About the Course

Our Emergency Medicine programme offers professional development and an academic qualification for nurses and physicians in emergency contexts. Three distinct study routes are available and all have been designed entirely by physicians and nurses experienced in emergency care. Teaching is online and based around a virtual hospital with problem-based learning and online discussions with colleagues and fellow students.

The course is made up of two phases. Phase One provides a range of core and elective units from which students can select their personalised route. Phase Two consists of a substantial practitioner project in a chosen field of emergency medicine.

The units depend on the route you wish to follow and the elective units chosen build on this to explore particular interests. Units are offered on a rolling programme so over the course of your study, almost all units are likely to be available. Students are able to choose to study to Postgraduate Certificate or Postgraduate Diploma level or to continue their studies to achieve a Masters level qualification.

Our blended learning PGCert in Advanced Specialist Training in Emergency Medicine enables registered pharmacists to independently evaluate and assess patients who present to the emergency department.

You will also build the knowledge and skills needed to independently recommend and/or prescribe appropriate medicines for emergency treatment.

Hospital pharmacists will be able to manage emergency department patients in addition to working as part of a multidisciplinary emergency team upon completion of the course.

The course consists of two 30-credit postgraduate short courses: Independent Prescribing andAdvanced Clinical Skills . Independent Prescribing is accredited by the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC).

Aims

This course aims to produce graduates who:

  • are able to independently evaluate and assess patients with minor injuries and illnesses and, if necessary, independently recommend and/or prescribe appropriate medicines for their treatment;
  • have the skills, knowledge and attributes required for safe and effective prescribing practice to successfully meet the standards set out by the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC), enabling students to apply for registration to practice as independent prescribers;

Additional course information

The need for this course has been identified through national pilot work, where the impact of pharmacists in emergency departments working as independent prescribers with advanced clinical skills was assessed.

This assessment showed that hospital pharmacists with these additional skills of independent prescribing and advanced clinical assessment could manage up to 35.7% of patients presenting to the emergency department (ED).

The role for pharmacists working in the ED is an exciting opportunity to work in a new field of practice.

Teaching and learning

We use a blended format where learning is supported through online teaching materials delivered through Manchester's virtual learning environment (VLE).

Flipped classroom strategies will allow theory and knowledge-based learning to be delivered online in weekly segments, and face-to-face learning will be utilised for skills and problem-based learning.

There will be up to eight mandatory face-to-face sessions in each unit to focus on problem-based and collaborative teaching strategies.

These sessions will also support the delivery of medical examination, consultation and Advanced Clinical Skills course components.

The structured online programme will support these contact days and allow you to learn at a time that is convenient to you, providing flexibility around your work commitments.

The MSc and Diploma
The MSc is a 3-year 180 credit MSc, including a 60 credit 10000+/- 500 word dissertation in year 3. It offers two years of structured web based teaching via an online learning platform. For students who wish not to complete a dissertation in year 3, a 2-year Diploma is offered based on the lectures, tutorials and course work.

This course commences September 2017
The course is online, allowing you to study at your own pace and in your own time, enabling you to continue with your work commitments. It provides an excellent structured learning platform for trainees and specialists to develop skills in this area. Lectures are delivered by leading experts in the field with the same lecturer/course leads offering weekly tutorials.

In the first two years the course offers 8 modules covering different areas of critical care. Each of the eight modules runs over 10 weeks, In year 3 the 60-credit dissertation is completed by students completing the MSc.

The role of pharmacists in the emergency department offers an exciting opportunity to work in a new field of practice. Pharmacists are also extending their scope of practice in urgent and acute medicine areas in primary and secondary care.

Our six-month Advanced Clinical Skills short course enables trainee pharmacy practitioners to independently evaluate, assess and recommend or prescribe medicines for patients who present to emergency departments.

This will allow junior and senior medical staff to attend to more urgent medical patients in a clinical setting and aims to decrease waiting times for patients with minor injuries. Research has shown that hospital pharmacists with additional skills in independent prescribing and advanced clinical assessment could manage up to 35.7% of patients presenting to emergency departments.

Upon successful completion of the course, you will be able to manage emergency and urgent patients in addition to working as part of a multidisciplinary emergency, acute medicine and urgent care team.

Our course confers 30 postgraduate (Level 7) credits upon completion and can be taken as a standalone course by pharmacists who are already non-medical prescribers. If you are not already a non-medical prescriber, you can take this course before starting our Independent Prescribing short course . Completing both of these courses within two years of registering will lead to a PGCert in Advanced Specialist Training in Emergency Medicine .

Teaching and learning

The unit introduces pharmacists to the underpinning knowledge and understanding of the assessment and the management of patients who are requiring urgent care and who are at risk of becoming acutely unwell.

Working in the clinical environment (emergency department, acute medicine or urgent care setting), this unit will build on existing knowledge of the use of a structured and systematic approach in the assessment of the urgent care patient, identifying the need for physiological and holistic care.

Practitioners can develop competencies in a specific patient group and provide patient-centred care for cohorts of patients in emergency or urgent care whom they are likely to manage within their scope of practice.

This MSc will provide you with the knowledge and skills to manage sports injuries and illness and to explore the relationship between physical activity and health.

The clinical SEM course is aimed at doctors, physiotherapists and allied professionals with a strong musculoskeletal clinical background. We feel strongly that the range of backgrounds of the students provides students with a rounded education, drawing on the wide ranging clinical experience and different expertise of the students and lecturers.

Key facts

Clinical exposure - The MSc offers students the opportunity to sit in Sports Medicine clinics with consultant SEM doctors and physiotherapists. In these clinics the student will have exposure to all sections of the community, children, recreational athletes, elite athletes and the elderly. The student will see a wide ranging spectrum of musculoskeletal problems and first hand investigation and treatment.

Face to face teaching - One of the strengths of the Nottingham MSc is the face to face teaching that take place. This allows students real time interaction with clinicians, scientists and lecturers, enabling in depth exchange of knowledge and ideas. We believe that with this the student has a much greater understanding of the subject than with distance learning.

Pitch side exposure - Included in the fees is a Gold standard pitch side emergency care course (EMMiITS). This takes place at the beginning of the academic year and success in this course enables the student to undertake pitch side emergency care at the weekly BUCS matches. Students may wish to undertake a placement with a professional team and we will facilitate this whether ever possible.

Full and part-time option - As many of our students are practising professionals we have developed a range of study options to enable them to continue with their clinical practice whilst studying. The full time course is undertaken over one year. The part time course covers the same modules but can be taken over 2, 3, or 4 years.

Research projects - The research projects are a key strength of the course. Students are encouraged to undertake a project in a field of interest. However we acknowledge that not all students will be able to do this and we have a range of projects within the department that students can undertake, within both clinical SEM and also in nutrition and muscle physiology within the School of Life Sciences. International students have the opportunity to develop research and undertake research projects within their home country.

Course quality - The MSc has a faculty of excellent internal and external lecturers of all disciplines, all experts in their field. Many of the lecturers work at a national and international level in Sport and Exercise Medicine. Established in 1991, the MSc Sports and Exercise Medicine is one of the longest running SEM courses in the country and is constantly updated and improved. This successful programme is recognised nationally and internationally as one of the top sports and exercise medicine courses for the rounded sports medicine specialist.

This course is now delivered as part of the National Centre for Sport and Exercise Medicine – East Midlands (NCSEM-EM), which is a London 2012 legacy funded project aimed at improving the health and wellbeing of the nation.

Structure

The MSc Sports and Exercise Medicine can be taken full-time over one year or part-time over two to four years. As an MSc student, you will study a series of core modules in sports and exercise medicine, which includes research methods tutorials, in addition to the compulsory project and dissertation module. This is an exciting opportunity to undertake research on a subject related to sports and exercise medicine or exercise physiology under the supervision of an appropriate member of academic staff. There are also a wide variety of optional modules to meet your specific interests.

This course can also be taken as a Postgraduate Diploma (PGDip) by those who do not wish to complete a research project and dissertation. The PGDip can be taken full-time over 9 months or part-time over 18 months.

The syllabus is covered by lectures, seminars, sport placements, anatomy teaching in our dissection room, eLearning and practical sessions. The course includes a two-day programme in Emergency Medical Management in Individual and Team Sports (EMMiITS).

The programme provides doctors, physiotherapists and osteopaths interested in sport and exercise medicine with:
- The necessary scientific background knowledge to appreciate the issues arising in the field of sport and exercise medicine.

- Up-to-date training in modern methods of diagnosing and treating sports injuries, including emergency care.

- The necessary skills and knowledge to provide advice on the prevention of sports injuries.

- An introduction to research appropriate to the field of sport and exercise medicine.

- Opportunities to learn about the theory and application of sport and exercise science in a sporting context

- The opportunity to build upon previous research experience.

- An opportunity to undertake a piece of discipline related research activity as exemplified by the dissertation project.

- The full time course will include attachments to sporting teams for the student to gain experience and insight into working within a multidisciplinary team in a high-level sporting environment.

MSc
Students successfully progressing through the taught course onto MSc will be expected to conduct an original piece of research (6,500 – 8,000 words or equivalent) on an aspect of applied sport and exercise medicine. They will be assigned a tutor to support them in their research.​

Learning & Teaching​

Teaching and learning methods will include workshops, lectures, clinical assessments, student presentations and individual study. Clinical skills will be taught in small groups with students required to participate as patients, examiners and examinees. Students will be able to access remotely all lectures via a virtual learning environment; internet and online search facilities can be accessed via the university learning resources web page.

Participation in a clinical placement in sport and exercise medicine environment/sports injuries clinic; delivery from a wide range of professionals involved in sport and exercise medicine and sport and exercise science, and the opportunity to work with fellow professionals who are involved in supporting elite performers at national and international level will also be offered as part of the programme.

Assessment

All modules will be assessed by coursework and the clinical attachment will be assessed by a viva voce examination. Clinical competence will be assessed via an objective structured clinical experience (OSCE).

Clinical placement

Students will be expected to spend eight 10-week placements at other UK NHS Trusts. A minimum of two terms will be spent at any one trust hospital. This will provide exposure to a broader clinical experience.

Speciality conferences

During the course of all MD programmes, the teaching plans of individual specialities include attendance at a number of internationally recognised speciality medical conferences within the UK. This affords the MD fellows the opportunity to hear lectures and debates and attend workshops involving internationally renowned speakers on matters of contemporary interest, and to experience the controversies of cutting-edge research in the medical specialities concerned.

Grand Rounds (Ealing Hospital)

At lunch-time each Thursday a Grand Round presentation takes place at Ealing Hospital Postgraduate Centre, in the tradition of all prestigious British postgraduate medical teaching establishments. Consultant staff from medical specialities lead presentations of interesting and unusual clinical cases, followed by a lively session of questions and debate on medical issues raised. Some of the sessions are provided by invited medical speakers of international reputation. Recent advances in medical practice and a wide range of controversial and topical medical issues are discussed with the benefit of authoritative input from senior medical colleagues. This extremely valuable educational resource is part of the routine weekly schedule for all MD fellows.

The Quality Assurance Agency, QAA, is an independent body which checks the quality of UK higher education through an institutional audit. The University of Buckingham voluntarily takes part in this audit process.

Physician Associates support doctors in the diagnosis and management of patients. They are trained to perform a number of roles including: taking medical histories, performing examinations, analysing test results, and diagnosing illnesses under the direct supervision of a doctor.

Course details

The University of Birmingham has been training Physician Associates (formerly Physician Assistants) since January 2008.  As one of the longest running programmes in the country, we are delighted to offer this opportunity to graduates to make a valuable contribution to the nation’s health. We work in partnership with hospitals and practices in the Midlands and beyond.

The development of the profession has been led by the Department of Health and has involved the Royal Colleges of Physicians and of General Practitioners as well as the profession itself through the former UK Association of Physician Associates (UKAPA) which is now the Faculty of Physician Associates at the Royal College of Physicians. University of Birmingham staff have taken a key role in the development of the programme at a national as well as a regional level in response to need identified by local healthcare providers. Successful completion of the programme will qualify you to practise as a Physician Associate in the UK.

Please note: the UK PA training programme does not qualify you to work in the USA.

The course 

The course leaders regard integration of theory and practice as fundamental to clinical learning.

  • This course is two, full time, calendar years in duration, each lasting approximately 48 weeks, plus an additional month. You can expect to be studying 50+ hours per week.
  • Theory is learned mostly through case/problem based learning and you will experience medicine in both hospital and community attachments.
  • The rich ethnic and socio-economic diversity of the 5.5 million strong West Midlands population offers unrivalled opportunities for clinical learning, with placements seeking to optimise this.
  • Right from the beginning, you will have contact with patients, as during the first term, students are placed for up to five days of clinical experience within a General Practice in either the West Midlands or beyond.  
  • This is followed by a fourteen-week hospital attachment in the second term, and a further few days of General Practice in the third term. Students will use the cases collected during the second term as the basis of their learning within the third term.
  • The second year continues the problem-based learning approach and integrates further learning and placements in Acute and Emergency Medicine, Child Health General Practice, Mental Health, Reproductive Health and Surgery.
  • Throughout the course, you will receive teaching in a variety of forms, including lectures, seminars, tutorials, group work, and bedside demonstrations. 
  • Simulation is fundamental to this course, using simulated patients (who will teach you communication and examination skills, including gynaecological and urological examination). Simulation aims both to prepare you for the clinical world and to train you in a safe, non-threatening environment.
  • Progression exams are undertaken at the nine months mark, and again at twenty-three months into the course. Students are required to pass both sets of examinations prior to entry into the National Assessment. 
  • Assessment types will include Multiple Choice Question (MCQ) paper(s), Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCE), Case Write-Ups, Presentations and Professional Behaviour sign-offs. 

Regulation

All students will be registered with the Faculty of Physician Associates at the Royal College of Physicians. Graduates currently join a Managed Voluntary Register.

Learning and teaching

This is a very intense course with a large amount of knowledge and skills to acquire in a relatively short time. You will need to dedicate at least 50 hours each week to learning, much of it by yourself and with your learning set.

At the University of Birmingham we believe in very close integration between the theory learning (‘the hip is a ball and socket joints and the femur anatomy is as follows’ and clinical learning (‘when people fracture their hips it happens like this, they present like this, and your understanding of the hip anatomy enables you to understand why and how hips fracture’). You will also link theory and practice by learning, say, how to examine a hip on each other, on a simulated patient and (often) on a real patient before you see such a patient in a clinical environment.

Employability

Birmingham-trained Physician Associates have been very successful in the NHS jobs market with most of our graduates on NHS Agenda for Change Band 7 (starting at £31,383 p,a.) or higher.

Our graduates are working all across the UK (although about half have stayed in the West Midlands) and in a wide range of specialties including: general medicine, acute medicine, cardiology, paediatrics, breast surgery, trauma and orthopaedics, mental health, emergency medicine and General Practice. Many have also chosen to go into teaching and research (part-time while maintaining clinical duties), with five of our graduates currently teaching here at Birmingham.

The number of NHS Trusts and Practices seeking Physician Associates (and the average number working for each Trust/Practice) has increased rapidly throughout the last few years, and we would expect that number to continue to increase at a similar pace over the next few years.

Overview

ScotGEM is a unique and innovative four-year graduate entry medical programme focused on enthusing graduates to become generalist practitioners (not necessarily GPs), with experience in rural health care and healthcare improvement. The programme will prepare students for any branch of medicine with appropriate further training.

ScotGEM uses the existing strengths of medical teaching in the Universities of St Andrews and Dundee and our local health boards in Fife and Tayside, in collaboration with NHS Highland, NHS Dumfries and Galloway and the University of Highlands and Islands. The first year will be based at the University of St Andrews and within Fife, components of the course in the second, third and potentially fourth years will include periods of living and studying in other regions of Scotland.

A bursary of £4,000 each year will be available to all students, those who accept the bursary will complete a return of service to NHS Scotland of one year for each year of bursary accepted. Return of service, sometimes known as bonding, will commence at the start of Foundation training.

First year

From week one, your learning will be focused around real patient scenarios using an approach known as Case Based Learning. Semester one will use cases to focus on foundational medical sciences to underpin subsequent more challenging scenarios. Consultation skills will be introduced early alongside topics such as biochemistry, pharmacology and anatomy and weekly clinical experience in the community. The course is designed as a spiral in which the complexity and challenge of the cases builds as you and your peers become more effective learners.

Semester two focuses on body systems so that related regional anatomy and examination skills can be learnt in parallel. You will be engaged in small group workplace-based learning for one day per week, supported in the community by dedicated Generalist Clinical Mentors (GCM) who are trained GP tutors.

Second year

Second year is largely structured around the lifecycle but will be delivered in different regions. You will be expected to spend some weeks away from Fife with opportunity to study in Tayside, the Highlands and Dumfries and Galloway. NHS Boards will provide accommodation when required. You will continue to work for a day each week with a GCM in their practice but also spend an additional half day in a specialist clinical environment. Second year closes by providing experience of unscheduled care (GP, Emergency department, ambulance etc.) and two periods of project work related to five underpinning Vertical Themes (Informatics, Quality Improvement, Prescribing and therapeutics, Public health and community engagement).

Throughout the course these five Vertical Themes will also develop expertise as ‘agents of change’ within the health service. For example, students might work with a group of general practices to research and analyse prescribing patterns before implementing an agreed improvement.

Third year

Third year is designed as a Longitudinal Integrated Clerkship with students being immersed into a community for the duration of the year. You will be based in a general practice, seeing many patients each week and following a selection through their illness journey. This approach works especially well for graduates and has been shown to develop more patient-centred doctors with improved decision-making skills.

Fourth year

Fourth year offers you, as a now competent generalist student, the opportunity to be immersed in the hospital environment and prepare yourself for work as a junior doctor through two one-month Foundation Apprenticeships and other hospital based clinical attachments. You may choose areas of particular interest, perhaps a potential career choice, which you can experience in greater depth. You will also arrange an eight-week elective of your choice.

Upon successful completion of the ScotGEM programme, graduates will receive a primary medical qualification (PMQ), which allows them to apply for subsequent postgraduate training in any specialty through normal routes. It also entitles graduates to provisional registration with the General Medical Council.

Teaching

The ScotGEM course will be based on clinical cases from the outset. These will be supported by a set of learning objectives, lectures, practical classes, tutorials, simulated and ‘real’ clinical and consultation skills plus extensive supported independent and peer-peer learning.

Your learning will be underpinned by a sophisticated online Curriculum Management System (GEMonline), which will give access to a wide range of resources and enable progress to be monitored for all including the geographically dispersed class from second year.

Increasingly, especially in second year, learning will become more self-directed and you will be reliant upon yourself and your peers to explore, investigate and learn from the cases (guided by clear learning objectives with synchronised centrally organised teaching). This approach will set you up well for learning based on real patients in the clinical environment.

The Longitudinal Integrated Clerkship in third year will allow you to join a team and learn whilst becoming increasingly involved in patient care. You will select patients to follow through and study them, their conditions and their care in more detail. Where relevant you will attend specialist clinics, operations etc. as you follow these individuals’ journey through the healthcare system.

Finally, in fourth year, you will experience intensive hospital attachments that involve shadowing Foundation Doctors and other secondary care attachments.

Assessment

Each year will require you to pass assessments of knowledge, clinical skills and a portfolio demonstrating professional development.

  • In first and second year you will be assessed on your knowledge using a mix of online multiple choice questions and short answer written assessments. Third year will use online multiple choice questions aligned with the planned General Medical Council common exam (Medical Licencing Assessment).
  • In every year, there will be a portfolio assessment based on a mixture of engagement with learning, workplace-based performance and project work related to the Vertical Themes.
  • In every year, there will be an Objective Structured Clinical Examination.
  • The assessments will be selected specifically for the ScotGEM course but drawing heavily upon those available within both medical schools. Thus, your progress will be benchmarked against existing UK standards throughout.

The MSc Applied Sport and Exercise Medicine can be taken full-time over one year or part-time over two to four years

As an MSc student, you will study a series of core modules in sports and exercise medicine. This includes taking an emergency care qualification; studying anatomy with images, in the dissecting room and on each other; learning about physical activity recommendations for special groups (e.g. people with diabetes); as well as comprehensive research methods tutorials, in addition to the compulsory project and dissertation module.

This is an exciting opportunity to undertake research on a subject related to sports and exercise medicine or exercise physiology under the supervision of an appropriate member of academic staff. There are also a wide variety of optional modules, so you can tailor this degree to your requirements.

Modules

MSc students take a combination of compulsory and optional modules to gain 180 credits.

Compulsory modules (totalling 140 credits)

  • Module A34616 - Physical Activity in Health and Disease (20 credits)
  • Module A34621 - Research Methods (10 credits)
  • Module A34631 - Project and Dissertation: Sports and Exercise Medicine (60 credits)
  • Module A34634 - Physical Activity Epidemiology (10 credits)
  • Module A34635 - Sport and Exercise Nutrition (10 credits)
  • Module A34636 - Fundamentals in Statistics (10 credits)

Students can also choose modules totalling a further 40 credits from a selection of optional modules. Full details can be found online.
