This Distance Learning programme has been developed for graduates working or hoping to work in the emergency water and sanitation sector in low- and middle-income countries. It is designed to develop your understanding on the principles and practice of infrastructure provision in emergencies and during reconstruction. It will equip you with the key skills, expertise and knowledge for emergency work in low- and middle-income countries.
Modules are delivered by experts in a broad range of disciplines who have considerable experience of working in low- and middle- income countries. Participants have a mix of nationalities and past experiences, providing opportunities for learning from them and development of a valuable future network.
Externally accredited, WEDC programmes are well-established, and held in high regard by practitioners and employers from both the emergency and development sectors.

Facilities on campus include our laboratory which houses equipment for field sampling and analysis of water and wastewater, and some of the largest hydraulics equipment in the UK. Although Distance Learners will not normally have access to this equipment they can ask the advice of laboratory staff if they are carrying out fieldwork as part of their dissertation.

The programme comprises both compulsory core modules, and optional modules which may be selected. The Case Study module draws together material from across the programme. A research dissertation between 75 and 150 pages long on a chosen topic relevant to interests or career development concludes the programme. Many of the Distance Learning modules have web-based discussion forums, where Distance Learners can choose to interact with each other and Module Tutors.
The method of delivery for the learning materials is mainly portable and paper-based, to suit students who are living or working in areas of the world with poor internet connectivity, or those who travel frequently. We also arrange some webinars which are recorded for students who are unable to participate.
For most modules, students are assessed by two written assessments (three items for core modules). The individual research dissertation module is assessed on the basis of a written dissertation and an oral when a student discusses their submitted dissertation with their supervisor and a second member of staff. For students who cannot visit the UK this oral takes place over Skype.
On occasion we offer specific full-fee and partial-fee scholarships for distance learning applicants.

The M.Sc. in Engineering for Natural Risk Management aims to train professionals capable of working in all sectors of safety and civil protection, both public and private, at national and international level. The student of the M.Sc. in Engineering for Natural Risk Management at the end of his studies will have the following knowledge and understanding capabilities:

This Postgraduate Certificate programme develops students' knowledge and skills, theoretical and practical competencies in the fast-developing world of sedation and pain management, and is studied part-time over one year. Simulation training in management of medical emergencies is an important component of the programme. It is compliant with UK sedation guidelines.
Alongside theoretical training, the programme provides clinical attachments with a programme mentor at accredited sedation clinics in or near London. Students receive training in pre-sedation assessment and how to administer sedation to patients using standard sedation techniques, and observe the criteria set for recovery and discharge of patients after sedation. Students also receive simulation training in the management of medical emergencies during sedation.
Students undertake modules to the value of 60 credits.
The programme consists of four core modules worth 15 credits each.
Each student writes a 3,000-word referenced essay on a sedation-related topic as part of formal assessment. Topics can include research studies, case studies, or any topic related to an interesting area in sedation and pain control.The topic must be approved by the Programme Director.
Teaching and learning
The programme is delivered through lectures, clinical skills seminars, problem-based learning and directly supervised clinical sessions sedating patients. Students also receive simulation training in the management of medical emergencies.

There is a huge demand for sedation practitioners and this is lilkely to grow in future, not only as private practitioners but also sedation trainers.

What is Humanitarian Engineering?
‘Humanitarian Engineering’ is defined as the use of science and engineering to invent, create, design, develop, or improve technologies which promote the well-being of communities which are facing grand humanitarian challenges (fast growing populations, poor, disaster-hit, marginalised, or under-served communities).
The postgraduate course in Humanitarian Engineering is an interdisciplinary innovative educational programme for Humanitarian Engineers which promotes appropriate, sustainable, and holistic solutions to global challenges by integrating science into a broader practical scheme. This unique and cutting-edge programme will enable you to tackle global problems (energy, water, natural disasters, humanitarian logistics, conflict and wars, global health, mixed in with overpopulation, poverty and underinvestment in low-income countries) in an interdisciplinary way and equip them to address causes, consider preventative approaches, and implement suitable responses.
It is a flexible programme that provides students with an academically rigorous postgraduate level interdisciplinary training in the fields of Humanitarian Engineering, spanning from international development to humanitarianism and disaster emergencies. The course develops enterprising, outward-looking graduates who are both equipped to meet society’s newest and pressing challenges, and employers' demands for advanced skills and knowledge, while translating these skills into your chosen arena. Each module will run intensively over one week and will be taught by a variety of methods: seminar, lecture, field research.
The core modules are assessed in a variety of ways: essay, poster, presentation, student-devised assessment.
Graduates of this programme will work across a broad range of areas. Students are expected to come from a broad array of international and professional backgrounds and go on after graduation into a wide variety of professional positions. Many Humanitarian Engineering graduates will work with the governments of developing countries managing the development process (e.g. central banks, ministries of finance, rural development, and education). Others will go on to multilateral development institutions like the World Bank, the IMF, or the United Nations; others to NGO Leaders of all sizes and descriptions; and still others will go on to work in the private sector, in jobs as diverse as professional services, manufacturing, and investment banking, to name just a few. This interdisciplinary programme addresses the convergence of security and development issues, and its implications for analysing the reconstruction of war-affected societies.
The course bridges the themes of conflict, liberal styles of governance and aid policy. You will analyse the ways in which security, development and humanitarian agents adapt to instability. You will also examine the significance of globalisation for the emergence of internal conflict, and for the development of trans-border economics and the political dynamics they may support.
This unique programme gives you the opportunity to study regionally differentiated responses to conflict in, for example Africa and Afghanistan, and to discuss issues relating to humanitarian conditionality, containment and the role of international organisations and NGOs.
Our academics are widely recognised as leading experts in their field. The research-led teaching you will benefit from is directly informed by the cutting-edge research that occurs within the Centre for Global Development, which involves more than 60 academics from across the University, as well as the Leeds University Centre for African Studies (LUCAS), which brings together scholars with an active interest in Africa from across different schools and faculties at the University of Leeds.

The Humanitarian and Conflict Response Institute (HCRI) at The University of Manchester is proud to collaborate with the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) to deliver this world-class,online Postgraduate Diploma in Global Health. Working closely with IFRC we have been able to incorporate their rich source of practical insights into the course content thus providing students with real life case studies from one of the world's largest social movement.
This online course has been developed for people working in the humanitarian sector or for those wishing to enter this field. It enables students to obtain the highest quality postgraduate education whilst maintaining full time employment anywhere in the world. It offer a practical means of study and an inclusive approach which mirrors the reality of interventions within a humanitarian context. All credits earned by students will be transferrable to other academic institutions.
The programme covers issues related to the worldwide improvement of health, the reduction of disparities, and protection against global threats that disregard national borders and is unique in bringing together the study of emergency medicine, disaster management, community health, anthropology and sociology of health and illness in an online format. As such it offers both a practical means of study and an inclusive approach which mirrors the reality of health interventions within a humanitarian context.
Students will have access to leading multi-disciplinary academics and practitioners including Dr Brauman and Professor Tony Redmond OBE (Deputy Director of HCRI) who has led medical teams to sudden onset disasters, complex emergencies, and conflicts for over twenty five years. Tony is also Director of the UK International Emergency Trauma Register which aims to improve training and accountability of those who respond to large scale emergencies overseas.
On completion of the course students should be able to show a critical understanding of:
1. Key issues and debates related to the practices of global health programming. Students will show familiarity with different theoretical approaches, practical problems and an appreciation of the diversity of policies at international and national levels.
2. The range of social science topics which influence global health (including political, historical, anthropological understandings). Students will become familiar with the methodological and normative underpinnings of these disciplines.
3. The analytical and policy literature concerning the related issues of global health, including economics, governance structures and institutions, the role and perspectives of the state, multilateral and bilateral agencies, international and domestic NGOs and other civil institutions.
4. An understanding of local approaches to global health, including an awareness of the problems and critiques associated with `bottom up' approaches.

This course will incorporate these perspectives in a unique on-line curriculum . These online courses have been developed for people working in the humanitarian sector or for those wishing to enter this field. They enable students to obtain the highest quality postgraduate education whilst maintaining full time employment anywhere in the world.
The programme will begin with an on-line induction session that explains how the course will progress and how students can fully engage with the curriculum and the online classroom environment. It will set out the key contacts and what each student can expect. Academic & pastoral support will be offered on-line with each student having a personal tutor who will be responsible for monitoring their progression through the programme. A dedicated programme administrator will be responsible for dealing with day to day enquiries.
The course lasts for 12 months in total with each of the 4 modules comprising 8 weeks of teaching followed by 1 week of assessment. Students will complete each module in turn before progressing to the next. The format is designed to be adaptable to the needs of professional students and provides opportunity for reflection between modules.
The programme has been designed to recreate a classroom learning environment in an online format. Students will be able to engage fully with the programme content, and with their peers, via lectures, discussion boards, group work, online chat, question and answer sessions with the tutor, and through the provision of peer to peer feedback and assessment.
All assessment will take place online. Each of the 4 modules will conclude with a selection of various multiple choice and prose-based assessments. Students will also receive feedback and guidance throughout the programme which will enable them to progress and develop their confidence and analytical skills.
The curriculum will comprise 4 x 15 credit modules as detailed below.
Risk, Vulnerability and Resilience This module will offer an introduction to public and global health, risk assessments and management, epidemiology, population ageing, the determinants of child survival, and pandemics.
Health Systems and Markets This module will look at the social determinants of health, the work of civil society organisations, the interfaces between states and economies, organisational change, health financing, urban health, rural access, food security, agriculture, and eradication programming.
Community Approaches to Health This module will examine issues of psycho-social care, behaviour change, aging, micro-insurance, advocacy, holistic health, HIV, nutrition, breast feeding, hygiene promotion and immunisation.
Ethics, Human Rights and Health This module will consider the role of gender, health inequalities, dignity, legal frameworks, rights based approaches to health, reproductive rights, Millennium development goals 4, 5, and 6, child rights, and accessing illegal drug users and commercial sex workers.
