The role of pharmacists in the emergency department offers an exciting opportunity to work in a new field of practice. Pharmacists are also extending their scope of practice in urgent and acute medicine areas in primary and secondary care.
Our six-month Advanced Clinical Skills short course enables trainee pharmacy practitioners to independently evaluate, assess and recommend or prescribe medicines for patients who present to emergency departments.
This will allow junior and senior medical staff to attend to more urgent medical patients in a clinical setting and aims to decrease waiting times for patients with minor injuries. Research has shown that hospital pharmacists with additional skills in independent prescribing and advanced clinical assessment could manage up to 35.7% of patients presenting to emergency departments.
Upon successful completion of the course, you will be able to manage emergency and urgent patients in addition to working as part of a multidisciplinary emergency, acute medicine and urgent care team.
Our course confers 30 postgraduate (Level 7) credits upon completion and can be taken as a standalone course by pharmacists who are already non-medical prescribers. If you are not already a non-medical prescriber, you can take this course before starting our Independent Prescribing short course . Completing both of these courses within two years of registering will lead to a PGCert in Advanced Specialist Training in Emergency Medicine .

You will learn using a blended approach that includes face-to-face sessions and online learning through our Blackboard platform.
This will allow you to continue to work in the NHS and study at a time that is convenient for you.
There will be on-campus study days to allow for face-to-face contact, teaching in groups, interaction with the other students, and practical skills demonstrations. You will also undergo supported learning in the emergency department where you are based.

This unit aims to develop enhanced knowledge and skills in the evaluation and application of knowledge of best evidence-based practice to implement appropriate assessment and care for the emergency, acute medicine and urgent care patient.
You will acquire the understanding and skills required to undertake and order a range of common practical assessment skills and diagnostic tests used in the emergency department, acute medicine and urgent care setting.
Your skills in interpreting results of commonly used diagnostic tests in the emergency department, acute medicine and urgent care setting will also be developed.

The unit introduces pharmacists to the underpinning knowledge and understanding of the assessment and the management of patients who are requiring urgent care and who are at risk of becoming acutely unwell.
Working in the clinical environment (emergency department, acute medicine or urgent care setting), this unit will build on existing knowledge of the use of a structured and systematic approach in the assessment of the urgent care patient, identifying the need for physiological and holistic care.
Practitioners can develop competencies in a specific patient group and provide patient-centred care for cohorts of patients in emergency or urgent care whom they are likely to manage within their scope of practice.
You will use a state-of-the-art SimMan to practice clinical skills during your face-to-face study days at the University.

Our course will contribute to your annual continuing professional development (CPD) programme as part of the requirements for registration with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC).
Our course offers career progression for experienced pharmacists to manage patients in the emergency department or acute medicine setting in addition to working as a member of the multidisciplinary emergency, acute medicine or urgent care team.
This multidisciplinary degree course focuses on response to crises originating from both conflict-zones and natural disasters. Bringing together the study of medicine and humanities, the course provides an inclusive approach that mirrors the reality of aid operations and informs the reflexive processes of both analytical and applied disciplines. Students will be able to draw synergies from an exceptionally wide breadth of disciplinary traditions and research expertise.
1. Provide critical insights into competing perspectives on how Humanitarianism and Conflict Responses can be understood, analysed and explained - from both an historiographic and contemporary viewpoint.
2. Develop analytical skills in critically evaluating the idea of humanitarianism and the ways that responses to conflict are organised, justified and implemented. This includes competency in developing a reasoned argument, critically considering data sources and defending different approaches.
3. Develop skills in gathering, organising and using evidence and information from a wide variety of sources. This will be complemented by guidance on how best to manage workloads and obtain research materials.
4. Enable students to apply research skills to a relevant research area.
Intended learning outcomes of the programme
Students should be able to show a critical understanding of :
1. Key issues and debates in Humanitarianism and Conflict Response, familiarity with different theoretical approaches, practical problems and an appreciation of the diversity of policies at international and national levels.
2. Both the range of social science topics associated with Humanitarianism and Conflict Response and the normative and historiographic assumptions which underpin these issues.
3. The analytical and policy literature concerning the related issues of the causes of conflict, reconstruction, ethics and international governance structures and institutions, the role and perspectives of the state, multilateral and bilateral agencies, international and domestic NGOs and other civil institutions.
4. A detailed and extensive understanding of a specific conceptual and/or policy-related area of Humanitarianism and Conflict Response, of the implications and limitations of research findings on this subject; and of how to produce an original piece of academic research, all through their dissertation.

A close link has been formed with the humanitarian organisation Médecins Sans Frontières. Recipient of the 1999 Nobel Prize, it delivers emergency aid in over 60 countries to people affected by armed conflict, epidemics, natural or man-made disasters or exclusion from healthcare through its staff of 25,000 health professionals, logistics experts and administrators. The HCRI is also building a network of associate fellows based in relevant organisations and academic institutions around the world.
Our Terrorism, Security & Society MA is an interdisciplinary course that draws on history, political science, international relations, sociology, social psychology and risk studies to understand international security threats. Because of the complex nature of terrorism, we believe it is valuable to study it from a variety of perspectives. On this course, you will focus on security and counterterrorism issues and on a critical social science approach, and analyse society’s response and adaptation to the phenomenon.
The complex nature of terrorism and counter terrorism demands a multi-dimensional and multi-disciplinary analysis. Our course provides an overview of the related theories and paradigms and will prepare you to undertake further research or to enter careers that require an understanding of these issues.
We will provide you with a comprehensive understanding of one of the most contested concepts in contemporary discourse – terrorism – and its relationship with relevant and related issues in the field of security studies.
For lectures, seminars and feedback, you will typically have two hours per week over two 10-week terms per 40-credit module. This can be split into one lecture + one seminar or other combinations thereof. You will also have 360 hours of self-study. Typically, one credit equates to 10 hours of work.
For the dissertation module, you will have 12 hours of training workshops and supervision to complement the 588 hours of self-study.

Uniting emergency response, disaster risk reduction and space technology this programme is designed to prepare students to work in the fields of satellite technology and disaster response to explore the management of risk and disaster losses from a range of perspectives, focusing on emerging risks posed to modern technology by space weather and the monitoring of hazards on Earth from outer space.
Students will learn about a wide variety of natural hazards, how to prepare and plan for emergencies and disasters and how to respond. Students will also learn practical aspects of designing, building and operating satellites and spacecraft including the challenges and risks posed by the environment of outer space.

This programme aims to prepare students for careers in space research, space and defence industries as well as most industries with risk management requirements.
The unique selling point of the programme is the direct access to key government and business drivers in the field of space weather, with invited seminars and reserch projects supported by the UK Met Office, EDF, Atkins and other institutions interested in the hazards of space.
The natural hazard of space weather is a "new" hazard which has only recently been identified as a significant risk to human society. As the first generation of researchers, practitioners and engineers in this field, students will be at the forefront of major new issues in an expanding sector of the economy. As disaster response comes to rely on more advanced technology aid, relief and disaster response agencies require experts trained in the technological infrastructure to innovate, explain, operate and understand the limitations of these novel systems and the help they can provide before, during and after disasters.
The programme will also provide students will advanced training in many transferable skills, such as computor programming, technical writing, oral and written presentation, the use of engineering design tools and graphic visualisation software.
