The purpose of this module is to develop the academic and clinical requirements for the nurse or other allied health professional working in either an Emergency Department, Minor Injury Unit or other pre-hospital environment. The pathway will enable students to develop graduate, lifelong learning skills such as critical thinking, problem solving and the use of evidence based practice to enhance current professional and academic skills; this in turn will develop transferable skills which will enhance their employability.

The pathway has been designed and based on the Royal College of Emergency Care competency document.

During this course students will develop a deep understanding of the diversity of health and physical and mental well-being. They will develop an understanding of a wide range of issues such as those of particular relevance to a rural environment and the application and effectiveness of new technologies in a healthcare environment. The course is led by experienced Nurse practioners and will focus on upskilling students in the following areas:

Limb injuries
Wounds including minor burns
Head and facial injuries including eye, ear, nose injuries including foreign bodies
Neck & back injuries
Rib injuries
Insect, animal and human bites

The module runs over 2 semesters with 14 taught days (1 day a week).

Workplace support

The student must have the support of their Manager and be permitted to practice under supervision in an appropriate area as an Emergency Practitioner. Therefore you must have the agreement of a suitable mentor (e.g. an experienced EP or doctor) before applying.

The module will use a variety of assessments such as written examination, OSCEs, competencies and an applied assignment.

This clinical placement takes place during the first year of the course and occurs in the students own area of employment under supervision of an experienced senior clinician.

Admission Requirements

Academic:
Hold an honors degree in Nursing Studies or equivalent; and
a post-basic qualification in relevant nursing specialty or
otherwise satisfy the course committee that they have the ability to complete and benefit from the course.

Professional:
Active Registration with NMBI: Applicants must be registered in the General Nursing Division of the active register maintained by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland.
Have a minimum of five years clinical experience in relevant nursing specialty during the last 8 years and
written commitment from host organisation to support the student for the clinical practicum (to include prescribing of medicinal products and ionising radiation)

This single level 7 practice module will provide you with an in-depth knowledge and understanding of providing care to a child in an emergency environment. Theoretical sessions combining lectures, seminars and practical sessions will enable development of skills in critical exploration of key theories and themes.

P44020 Adult Emergency Care (20 credits)
This level 7 single practice module will provide you with a systems based approach of in-depth knowledge and skills in the assessment of adult patients within the emergency environment. You will be expected to use your skills to critically examine key concepts and theories underpinning emergency care.

P44021 Governance in Emergency Care
This level 7 practice related module will allow in-depth exploration of current developments in the health service that guide and shape the provision of emergency care provided in England. This module covers current innovations and trends that guide our practice.

Teaching and learning

Teaching, learning and assessment strategy reflects the programme's student-centred, patient-centred and practice-focused approach. Each module strikes a good balance between structured learning activities and private study. You will have opportunities to share your existing and developing skills, knowledge and experience. A variety of teaching and learning strategies will be employed to make the most of the range of experience, skills and knowledge within the group.

You will be assessed in each of the modules. There are three parts to the Adult Acute Care module: a critical analysis relating to an aspect of care in an acutely ill patient, clinical competencies to stage five (expert) and an Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) which takes place in the skills laboratory.

Your Emergency Care module assessment is through four short OSCE scenarios which explore and analyse the assessment and management of service users across a spectrum of clinical presentations, and through a Viva Voce of one of the OSCE scenarios plus a supporting written assignment. Your practice is assessed by a practice supervisor and through the achievement of clinical competencies at expert level.

The core unit, Principles of Emergency, Acute and Critical Care, takes a systems based approach and deals with contemporary practice related issues, including patient safety, quality of care and end-of-life care considerations.

The optional unit allows you to develop specialist knowledge, in either adult trauma care, burn care, pain management or leadership. Alternatively, you can complete the PgCert by undertaking the NMC approved course, Nurse and Midwife Independent and Supplementary Prescribing (V300) in order to extend the scope of your practice.

Assessment

The course assessment strategy is closely aligned to the teaching and learning strategy which is designed to have: immediate professional relevance; draw on expertise-by-experience; foster active learning and be leaner-centred in approach. A distinct feature of the course is the range of assessment tasks, including those that allow you to undertake workplace relevant assessments that can have an immediate impact in practice.

The core unit, Principles of Emergency, Acute and Critical Care has three summative assessment points. The first is a 1000 word annotated bibliography critique from 5 articles/research papers related to the management of emergency, acute or critical, which accounts for 10% of your overall unit grade. The second is an unseen examination using short answer question to assess the taught element of the unit. This accounts for 30% of your overall unit grade. The third assessment is a case study, where you are required to reflect upon and challenge the care provided in light of current evidence and to inform future practice. This accounts for 60% of your overall unit grade.

Your choice of optional unit will determine the assessment tasks you undertake. These include unseen written examinations, case studies and portfolios of practice.

Assessment is supported in a range of ways including: comprehensive assessment briefs; use of formative assessment techniques (which are embedded within summative assessment tasks); through use of exemplar answers (including those previously submitted by students where possible); through rehearsing approaches to assessment tasks during contact sessions; through scheduled tutorials which focus on academic literacies including literature search, critique and referencing skills. You will receive feedback on submitted work within 15 working days and can discuss their work in scheduled tutorials and/or office time. Our Emergency Medicine programme offers professional development and an academic qualification for nurses and physicians in emergency contexts. Three distinct study routes are available and all have been designed entirely by physicians and nurses experienced in emergency care. The course is made up of two phases. Phase One provides a range of core and elective units from which students can select their personalised route. Phase Two consists of a substantial practitioner project in a chosen field of emergency medicine.

Who is it for?

MSC in Advance Practice in Health and Social Care (Neonatal Route) is designed for experienced neonatal nurses who are interested in advancing their skills and Knowledge in neonatal medicine.

The modules will equip you to undertake a junior doctor’s role, whilst practising as an advanced neonatal nurse practitioner. Graduates from this programme also gain the necessary skills and knowledge to act as nurse consultant, lead nurse, clinical educator and clinical researcher, within the primary, secondary, or tertiary healthcare settings. Applicants must hold a minimum of Band 6 clinical post in a neonatal setting.

Objectives

As a student on this course you will develop a clear understanding of the underpinning principles of applied anatomy and physiology.

You will be taught decision-making processes based on a solid foundation of pathophysiology and individualised patient assessment that can be directly applied to your workplace. You will be exposed to the principles of applied pharmacotherapy and emerge as a safe prescribing practitioner with the ability to stand within the modern NHS, bridging the gap between the nursing and medical practice.

You will be encouraged to operate as part of a team, learning the principles of team training, human factors and crisis resource management to which you will be exposed within the workplace. Placements

Academic facilities

The Clinical Skills Centre at City offers students excellent clinical training facilities. You will have access to a simulated 6-bedded high dependency unit (HDU) with realistic equipment including piped oxygen, call bells, medicines and emergency equipment. In addition, medium fidelity simulators and laboratories, including a biology laboratory, allow you to rehearse skills in preparation for practice in a range of placements, including clinics and people's homes.

The School of Health Science is one of the first health schools in the UK to open a Technology Enabled Care Studio, City TECS. City TECS is specially designed studio flat at our Northampton Square campus, fully equipped with the latest telehealth and telecare technologies providing City students with the unique opportunity to learn how to use the latest and future healthcare technologies whilst studying.

Teaching and learning

Students will learn from a variety of student-centred and problem based teaching and learning strategies aimed at developing and assessing knowledge, skills and attitudes. Learning strategies involve shared learning across the MSC programmes. Discipline specific modules are led by senior neonatologist from Barts Health NHS.

There will be extensive use of City's virtual learning platform - Moodle - for a more interactive learning experience.

Assessment

A variety of assessment methods are used to assess the programme learning outcomes. The choice of assessment method will be influenced by the focus and learning outcomes of the modules. If you are a leader or senior manager from the emergency services or prison and probation service, or if you work for local authorities, councils or health organisations and have responsibilities under the Civil Contingencies Act 2004, this programme will enhance your ability to question, analyse, critique and theorise. It will also encourage interoperability and multi-agency cooperation in line with the statutory duty for collaboration between the emergency services introduced in the Police and Crime Bill 2017. What will I study?

How will I study?

The programme typically requires approximately 23.5 hours per week dedicated to research-related activity. The way in which this research is structured is primarily led by you, with supervisory input.

You will also attend scheduled researcher development sessions, ranging from individual personal supervisor-led contact to supported online learning, small group work and teacher-led lectures.

There is a requirement to attend Edge Hill University once per week for core and methodical training in the first semester of the programme, in addition to a total of three weekends across the first two years of the programme for subject-specific researcher training.

Outside of these occasions, attendance on campus will be determined by your individual development needs and the nature of your project.

How will I be assessed?

The programme incorporates three viva examinations where your written submissions are assessed by a team of experts.

The curriculum and competency framework for Advanced Clinical Practitioner training has been developed by The Royal College of Emergency Medicine. This has informed the curriculum content and structure of this programme.

Central to the Advanced Clinical Practitioner educational process is the development of a five year credentialing portfolio, of which a prerequisite is a master's level Advanced Practice award (Royal College of Emergengy Medicine, 2015); this programme aims to fulfil this requirement. The evidence-based credentialing portfolio is not part of the programme and should be completed in partnership with your employing organisation.

The School of Health and Social Care at London South Bank University has been delivering high quality Royal College of Nursing (RCN) accredited Advanced Nurse Practitioner (ANP) education for over 20 years, with demand increasing year on year. While initially the focus was on developing experienced nurses working in primary care settings, this has subsequently expanded to include nurses from secondary and tertiary services.

This course has therefore been developed for both experienced qualified registered nurses and other health professionals working in primary, secondary and tertiary health care settings, who wish to undertake advanced clinical education at master's level. This education will provide high-quality preparation not only for Advanced Nurse Practitioners (ANP) but also for Advanced Clinical Practitioners and health professionals who need to work at a higher level of practice.

RCN Accreditation

While not all of the students undertaking this course will be nurses, other health professionals will benefit from the rigorous standards set by the RCN Accreditation unit for advanced nurse practitioner preparation. Their standards are currently the only quality marker for Advanced Practitioner preparation in England. RCN Accreditation indicates that this course has been evaluated against 15 standards and associated criteria for educational preparation and judged to prepare practitioners to an advanced level (RCN, 2012).

Further, in accordance with the RCN endorsement (2012), the course has also been designed to comply with the Department of Health (England) (2010) position statement on Advanced Level Nursing.

This programme has been accredited by the RCN Centre for Professional Accreditation until 31 August 2021.

Modules

PgDip:

The structure for the course comprises of a prescribed sequence of six compulsory modules, the order depending on the start date (September or January) and the rate of progression.

Each 20 credit module accounts for 200 hours of total student effort. This typically comprises of 36 – 42 classroom contact hours, 14 blended learning activity hours, practice based learning hours (equivalent to a minimum of 3 hours per week) and the remainder for self-directed study.

A range of assessment strategies will be used to reflect the academic, clinical and professional aspects of the programme. This includes use of exams, a written case study, an essay, completion of a Practice Based Learning record including Practice Facilitator feedback and evaluation of practice, OSCEs (Objective Structured Clinical Examination) and production of a clinical portfolio including patient feedback.

The first part of the course includes:

Physiological Principles for Advanced Clinical Practice
Clinical Assessment Skills for Advanced Practice
Non Medical Prescribing

The second part of the course includes:

The Complexity modules share a common learning framework and approach to assessment but the focus, content and assessment requirements are adapted for the context.

MSc (top-up):

Students can progress to undertake the Dissertation module (60 credits) to gain the MSc Advanced Clinical Practice award.

Teaching and learning

There are a range of facilities to support teaching practice skills and simulation. These include the skills laboratories, clinical and simulation equipment, themed notice boards, resources, anatomical models and the media/skills technicians who maintain the labs and prepare for sessions.

Students are supported by a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) using “Moodle”. Students have access to the VLE using a web browser from home, from campus, or when mobile if they have a smart phone or tablet. Open access computers are provided in the Library and Learning Resource Centre on our Southwark campus. These computers enable access to the internet, email, Microsoft office and other supported software. Direct IT helplines are available to support students

E-learning will complement face-to-face delivery for all modules within the course, with 14 specific hours assigned to blended learning activities in each timetable.

Skills workshop

A four day workshop will continue to be provided mid-way through the course, to give the opportunity for students to practise, consolidate and develop their new skills in a supervised, supportive environment. This is currently used as an effective strategy which is very highly evaluated by our students.

Placements

Practice based learning requirements
The Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) (2007) identify that learning within the work place is integral to a higher education programme and is demonstrated through engagement within the practice environment. This is particularly important for preparation for a course of this nature; for any students, even those with many years of experience, some of the areas covered by the programme will be new such as history-taking, physical examination skills, ordering and interpreting investigations, making differential diagnoses, pharmacology, prescribing, social sciences and mental health assessment, etc. One of the key requirements for the course is that the practice experience provides learning opportunities that enable students to achieve the course learning outcomes (RCN, 2012) and so in order to ensure this, learning in practice is purposely structured and assessed.

Students will spend the equivalent of 3 hours per week working in a "supernumerary capacity" in order to focus specifically on their clinical and professional development. This requirement extends beyond the University semesters to include the summer periods.

Practice Based Learning is supported through identification of a doctor/qualified Advanced Practitioner to act as the student's "Practice Facilitator" to initially supervise and subsequently support their clinical development. Other experienced senior clinicians can also supervise and support student development.

Evidence of practice based learning (36 hours of direct supervision and 180 hours of indirect supervised clinical practice) and feedback on progress is used as an element of assessment on the following modules: 1. Clinical Assessment Skills for Advanced Practice [Level 7] 2. Clinical Reasoning in Advanced Practice [Level 7] 3. Managing Complexity in Advanced Clinical Practice [Level 7]

The overall total for supervised hours through successful completion of these modules is 648 hours.

Graduate and employer surveys and feedback indicate our graduates are making a positive impact on patient care and service innovation in general practices, walk-in centres, urgent care centres, minor injury units, emergency departments, projects for refugees, asylum seekers and homeless populations, elderly care facilities, “out of hours” developments, rapid response services, intermediate care teams, prison services, acute medical and surgical teams, critical-care outreach and specialist hospital services.

Some of our graduates are now lead nurses within social enterprises, nurse partners in general practices, nurse representatives on commissioning boards, community matrons and consultant nurses. To date two graduates have gone on to pursue doctoral studies.

Professional accreditation

Applicants who wish to undertake some clinical streams of study - (Emergency Nursing, Mental Health Nursing, Intensive Care Nursing or Nurse Practitioner) will be required to have registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency and appropriate clinical employment in an approved clinical agency prior to application. Please see entry requirements that relate to the relevant specialisation for more details.

Progression to further studies

Students entering at Entry levels 1 and 2 can complete a research thesis (24 points) that will provide a pathway to a higher degree by research.

Alternative exit(s)

Students may exit this course early and apply to graduate with one of the following awards, provided they have satisfied the requirements for that award during their enrolment in the Masters course:

- Graduate Certificate of Advanced Nursing after successful completion of 24 points with a minimum of 18 credit points at level 4 or above. Students who complete 24 points from a particular specialisation in Part A will have the name of the specialisation on their transcript.

- Graduate Diploma of Advanced Nursing after successful completion of 48 points, with a minimum of 36 credit points at level 4 or above. Students who complete 24 points from a particular specialisation in Part A will have the name of the specialisation on their transcript.
