Our programme provides high-quality post-graduate teaching and research training in the analysis of emerging economies. It offers a distinctive approach to the study of development by focusing on rising economic powers with a particular focus on national development strategies, economic and political institutions, and the political processes that influence economic reforms. Based at King’s International Development Institute, it draws on social scientific expertise located across other departments in the Schools of Social Sciences & Public Policy and Arts & Humanities as well as King’s Global Institutes.

The programme critically assesses economic development theory to ask whether these countries offer a new model or models of development. Our main thrust is examining the strategies that emerging economies have adopted to promote development. This includes asking how sustainable or enduring these new strategies are, how emerging markets solve difficult problems of promoting growth over the longer term, including development and diffusion of technology, managing trade and financial flows, balancing the role of the state and the market, and dealing with problems of institutional underdevelopment and weak systems of law and accountability.

Our programme provides you with high-quality graduate research training for seeking employment in the large development sector in the UK, other OECD countries and in emerging economies, consultancy organisations, private sector companies with global operations and government offices. It is ideal if you are an international student seeking specialist training and/or government employment.

- Course format and assessment -

The programme consists of 180 credits: a 60-credit dissertation; 60 credits of taught core modules; and up to 60 credits of optional modules from a list taught by affiliated faculties and from complementary programmes. The majority of International Development Institute modules are assessed by a 4,000-word essay; other optional modules may differ. The dissertation module is assessed by a 10-12,000-word essay.

It will help them understand the particular challenges faced in developing corporate strategy, attracting foreign direct investment and working in countries with very different cultures, institutions, laws and business practices.

If emerging markets are, by their very nature, in a state of flux, then already successful economies are characterised by a different kind of dynamic. And as the pace of globalisation accelerates, the need to understand the drivers of national and international economic and business success becomes ever more acute. That gives graduates of this MSc some very real career advantages.

The programme will suit those with a background in or experience of the commercial or financial worlds. It is useful for students from emerging economies who wish to bring themselves up to speed with contemporary thinking in corporate strategy, including technology and financial management and business economics, and of public policies dealing with pressing issues relating to development in general. PREREQUISITE COURSES

Four prerequisite courses cover fields of study which provide you with the basic skills required to study subsequent courses:

Organisational Theory: Structure and Behaviour shows how various theories and models within the fields of organisational sociology and personality psychology may individually and in combination provide an expedient approach to creating an understanding of organisations as both structure and behaviour.

Emerging markets, their institutions and challenges. The course aims at providing an analytical framework for understanding emerging markets and their institutions. The importance and growth potentials of emerging markets, such as for example the Chinese, mean that they cannot be ignored, but their particularities at the same time pose serious liabilities of foreignness for Western firms. Overcoming these liabilities must start with an understanding of the institutional differences between the emerging markets and the economies of the West.

Management Research Method focuses on the production of qualified and justified knowledge which lives up to scientific quality criteria. This is a sine qua non issue for any candidate in business economics, who wishes to make decisions on an informed background. The course introduces a variety of research designs applicable when carrying out research in the area of organisation and management and related areas. Focus will first be on the philosophical issues pertaining to the creation of valid knowledge. In the second part focus will be on techniques for data collection and analysis. These techniques include qualitative as well as quantitative approaches.

SPECIALISATION COURSES

Organizational Change and Development concerns changes in organisations from a broad perspective. Analytically the course distinguishes between organisational, group and individual level. Changes are investigated with the use of classical as well as more recent theoretical models and practical tools. The course aims to give you a theoretical insight into the topic of change management. Moreover cases are used for practical application of different change models, through which strategic, structural and human issues are integrated. Central elements in the course are:

— Theoretical insight into management of change

— Analysing and diagnosing the need for changes in specific case organisations

— Choosing between types of interventions and strategies for implementation

— Human aspects of implementation (e.g. management, communication, motivation, training)”

Strategy and Business Development seeks to train your ability to apply central strategic tools for diagnostic purposes and subsequent business development in connection with the resolution of managerial aspects of development issues at a strategic level.

Leadership aims to provide insights into personal aspects of management, including issues such as shared, virtual, and team leadership.

Entrepreneurship enables you to understand the factors affecting the formation and growth of new enterprises. You must be able to analyse alternative organisational options and managerial challenges.

Human Resource Management and Development will give you a fundamental theoretical and practical insight into and understanding of the Human Resource Management (HRM) field – the dynamic interplay of person, job, and organisation. The course aims to train your ability to identify and understand different HRM issues and dilemmas within the field, and also in different forms of organisations. The course will also deal with International HRM.

In the third semester you can choose elective courses within your areas of interest. The courses can either be taken at Aarhus BSS during the semester, at the AU Summer University or at one of our more than 300 partner universities abroad. You can also participate in internship programmes either in Denmark or abroad.

The fourth semester is devoted to the final thesis. You may choose the topic of the thesis freely and so get a chance to concentrate on and specialise in a specific field of interest. The thesis may be written in collaboration with another student or it may be the result of your individual effort. When the thesis has been submitted, it is defended before the academic advisor as well as an external examiner.

This Master's programme is an applied, policy-oriented programme reflecting SSEES's leading-edge expertise in comparative economics. The programme is centred around the economics and economic policy of emerging markets, viewed through the prism of Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union, but relevant to the emerging economies and societies of South and South East Asia, the Middle East and North Africa as well as Latin America.

Degree information

The programme focuses on the development experiences of the 28 nations that have emerged from the former Soviet bloc in Europe and Asia. Students analyse the impact of institutional reforms on diverse outcomes, including economic performance, socio-economic development, financial integration, democratisation, innovation and entrepreneurship, and internationalisation.

Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits.

The programme consists of three core modules (60 credits), a choice of a further one of three core modules (15 credits), optional modules (45 credits), and a research dissertation (60 credits).

Teaching and learning

Banking services represents a highly competitive and rapidly changing sector in today’s global economy. The course offers students a unique opportunity to study advanced theory and practice relating to the international banking sector, and to develop an appreciation of the causes and significance of current developments in this vitally important and dynamic sector of the economy.

The course provides advanced level management and business training relating to practical issues in international banking, with particular reference to issues pertaining to developing countries and emerging markets. This involves understanding the practical managerial issues surrounding the running of banking/financial firms, such as bank financial and strategic management; bank and corporate performance; and the analysis of financial systems and markets. Also under consideration will be the interactions between economic development and the design, growth, operation and performance of the financial system in emerging markets.
Course Structure

The course is a full-time programme lasting 12 months. It consists of two parts:

Part 1:

Is a wholly taught component, contributing 120 credits. All taught modules carry a credit weighting of 15 credits. Part 1 is taught during the two semesters which make up the academic year. Teaching during semester 1 normally runs from late-September to December, with examinations in January. Teaching during Semester 2 normally runs from late-January to early-May, with examinations in May and June.

Part 2:

This consists of either a supervised Dissertation of around 10,000 words, or a structured Advanced Taught Programme of Summer Study that is specific to your chosen degree. Part 2 is completed during the summer months, from late-May to September. If you undertake a supervised Dissertation, you are expected to submit your Dissertation by September in the calendar year following your initial registration for your postgraduate degree. The assessments for the Advanced Taught Programme of Summer Study are also completed during September in the calendar year following your initial registration.

It is about creating self-sustaining institutions that liberate societies from low level deprivation traps by increasing productivity, freedom and cooperative interdependence. The MSc in Development Management gives you the theory and practical tools to drive such transformations forward by enabling you to understand why some societies have succeeded and others have failed.

The programme is built around a theory-led approach to the role of institutions and organisations in development, using both classical institutional theory and the new institutional economics. Programme Structure

The MSc degree in Marketing is an intensive full-time programme lasting 12 months. The programme is divided into two 11-week semesters of taught content, and the summer period, where you can choose between a research dissertation and the practice track. The dissertation allows you to focus on a specific aspect of marketing that is interesting to you, using theory and robust research methods to investigate and generate a much deeper understanding of this area of interest. The practice track allows you take what you have learned about marketing and use this knowledge within your team to come up with a solution for an organisation’s problem.

Summer period

During the summer period you will be able to choose between two tracks: (1) dissertation track and (2) practice track.

The dissertation track gives you the opportunity to do a piece of substantial work on your own, demonstrating originality, innovation, drive, and determination. The dissertation also enables you to plan and execute your own project, giving you complete choice and flexibility.

The practice track allows you to undertake a number of tasks, both working in teams with other members of your cohort and working individually. The practice track is designed to allow you to apply learned concepts and theories to practical problems and issues, including a management problem which will be presented to you by an organisation. This track also provides opportunities for gaining practical experience in running team projects.

Both tracks allow you to demonstrate critical insight and reflective thinking about business/management/policy issues. The tracks also help develop your written and presentation skills, and your ability to develop effective arguments. All of these attributes are transferable skills relevant to the workplace and your future career.

Teaching & Learning Methods

You will be exposed to a variety of teaching and learning methods that could include: interactive lectures, case studies, seminar presentations and group project work. As this is a Masters level course, we place a significant emphasis on independent, directed, private study that is often conducted in learning sets or groups.

Assessment

A variety of individual and group assessment methods are used throughout the degree including exams, coursework essays, reports and presentations.

Professional Qualifications

The programme carries exemptions from the Chartered Institute of Marketing exams and has links with the Market Research Society and the Institute of Direct Marketing (IDM). All students will be eligible to enter the IDM's National Student Marketing Competition at which Bath has an impressive record.

Offering two years of study (double that of most masters programmes) and a funded six-month placement at Fudan University’s prestigious International Cultural Exchange School, this programme draws on a wide range of expertise in Chinese studies.

Catering to students at both the beginner and intermediate language levels, this flexible programme is presented by experts in their respective areas, and places you within a vibrant environment in Edinburgh that actively engages with the Chinese community, both academically and socially.

You’ll develop advanced skills in Modern Standard Chinese (Mandarin) and explore aspects of contemporary Chinese society, culture, economy, politics and business.

Programme structure

This programme will provide you with more than 800 hours of language tuition. You will study in interactive multimedia language classes with teachers that include native speakers, in small groups of international students from a variety of disciplinary backgrounds.
