This Masters course in Emergency Planning Resilience and Response will provide you with an opportunity for you to develop master’s level education in the concepts theories and academic skills for emergency planning, resilience, business continuity and disaster management and recovery .The course caters for professionals who may already be working in this field or those wishing to embark on a career in emergency planning. The course aims to offer a flexible approach to the subjects studied and those already working in this area will be able to develop further their knowledge skills and experience. The course will ensure you develop a sound working knowledge of the principles and practice of emergency planning and the underpinning policy. You will develop valuable skills in communication and strategic leadership. You will also develop a wide range of inter-personal skills for effective use in multi-agency teams. There will be opportunities to take part in exercises and training in simulated emergency settings with a wide range of professional and other Key Stakeholders and organisations involved in emergency planning.

You will study six 20 credit modules and conduct a 60 credit Master’s level piece of independent research. You may also use the accreditation of prior experience and learning process to credit appropriate experience or past level 7 credits for learning, towards the course. You will be able to study a range of subjects for the 60 credits at PG Certificate (Cert) level and 60 credits at PG Diploma (Dip) level. The 60 credit independent study module can be selected from three options, either an evidence based practice module containing two major assessments, usually of relevance to your current workplace (under the supervision of an experienced member of staff), a Consultancy Project which will be negotiated by an employer or third party organisation where you may agree delivery parameters of a consultancy project , carry out the required work and academically evaluate the process and outcomes or the research dissertation. This module consists of an independent study designed, planned & carried out by yourself (under the supervision of an experienced member of staff), written up into dissertation of a minimum of 15,000 words.

You may study the course as a whole and decide on your final award title of MSc Emergency Planning. It is envisaged that this award will have two intermediate awards :

The role of pharmacists in the emergency department offers an exciting opportunity to work in a new field of practice. Pharmacists are also extending their scope of practice in urgent and acute medicine areas in primary and secondary care.

Our six-month Advanced Clinical Skills short course enables trainee pharmacy practitioners to independently evaluate, assess and recommend or prescribe medicines for patients who present to emergency departments.

This will allow junior and senior medical staff to attend to more urgent medical patients in a clinical setting and aims to decrease waiting times for patients with minor injuries. Research has shown that hospital pharmacists with additional skills in independent prescribing and advanced clinical assessment could manage up to 35.7% of patients presenting to emergency departments.

Upon successful completion of the course, you will be able to manage emergency and urgent patients in addition to working as part of a multidisciplinary emergency, acute medicine and urgent care team.

Our course confers 30 postgraduate (Level 7) credits upon completion and can be taken as a standalone course by pharmacists who are already non-medical prescribers. If you are not already a non-medical prescriber, you can take this course before starting our Independent Prescribing short course . Completing both of these courses within two years of registering will lead to a PGCert in Advanced Specialist Training in Emergency Medicine .

Aims

This course aims to:

  • provide you with the skills to independently evaluate and assess patients who present to the emergency department, acute medicine or urgent care setting;
  • enable you to independently recommend and/or prescribe appropriate medicines for patients who present to the emergency department, acute medicine or urgent care setting;
  • enhance your knowledge and skills in the evaluation and application of knowledge of best evidence-based practice to implement appropriate assessment and care for the emergency, acute medicine or urgent care patient.

This course was launched in response to a national pilot that identified clear demand for pharmacists with specific skills in emergency medicine.

Teaching and learning

You will learn using a blended approach that includes face-to-face sessions and online learning through our Blackboard platform.

This will allow you to continue to work in the NHS and study at a time that is convenient for you.

There will be on-campus study days to allow for face-to-face contact, teaching in groups, interaction with the other students, and practical skills demonstrations. You will also undergo supported learning in the emergency department where you are based.

You will acquire the understanding and skills required to undertake and order a range of common practical assessment skills and diagnostic tests used in the emergency department, acute medicine and urgent care setting.

Your skills in interpreting results of commonly used diagnostic tests in the emergency department, acute medicine and urgent care setting will also be developed.

The unit introduces pharmacists to the underpinning knowledge and understanding of the assessment and the management of patients who are requiring urgent care and who are at risk of becoming acutely unwell.

Working in the clinical environment (emergency department, acute medicine or urgent care setting), this unit will build on existing knowledge of the use of a structured and systematic approach in the assessment of the urgent care patient, identifying the need for physiological and holistic care.

Practitioners can develop competencies in a specific patient group and provide patient-centred care for cohorts of patients in emergency or urgent care whom they are likely to manage within their scope of practice.

The course is a mixture of taught units and a research project, covering:

Programme Assessment

You will be part of a large postgraduate community in a vibrant and friendly department. The course units are delivered as a series of three-day teaching blocks, at three to four-week intervals from October to May, with all assessment by coursework assignments. The MSc and Diploma

1. Provide critical insights into competing perspectives on how Humanitarianism and Conflict Responses can be understood, analysed and explained - from both an historiographic and contemporary viewpoint.

Learning and teaching methods

Each year begins with a two week residential summer school in either the UK or in Finland. Summer School includes a week of simulation exercises in the field followed by a week of classes to introduce the forthcoming modules.

The remainder of the year involves studying online learning materials, engagement in online discussions and exercises, and self-directed study.

The final year includes a 12 week placement in either disaster response, humanitarian assistance of disaster risk reduction.

You will be taught by an international teaching faculty from a range of backgrounds with field expertise in disaster and emergency response, public health, and humanitarian assistance.

Work Experience and Employment Prospects

Graduates find work with national healthcare providers, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and inter-government organisations.

Some of our graduates have taken up key posts with the International Federation of Red Cross (IFRC) and Red Crescent Societies, the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office, the Department of Health, the armed forces and with NGOs in Sudan, Iraq, Angola and Afghanistan.

Module Details

You will study four key topics which will collaboratively develop your knowledge and ability to carry out forensic IT investigations as well as an introduction on how to build protected specification software for data and other web applications. You will also get to build your own test system as part of your final project.

Here are the units you will study:

Computer Forensic Investigation and Cryptography: This unit covers the practical aspects of conducting a forensic investigation of digital evidence. In order for the students to develop a critical understanding of computer forensics, a holistic approach of the forensics investigation process is adopted, with a full investigation ‘life cycle’ from seizure of evidence through to giving evidence in court as an expert witness. We look at a range of tools, operating systems and devices.

Computer Security: The unit provides an introduction to computer security concepts and their practical application, in both closed and interconnected networks. Students are expected to both understand and be able to critically evaluate different approaches to securing complex computer systems.

Cybercrime Security and Risk Management: This unit provides opportunities for participants to develop skills and knowledge in the understanding of corporate cyber threats. Drawing upon a range of practical examples, students will examine how rapid technological development and expansion in access to the internet has impacted upon crime (e.g. how anonymity and unfounded trust encourage deception), mapping out the terrain of information technology, and identifying the emerging areas of cyber crime. Areas explored will include the crossing of established boundaries into spaces over which control has already been established such as cyber-intrusion and cyber-theft, but also 'new cyber crimes' in the form of virtual trespass, Denial of Service attacks, and the development of opportunities for offending in the context of social networking websites.

Master's Project: You will undertake either an engineering unit or a study project, during the summer period. The project offers students the opportunity to apply the taught material in the solution of a real-world problem directly related to their course. The engineering project usually involves building a piece of software to solve a problem. An example of the sort of thing you might do would be building a tool to address a specific forensics requirement. The study project usually involves undertaking a study of an IT domain relevant to forensics. To prepare for this the project includes a number of preparatory sessions, which contribute to part of your final mark.

Specialist optional units include:

Systems, Security and Data Analysis: The first part of the unit provides an overview of computer organisation, operating systems and network design, with a strong focus on security considerations and aspects relevant to computer and digital forensics. The early part of the unit will provide an introduction to relevant issues in system architecture and file system organisation. Threats to computer systems will be considered. The first half of the unit is concluded with studying in some depth current technologies for securing real computer networks. The second part of the unit deals with the important topic of data analytics.

Advanced Programming Skills for the Web: This unit draws together a number of system development skills, focusing on how they can be applied to the development specifically of web applications. Topics covered include web programming, connecting databases to web applications, software tools, testing and security.

Programme Assessment

You will be taught through a combination of practical exercises, simulations, lectures, guest lectures and formative assessments, and will be expected to use a wide range of on and offline learning tools.

You will encounter a range of assessment styles depending on the content and nature of the unit topic. This can include written assignments, presentations as well as group and individual lab-based assessments. However, the most significant assessment element is the final dissertation, which reports and reflects on your final project.

Student Destinations

On completing this course, you will be equipped to seek employment in the following areas: IT auditing, information security, independent investigation, Computer Emergency Response Teams (CERT) and law enforcement agencies. The complex nature of terrorism and counter terrorism demands a multi-dimensional and multi-disciplinary analysis. Course format and assessment

Teaching

For lectures, seminars and feedback, you will typically have two hours per week over two 10-week terms per 40-credit module. This can be split into one lecture + one seminar or other combinations thereof. You will also have 360 hours of self-study. Typically, one credit equates to 10 hours of work. 

For the dissertation module, you will have 12 hours of training workshops and supervision to complement the 588 hours of self-study.

Assessment

  • Most modules will be assessed through a combination of essays, presentation, oral vivas and/or exams.
  • The dissertation module assessment will be based on a 100% dissertation assignment (up to 15,000 words).

About this degree

Students will learn about a wide variety of natural hazards, how to prepare and plan for emergencies and disasters and how to respond. Students will also learn practical aspects of designing, building and operating satellites and spacecraft including the challenges and risks posed by the environment of outer space.

Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits.

The programme consists of six core modules (90 credits), two optional modules (30 credits) and a dissertation (60 credits).
