The MEd in Education Studies allows you to tailor your studies from a range of elective specialist classes. This course is ideal for those who want to study part-time alongside working. The classes are delivered either face-to-face on campus during the evening or at weekends or through the Virtual Learning Platform.
The MEd in Education Studies provides a critical understanding of education. It is not a teaching qualification, yet, a Masters level study of education can enhance students’ academic and professional understanding of education in ways that can enhance practice and career opportunities in the broader field of education.
The course enables you to develop skills to study at Masters level, develop a sophisticated and critical understanding of the concept of policy relating to education, extend your interest and understanding of learning and engage in a range of other, education-related areas.
Our MEd programmes are part-time over three years. Students are expected to attain 60 credits per year resulting in 180 credits.
Students undertake three classes each worth 20 credits. Normally this will be one class per semester. For on-campus classes, this will involve attending three hours per week, delivered either in the evening or on Saturday morning. In total each class should take 200 hours including self-study.
For Virtual Learning Environment classes, this will involve participating in weekly online seminars delivered via My Place. The seminars are scheduled in the evening to accommodate working professionals.
Students who decide to complete their studies after one year will graduate with a Postgraduate Certificate.
Students undertake three classes each worth 20 credits. This will usually consist of two optional classes and a compulsory class, Research Methods & Reasoning. The compulsory class equips students with the necessary basis for undertaking a dissertation at Masters level.
Research Methods & Reasoning is delivered entirely online via My Place during semester one.
As per year one, students will normally undertake one class per semester. The expected study time is the same as in year one.
Students who decide to complete their studies at the end of year two will graduate with a Postgraduate Diploma.
You’ll carry out a research dissertation in a subject area of your choice worth 60 credits. We'll allocate a supervisor for one-to-one support whilst you carry out and report your dissertation. We aim to match you with the best fit for your specialist area.
You can complete your final dissertation by distance learning. This provides our students with the flexibility to complete their studies around work commitments.
The course is taught through a range of student and staff-led research seminars that you’ll participate in.
For our Virtual Learning Environment delivery the student group will participate in online seminars.

This programme offers an intellectually rigorous analysis of educational processes, systems and approaches, and their cultural, societal, political, historical and economic contexts. Postgraduates are able to participate in, and contest, changing discourses exemplified by reference to debate about values, personal and social engagement and how these relate to communities and societies.
Students have opportunities to develop their critical capabilities through the selection, analysis and synthesis of relevant perspectives, and to be able to justify different positions on educational matters. The full time MA Education Studies is normally timetabled for teaching on two days a week (currently Tuesdays and Thursdays), with additional independent, guided study requirements.

Our MA Education Studies is part of the Postgraduate Research in Education, Community and Society programme. We also have a large number of student-professionals studying on our part time Postgraduate Professional Development Programme.
This means, you will join a lively and forward-thinking postgraduate taught community in the Faculty of Education of over a thousand full and part-time taught postgraduate students. We run some wider events for all our postgraduate taught students, such as the Methodology Fair, where there are multiple opportunities to network, and that provide enhanced opportunities for learning at postgraduate level.
You will be assessed through a variety of coursework driven modules. There are no formal examinations for this course. Taught sessions are mainly conducted during weekdays. In addition to the taught sessions, you are expected to work independently.

The Master’s programme Clinical Child, Family and Education Studies (Dutch:Orthopedagogiek) challenges you to make connections between scientific research and practical issues. It addresses what is needed when problems arise in child and adolescent development, or in parenting or education of children at risk.
This Master’s programme will enable you to develop yourself as an academic and clinical professional. Armed with scientific insights and clinical skills, you will be able to give advice, support, treatment and guidance concerning clinical issues in raising children and adolescents. You can make an important contribution to research of practical care issues related to children and youth. You will help children, youth, their parents and the systems surrounding them to function to their optimum potential. This programme prepares you to work as a scientist practitioner in youth care in clinical or transnational settings.
While studying complex situations you will combine insights from education and child and adolescent studies, psychology, neuropsychology, child and youth psychiatry, forensic psychiatry, juvenile justice, pediatrics and sociology.
This programme’s working language is English. This means that English will be used during lectures, for scientific exchange between students and staff. You may opt to use Dutch or English for your thesis and individual assignments. Certain parts of the programme, such as a clinical internship in an institution with Dutch speaking clients or patients, are only available to students who speak Dutch.

The Master’s programme in Clinical Child, Family and Education Studies prepares you for work from a transnational perspective, or for a career in a clinical setting. You will be able to give advice, support, treatment and guidance when problems in child and adolescent development arise. You will be a trained expert in clinical issues in raising future generations. You could work as a policy adviser or care giver in several fields such as youth care, special needs care in schools, care for people with a disability, paediatric rehabilitation, forensic care and (inter)national knowledge institutions. You can also pursue a career in research, for instance at a university or knowledge institution.
The MA Higher and Professional Education will give students critical insights into the changing field of higher education; reflecting on contemporary developments and debates. It will introduce conceptual and analytical frameworks for understanding the role of higher education in society. It will develop student’s knowledge, skills and confidence to operate effectively and creatively in a diverse higher education sector.
This programme provides students with the opportunity to study for an interdisciplinary, interprofessional qualification, examining higher and professional education policies and practices in relation to their own personal and professional experience.
Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits.
The programme consists of two core modules (60 credits), two optional modules (60 credits), and either a) a dissertation (60 credits), or b) a report (30 credits) plus a further optional module (30 credits).
The two core modules must both be completed in order to gain the named award.
In 2017/18 both core modules were timtabled 5-8pm to enable students working in higher education to attend with ICHE running in the Autumn Term and HE: CiP running in the Spring Term.
Recommended optional modules appear below, but optional modules can be selected from the wide range offered by various taught Masters programmes at the Institute of Education.
The module Learning and Teaching for Adults has the additional requirement of experience of teaching.
All students undertake an independent research project which culminates in a 20,000-word dissertation or 10,000-word report.
Teaching and learning
Teaching is delivered through interactive lectures, seminars, group discussions, case study analysis and online learning. In many modules there are opportunities for all students to participate on a variety of ways, including giving short presentations or seminar papers or leading group discussions.
Assessment is through coursework assignments of up to 5,000 words and a 20,000-word dissertation or 10,000-word report.

Graduates of this programme are currently working across a broad range of areas, for example one is a university governance and quality assurance manager, while another is a government policy adviser for education. Others have jobs as academic standards and quality officer, careers and professional development consultant, learning, teaching and quality manager, and qualifications manager and students’ union officer. Some go on to doctoral studies in the field of higher education.
