This course is aimed at applicants who are training to become an advanced clinical practitioner in a wide variety of healthcare settings. It is intended for experienced healthcare professionals and for those wishing to formalise and develop their role as an advanced clinical practitioner. The course seeks to focus on decision-making, diagnostics, therapeutics, and clinical management. You share learning with others from an extensive range of multi-professional backgrounds to create a vibrant and challenging learning environment.
The core modules focus on the four elements of advanced practice • clinical practice • education • managerial/leadership • research and flexibility is built into this course to enable you to tailor the course and focus on your area of specialism using a wide choice of elective modules.
Recognition of prior credited learning and recognition of prior experiential learning have been adopted for these awards to facilitate entry to the course.

This course is designed to provide a platform of essential skills, supported by a variety of pathways that provides you with a genuine choice. This range seeks to provide you with the opportunity to critically discuss cases, demonstrate knowledge within a simulation and develop critical appraisal skills.
You also take part in practical assessments that are designed to ensure that you are safe and able to make judicious clinical decisions based on your knowledge and understanding. The range of your practice related learning is recorded and documented in the Personal and Professional Development Portfolio (PPDP), which is a personal record of learning through the course. The format of your e-portfolio will be dependent on local and professional body requirements.
The course is structured around a combination of both core and elective modules, some of which are delivered via distance learning.

Successful completion of the MSc Advanced Clinical Practice will prepare you to seek an Advanced Clinical Practitioner (ACP) post or if already employed as a trainee ACP, to formalise this post with a nationally recognised academic qualification. Successful completion also provides the practitioner with the skill set to take on a more strategic leadership role within a secondary or primary health care setting.

This course has been designed for experienced Adult or Child nurses working in senior positions or those who are preparing for advanced nurse practitioner, care manager, nurse consultant or clinical leadership roles in primary, secondary, or tertiary healthcare settings.
As part of the course you will be required to complete a clinical work placement with appropriate supervision for physical assessment; therefore applicants must be nurses working in senior clinical positions.
As a student on this course you will learn to work as an expert autonomous practitioner within all fields of healthcare.
You will gain contemporary theoretical and professional skills and knowledge in areas including clinical and direct care practice; leadership and collaborative practice; improving quality and developing practice for the self and others, for advance practice.

Students will need to undertake a minimum of 500 supervised supernumerary clinical hours for the duration of the course.
The Clinical Skills Centre at City offers students excellent clinical training facilities. You will have access to a simulated six-bedded high dependency unit (HDU) with realistic equipment including piped oxygen, call bells, medicines and emergency equipment. In addition, medium fidelity simulators and laboratories, including a biology laboratory, will allow you to rehearse skills in preparation for practice in a range of placements, including clinics and people's homes.

City TECS is specially designed studio flat at our Northampton Square campus, fully equipped with the latest telehealth and telecare technologies providing City students with the unique opportunity to learn how to use the latest and future healthcare technologies while studying.
You will learn from a variety of student-centred and patient-focused teaching, learning and assessment strategies aimed at developing and assessing different knowledge, skills and attitudes. Learning strategies involve shared learning across Adult and Child routes with further consideration and specialisation for intensive branch specific tutorials.
You will have the opportunity to work within your practice or other health care settings, and learn from lecturers who are experienced advanced nurse practitioners engaged in active clinical practice. There will be extensive use of City's Virtual Learning Platform - Moodle - for a more interactive learning experience.
Assessment strategies include coursework, examinations, reports, seminar presentations, portfolios, skills schedules and objective structured clinical examinations (OSCEs). You may be expected to take part in formative assessment activities during the modules in addition to the summative assessments for each module.
The course can only be undertaken on a part-time basis due to the clinical stream required. Students will usually attend lectures one day a week and consolidate their practice for the rest of the week.
In addition students will need to undertake a minimum of 500 supervised supernumerary clinical hours for the duration of the course.
As a graduate you will be able to influence nursing practice at both direct and indirect levels through the development of services and the application of research to clinical practice.
The course will prepare you for a range of roles including advanced nurse practitioner, nurse consultant and senior nurse manager in all healthcare settings working across the lifespan. Successful completion of the course fulfils the requirements for advanced practitioner roles in a range of health and social care contexts and qualifies students to apply for research posts and to conduct independent research.
This programme has been accredited by the RCN Centre for Professional Accreditation until September 2018.
This programme has been developed in response to an emerging healthcare role, namely the Advanced Clinical Practitioner (ACP). It is designed to equip and enhance the healthcare practitioner with knowledge and skills in the expanding field of advanced practice, especially within secondary care.
The curriculum and competency framework for Advanced Clinical Practitioner training has been developed by The Royal College of Emergency Medicine. This has informed the curriculum content and structure of this programme.
Central to the Advanced Clinical Practitioner educational process is the development of a five year credentialing portfolio, of which a prerequisite is a master's level Advanced Practice award (Royal College of Emergengy Medicine, 2015); this programme aims to fulfil this requirement. The evidence-based credentialing portfolio is not part of the programme and should be completed in partnership with your employing organisation.

This programme will provide you with the core skills and knowledge required in advanced practice, as well as exploring both the professional and practice elements essential to work at an advanced level. Furthermore, it aims to map to the skills and knowledge framework to assist career development.
The enhanced skills of analysis that students will gain through this programme of study may lead to promotional opportunities either in the clinical area, or in the fields of education, management or research. Students will have access to progression to doctoral studies in their specific subject context, and the generic, transferable skills acquired throughout the programme may also open up employment opportunities outside these areas.
