Mission & Goals

Electrical Engineering is the branch of engineering that deals with the study and application of electricity, electronics and engineering electromagnetics, with particular focus on electric power systems, electrical machines and their control, electronic power converters, electrical transportation systems, electrical and electronic measurements, circuit theory and electromagnetic compatibility.
An electrical engineer has a wide background of knowledge that is necessary to address ever increasing challenges of the professional and research activities. These activities span not only in the traditional field of electricity generation, transmission and distribution, but also in the multi-faceted reality of industrial and home electrical appliances and systems, the electric systems in the transportation and health-care sectors, the electromagnetic compatibility, and the measurement and diagnosis techniques, just to mention some of the most relevant possible fields of activity.
A wide and in-depth knowledge of mathematics and physics is the essential background of graduates’ qualification in electrical engineering. Fundamental is also the background in computer science, automation and electronics applied to the different areas of electrical engineering.

Career Opportunities

There is a steady high demand for electrical engineers: in 2010, the Master of Science graduated of that year were 60, whilst the Politecnico di Milano’s Career Service received 546 requests for employment of electrical engineers. According to the Technical Report of the Evaluation Committee of Politecnico di Milano, 88% of the Master of Science graduated in Electrical Engineer in 2007, interviewed in December 2008, declared that they would have applied again to the same Electrical Engineering Programme and the 90% of the interviewed graduated declared to have a stable, full-time employment.

This track of the Master of Science in Electrical Engineering aims to form graduates with a comprehensive scientific and technological background on electrical power systems. It builds on basic disciplines (covering digital signal processing, electromagnetic compatibility and engineering electromagnetics, measurements and diagnosis techniques, power electronics and electrical drives, design of electrical machines and apparatus, etc.) and provides solid skills in the areas of electrical energy and renewable sources, electrical systems in transportation, design and automation of electrical systems. Graduates will be highly employable in the sectors of generation, transmission, distribution and utilization of electrical energy; manufacturing of electrical machines and power electronics equipment; industrial automation; design, production and operation of electrical systems for transportation (rail, automotive, aerospace and marine); companies operating on the electricity market.

Students on the Electronic and Electrical Engineering course benefit from the use of industry-standard equipment, such as a scanning tunnelling microscope for atomic scale probing or an hp4124 parameter analyzer for power devices, for simulation, implementation and communication.

The MSc in Electronic and Electrical Engineering programme is modular in structure. Students must obtain a total of 180 credits to qualify for the degree. The taught postgraduate degree programmes of the Department are intended both to assist with professional career development within the relevant industry and, for a small number of students, to serve as a precursor to academic research.

Our philosophy is to integrate the acquisition of core engineering and scientific knowledge with the development of key practical skills (where relevant). To fulfil these objectives, the programme aims to:

This course addresses currently emerging needs of new skills for architects, engineering and construction and built environment professionals: efficient multidisciplinary collaboration through the design and construction processes, enabling the delivery of integrated design and solutions with the support of advanced technologies such as Building Information Modelling (BIM).

The construction industry is facing unprecedented change around BIM, Lean and sustainability. Organisational forms, contracts, and many other different aspects of construction are changing. This course focuses strategically on these changing processes. It supports professionals in responding to current and future challenges in client expectations and societal needs, which are pushing professionals to improve integration and coordination of formerly separate roles and responsibilities.

This course is based on state-of-the-art research developed within the internationally leading School of the Built Environment. The course also incorporates the latest practice based developments through guest lectures from leading practitioners.

It addresses the benefits that can be achieved through the adoption of BIM and discusses:

Format

On campus study is delivered by a variety of learning and teaching methods. Lectures introduce new material and provide the core knowledge base for each module. Design project work is an important aspect of the course enabling you to initiate and control research and design techniques to develop solutions to prescribed tasks.

Distance Learning uses an internet-based learning environment backed up by intensive tutor support. Weekly online tutorials are led by tutors with student interaction. Our online repository of learning material enables you to undertake self-directed study at your own convenience. Learning is driven by real-world problems aligned to your workplace and job role.

Additional learning support will be provided through optional study days for both on-campus and distance learning students along with a summer school which will include seminars, group working, presentations and guest speakers from industry.

PROGRAMME OVERVIEW

Our MSc Euromasters programme is designed for electronic engineering students and professionals with an interest in gaining further qualifications in advanced, cutting-edge techniques and technologies in the selected pathway, with enhanced project, as well as training in transferable skills including business awareness and management.

We offer numerous Electronic Engineering MScs in more specialised fields of study, from space engineering to mobile communications systems, and if you wish to specialise in one of these pathways you can adjust your course accordingly.

This programme is studied part-time over 48 months. It consists of eight taught modules and a standard project. There are two semesters of taught material and a summer session working on a project or dissertation. September entry students start with management courses and January entry students with engineering courses.

The aim of this module is for the student to understand the impact that climate, people, equipment selection and design have on energy consumption on a range of building sizes from domestic to large commercial.

The aims of this module are for the student to be introduced to the process within which buildings are conceived and designed by undertaking the architecture design of a major building using multi-disciplinary input. Students will develop team skills through working in design groups to generate schematic concepts before developing the best. Facilities

All masters students have access to a wide range of building simulation codes which include commercial software, as well as bespoke codes developed in-house. Students can run these codes on their personal laptops or access any one of our computer laboratories, including access to our recently commissioned 2000-node high performance computer cluster.

One of our key strengths at Loughborough is our experimental facilities which enable us to validate computer models. Our masters students have access to a vast range of experimental facilities, some of which are used during the taught modules and all of which are available for use by students during their research dissertations.

These include: a fully controllable environmental chamber; sophisticated thermal and breathing manikins; an indoor solar simulator; a 'darkroom' facility to carry out optical and high dynamic range measurements; and full-scale houses for pressure testing and studying innovative heating and control strategies. A recent investment of £360k was made to purchase an extensive array of monitoring and measuring equipment for use during field studies.

How you will learn

You will learn through a carefully balanced combination of lectures, in-class guided workshops, hands-on computer modelling, field measurements and independent research. Students have access to a wide range of air flow, thermal and daylight modelling software as well as extensive laboratory facilities. Following nine taught modules, students pursue a research dissertation of their choice which draws on the skills developed during the taught modules.

Students are assessed by a combination of traditional written exams, coursework and assignments. This split is typically 70/30 (exam/coursework) or 50/50, although some modules, such as research methods and concept design are assessed entirely based on coursework which comprises individual presentations and group work.

Careers and further study

Previous students have gone on to work for leading consulting engineering companies such as Arup, Pick Everad, Hoare Lea, Hulley and Kirkwood and SE Controls. Some of these companies offer work placements for students to undertake their research dissertations. Many visit the university to deliver lectures to our MSc students providing ideal opportunities for students to discuss employment opportunities.

Accreditation

The programme is accredited for further learning for CEng and professional membership by the CIBSE and Energy Institute.

Overview

Electrical power is an essential infrastructure of our society. Adequate and uninterrupted supply of electrical power of the required quality is essential for industries, commercial establishments and residences; and almost any type of human activity is impossible without the use of electricity. The ever-increasing cost of fuels required for power generation, restricted availability in many parts of the world, demand for electricity fueled by industrial growth and shortage of skilled engineers to design, operate and maintain power network components are problems felt everywhere today. The Master of Engineering (Electrical Systems) is designed to address the last-mentioned constraint, especially in today’s context where the field of electrical power is not perceived as being ‘cool’ unlike computers and communications and other similar nascent fields experiencing explosive growth. But it is often forgotten that even a highly complex and sophisticated data centre needs huge amounts of power of extremely high reliability, without which it is just so much silicon (and copper).

This program presents the topics at two levels. The first year addresses the design level where the student learns how to design the components of a power system such as generation, transmission and distribution as well as the other systems contributing to the safety of operation. The topics in the first year also cover the automation and control components that contribute to the high level of reliability expected from today’s power systems. Because of the constraints imposed by the fuel for power generation and the environmental degradation that accompanies power generation by fossil fuels, the attention today is focused on renewable energy sources and also more importantly how to make the generation of power more efficient and less polluting so that you get a double benefit of lower fuel usage and lower environmental impact. Even the best designed systems need to be put together efficiently. Setting up power generation and transmission facilities involves appreciable capital input and complex techniques for planning, installation and commissioning. Keeping this in view, a unit covering project management is included in the first year.

The second year of the program focuses on the highly complex theory of power systems. If the power system has to perform with a high degree of reliability and tide over various disturbances that invariably occur due to abnormal events in the power system, it is necessary to use simulation techniques that can accurately model a power system and predict its behavior under various possible disturbance conditions. These aspects are covered in the course units dealing with power system analysis and stability studies for steady-state, dynamic and transient conditions. The aspect of power quality and harmonic flow studies is also included as a separate unit.

The study of power systems has an extensive scope and besides the topics listed above, a student may also like to cover some other related topic of special interest. The ‘Special Topics in Electrical Power Systems’ unit aims to provide students with the opportunity for adding one ‘state-of-the art’ topic from a list of suggested fields. Examples are: Smart grids, Micro-grids and Geographic Information System (GIS) application in utility environment.

The Masters Thesis which spans over two complete semesters is the capstone of the program, requiring a high level of personal autonomy and accountability, and reinforces the knowledge and skill base developed in the preceding units. As a significant research component of the course, this program component will facilitate research, critical evaluation and the application of knowledge and skills with creativity and initiative, enabling the students to critique current professional practice in the electrical power industry.

The ATI is a £10 million investment in advanced research and is the flagship institute of the University of Surrey in the area of nanotechnology and nanomaterials. The ATI brings together under one roof the major research activities of the University from the Department of Electronic Engineering and the Department of Physics in the area of nanotechnology and electronic devices.

EDUCATIONAL AIMS OF THE PROGRAMME

The taught postgraduate Degree Programmes of the Department are intended both to assist with professional career development within the relevant industry and, for a small number of students, to serve as a precursor to academic research.

Our philosophy is to integrate the acquisition of core engineering and scientific knowledge with the development of key practical skills (where relevant).

To fulfil these objectives, the programme aims to:
-Attract well-qualified entrants, with a background in Electronic Engineering, Physical Sciences, Mathematics, Computing and Communications, from the UK, Europe and overseas
-Provide participants with advanced knowledge, practical skills and understanding applicable to the MSc degree
-Develop participants' understanding of the underlying science, engineering, and technology, and enhance their ability to relate this to industrial practice
-Develop participants' critical and analytical powers so that they can effectively plan and execute individual research/design/development projects
-Provide a high level of flexibility in programme pattern and exit point
-Provide students with an extensive choice of taught modules, in subjects for which the Department has an international and UK research reputation

This course delivers a broad coverage of all major disciplines in Electrical Power, including power electronics, electric drives, electrical machine design and power systems. It also covers important electrical power themes such as renewable energy systems and electric vehicles.

The Electrical Power MSc covers the following key subject areas:

A feature of the course is design of electrical systems for transportation and renewable energy applications. This is a particular specialisation of researchers in the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering.

You will develop a knowledge of industry standard computer aided design and analysis techniques appropriate to electrical power such as the use of software packages such as MagNet, MATLAB, Simulink, PSpice and ERACS.

Throughout the course you use industry standard test and measurement equipment, experimental hardware, and software packages relevant to the field of electrical and power engineering.

The course comprises a mixture of lectures, tutorials, coursework and practical laboratory classes. You will research a specialist topic of your choice through an in-depth project. Innovative educational techniques are designed to equip you with practical design skills and research methodologies.

As a graduate of this course you are equipped with the knowledge and practical experience to embark on a career as an engineer in the field of Electrical Power. You will also have skills in research and knowledge acquisition and a solid foundation for further postgraduate studies in the field of electrical engineering and power engineering.

Delivery

You take modules to a total value of 180 credits over three semesters. Taught modules, worth 120 credits, take place during the first and second semesters with exams held in January and May/June. An individual project, worth 60 credits, is undertaken over semesters two and three.

Background reading and design work take place during the second semester. The majority of experimental work and preparation of your dissertation takes place during the semester three.

Teaching takes place in lecture theatres equipped with audio visual equipment. Blackboard, a web based Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) supports your taught modules. Practical sessions are in small groups with experts in the field of Power Electronics, Electric Drives, Machines, and Power Systems and in modern laboratory and computing facilities.

Employability

We collect information from our graduates six months after they leave University. This is part of the Destination of Leavers from Higher Education (DLHE) survey that every UK higher education institution takes part in.

Accreditation

The course is accredited by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) and Engineering Council, and therefore provides a good foundation for professional registration.

The new 2-year MSc Electrical Power Systems with Advanced Research will give you the timely advanced skills and specialist experience required to significantly enhance your career in the electrical power industry. The programme builds on a very close involvement with the power industry, the education of power engineers and extensive research work and expertise as well as the successful experience on the 1-year MSc Electrical Power Systems at the University of Birmingham. The 2-year MSc Electrical Power Systems with Advanced Research will be able to fill in the gap of skills between the 1-year MSc and PhD research.

Some modules will be taught by leading industry experts, which will give you the exciting opportunity to understand the real challenges that power industry is facing, hence propose innovative solutions. In addition, students working on relevant MSc projects may have the opportunity to work with leading industry experts directly.

The new 2-Year MSc Electrical Power Systems with Advanced Research will run in parallel with the existing 1-Year MSc Electrical Power Systems. The taught credits in the 1st year of the 2 Year MSc are identical to that of the 1-Year MSc while the 2nd Year is mainly focused on a research project.

This programme also aims to provide graduates with the ability to critically evaluate methodologies, analytical procedures and advanced research methods. Year 1 of the programme is focussed on the taught modules covering:

Control concepts and methods
Advanced energy conversion systems and power electronic applications
Advanced power electronic technologies for electrical power networks – HVDC and FACTS
Electrical power system engineering - using state-of-the-art computational tools and methods, and design of sustainable electrical power systems and networks
Economic analysis of electrical power systems and electricity markets.
While Year 2 of the programme will give you the opportunity to work on an advanced research project. For some suitable projects, in conjunction with joint industry supervisions, industry placement may be available.

It is envisaged there will be the opportunity for students to transfer between the two programmes using the University’s procedures for transfers between programmes, subject to programme requirements. This opportunity would take place at the end of the taught part of the programme.
