

Many of these projects reflect the key research interests of the Department, such as manufacturing, bulk materials handling and instrumentation. However, projects can be selected from across the discipline from a list provided by the Department. Many projects are derived from our industrial links, and a number are proposed by students, reflecting their personal interests or experience.

Elements of practical work will be carried out in the Business School’s dedicated Bloomberg Lab. The virtual trading platform allows you to access and engage with market data through practical case studies and the use of online databases. As this is a new course starting in 2014/15, accreditation by IMechE is expected (as has been obtained for the Advanced Mechanical Engineering course), after it has been operational for one year.

IELTS - minimum overall band score of 6.5 (no individual test score below 5.5) or TOEFL iBT minimum total score of 95 (minimum scores of Listening-17, Writing-19, Reading and Speaking-20). Both tests are valid for two years.
