Our Political Economy of Emerging Markets MSc offers a distinctive approach to the study of development. We focus on the political economy of emerging markets, especially national development strategies and the underlying politics and institutions. The course also covers subjects such as development theory, political economy, geography and management, and is flexible enough to allow you to focus on particular countries and regions.
Our course provides you with high-quality post-graduate teaching and training in the analysis of emerging economies. It offers a distinctive approach to the study of development by focusing on rising economic powers with a particular focus on national development strategies, economic and political institutions, and the political processes that influence economic reforms. We are based at King’s Department of International Development, which enables us to draw on social scientific expertise from across other departments in the faculties of Social Sciences & Public Policy and Arts & Humanities as well as King’s Global Institutes.
The course critically assesses economic development theory to ask whether emerging economies offer a new model or models of development. Our main focus is examining the strategies that emerging economies have adopted to promote development. This includes asking how sustainable or enduring these new strategies are and how emerging markets solve the difficult problems of promoting growth over the longer term. To answer this last question, we investigate how emerging economies deal with the development and diffusion of technology, manage trade and financial flows, balance the role of the state and the market, and tackle problems of institutional underdevelopment and weak systems of law and accountability
Our course provides you with high-quality graduate research training for seeking employment in the large development sector in the UK, other OECD countries and in emerging economies, consultancy organisations, private sector companies with global operations and government offices. It is ideal if you are an international student seeking specialist training and/or government employment.
For every 20-credit module, we will typically provide 20 hours of lectures and seminars, and we will expect you to undertake 180 hours of independent study. For your dissertation, we will usually provide five hours of dissertation workshops, and six one-to-one or group meetings with supervisors. You will undertake 589 hours of independent study.
In each year 60 credits in taught modules should be taken (of which in year one at 20 credits should be a required module), and in Year 2 the dissertation (60 credits) is also taken. Typically, one credit equates to 10 hours of work.
We assess the majority of our modules through a 4,000-word essay, although other optional modules may differ. We will assess your dissertation through a proposal and a 12,000-word piece of writing.

1st semester: prerequisite courses
The first semester offers three courses, which provides the student an advanced insight into the theories and topics that are crucial for the understanding, definition and solution of International Business related problems.
The course Emergence of the Global Enterprise gives students a profound understanding of the different theoretical perspectives on the internationalization of firms in order to understand the drivers and decision-making related to the emergence of global enterprises, the operation of the global enterprise, and global business models.
Another course is Emerging markets, their institutions and challenges. The course aims at providing an analytical framework for understanding emerging markets and their institutions. The importance and growth potentials of emerging markets, such as for example the Chinese.
Alongside with the courses above the student will be introduced to methodology in the course Management Research Method. The course focuses on the production of qualified and justified knowledge which lives up to scientific quality criteria. The course introduces a variety of research designs applicable when carrying out research in the area of organisation and management and related areas. These techniques include qualitative as well as quantitative approaches.
2nd semester: specialisation courses

The course Organizing and Managing the Multinational Corporation provides students with an understanding of how multinational corporations are organized and managed, and how the MNC can develop different management practices and organizational capabilities dependent on specific contingencies and circumstances.
In the course Intercultural Competences the student will achieve understanding of how to deal with cultural differences, the role of culture as frameworks for individual and collective actions, and the interplay between cultural structures and individual behavior and train the ability to identify challenges faced by international managers, synthesize the insights gained from the various theoretical fields, and challenge and critically evaluate both functionalist and constructivist, theories and concepts of culture and management.
The course Human Resource Management and Development gives students a fundamental theoretical and practical insight into and understanding of the Human Resource Management (HRM) field – the dynamic interplay of person, job, and organisation.
Finally the course B2B Purchasing Management will teach students how to develop and manage the global purchasing function of an organization. This includes understanding how social buyer-supplier relationships are established, developed, and managed.
3rd semester: Electives or study abroad
On this semester the student has a great possibility to define a professional path for the future based on the choice of electives. 4th semester: Final thesis
The fourth semester is devoted to the Master thesis. The student may freely choose the topic of the thesis and thereby get a chance to concentrate on and specialise in a specific field of interest. The thesis may be written in collaboration with another student or it may be the result of individual effort. When the thesis has been submitted, it is defended before the academic advisor as well as an external examiner.
The MSc in Strategy, Organisation and Leadership focuses on processes, which give students relevant knowledge, insight, and behavioural skills. Real-life processes are often international in scope which is reflected in the content of the different courses in the programmme.

1st semester: Prerequisite courses
The first semester consists of 3 courses, providing the student with both methodological and practical skills.
The students will be introduced to various theories and models within the fields of organisational sociology and personality psychology in the course Organisational Theory: Structure and Behaviour. The expedient approach to creating an understanding of organisations as both structure and behaviour, will be further discussed based on the theories and models.
The course in Emerging markets, their institutions and challenges focuses on the importance and growth potentials of emerging markets, such as for example the Chinese, mean that they cannot be ignored, but their particularities at the same time pose serious liabilities of foreignness for Western firms. For students to overcome these liabilities. The students must start with an understanding of the institutional differences between the emerging markets and the economies of the West.
The third course in the first semester is Management Research Method. Emphasis will be put on the production of qualified and justified knowledge which lives up to scientific quality criteria. The student will be introduced to a variety of research designs applicable when carrying out research in the area of organisation and management and related areas.
2nd semester: Specialisation courses
The second semester provides the students with 4 specialisation courses.
The students will approach organizational change and leadership from a broad perspective, and traditional planned change models in a course: Organizational Change and Leadership. The course will also include clarification of perspectives on leadership, especially on the relationship between the concepts of management and leadership, and the central topics are the discussions of task-oriented and people-oriented leadership behaviour in various contexts at various levels.
The ability to apply central strategic tools for diagnostic purposes and subsequent business development will be trained in Strategy and Business Development. This will be done in connection with the resolution of managerial aspects of development issues at a strategic level.
Entrepreneurship course enables the students to understand the factors affecting the formation and growth of enterprises. They will learn to analyse alternative organisational options and managerial challanges.
Lastly, the students will participate in a Human Resource Management and Development course, which will provide them with the fundamental theoretical and practical insights into understanding the Human Resource Management field. Topics such HRM issues, international HRM, and dilemmas within the field will be discussed.
3rd semester: Electives or study abroad
In the third semester you can choose elective courses within your areas of interest. The courses can either be taken at Aarhus BSS during the semester, at the AU Summer University or at one of our more than 300 partner universities abroad. You can also participate in internship programmes either in Denmark or abroad.
4th semester: Final thesis

This Master's programme is an applied, policy-oriented programme reflecting SSEES's leading-edge expertise in comparative economics. The programme is centred around the economics and economic policy of emerging markets, viewed through the prism of Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union, but relevant to the emerging economies and societies of South and South-East Asia, the Middle East and North Africa as well as Latin America.
The programme focuses on the development experiences of the 28 nations that have emerged from the former Soviet bloc in Europe and Asia. Students analyse the impact of institutional reforms on diverse outcomes, including economic performance, socio-economic development, financial integration, democratisation, innovation and entrepreneurship, and internationalisation.

Banking services represents a highly competitive and rapidly changing sector in today’s global economy. The course offers students a unique opportunity to study advanced theory and practice relating to the international banking sector, and to develop an appreciation of the causes and significance of current developments in this vitally important and dynamic sector of the economy.
The course provides advanced level management and business training relating to practical issues in international banking, with particular reference to issues pertaining to developing countries and emerging markets. This involves understanding the practical managerial issues surrounding the running of banking/financial firms, such as bank financial and strategic management; bank and corporate performance; and the analysis of financial systems and markets. Also under consideration will be the interactions between economic development and the design, growth, operation and performance of the financial system in emerging markets.
The course is a full-time programme lasting 12 months. It consists of two parts:

Introductory modules explore the concepts of enterprise and entrepreneurship and their role in society. You’ll examine how enterprise is seen around the world, and how different geographical and economic contexts create challenges for new ventures.
You’ll consider contemporary issues and debates during guest lectures with successful entrepreneurs, hearing first-hand about their experience of the latest topics. You’ll also develop your understanding of research methods in business and enterprise studies.
The course has a practical focus and you will work on a range of projects that allow you to gain real experience – you’ll create a new venture and work in a team to deliver a consultancy project for an entrepreneurial business.
In the final semester, you’ll complete a dissertation project on a research question of your choice - this can be used to explore your own ideas for a business venture or social enterprise, or look at how best to support or grow an existing firm.
You’ll also have a choice of optional modules in key areas of management and international business, including cross-cultural management, supply chain management and the emerging markets.
If you study part-time, you’ll study one day per week over 24 months and take only the compulsory modules, plus a dedicated module in applied enterprise. The part-time option enables existing entrepreneurs to continue to develop their own enterprise, whilst professionals and budding entrepreneurs can work alongside their studies.

The MSc Construction in Emerging Economies is highly innovative in its design and specifically focused on the needs of countries undergoing rapid urbanisation. Many such countries contain urban conurbations with a GDP in excess of some developed countries, but at the same time they also possess vast rural areas which remain poor and underdeveloped. The construction sector in such economies is invariably at the nexus of sustainable development.
The distinctive focus is on countries undergoing rapid urbanisation, placing construction-related knowledge within the economic, social and developmental contexts in emerging economies.
The course is aimed at early-to-mid-career professionals with an interest in the role of construction in emerging economies. The course will appeal to those seeking to bring about practical changes in a range of different national contexts. It will also appeal to those working with international NGOs who require a better understanding of construction in a developmental context.
The course content reflects the unique expertise available at the University of Reading, including our extensive international experience. The dissertation is a major individual research project. Guidance will be given on choosing a research topic, research techniques and the style and presentation of the finished document. Classes in research skills are provided as part of the dissertation module. Students will have their own carefully selected dissertation tutor whose role is to help them plan and successfully execute this key part of the programme.
We offer a one-year, full-time modular course. It is taught with ten, one-week attendance periods at the University. The full-time programme starts in September each year.

Future career paths are likely to be within central governmental agencies, local/regional government, NGOs or the private sector. In the private sector, some graduates will work for major international construction companies who are seeking to develop their international market in emerging economies. The MSc in Environmental Technology provides the highest standard of knowledge and skills development for environmental specialists. Through the course students acquire a diverse range of discipline-specific problem-solving frameworks for tackling contemporary environmental issues. A major emphasis of the course is on the way that environments function and on the compatible tools, alternative technologies and policies for sustainable environmental management. The course provides students with different options to build on their undergraduate degree, by allowing them to specialise in an area of particular interest, convert undergraduate knowledge to a different setting, differentiate for the job market and learn specific techniques and tools for research and management.

Contemporary “business-as-usual” solutions are not sufficient for achieving meaningful change in a resource-constrained and inequitable world. Students taking the Business and the Environment Option (B&E) will develop a critical understanding of how businesses currently tackle the challenges of sustainability in the broadest of senses. They will use creative thinking to develop proactive businesses models that go beyond contemporary levels of sustainability performance.
The B&E Option provides students with an understanding of opportunities and risks that businesses face in the light of growing environmental and sustainability constraints and social inequality. It gives them the critical thinking skills required to develop entrepreneurial solutions that maximise those opportunities. Students will be equipped with the knowledge and skills to deal with the complex choices that business must face in order to function as responsible members of society.
The Option benefits from the input of leading companies and strategists in the fields of sustainability, environment, finance, retail and emerging markets, and students are exposed to a wide variety of industry and academic perspectives. There is a strong emphasis on problem-solving , taking a learning-by-doing approach and going beyond the norm to develop solutions to difficult problems using systemic, innovative thinking coupled with sound business and organisational management strategies.
Teaching is supported with case study sessions, which give students the skills and confidence to rigorously analysis sustainable business problems. Extensive practical work serves to both reinforce learning and to give students exposure to real-world problems. A group-based consultancy project is carried out in conjunction with leading UK-based companies, whilst a business modelling exercise gives students the opportunity to develop their own ideas of what a responsible company should look like by creating robust business ideas that have positive environmental and social impacts.
