The need for this course has been identified through national pilot work, where the impact of pharmacists in emergency departments working as independent prescribers with advanced clinical skills was assessed.
This assessment showed that hospital pharmacists with these additional skills of independent prescribing and advanced clinical assessment could manage up to 35.7% of patients presenting to the emergency department (ED).
The role for pharmacists working in the ED is an exciting opportunity to work in a new field of practice.
We use a blended format where learning is supported through online teaching materials delivered through Manchester's virtual learning environment (VLE).
Flipped classroom strategies will allow theory and knowledge-based learning to be delivered online in weekly segments, and face-to-face learning will be utilised for skills and problem-based learning.
There will be up to eight mandatory face-to-face sessions in each unit to focus on problem-based and collaborative teaching strategies.

The role of pharmacists in the emergency department offers an exciting opportunity to work in a new field of practice. Pharmacists are also extending their scope of practice in urgent and acute medicine areas in primary and secondary care.
Our six-month Advanced Clinical Skills short course enables trainee pharmacy practitioners to independently evaluate, assess and recommend or prescribe medicines for patients who present to emergency departments.
This will allow junior and senior medical staff to attend to more urgent medical patients in a clinical setting and aims to decrease waiting times for patients with minor injuries. Research has shown that hospital pharmacists with additional skills in independent prescribing and advanced clinical assessment could manage up to 35.7% of patients presenting to emergency departments.
Upon successful completion of the course, you will be able to manage emergency and urgent patients in addition to working as part of a multidisciplinary emergency, acute medicine and urgent care team.
Our course confers 30 postgraduate (Level 7) credits upon completion and can be taken as a standalone course by pharmacists who are already non-medical prescribers. The unit introduces pharmacists to the underpinning knowledge and understanding of the assessment and the management of patients who are requiring urgent care and who are at risk of becoming acutely unwell.
Working in the clinical environment (emergency department, acute medicine or urgent care setting), this unit will build on existing knowledge of the use of a structured and systematic approach in the assessment of the urgent care patient, identifying the need for physiological and holistic care.
Practitioners can develop competencies in a specific patient group and provide patient-centred care for cohorts of patients in emergency or urgent care whom they are likely to manage within their scope of practice.

Our online Acute Medicine courses are offered in conjunction with our partner, the University of South Wales, who have developed a strong reputation for delivering innovative learning. With rapid growth within this specialty, the Acute Medicine course has been designed to improve the knowledge of healthcare professionals who assist in the delivery of care to acutely ill patients.
Acute medicine is the bedrock of hospital-based medicine and emergency care. In 1998, the Royal College of Physicians published a joint report emphasising the importance of appropriate care for patients with acute medical problems. This is a rapidly evolving specialty, and with many generalist healthcare professionals undertaking acute medicine as part of their daily routines, our course answers the demand for further tailored education (particularly at Masters Level). A distinctive aspect of our course is that it allows healthcare professionals to study at post-graduate level without release from work. With no lectures or webinars at set times, students can fit their studies flexibly around their personal and professional commitments.
The primary aims of the course are to equip students with a systematic understanding of acute medicine, skills in critical appraisal and application of knowledge for direct patient benefit. In addition to this, students will benefit from being taught life-long learning and advanced problem-solving skills that they can apply to clinical practice in acute medicine.
Applicants taking our courses in Acute Medicine will typically be doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, pharmacists and radiographers. For healthcare professionals who successfully complete a qualification, career progression would likely be facilitated, as well as the direct opportunity to improve patient care.

As this a rapidly evolving speciality and as many generalist healthcare professionals undertake acute medicine as part of their daily routines, there is a demand for tailored education, particularly at Masters Level. In response to this, we have developed our Postgraduate Diploma in Acute Medicine, which has been specifically designed to enable students to consolidate their skills in the subject while fitting their studies flexibly around their personal and professional commitments. The ethos of the course is to develop a systematic understanding of evidence-based, protocol delivered practice, which is crucial in optimising acute care.
As per other specialties, acute medicine is multi-disciplinary, particularly with the advent of physician assistants and specialist nurse practitioners. This course is therefore aimed at the multi-disciplinary team, covering the major spectrum of disease areas that would present acutely. Thus, the PGDip in Acute Medicine is a theoretical course that aims to supplement the education of existing healthcare professionals, as opposed to a practical course in acute medicine.

The Acute Medicine masters course provides a progression route from the Postgraduate Diploma course in Acute Medicine.
The MSc in Acute Medicine runs over 1 calendar year. Starting with an initial 12-week online module to develop skills in critical appraisal and knowledge of research methodologies, students then choose either the professional project module which consists of a 1,500 word proposal and 10,500 word professional.

Detailed theory teaching and clinical training is given in all sub-specialities of General Internal Medicine with emphasis on clinically relevant, state-of-the-art and topical issues. The entire curriculum will be taught over 8 terms (for the 2-year MD), with one module per term and 4 terms each year. Students taking the combined Research cum Clinical MD programme will take the MSc in Medical Research in the Clore Laboratory in their first year and then follow the 2-year MD programme.

Students will be expected to spend eight 10-week placements at other UK NHS Trusts. A minimum of two terms will be spent at any one trust hospital. This will provide exposure to a broader clinical experience.
During the course of all MD programmes, the teaching plans of individual specialities include attendance at a number of internationally recognised speciality medical conferences within the UK. This affords the MD fellows the opportunity to hear lectures and debates and attend workshops involving internationally renowned speakers on matters of contemporary interest, and to experience the controversies of cutting-edge research in the medical specialities concerned.
At lunch-time each Thursday a Grand Round presentation takes place at Ealing Hospital Postgraduate Centre, in the tradition of all prestigious British postgraduate medical teaching establishments. Consultant staff from medical specialities lead presentations of interesting and unusual clinical cases, followed by a lively session of questions and debate on medical issues raised. Some of the sessions are provided by invited medical speakers of international reputation. Recent advances in medical practice and a wide range of controversial and topical medical issues are discussed with the benefit of authoritative input from senior medical colleagues. This extremely valuable educational resource is part of the routine weekly schedule for all MD fellows.

Whether you are currently working in sport or aspire to work in sport at any level, the course will enhance your skills in assessment, management and rehabilitation of sports injuries and common medical conditions. As a student studying Sports Medicine you will also learn essential skills for health & injury screening assisting in prevention of injury and safe participation in sport. You will learn advanced trauma management skills enabling you to feel confident in working with a team, an individual athlete or in populations with common medical conditions. This will be supported by a member of the Medical School who has worked as a Consultant and Lecturer in Emergency Medicine and instructed on both the European Trauma and the FA AREA course.
Many modules will have classroom sessions supported with online learning material. Your module tutors will guide you as to the preparation required for teaching sessions and whilst they will sometimes give specific guidance, at master’s level it is expected that you take some initiative to read around the session topic so that you can contribute to classroom discussions. The emphasis will be on problem - based learning where a student will be facilitated to engage in deep learning and enquiry. Blackboard, our online learning platform, will be used to support this process.
All the staff teaching on the course are experienced clinicians and have many years of experience in education. Each staff member is delivering modules within their area of expertise and so you can be sure that you are being taught by staff who are at the forefront of their field. All staff are involved in research within their clinical and/or academic field, and where it is relevant to the module you are studying, the research will be shared with you. In some modules we also bring in experienced, practising clinicians with current expertise in an aspect of the module; this enables us to blend academic expertise, clinical knowledge and current clinical experience and to give you access to people who are able to ensure that your learning experience enables you to meet the demands of the current clinical environment.
On completion of the course you will have the necessary skills to pursue a career in Sports Medicine. You will also have developed valuable research skills that will allow you to continue with your education. After completing the degree, students will be encouraged not only to consider a position in Sports Medicine but to also consider further educational opportunities such as progressing on to a PhD or Professional Doctorate pathway. Physician Associate (formerly known as Physician Assistant) is a rapidly growing healthcare role in the UK, working alongside doctors in hospitals and in GP surgeries. Physician Associates support doctors in the diagnosis and management of patients. They are trained to perform a number of roles including: taking medical histories, performing examinations, analysing test results, and diagnosing illnesses under the direct supervision of a doctor.

The development of the profession has been led by the Department of Health and has involved the Royal Colleges of Physicians and of General Practitioners as well as the profession itself through the former UK Association of Physician Associates (UKAPA) which is now the Faculty of Physician Associates at the Royal College of Physicians. University of Birmingham staff have taken a key role in the development of the programme at a national as well as a regional level in response to need identified by local healthcare providers. The course leaders regard integration of theory and practice as fundamental to clinical learning.
This is a very intense course with a large amount of knowledge and skills to acquire in a relatively short time. You will need to dedicate at least 50 hours each week to learning, much of it by yourself and with your learning set.
At the University of Birmingham we believe in very close integration between the theory learning (‘the hip is a ball and socket joints and the femur anatomy is as follows’ and clinical learning (‘when people fracture their hips it happens like this, they present like this, and your understanding of the hip anatomy enables you to understand why and how hips fracture’). You will also link theory and practice by learning, say, how to examine a hip on each other, on a simulated patient and (often) on a real patient before you see such a patient in a clinical environment.
Birmingham-trained Physician Associates have been very successful in the NHS jobs market with most of our graduates on NHS Agenda for Change Band 7 (starting at £31,383 p,a.) or higher.
Our graduates are working all across the UK (although about half have stayed in the West Midlands) and in a wide range of specialties including: general medicine, acute medicine, cardiology, paediatrics, breast surgery, trauma and orthopaedics, mental health, emergency medicine and General Practice. Building on prior learning at an undergraduate level, the Doctor of Physiotherapy provides students with a comprehensive, integrated course in the theory and practice of physiotherapy to assess, diagnose and treat disorders of human movement.
The new degree is focused on the future needs of the physiotherapy profession - both locally and internationally - and was developed through extensive consultations with physiotherapists, students and leaders in the public and private health and research sectors.
