Why this course?

The MEd in Education Studies allows you to put together a personalised pathway of modules drawing from across the whole of the MEd Programme. Education Studies can be combined with other areas from within the wider MEd programme at the University of Strathclyde.

This course is ideal for those who want to build a broad-based study of education without specialising early in a single area.

The part time version of the MEd in Education Studies is very flexible and we welcome relevant Masters credits that you may have accumulated from earlier study of other courses or at other institutions.

The flexible nature of the course allows you to gain Masters accreditation for professional activities that you’re carrying out as part of your current professional role, such as curriculum development or school or workplace improvement.

You’ll study

This course is available to study full or part-time.

In the full-time route, you’ll study three core modules, including Critical Reading & Writing, in addition to some elective and optional modules. You’ll also undertake a two-part dissertation.

The part-time route is similar to that of the full-time, except you only study one core module – Critical Reading & Writing.

Research project

You’ll carry out a research project of your choice, which is divided into two parts.

In the first part, you’ll develop your understanding of appropriate research methods in education and consider the ethical requirements. In the second part, you’ll be allocated a supervisor in a one-to-one relationship who’ll support you to carry out and report your research project.

The earlier modules of the course will help you decide your area(s) of research.

Pre-Masters preparation course

The Pre-Masters Programme is a preparation course for international students (non EU/UK) who do not meet the entry requirements for a Masters degree at University of Strathclyde. The Pre-Masters programme provides progression to a number of degree options.

Learning & teaching

The course is taught through small group seminars. You’ll be given reading and other reflective activities to carry out in your own time, which will be drawn on in the seminars.
The full-time MEd in Education studies also includes a range of student and staff-led research seminars that you’ll participate in.

The course is assessed through written coursework that draws on academic study and reflection on practical experiences in education.

Careers

The MEd in Education Studies is not a teaching qualification. However, Masters level study of education can enhance students’ academic and professional understanding of education in ways that can enhance practice and career opportunities in the broader field of education.

Education Studies is concerned with understanding how people develop and learn throughout their lives, the nature of knowledge, and critical engagement with ways of knowing and understanding.

This programme offers an intellectually rigorous analysis of educational processes, systems and approaches, and their cultural, societal, political, historical and economic contexts. Postgraduates are able to participate in, and contest, changing discourses exemplified by reference to debate about values, personal and social engagement and how these relate to communities and societies.

Students have opportunities to develop their critical capabilities through the selection, analysis and synthesis of relevant perspectives, and to be able to justify different positions on educational matters. This award provides the knowledge, understanding and critical analysis to inform current and future professionals in education, for different areas and contexts.

The full time MA Education Studies is normally timetabled for teaching on two days a week (currently Tuesdays and Thursdays), with additional independent, guided study requirements.

We welcome applications from non-EU internationals for the full-time route and students are suported at every stage by MMU International.

About the Course

Our MA Education Studies is part of the Postgraduate Research in Education, Community and Society programme. We also have a large number of student-professionals studying on our part time Postgraduate Professional Development Programme.

This means, you will join a lively and forward-thinking postgraduate taught community in the Faculty of Education of over a thousand full and part-time taught postgraduate students. We run some wider events for all our postgraduate taught students, such as the Methodology Fair, where there are multiple opportunities to network, and that provide enhanced opportunities for learning at postgraduate level.

Assessment details

You will be assessed through a variety of coursework driven modules. There are no formal examinations for this course. Taught sessions are mainly conducted during weekdays. In addition to the taught sessions, you are expected to work independently.

Introduction

The MSc in Education Studies and TESOL combines a broad exploration of educational issues, practical experience of observing local schools, and training in TESOL theory, practice and research. On the TESOL side, the degree will provide you with a solid grounding in the principles of language learning and teaching and an understanding of research methods in TESOL, as well as giving you the opportunity to pursue an interest in teaching young learners, computer-assisted and online language learning, or English grammar and discourse analysis. In education studies, you will join a programme of visits to local schools and learn about the wider pastoral role of being an educator in a professional context. You will engage in discussions around the issues of difference and diversity and consider critically some of the wider theoretical and policy-based contexts for professional practice. You will also explore different approaches to educational research and their underlying assumptions.

Who is this course for?

This degree is particularly appropriate for teachers (with at least one year’s experience) who want to study for a post-graduate degree with a strong education element as well as a focus on TESOL. You may be attracted by a broader qualification than the MSc TESOL, or you may want to extend your teaching experience with knowledge about TESOL. You may be planning to teach in a state school or in an international school, and you may teach other subjects as well as English. The degree will also be relevant to you if you wish to go on to study for a PhD or to work in teacher education or school management.

Delivery and assessment

The taught modules delivered on a face-to-face and blended basis. The delivery types (e.g. lectures, workshops and student presentations) are carefully selected to suit the module content and your needs.

Summative assessment for the taught modules will vary depending on their respective learning outcomes (e.g. presentation, annotated bibliography, essay, research proposal). For each 20-credit module, you will be asked to produce a piece of work which is equivalent to a 3,000-word essay.

Education is much more than the study of teaching. Our programme is designed to get you questioning the assumptions that lie beneath educational policy and practice. The MA in Education Studies offers a mixture of theory and reflection on practice within an international context.

This course is for both prospective teachers and non-teachers, who are looking for a new career path. If your ambition is to teach in a school, then this course would be ideally suited to you (although it is not itself a UK teaching qualification). Most of our students are attracted by the academic nature of this award, by its habit of enabling new thinking about things that seemed like common sense.

COURSE STRUCTURE AND CONTENT

You’ll gain a deep insight into education through discussing topics and questions such as the nature of learning; teaching in different countries and cultures; education and the economy; how marketing effects education; how education systems are managed; responsibility in curriculum and teaching; government control in education; and many more.

MODULE STRUCTURE

In the first trimester, you'll study Language and Educational Ideology, and Education: Economics, Politics and Society. Each are worth 30 credits.

In the second trimester, you'll study Education Policy worth 15 credits, Research Methods in Social Science worth 30 credits and also another chosen module which will be worth 15 credits.

In the final trimester, you will go on to study and complete the Dissertation modules which will be worth the final 60 credits of the degree.

TEACHING METHODS

Modules are taught through lectures and small group seminars. There are also individual tutorials and good opportunities for extended discussion with tutors. Analysis of ideas through discussion is the key to teaching and learning in the programme. Some lectures and seminars occur during the day. Others take place from late afternoon.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

There are no written exams and each module is assessed by coursework. This typically involves an essay of 2,500 words for a 15 credit module and 5,000 words for a 30 credit module. Sometimes assessment is by verbal presentation.

Childrearing is not always easy. The Master's programme in Orthopedagogy emphasises the childrearing needs of children, youth and parents. As a remedial educationalist, you can diagnose, treat and help prevent childrearing and development problems at home and/or in an institution. In the African Studies with Education MA students will come to understand some of the challenges surrounding education in contemporary Africa - including poverty, inequality, gender, education and employment, education and technology; vernacular education and the diaspora.

Degree information

The degree pathways share a common core, comprising modules on the continent’s political and economic past and present. The Department of Education offers a one-year (12 month) taught full time MA in Global and International Citizenship Education.

Globalisation is perhaps the key driving force of modern education systems. Schools (and other educational enterprises in universities, businesses and communities) are part of a global network. This programme explores important issues about what it means to be a citizen in a global world - what could and should be done by educators to respond to the needs of individuals and groups in nation states and the new global society. We discuss issues about rights and duties and communities in the UK, Europe and globally and explore learning, teaching and assessment methods in schools and beyond.

This programme will be attractive to all those who have an interest in social studies education. This includes political and ideological education, moral education and education for diversity. This is a broad field that includes global education, comparative education, international education, intercultural understanding and citizenship education. In particular, the programme explores how to help people understand society and develop the skills to take part in it. This includes investigations of European citizenship and global citizenship education and focusing on learning and teaching methods. The programme will be of interest to those who see themselves as current or future teachers, researchers or policy makers. Applications are welcomed from both home and international students. Examples of what our graduates have done include PhD research in Australia; becoming and academic in a university in Japan; being an international student advisor at a university in the USA; working in business and in higher education in China.

In an increasingly global world the study of higher education is no longer limited to local, regional or national contexts. Universities influence and are influenced by factors such as globalisation, technological change and ongoing sophistication of higher education national and international characteristics. The study pathway therefore aims to enhance practice, research and policy of higher education within these fluid contexts. The course contributes to the personal development of those concerned with the study of higher education both formally and informally in a wide range of institutional settings and locations. Coursework encourages you to bring together your personal understanding of issues relating to specific aspects of higher education with the established and current body of professional and academic research literature relevant to your professional or personal aims. Underpinned by the development of advanced, specialist research skills, the course allows you to progressively broaden the knowledge and understanding of your chosen aspects of higher education. The design of authentic course assessment tasks underlines the importance of developing specialised research and professional skills applicable in the workplace. Equally, the research skills element of the course will equip participants with necessary skills for progression to doctoral or independent research.

• National and International Perspectives on Higher Education Policy

This module examines policy and policy-making as distinct processes of implementation and change. Students will consider the approaches of different countries to important debates in the field including the purpose and nature of universities, funding, internationalisation, access and widening participation, management, quality, and regulation processes. Utilising policy analysis methods as well as key concepts and theoretical frameworks students will critically examine comparative evidence to enhance their knowledge and understanding of higher education principles, processes and practices drawing on individual national case studies. The module covers the following broad areas of higher education policy, policy-making and change:

• Access, recruitment and widening participation
• Quality assurance and regimes of (de)regulation in higher education
• Management and change at institutional, national and international level
• Tiers of higher education provision, rankings and their implications for governments and universities.
• Higher education financing and shifting patterns of funding.
• Internationalisation, global competition and cross-border flow of students and researchers.

• Universities as Contemporary Learning and Teaching Environments

This module examines the historical development of research in teaching-learning with a view to identify key contributions that influenced how we conceptualise teaching-learning in the university sector. Several theoretical traditions are presented (e.g. communities of practice, student approaches to learning, actor network theory) and emphasis is placed on the role of assessment and feedback as well as the wide-scale implementation of technological media in higher education and their impact on new modalities of learning. Students will be offered the means to enhance their critical understanding and use of relevant theory by supporting critical and systematic reflection on the changing nature of teaching-learning in higher education, on the changing management landscape, and on the relationships between them in national and international contexts.

• Special Research Methods in Higher Education

This module provides an overview of the methods and methodologies applied to research in higher education. In doing so, it provides links between higher education and educational and social research in general without losing its particular focus and applicability on higher education settings. The meanings and associations between methods are discussed and their position in wider epistemological paradigms is considered. Students will be given an overview of the development of these methods and methodologies in higher education and will develop applied research skills on methods relevant to their practice or interests. Conclusions will be drawn on the methodological opportunities and challenges of the presented research methods and their supplementary to wider educational and social research will be critically examined.

• Educational and Social Research Methods

This module provides you with the opportunity to consider the aims and intentions of educational research, critique published journal articles, and examine the role of evidence from research as a basis for improving education and social care. You will gain grounding in educational research issues, methods and strategies together with knowledge of how to match intended outcomes with specific educational questions and methods of investigation.

• Postgraduate Major Study

This module supports students in the preparation and submission of their Master's Major project and involves a dissertation of 14,000 words or the equivalent. The Major Project enables students to demonstrate the ability to raise significant and meaningful questions in relation to their specialism which may involve working at the current limits of theoretical and / or research understanding. It will involve the ability to develop solutions to ethical dilemmas likely to arise in their research or professional practice. The project enables students to expand or redefine existing knowledge, to develop new approaches to changing workplace situations and / or to contribute to the development of best practice. It asks the student to communicate these processes in a clear and elegant fashion and to evaluate their work from the perspective of an autonomous reflective learner. Students' research topics must be negotiated with their appointed supervisor. An application for ethical approval and ethics discussion paper must then be submitted. The project may take the form of a written dissertation, a formal presentation and full research paper, an exhibition, a performance, an artefact or the development of software, or other written, aural or visual material. The project may be formed from a combination of these modes but will normally include a written component.

Assessment

You will be assessed in a number of ways, from systematic literature reviews to reflective accounts on your professional practice, to ensure you're learning effectively. Other forms of assessment may include presentations, critical analyses of existing research, producing a dissemination poster and a research project. Each module comprises of one summative assessment and one core formative assessment. The assessment of the modules places emphasis on authenticity of the assessment tasks. Assessment are designed to strengthen your ability to conduct research in higher education settings.

Programme Contents

Courses in English Studies focus on several topics relating to the English language, literatures in English, and teaching English. You can choose to combine courses from one or more lines according to your interests. In Linguistics courses you will focus on the structure and uses of English as well as on language variation and change, sociolinguistics and corpus linguistics. In the Literature courses you will study several areas of the various literatures in English from narrative, cognitive, postcolonial and ecocritical perspectives. Courses in Applied Linguistics are tailored especially for future language teachers.

As a student in English Studies, you will attend lectures but also work in collaboration with other students, partly in digital learning environments. To assess your learning progress, several methods are used, such as examinations, essays and learning diaries. In English Studies you will also practice your spoken and presentation skills.

During your Master’s studies, you can:
-Progress further in your linguistic or literary studies and choose the most interesting courses.
-Strengthen your understanding of theory in your chosen field.
-Strengthen your language skills, academic writing skills and presentation skills.
-Participate in research projects.
-Participate in the Master’s thesis seminar, during which you will write your thesis.
-Complete studies abroad as an exchange student (if you have not done so already).
-Complete practical training, by working as a trainee or a substitute teacher, for instance.

Selection of the Major

You can choose between two specialisations, Teacher Training and General. For the teacher’s specialisation, pedagogical studies are mandatory, and there is a separate selection process for these studies. If you choose the General specialisation, you can combine English Studies with other studies according to your interests.

Programme Structure

The scope of the Master’s degree is 120 credits (ECTS). The degree contains the following studies:
-Advanced studies in the discipline (60–120 credits) and
-If needed, you can take other courses to achieve the minimum credit requirement for the degree (a total of 120 credits).

With full-time studies you should be able to complete the Master’s degree in two years.

During your Master’s studies, you will focus mainly on your major subject, deepening your knowledge through coursework and writing your Master’s thesis. The advanced studies in your major subject include professional skills courses, which are typically completed as practical training.

Depending on your interests, you can also include minor subjects and other supporting studies.

To help you complete your studies systematically, you will prepare a personal study plan (PSP) at the beginning of your Master’s studies, with support especially from the programme staff and from the Faculty and University administrators.

English Studies will prepare you for several careers in business and culture, as well as in public administration and education:
-With careful selection of supporting studies, you can find employment in government, the media, libraries and other cultural institutions, national and international organisations, or tourism.

Graduates from the Education MA have gone on to be successful in a variety of fields related to education. Graduates who are already in teaching positions have reported that they have been promoted, often to senior leadership positions.
