Our MSc invites students from around the world and UK students wishing to expand their understanding of an overseas market to study the global workplace from a human resource perspective. Looking at employers from around the globe, you will use qualitative and quantitative methods to critically evaluate company data, including the analysis of statistical information such as recruitment and retention rates.

You will also measure the success of training, looking at how it benefits staff and what the real return on investment is. Meanwhile, your qualitative data focuses on employee and manager perceptions, employer brand and how a company becomes an employer of choice.

You will gain an understanding of the fundamental principles of HR Management including learning and development in the workplace, people resourcing, HRM performance management and employee relations - covering everything from unions and strikes to discipline and grievance. You will also examine modules with a global flavour.

The work to be undertaken at London Metropolitan University through the “One Campus One Community” project provides a unique opportunity to create a “living lab” where you’ll be taught through actual projects.

The involvement of the Estates Department will create opportunities for you to undertake work placements and further enhance employment skills.

As well as being delivered by experienced staff at London Met, you’ll also be taught by guest lecturers with knowledge and experience of corporate social responsibility.

Assessment will include a mixture of coursework, practical projects, presentations, and seen and unseen exams.

The dissertation is a 60 credit research project based on an area of your own interest.

After the course

CSR is an umbrella term that many companies use to describe a variety of activities and can permeate through many roles in an organisation. Potential careers can be in all aspects of an organisation and we would expect our graduates to become managers and future leaders in business with an interest in implementing CSR. Successful graduates could also be consulting or advising corporations on their CSR efforts.

Moving to one campus

Between 2016 and 2020 we're investing £125 million in the London Metropolitan University campus, moving all of our activity to our current Holloway campus in Islington, north London. This will mean the teaching location of some courses will change over time.

Whether you will be affected will depend on the duration of your course, when you start and your mode of study. The earliest moves affecting new students will be in September 2017. This may mean you begin your course at one location, but over the duration of the course you are relocated to one of our other campuses. Our intention is that no full-time student will change campus more than once during a course of typical duration.

For example, you will be able to attend many additional seminars on subjects such as: the impact of globalisation; equality, human rights and social justice; public policy; sustainability and corporate social responsibility as well as HRM and business law issues such as engagement, talent management, reward, work-life balance, work organisation and employment rights. In addition, a programme of guest speakers drawn from private industry, the public sector, not-for-profit, consultancy and authors of eminent works is incorporated into your course.

Assessment is both formative and summative. It is designed to appeal to – and test – students from wide range of traditions. Methods are varied and include assignments written in report and essay format, comparative analyses, case studies, a skills development portfolio, presentations and group work. There are also two exams. The exams take place only in the first semester and are required by the CIPD across all approved programmes. Exam briefing is given is giving to help prepare you for these assessments.

There will also be a dissertation which carries 60 credits. The dissertation requires you to conduct a piece of empirical research on a topic of your choice (and approved by your tutor). Most students choose to conduct their research on a key ‘people management’ issue within their own organisation.

Professional accreditation

Students gain Associate Membership of the CIPD and you can apply for professional upgrading with the Institute linked to your professional experience to achieve Chartered Membership or Fellowship following successful completion of your programme of study. Placements are not a formal requirement of the course. Teaching and learning

You will learn through a substantial amount of group work and discussions around the core content from the first term onwards. One of the benefits of this programme is the blend of diverse perspectives you will experience collaborating with peers from a broad skillset and age range.

When it comes to assessment, you will find a substantial amount of the assignments are practitioner focused rather than being purely essay and exam based. For example, you might be asked to write a pitch for a company, where we would expect you to write about the theoretical underpinning of what you are proposing and then present it to the client as a practitioner.

One of the benefits of this varied assessment style is that you learn to write from an academic and practitioner perspective and understand different client needs.

Modules

The MSc Organisational Psychology consists of eight taught modules, plus an applied research dissertation, which normally takes five months to complete and forms the final part of the programme.

There is a substantial amount of theoretical work in all of the modules, but you will have the opportunity to apply your learning through practical exercises, group role plays and case studies.

Full-time students complete all eight modules and the dissertation in one calendar year (from September to September). Part-time students complete the course over two years.

Dissertation
You will need to submit a dissertation as part of the programme. In the second term you will start with a research methods seminar where you will be given support to develop the necessary skills for undertaking independent research. You will choose a topic under the guidance of a project supervisor and conduct empirical research in your chosen area, which will involve gaining access, collecting and analysing data and submitting an 8-10,000-word dissertation. In the summer term, you will work full-time completing your final dissertation. Many students choose to conduct research within an organisation for their final dissertation so they can address a real-world problem. One of our current students is working with a large public health organisation to explore how employee engagement has changed since a major internal change programme; whilst another is investigating what impact shared parental leave has on men’s careers with a professional severance firm.

Career prospects

Our graduates go on to apply their learning in a range of professional settings across the public and private sector, including organisations such as Aviva, Accenture, the Ministry of Defence and the BBC.

Whilst completing her Masters at City, Lucy worked for Assessment and Development Consultants as a Centre Administrator supporting the manager in running assessment and development centres. Soon after completing her Masters, Lucy completed a Graduate Scheme at Saville Consulting, gaining experience in the three core business areas.

Now working as a consultant at Saville Consulting, Lucy works on a number of projects including partner recruitment, assessment centre design, selection and assessment, employee development and competency framework design. Assessment is both formative and summative. It is designed to appeal to - and test - students from a wide range of traditions. Methods are varied and include assignments written in report and essay format, comparative analyses, case studies, a skills development portfolio and learning log, presentations and group work. There are also two exams. The exams take place only in the first semester and are required by the CIPD across all approved programmes. Exam briefing is given to help prepare you for these internally set assessments. There is also a 7,500 word Management Research Report.

Joint Master's Degree
Students in the Clinical Psychology doctoral program may pursue a joint program and earn the MA in Organizational Behavior during their doctoral studies. Accreditation
The Organizational Behavior master’s program passed a review and assessment by a Blue Ribbon Committee in 2001, and in 2003, received accreditation by the Organization Development Institute (currently the International Society for Organization Development).

Membership in National Organization Development Association
CSPP is a member school of the Organization Development Education Association, a sub-group of the National Organization Development Network (ODN). With this membership, students in the program become members of ODN and receive all benefits provided by the association.

Joint Master's Degree
Students in the Clinical Psychology doctoral program may pursue a joint program and earn the MA in Organizational Behavior during their doctoral studies. This is particularly helpful for students who are interested in pursuing administrative positions or doing organizational work as part of their career.

The joint program requires 24 units of organizational course work and 6 units may be transferred from the primary program. The international trip is optional.

Examining work and wellbeing, and motivation and engagement, alongside current research on leadership and consumer psychology, our experienced staff and guest lecturers share up-to-the minute practitioner insight.

You will study of occupational, business and consumer psychology in an industry context. Areas of analysis include recruitment and selection, training and development, stress management, work and wellbeing, motivation, engagement and leadership, organisational change, coaching and performance management. The course also examines the psychology of branding and consumer behaviour.

The degree also offers the BPS test user qualification as part of the course. Former students have taken up roles ranging from freelance employment advisors to senior change management consultants, and we are proud of our post MSc careers advice, and the support we give for progression to our doctorate programme.

Rebecca Griffiths went on to deliver consultancy to large brands, and combine her people development and writing skills in a role as an employee engagement advisor. Change Management Consultant Ray Millican chose to study at London Met because the staff members were "approachable, realistic and very experienced in ‘real-world’ issues".

For those wishing to do the BPS Occupational Psychology chartership, post-MSc support is provided.

To become an occupational psychologist, a title protected by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC), you must have Chartered Membership with the British Psychological Society and be registered with the HCPC. For those wanting to achieve this, support and guidance is available through the University.

Moving to one campus

Between 2016 and 2020 we're investing £125 million in the London Metropolitan University campus, moving all of our activity to our current Holloway campus in Islington, north London. This will mean the teaching location of some courses will change over time.

Whether you will be affected will depend on the duration of your course, when you start and your mode of study. The earliest moves affecting new students will be in September 2017. This may mean you begin your course at one location, but over the duration of the course you are relocated to one of our other campuses. Our intention is that no full-time student will change campus more than once during a course of typical duration.

All students will benefit from our move to one campus, which will allow us to develop state-of-the-art facilities, flexible teaching areas and stunning social spaces.

The MSc Business and Organisational Psychology with Professional Experience, is an extended full-time Masters programme with a substantive professional experience component. Within the professional experience modules, students have the option of undertaking an internship with a host organisation or, alternatively, campus-based professional experience.

Internships are subject to a competitive application and selection process and the host organisation may include the University. Internships may be paid or unpaid, and this will depend on what is being offered and agreed with the host organisation. Students who do not wish to undertake an internship or are not successful in securing an internship will undertake campus-based professional experience, which will deliver similar learning outcomes through supervised projects and activities designed to offer students the opportunity to integrate theory with an understanding of professional practice.
