The MSc Engineering Management course has been specifically designed to allow you to update, extend and deepen your understanding of engineering and management.

You will build on your current knowledge of subjects such as solid modelling and prototyping, computer aided design and engineering data analysis, whilst developing management and entrepreneurial skills that will enhance your career opportunities within engineering and the broader business environment.

In the second year, for one semester, you’ll undertake an internship, study in another country or join a research group. This valuable experience will enhance your employability and further develop your theoretical and practical skills.

Internship

This option offers the opportunity to spend three months working full-time in one of the many companies/industries with which we have close links. You may be able to extend this over more than one semester in cases where it is adjacent to a vacation period. We will endeavour to help those who prefer this option to find and secure a suitable position but ultimately we are in the hands of the employers who are free to decide who they take into their organisation.

Research

If you take this option, you will be assigned to our Engineering, Physics and Materials Research Group. There is every possibility that you may contribute to published research and therefore you may be named as part of the research team, which would be a great start to a research career.

Study Abroad

The ICMA Centre’s financial engineering degree is highly respected by quantitative analysts and their employers. The credit crunch and subsequent events have emphasised the need to develop better pricing and better hedging models for all complex products. The practical and quantitative skills that you will develop on the programme will equip you to meet this challenge.

Our compulsory modules provide a firm grounding in probability theory, stochastic calculus, derivatives pricing, quantitative and numerical methods, structuring products, volatility analysis, and the modelling of credit, equity, foreign exchange and interest rate derivatives. We also provide a thorough training in C++ and other programming tools.

Optional modules will allow you to focus on risk analysis, portfolio management, designing trading strategies or econometric analysis. This newly structured degree aims to further enhance the strong reputation of its precursor – the MSc in Financial Engineering and Quantitative Analysis, which was established back in 1999. Careers

Many of our financial engineering graduates are now working as Quants in large London banks and other financial institutions. Others have pursued PhDs and have successful academic careers. Financial instruments are becoming ever more sophisticated, so graduates that understand complex modelling techniques are always in great demand. The high quantitative content of this programme opens many doors to a wide range of careers. You could structure and develop new debt or equity solutions to meet clients funding and hedging needs, or you could become a proprietary trader in exotic derivatives, or a software specialist or a quantitative analyst supporting the traders.

There are excellent opportunities on the buy-side, with hedge funds and investment institutions, as well as in investment banking and in software analytics. Opportunities in quantitative research, or with a rating agency, are among the many other attractive alternatives. Outside of mainstream banking and investment, you might also consider firms involved in commodity and energy trading, or the treasury divisions of leading multinationals and management consultancies.

Whilst Safety and Reliability Engineering allows you to apply your skills and knowledge to a wider range of industries, this programme is specifically for the oil and gas industry. It provides you with the knowledge to review reliability of engineering facilities, materials and products and legislative framework at the same time. Safety has always been of paramount concern in the oil and gas industry with a lot of learning and knowledge acquired since the oil industry growth of the 1970s. This knowledge has been scrutinised by University of Aberdeen and the industry to provide professional expertise to manage safety and reliability. Future challenges are being met to some extent by the advent of affordable sensors which manage difficult to reach places, but nonetheless require the knowledge and capabilities of professionals working in this discipline to ensure they are fit for purpose.

The MSc Safety Engineering for Oil & Gas programme provides training in safety engineering, reliability engineering, and loss prevention in the offshore, nuclear, transport, aerospace and process industries and more. Water, Waste and Environmental Engineering has been traditionally referred to as public health engineering in the United Kingdom. In this postgraduate course, the technical aspects of both natural and engineering environmental systems will be covered. There will be broad interdisciplinary subjects synthesizing knowledge from a wide spectrum of science and engineering, expanding the content of public health engineering, which in the UK has traditionally been responsible for developing the infrastructure for managing water and waste.

Fees and finance

Your time at university should be enjoyable and rewarding, and it is important that it is not spoilt by unnecessary financial worries. We recommend that you spend time planning your finances, both before coming to university and while you are here. Teaching and learning

The number of contact hours (e.g. lectures, seminars and feedback on assignments) per module/course ranges from 50-75 hours for the one year full time programme or roughly equivalent to four hours per week per module. The expected self-study time is approximately 80-90 hours per module per year (roughly equivalent to four hours per week per module).

You will be taught by academics with a range of industrial and academia experience for each module.

Assessment

Project work, assignments and laboratory exercises in addition to substantial written examination of course materials will occur in most modules. The Environmental Engineering Research Project will require submission of a substantial final report/dissertation. Assessment of this module will involve participation in a poster and seminar presentation and a final oral examination.

Professional recognition

Accreditation will be sought from the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM) and The Joint Board of Moderators (JBM) including the Institution of Civil Engineers, The Institution of Structural Engineers, the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation and Institute of Highway Engineers.

The course has been meticulously designed to meet the demands of the sector and to tackle a full range of topics. Specifically, the course offers a dynamic mix of theoretical and practical elements required for effective financial management and investment decision making within the oil and gas industry. The MSc Oil and Gas Finance builds on RGU’s multidisciplinary expertise across the oil and gas value chain to explore the role of the finance and investment function within this spectrum as a means for creating value.

In Semester 1 students study two generic finance modules and two additional modules to provide quantitative finance basis and an understanding of specific corporate finance considerations for the oil and gas industry. Semester 2 further develops the finance and industry specific skills. The skills required for an extensive study into a particular aspect of oil and gas finance will also be developed during this semester. These are essential in Semester 3 when each student will be required to prepare and produce a self-directed dissertation.

This programme is delivered online to allow you to study flexibly from remote locations and anywhere in the world with internet access. If you are interested in working in the oil and gas industry and you have a science or engineering background you might want to consider Oil and Gas Engineering at Master's degree level. This qualification takes you across the full life cycle of production and it contains quite a few employable elements and modules in themselves giving you a wide variety of skills and knowledge to take with you into employment. You will often work with other specialists on offshore drilling platforms and facilities recording information on drilling, researching the most productive areas, ensuring maintenance and health and safety and a constant flow from a well. You also oversee some of the decommissioning aspects to redundant equipment on site.

This is a highly specialised area of oil and gas engineering in which you learn the discipline and wider areas that feed into it. You are taught by industry respected researchers and academics who have followed the oil and gas industry since the 1970s and its inception in Aberdeen city. Aberdeen is at the heart of the oil and gas industry in Europe and is known worldwide as a major energy hub.

Reservoir Engineering is a highly specialised but essential part of upstream oil and gas extraction process. It requires detailed knowledge of geology, performance and management of reserves. Often these reserves are deep in oceans or land and in very difficult and hard to reach locations with complex geology  so it is essential to have a high degree of skills and knowledge to understand how best these reserves can be tapped into in critically sensitive environments.

There is a recognised, global shortage of practitioners in the area of reservoir engineering which is addressed by the programme. You study a wide spectrum of reservoir phenomena, and to evaluate them in the context of petroleum engineering and cognate areas of petroleum Geoscience, within the economic context of the hydrocarbon industry. You have employment options worldwide in the oil and gas industry with plenty of options to travel to growth markets and untapped areas of reserves within multinationals and consultancies.
