The Sensors Electronic Warfare PgCert has been designed for officers of the Armed Forces and for scientists and technical officers in government defence establishments and the defence industry.

The programme covers a selection of Electronic Warfare (EW) topics relevant to military systems, covering the specification, analysis, development, procurement, and technical management of military radar, electro-optics and infrared sensor systems.

This course provides education and training in selected military electronic systems. The course is intended for officers of the armed forces and for scientists and technical officers in government defence establishments and the defence industry. It is particularly suitable for those who, in their subsequent careers, will be involved with the specification, analysis, development, technical management or operation of military radar, electro-optics, communications, sonar or information systems, where the emphasis will be on an Electronic Warfare environment.

Students taking the Postgraduate Certificate (PgCert) course variant are able to choose to study, and will be awarded, either the Communications Electronic Warfare PgCert or Sensors Electronic Warfare PgCert.

Overview

A Military Electronic Systems Engineering graduate achieves a high level of understanding and detailed knowledge of military communications and sensor systems with particular regard to electronic warfare. In addition, the MSc course enables the student to carry out an in-depth investigation into an area of electronic warfare to further enhance their analytical capability. Successful graduates of this course should be fully equipped for roles in defence intelligence, systems development and acquisition, involving the specification and analysis of such systems, working individually or as part of a team.

A typical course cohort comprises 10-15 full time students and up to 4 part time.

The Guided Weapon Systems MSc is a flagship Cranfield course and has an outstanding reputation within the Guided Weapons community. The course meets the requirements of all three UK armed services and is also open to students from NATO countries, Commonwealth forces, selected non-NATO countries, the scientific civil service and industry. The course structure is modular in nature with each module conducted at a postgraduate level; the interactions between modules are emphasised throughout. A comprehensive suite of visits to industrial and services establishments consolidates the learning process, ensuring the taught subject matter is directly relevant and current.

Overview

This course is an essential pre-requisite for many specific weapons postings in the UK and overseas forces. It also offers an ideal opportunity for anyone working in the Guided Weapons industry to get a comprehensive overall understanding of all the main elements of guided weapons systems.

It typically attracts 12 students per year, mainly from UK, Canadian, Australian, Chilean, Brazilian and other European forces.

English Language Requirements

If you are an international student you will need to provide evidence that you have achieved a satisfactory test result in an English qualification. The minimum standard expected from a number of accepted courses are as follows:

This varies from module to module but comprises a mixture of oral examinations, written examinations, informal tests, assignments, syndicate presentations and an individual thesis.

Career opportunities

Successful students will have a detailed understanding of Guided Weapons system design and will be highly suited to any role or position with a requirement for specific knowledge of such systems. Many students go on to positions within the services which have specific needs for such skills.

Our MA War in the Modern World provides an advanced and comprehensive understanding of the historical evolution of warfare and international security since the end of the Second World War. You will examine contemporary warfare and security issues in the light of the wide-ranging political, technological, economic and social changes in the world between 1945 and today. It will equip you to engage critically with scholarly debate about the conduct and nature of contemporary warfare, and to understand the contexts in which modern conflicts take place.

MA Air Power in the Modern World is a flexible, modular master's programme, rich in media and reading resources, delivered entirely online viaKing's College London Virtual Learning Environment. You will interact with an engaging and lively community of fellow graduates, from a wide variety of backgrounds.

It will equip you to engage critically with scholarly debate about the conduct and nature of contemporary warfare from an air power perspective, and to understand the contexts in which modern military operations take place.

- Study -

Modules are divided into five units, each studied for two weeks. Within each unit, students read online authored content and follow links to extensive readings and other resources. Selected students then post a draft response to the unit Short Essay question, and this draft forms the basis of a lively and intensive asynchronous (message-board style) online discussion within the tutor group, continuously moderated by the tutor. At the end of this discussion, the selected students revise their Short Essays for submission.

All students also complete an individual Long Essay for each module, due after all units are complete.

After studying the required number of modules, you complete an individual dissertation, which forms the final element of your degree programme.

- Delivery and duration -

The entire MA Air Power in the Modern World programme is delivered online, via the King's College London Virtual Learning Environment (KEATS); there is no requirement for students to attend King's or even to be resident in the UK.

The programme timetable is based on three semesters per academic year (September-December, January-March and April-June), with students normally completing one taught module per term. Students usually take two years to complete the required taught modules, followed by an additional six months to complete the 15,000-word dissertation. It may be possible for you to complete the programme in a shorter time if circumstances and teaching arrangements allow.

You will need to allow 10-15 hours work per week for each 11-week semester to complete the taught modules.

If you wish to expand your knowledge of the history of Ancient Greek and Roman societies at a postgraduate level, then the MA in Ancient History is for you. The Ancient History scheme allows you to study a wide range of modules covering not only fascinating figures like Alexander the Great and Julius Caesar, but also basic aspects of everyday life, such as warfare and the economy.

The MA Ancient History offers students whose interests centre on the study of ancient history the opportunity to take a specialist higher degree tailored to those interests. Students will take a balance of modules in both Greek and Roman history, and may focus on one or other of the two societies in their dissertation module. The Greek modules cover the archaic, classical and Hellenistic periods while there are three primary foci for the study of Roman history: the Republican period; the Imperial Roman West; and, the Roman East, including Egypt and India.

An MA degree in Ancient History involves a wide range of assessment methods. In addition to traditional essays, you will be assessed through bibliographic exercises, presentations – oral and PowerPoint based, creation of abstracts, in-house conference papers, article reviews, creation of project plans and, of course, the dissertation. This variety of assessment helps develop skills in presenting material in clear, professional and a lucid manner, whether orally or in writing.

The assessment is on the student’s own subject of choice in relation to each module, always in consultation with the relevant tutor. Most modules are assessed by long essays, but some modules are assessed by alternative means, such as conference-style presentations.
