There may also be studies related to the language and culture of the host region. On your return you’ll complete your dissertation or consultancy project.

One of the key challenges facing any student planning to undertake a business-related degree is how to compete in the job market with business graduates around the world who are also trying to ignite their business career. We know from experience and talking to employers that international awareness is a key differentiator. Many of our students have already taken the first step by travelling hundreds or thousands of miles to study in an unfamiliar environment. However the international exchange option takes that to the next level. If you decide on a master’s consultancy project, rather than a dissertation, you’ll still undertake primary and desk research. Through your reading, reflection and research, you’ll be expected to show a deep understanding of the issues that are involved in the client brief.

It is also your chance to focus in on financial management and perfect if you are looking to develop your understanding of a fundamental aspect in all businesses.

The programme is designed around a set of modules that are common to all ‘Business with’ pathways. These modules cover general business functions, strategic management and organisational analysis and will develop your strategic awareness, leadership potential and understanding of international business.

In the second semester you will be given the opportunity to specialise in Financial Management.

Following your second semester, you will undertake the Advanced Practice element of this programme which consists of either an internship or an applied group consultancy project where you will work with a real organisation on a live business problem. You will benefit from valuable work experience and developing key business insights.

For those completing an internship, in the remainder of the programme you will complete your research and writing up of your dissertation. Every student has a personal research supervisor and will be required to submit an assessed research proposal prior to embarking on the dissertation itself. For those not undertaking an internship, you will complete your consultancy project.

Advanced Practice stage

This stage of your programme offers you the opportunity to secure a 12-15 week internship, or complete a group consultancy project, giving you experience of the workplace environment or live business issues, both an excellent way to put your learning in to practice.

The full duration of your programme depends on your start date:

Consultancy project

The alternative consultancy module allows you to work in teams with a business organisation, working on a consultancy-based projects for real business scenarios.

Teaching And Assessment

Your tutors will use a variety of teaching methods including lectures, seminars and workshops. As this is a master’s course there is a major element of independent learning and self-motivated reflection.

Teaching is backed up by a well-designed support system that helps ensure a successful learning journey. We make sure that extensive feedback, from both tutors and peers, is built into the course.

Our assessment strategy is based on our understanding that everyone has different needs, strengths and enthusiasms. Assessment is based on course work and our methods will include essays, reports, group work, presentations, and the master’s dissertation or consultancy project.

Learning Environment

Newcastle Business School provides first-class teaching in a world-class environment. From social spaces and hub areas to lecture theatres and exhibition spaces, our facilities are exceptional. The University has also invested heavily in IT labs and facilities. You’ll use software such as ARIS Express Business Process Modelling, various SAS applications, Microsoft Project, specialist decision-making software, and Google Analytics.

Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) is embedded throughout the course with tools such as the ‘Blackboard’ eLearning Portal and electronic reading lists that will guide your preparation for seminars and independent research. Our use of lecture capture software will help you revise challenging material.

There will be plenty of opportunities to put your learning into practice. The Student Engagement Centre promotes all types of experiential learning including volunteering, internships and placements. The Business Clinic enables our students to participate in a ‘consultancy firm’ to provide advice for our region’s businesses.

Research-Rich Learning

As a master’s student you’ll develop your research skills to a new and higher level. Your research supervisor will help you submit a proposal for your master’s dissertation or consultancy project and then discuss its development through to completion in the final semester.

If you decide on a master’s consultancy project, rather than a dissertation, you’ll still undertake primary and desk research. Through your reading, reflection and research, you’ll be expected to show a deep understanding of the issues that are involved in the client brief.

Throughout your course you’ll be an active participant in the on-going research agenda that’s at the heart of Newcastle Business School. With conferences and research events regularly taking place, and with staff discussing their own research as it relates to the topics you’ll study, there’s a strong emphasis on engaging in up-to-date enquiry-based learning.

Give Your Career An Edge

The course includes two modules that are focused on developing global management competencies. Topics during these modules include emotional intelligence, cultural awareness and the ability to work in diverse groups and teams, as well as project management and decision making.

A further module, ‘Academic and Professional Development’, has a specific focus on self-development. It includes formal sessions with our Careers and Employment Service which offers a range of workshops, one-to-one advice, and networking opportunities.

The course will give you a practical insight into setting up and running a small business. It will be possible to channel your learning into your own business during and/or after graduation.

We offer the opportunity to undertake a master’s consultancy project as an alternative to the traditional dissertation. You’ll work in a small group and tackle a live project under the mentorship of a member of our academic team.

Your Future

By the end of this course you’ll be in an excellent position to apply for graduate training schemes and graduate roles or to start your own business. Employers value entrepreneurial skills and are keen to hire graduates with entrepreneurial acumen, particularly for roles in consultancy, sales and marketing.

EDUCATIONAL AIMS OF THE PROGRAMME

The taught postgraduate degree programmes of the Department are intended both to assist with professional career development within the relevant industry and, for a small number of students, to serve as a precursor to academic research.

Our philosophy is to integrate the acquisition of core engineering and scientific knowledge with the development of key practical skills (where relevant). To fulfil these objectives, the programme aims to:
-Attract well-qualified entrants, with a background in electronic engineering, physical sciences, mathematics, computing and communications, from the UK, Europe and overseas
-Provide participants with advanced knowledge, practical skills and understanding applicable to the MSc degree
-Develop participants' understanding of the underlying science, engineering, and technology, and enhance their ability to relate this to industrial practice
-Develop participants' critical and analytical powers so that they can effectively plan and execute individual research/design/development projects
-Provide a high level of flexibility in programme pattern and exit point
-Provide students with an extensive choice of taught modules, in subjects for which the Department has an international and UK research reputation

A graduate from this MSc programme should:
-Know, understand and be able to apply the fundamental mathematical, scientific and engineering facts and principles that underpin electronic engineering
