The AMBA-accredited Hull Executive MBA (EMBA) transforms you into a strategic and responsible leader through our business relevant, internationally recognised programme. Read more

The AMBA-accredited Hull Executive MBA (EMBA) transforms you into a strategic and responsible leader through our business relevant, internationally recognised programme. You will be challenged to think critically to enhance your effectiveness both personally and professionally, developing the skills and understanding required to operate in a complex global business environment.

Teaching is informed by globally recognised research and led by academics with industry experience. Having access to excellent facilities across the University, you and your fellow EMBA students will remain together as a team throughout the programme, learning from each other and enabling you to enlarge your professional network.

With modules taking place in four day blocks (normally Thursday to Sunday), every 6-8 weeks, this allows you to fit your studies around work and other commitments.

The Hull EMBA is also delivered overseas through our partnerships in Bahrain, Hong Kong, Singapore and Romania. Participants at these locations study locally and are taught by our internationally-renowned faculty.

Our AMBA accreditation confirms our quality, and as a Hull EMBA student, you will:

  • take advantage of our relationship with the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) – successful students can be awarded the CMI level seven diploma in strategic management and leadership, enabling you to apply for chartered manager status (on-campus EMBA only)
  • develop a deeper understanding of the complexities of modern organisations through our holistic approach, driven by our expertise in systems thinking
  • forge excellent links with industry through real world consultancy projects
  • gain experience of a broad range of industries and sectors with our diverse cohort
  • transfer new knowledge and skills direct to the workplace

Study information

The Hull EMBA prepares you for senior leadership roles in today's complex world. Designed to develop high-level skills in all the functional aspects of business such as marketing, logistics and human resources, it also develops an awareness of the relationships between them and their contribution to the organisational whole.

This distinctive holistic approach of the Hull EMBA facilitates communication across boundaries – both cultural and organisational - and in so doing enhances personal effectiveness and performance.

You will be challenged to relate your learning to your own experiences and be encouraged to step outside your existing areas of expertise to appreciate the broader context.

Based on both theory and its practical application, the Hull EMBA concentrates on five core themes that are integrated throughout the programme.

  • Connected thinking
  • Modern business organisations require solid accounting, creative marketing and reliable logistics. Customers expect – and organisational success requires – that the various elements will be drawn together to provide an overall product or service.
  • Responsible leadership
  • Throughout the EMBA, you will consider the complex nature of managerial work and will develop and demonstrate leadership competencies within the context of ethics, diversity and executive accountability.
  • Advocacy
  • Management hinges on the art of persuasion. Competence in business is founded on functional forms of business knowledge such as accounting, finance and human resource management – yet managerial success comes from a broader set of skills and attributes requiring the ability to work with others across a variety of contexts.
  • Consensus and difference
  • While acknowledging the aspiration of consensus, the Hull EMBA recognises difference, dissent and conflict, not as distractions but as potentially powerful forces for development and change.
  • Problem identification
  • The Hull EMBA emphasises a focus on problem identification rather than purely the pursuit of solutions, as once a problem is ‘named’ the resolution is more readily established and accepted.

Modules

Teaching takes place in four day blocks (normally Thursday to Sunday) every six-eight weeks. All participants take 12 core modules, studied over two years, organised so that learning in one area deepens understanding in all the others. This focused approach gives you a powerful set of tools for succeeding in today’s complex world.

You will study the following modules:

  • Strategic management
  • Leadership and organisational change
  • Managing in organisations
  • Human resource management
  • International business
  • Economic environment
  • Marketing
  • Supply chain and management operations
  • Accounting and finance for managers
  • Complexity and network thinking
  • Systemic management
  • Consultancy and intervention (on-campus EMBA only)
  • Complex project management (overseas EMBA only)

Followed by a dissertation on a business and management topic of your choice.

* All modules are subject to availability.

The GSB MBA specialising in Executive Management (EMBA) is an authentic and joyful executive learning experience for managers and other professionals with significant work experience who are looking to develop further as leaders and carry through change in their contexts. Read more

The GSB MBA specialising in Executive Management (EMBA) is an authentic and joyful executive learning experience for managers and other professionals with significant work experience who are looking to develop further as leaders and carry through change in their contexts. The programme will develop your presence, conceptual ability, practical wisdom and prudence so that you are able to prioritise in complex situations and deliver effectively. Sign up and allow new possibilities to emerge.

Overview

The business world offers up challenges that involve large sets of variables on consumer behaviour, trends, regulatory uncertainties, shifting competition, and new technologies. In order to illuminate insightful action, you need to develop a lens that helps you focus on the variables that matter. The EMBA uses systems thinking, design thinking and integrative thinking in the transformative learning process that enables students to build new lenses.

Study with the best

The EMBA is an applied learning experience for executives and leaders that will help you to develop in your executive role so that it is more fulfilling and purposeful. Study part-time over two years with some of the best thinkers in the field of management and leadership development at Africa’s top business school and allow new possibilities to emerge.

Move from doing to being

Theory alone cannot explain practice; for that we need to be - and the EMBA fosters a sense of being in management that is powerful. It allows leaders and executives to become more mindfully present and develop practical wisdom and prudence so that they are able to prioritise in complexity and attend to what matters most.

Bring yourself

The EMBA builds a crucial bridge between theory and practice. It will demand that you integrate the raw experience of being in management with progressive theory. You will emerge more comfortable with complexity, better able to manage in paradox, and committed to engaging with the social and economic challenges that 21st century organisations have to navigate.

Go beyond

More than a traditional MBA, the EMBA is targeted at senior, experienced individuals working in executive roles who consciously identify a need to enhance their ability to conceptualise and strategise, rather than focusing on their proficiency in functional management. The programme assumes competence in the fundamentals of business and emphasises process, synthesis, critique and insight leading to the application of new learning relevant for the executive level.

You will study at two UNESCO World Heritage Sites - Durham in the UK and the Upper Middle Rhine region in Germany. Read more

You will study at two UNESCO World Heritage Sites - Durham in the UK and the Upper Middle Rhine region in Germany. As the Durham-EBS Executive EMBA is delivered entirely in English in a classroom setting, you can continue to work full-time whilst studying as most teaching is delivered once each month in three-day blocks (Thursday through to Saturday).

The programme’s strong international focus is also reflected in the core and elective modules, with the International Business in Context elective module delivered at a top business destination. The business and alumni connections you gain will also support you in furthering your career.

This dual award draws on both UK-specific and European experience giving you an insight into leadership in today’s international business world.

Throughout the programme you will explore the operations of global markets, understand how to lead transnational business relations and further build your international network of contacts. You will also be working alongside a diverse group of experienced business professionals and academics from the UK, Germany and around the world.

The Durham-EBS Executive MBA programme commences each September with a seven-day residential stay in Durham, England. During the 18 month programme you will complete:

  1. Nine core modules; seven modules are delivered in Germany and two modules are delivered in Durham
  2. Three elective modules delivered in Germany, Durham or another international location
  3. A Strategic Business Project

Note: Module instruction in Germany is held once a month from Thursday to Saturday. The cost of accommodation and some meals for each one-week residential stay in Durham is included in the programme fee.

Core Modules

The nine core modules of the programme will establish your foundational knowledge, understanding and research skills:

  • Accounting
  • Economics for Global Business
  • Finance
  • Managing People
  • Marketing
  • Operations and Technology
  • Strategic Management
  • Sustainability and Ethics
  • The Boardroom Exercise

Elective Modules

You will then choose the three elective modules most aligned to your personal career aspirations and goals from the following list to complete:

  • Advanced Finance for Business
  • Business Analytics
  • International Business in Context
  • Leading Change
  • Negotiation
  • Project Management
  • Technology and Innovation

Note: Elective module choices may change year on year, depending on current faculty and relevance to business.

Strategic Business Project

Following the completion of your elective modules, you will undertake a research-based Strategic Business Project. You may choose to pursue the project in two ways, either by working with your own company or a host organisation, or through an issue-led investigation which is not focused on a particular organisation but instead examines a specific management issue.

You will receive training in academic writing, as well as qualitative and quantitative business research methods throughout the programme as part of this module.

This is a great opportunity for you to apply your MBA skills and knowledge to address a practical question and help your own or another organisation tackle a current issue or challenge. Whilst undertaking the project you will further develop your research and management skills, building your network and, and in many instances, extending your international experience.

Past projects have been undertaken across a wide variety of organisations, such as multinational corporations in the manufacturing, service and finance sectors, family-owned businesses, the public sector and non-profit organisations.

Two Residential Weeks

Your first residential is a seven-day induction in the UK at the start of your Durham-EBS Executive MBA journey, which will launch you into the programme. It’s a great way to introduce you to the EMBA and enhance your key capabilities including team building, group work, reading and academic writing skills (supporting those who may have been away from academic education for some time).

Not only will you spend time at Durham University Business School and have the chance to explore the city of Durham, you will go on to discover another area in the UK. In previous years this has been the Lake District, a charming region in the Northwest of England.

Your induction will start on a Sunday in Durham, where you will meet your fellow students and members of the EMBA Programme Management Team. You will receive personal introductions, be provided with information to navigate your way through the programme, and learn out about support and administrative services.

On Monday you will familiarise yourself with Durham University and then on Tuesday you will receive academic writing training and attend your first module.

Following the completion of your module you will travel to another UK destination where you will engage in a variety of indoor and outdoor team-building experiences and develop various additional personal and team skills. This is a particularly memorable aspect of the EMBA and the relationships built here will last throughout the programme and beyond.

Your second residential week will take place the following year, probably in September. During this week you will complete another core module in Durham, UK, and experience further indoor and outdoor skills enhancement and team-building activities.

Careers, coaching and student support

You can choose to be mentored by a certified coach at EBS as you consider your life and career choices, and select the coach based on common interest.

Career services support is available from EBS, and you can access the online careers platform provided by Durham University Business School which will provide you with supplementary skills to supporting you in advancing your career.

The Programme Director will keep in regular contact with you as well as tutors and programme teams at both sites.

How it works

Where do you want to call home?

EMBA students can choose from three home campuses – London, Dubai, and Boston. Your home campus is where you complete the core courses and leadership program. You can choose to stay at your home campus for the entire length of your program if you prefer not to rotate.

Where do you want to rotate to first?

During the summer, you have the option of taking electives at any of Hult’s home campuses, or our rotation centers in San Francisco and New York. You can choose to stay at the same campus for the next module if you prefer to only rotate once.

Where do you want to rotate to next?

If you want to experience even more of Hult's global campus locations, you can choose to take your two final electives at any of Hult’s five campuses worldwide. That includes all three of our home campuses, and our rotation centers in San Francisco and New York.

We seek candidates with experience of at least 10 years of which 3 to 5 years of solid management experience (i.e., managing people and/or projects). More important than your tenure, is your professional achievements and performance when assessing your application.

We welcome applications from:

  • Senior executives who either lead their companies or are about to assume leadership of their companies.
  • Senior functional leaders who are transitioning into general management responsibilities.
  • Leaders of fast-growth family businesses.

How EMBA differs

Strategic perspective: The ALBA Executive MBA Program has a modular structure that evolves around five Strategy themes: Big Picture Challenges, Business Fundamentals, Development of Personal and Organization Capabilities and, finally, Renewing the Business.

Unparalleled depth in Leadership and Innovation: While leadership courses are mushrooming, the unique feature of our EMBA is a program-long combination of coaching, 360-degree assessments and team activities, aimed to help you foster your own authentic leadership approach. At the same time, our EMBA features an unusually holistic innovation view which spans technology-based, marketing-driven, process-based, and business model innovation.

Efficient and convenient: Our modular format runs in 36 weekends, twice a month over 20 months (with long breaks). Modules feature a variety of teaching methods including interactive, case-based discussions, cutting-edge academic knowledge, and in-class exercises. Actionable learning takes off with take-home assignments (and not exams) to help you embed the new knowledge in your business.

ALBA’s seal of quality: With our undisputed track record in executive education, you will experience ALBA’s senior faculty’s stellar class performance and top-notch expertise. Having won the respect of academia abroad, we are also able to attract top business thinkers from leading schools such as Wharton, Harvard, LBS, INSEAD, IMD, SDA Bocconi, Duke, Darden etc., with a goal to spark your intellect and ignite your curiosity.

Harness a network of accomplished peers: Our professors are not the only source of learning. You learn from the experience of peers who have work experience of at least 10 years of which 3 to 5 years of solid management experience (i.e., managing people and/or projects) and share a passion to grow and potential to succeed.

Why EMBA

Tap our thought leadership.

The pursuit of world-class research defines ALBA's institutional blueprint. The current  faculty team has produced several books and book chapters, thousands of academic conference presentations, and hundreds of journal articles, which help us generate new ideas and tools for use in the classroom. But it is not just quantity, however. We take pride that 34% of our research output appears in the World Elite and Top journals according to the Association of Business Schools (ABS), a record no other academic institution in Greece and, in fact, very few in Europe can match.

Harness our entrepreneurial pedigree.

ALBA is the #1 business school in Europe in terms of entrepreneurship based on the awards received in the prestigious EBPYC (European Business Plan of the Year Competition).

Experience real time value

Revitalize your intellect in the weekend and return empowered in the office on Monday. With their executive education expertise in Greece and abroad, our senior faculty create a challenging learning environment in the classroom. In fact, at ALBA we take pride that we do not focus on teaching but on learning: provoking debates, collaborating in teams, and generating solutions to real problems. Our visiting faculty from top US and EU business schools will ignite your curiosity and demystify the latest management thinking and tools.

Enjoy Flexibility and premium service.

You run a tight schedule and we run a rigorous program. To meet both ends, our program is delivered in weekends twice a month with long breaks around Christmas and summer holidays. Moreover, a dedicated staff member will help you navigate the program logistics. We also offer free textbook delivery to your home or office, catered meals and snacks every class day, and mentoring by our senior faculty.

Look back and exclaim: “Those were the best days of my life!”

… our alumni say for over 20 years and as a matter of fact they‘ve got to be right!

Since its founding, ALBA strives to foster a stimulating academic environment sustained by teamwork, intellectual curiosity and close ties among faculty, students, staff and alumni relations. In this intimate environment, we create a tightly -knit community of engaged, enthusiastic and energetic students who seek to transform their lives and their organizations. It is exactly this Business Unusual spirit that has inspired more than 3000 alumni who look back at their time at ALBA with incessant affection and unwaning dedication.
