After completion of the programme you will be well equipped with the knowledge for a successful career in the shipping/ transportation industries, as well as in the wider finance sector.

On average more than 90% of our graduates are in work or further education 6 months after graduation.

Indicative career paths for our graduates are ship-owning and transportation companies, ship-broking/chartering firms, shipping divisions of investment banks, shipping analysis/consulting firms, ship-finance arrangers, port operators, and shipping-related investment funds, among others. Accreditation

The course is accredited by the Energy Institute and fulfils the learning requirement for Chartered Engineer status.

Placements

There is no formal requirement to do an industry-based placement as part of the programme. However, some students arrange to undertake their dissertation research within a company or within their part of the world. A recent student investigated the future of coal-fired generation in Turkey, and another student is combining a work placement at The World Energy Council with their dissertation.

Teaching and learning

Teaching is organised into modules comprising four consecutive day courses taken at a rate of one a month or so. This format makes the programme accessible for students who want to study part-time while working. Full-time students are also welcome.

Whether you choose to take the course as a part-time or full-time student, we will offer a great deal of support when it comes to helping you prepare for the modules and project work. You will be expected to devote a significant part of your non-taught hours to project work as well as private study.

Our course is led by an exceptional group of experts in energy, supply, demand management and policies. As an example, one of our module leaders leads the UK contribution to writing international energy management standards and informing policy through the European Sector Forum for Energy Management. This forum looks at methodologies across the continent.

There is also input to global standards development through the International Standards Organisation (ISO). At City we bring on board people with well-established academic careers, as well as leaders from the energy industry. The programme has strong links with industry and commerce and involves many visiting lecturers who hold senior positions in their fields.

You will be assessed by examination on the four core modules and you will need to complete a post modular assessment (a 2,000 to 3,000-word essay) on all of the eight modules.

Modules

You will take four core modules and have six elective modules from which you can choose four topics from diverse subjects relating to energy supply and demand.

Each course module is taught over four consecutive days of teaching with one module each month. Alongside the teaching, you will have coursework to complete for each module. The modules run from October to April, and in the remaining time, you will concentrate on your dissertation, which forms a significant part of the programme.

You are normally required to complete all the taught modules successfully before progressing to the dissertation.

The dissertation gives you the opportunity to create your own questions and to decide on your own area of interest. It should be a detailed investigation into a subject on energy supply and/or demand, with your own analysis and conclusions outlining the way forward. You may see the focus of your dissertation as a future career path, but whatever your area of study, these final few months of the degree should embody your vision of the future.

If you are interested in sustainability, you have the option of taking up to two elective modules from the MSc in Environmental Strategy offered by the University of Surrey.

Your programme of study

Are you interested in where we source our future energy and how we protect what we have now and in the future? Do you have environmental concerns about how energy is extracted and what regulation is in place to prevent damage to the environment?  This programme focuses on two main interlinked areas within energy management of politics and law.  Within the political setting you understand regulation as you do in the legal setting but you look at policies, regulation and interdependencies and relationships globally to understand how risk, security and future policy may alter and how this then translates in law. There is a heightened senses of awareness now within energy and climate and an increased sense of urgency about pollution controls and concerns about energy reserves.  This is set within a volatile political and social environment in many countries some of whom supply energy globally. You look at historical oil crisis, security, and politics and you connect this to environmental regulation systems, and the different legal systems and approaches in law.

This programme gives you a wide breadth of skills and knowledge in an essential area of the energy industry, both upstream and downstream, commercial and domestic globally. You are taught in the energy capital of Europe in Aberdeen city, home to a multitude of FTSE 100 companies from the energy industry and you learn from both its learning's and that of academics who follow it closely at Aberdeen. There is a lot of historic case law and knowledge gained from the energy industry which has influenced energy law over time and much of it has related to the tightening of mechanisms and regulation to prevent environmental damage from occurring. There are also economic influences on the energy industry which can rapidly alter the economics of countries when suppliers change prices, lower or raise production or change group agreements. Even within the domestic market energy suppliers continue to influence the prices we pay for our domestic energy which can in turn affect domestic economics within countries.

You can work as a lawyer or regulator across the supply chain from source to domestic energy or you can work as a consultant or advisor within policy. Within the energy industry itself you can be a vital part of project initiation in understanding policy, guidance, risks and laws to support growth alongside social and legal responsibility to ensure integrity in all areas of energy extraction.

Energy law is a specialist area which is mainly concerned with the huge risks involved in extracting energy within wild and remote environments and dealing with waste products, removal of facilities, implementation of new facilities and operations with environment at the forefront of business operations. There are huge implications for corporate and social responsibility and the energy industry sees it as imperative that they get their regulation and responsibilities right. The negative effects of getting regulation wrong can be hugely costly and very damaging to reputation in a highly regulated and safety conscious industry.

The ability to manage the business through change without loosing time and money and understanding how to work with regulation from government level can be a challenge, especially when business does not follow a straight line of growth. You not only learn the law in terms of energy and environment but you also cover downstream regulation to customer supplies and renewable energy areas which you may also be involved with if you work for a large multinational for example. Many people are not aware of just how much work goes into getting regulation right for company and government and how much potential there is to save the environment from unnecessary practices which put all at risk. This masters programme has been devised in order to give you the opportunity to tailor your learnings to your career aspirations. The second Semester of our masters programme is flexible allowing you to select courses which either combine different areas of finance or which allow you to specialise in one of the three following areas:

You needn’t have any prior knowledge of energy, commodities, shipping or finance, although you should be comfortable with quantitative methods (mathematics and statistics).

Objectives

You’ll emerge from this course fully equipped to operate effectively in this highly competitive international industry. You’ll gain a solid foundation in energy economics, markets and trading, and be able to formulate strategy for fossil fuels, electricity and renewables. Your studies will encompass energy transportation, especially seaborne and are rounded off with extensive study of finance and financial markets and essential transferrable skills in accounting and IT. You can complement your core modules with optional modules and, if you wish, an independent research project.

  • Develop your knowledge and understanding of generation from exhaustible and renewable sources, demand determinants, transportation, trading, pricing and risk.

We review all our courses regularly to keep them up-to-date on issues of both theory and practice.

To satisfy the requirements of the degree course students must complete:

  • eleven core courses (10-20 credits each) and five electives (10 credits each)

  • three electives (10 credits each) and an Applied Research Project (20 credits)

or

  • one elective (10 credits) and a Business Research Project (40 credits)

Assessment of modules on the MSc in Energy, Trade and Finance, in most cases, is by means of coursework and unseen examination. Coursework may consist of standard essays, individual and group presentations, group reports, classwork, unseen tests and problem sets. Please note that any group work may include an element of peer assessment.

The course starts with two compulsory induction weeks, focused mainly on:

The one-year MPhil programme in Energy Technologies is designed for graduates who want to help tackle these problems by developing practical engineering solutions, and who want to learn more about the fundamental science and the technologies involved in energy utilization, electricity generation, energy efficiency, and alternative energy.

Energy is a huge topic, of very significant current scientific, technological, environmental, political and financial interest. Course detail

The educational target of the MPhil in Energy Technologies is to communicate the breadth of energy technologies and the underpinning science. The objectives of the course are:

1. To teach the fundamental sciences behind technologies involved in energy utilization, electricity generation, energy efficiency, and alternative energy.

2. To develop graduates with an overall view of energy engineering, while offering specialization in a selected area through a research project.

3. To prepare students for potential future PhD research.

Learning Outcomes

Students will be expected to have developed fundamental knwoledge on primary and secondary energy sources, on energy transformation, and on energy utilisation technologies. They will also have developed proficiencies in project management, in research skills, in team work, and in advanced calculation methods concerning energy technologies.

Graduates from this MPhil will be excellent candidates for doctoral study (at Cambridge and elsewhere) and for employment in a wide variety of jobs (for example: in industrial Research and Development departments; in policy-making bodies; in the utilities industry; in the manufacturing sector; in energy equipment manufacturing).

Format

The course is centred around taught courses in core areas, covering basic revision and skills needed (such as Communication and Organisational Skills, Mathematical and Computational Skills, Review of Basic Energy Concepts, and Research Topics), various energy technologies (such as Clean Fossil Fuels, Solar, Biofuels, Wind etc), and energy efficiency and systems level approaches.

Elective courses may be chosen from a broad range, which includes topics such as Turbulence, Acoustics, Turbomachinery, Nuclear Power Engineering, Solar Panels, and Energy Efficiency in Buildings. Elective courses are delivered mainly by the Department of Engineering with input from the Department of Chemical Engineering and other departments in Cambridge.

Research projects are chosen from a list offered by members of staff and are linked to the principal areas of energy research in the respective departments.

Students can expect to receive reports at least termly on the Cambridge Graduate Supervision Reporting System. They will receive comments on items of coursework, and will have access to a University supervisor for their dissertation. All students will also have personal access to the Course Director and the other staff delivering the course.

Assessment

Students taking 12 elective modules will write a short thesis (up to 10,000 words). Students taking 10 elective modules will write a long thesis (up to 20,000 words). In both cases, 10% of the marks will be assigned through a pre-submission presentation, and 10% of the marks will be assigned through a post-submission presentation.

Students will take 5 core modules, and then either 5 elective modules (and a long thesis) or 7 elective modules (and a short thesis). All core modules are examined purely by coursework. Some of the elective modules are also examined wholly or partly by coursework.

Some of the elective modules are examined wholly or partly by written examination.

At the discretion of the Examiners, candidates may be required to take an additional oral examination on the work submitted during the course, and on the general field of knowledge within which it falls.

Continuing

Students wishing to apply for continuation to the PhD would normally be expected to attain an overall mark of 70%.
