Equip yourself with the requisite knowledge of evidence based midwifery practice and skills required to provide holistic women and family centred care.

Edinburgh Napier University are proud to offer the new pre-registration Masters of Midwifery programme.

Midwives are recognised as experts in supporting women during pregnancy, birth and postpartum. We believe midwifery fosters the belief that childbirth is a normal physiological experience to be nurtured and respected.

What you'll learn

As a midwife you will be recognised as an expert in supporting and advising women and their families during pregnancy, childbirth and post-partum care. This course offers you the opportunity to develop clinical midwifery practice in a variety of healthcare settings and through simulated practice using our state of the art facilities. You will critically explore the provision of maternity services embracing the challenges of prioritising compassion, professionalism and trust.

You will be supported by a team of midwife lecturers who have expertise in both clinical practice and current research.
Midwives are autonomous practitioners who practice in a multi-disciplinary care setting. Midwifery is a very distinct independent health profession which possesses its own knowledge skills and competencies. Midwifery care holistically encompasses the unique experience of each individual woman throughout their journey.

The study of midwifery will teach you the theory of being a midwife through a blended learning approach including lectures, tutorials, online self-directed learning and workshops. On placement you’ll relate theory to real life practice supported by a midwife mentor specifically trained to support you and assess your achievement.

The experience you gain will enable you to become a conscientious midwife and contribute positively to advancing midwifery practice. You’ll become knowledgeable and skilled in the care of pregnant women, their babies and families and graduate ready to go straight into work.

You’ll also be eligible to apply for registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council. This qualification means that you’ve been assessed to be a safe and competent midwife with the necessary understanding and abilities.

Nurses today need to be able to demonstrate competence in nursing care across the patient’s lifespan. To deliver this, they need to be able to work flexibly, inter-professionally and collaboratively in a dynamic and ever changing health care arena.

Our nursing programme has been written to take account of the key drivers in health care at local, national and international levels and was developed in partnership with our clinical partners, students, service users and carers.

During each year of the programme you will learn alongside colleagues in all fields of nursing, and will work with peers from the MN and the undergraduate nursing programme. The course is designed so that you will acquire in-depth knowledge and understanding which gives you specific skills, knowledge and competences to work within a variety of health-care settings. There is increasing nursing field specialisation as the programme progresses which keeps you abreast of the current developments within your chosen field of nursing. On completion, this course will support you to become a creative, innovated and dynamic nurse with an excellent grounding in nursing theory and practice.

Year 1 lays the foundations about what the role of the nurse is and introduces you to the Nursing and Midwifery code as well as theories and models of nursing and nursing skills. It also focuses on anatomy and physiology, determinants of health across the life span, communication, compassionate care, and ethics and inter-professional working. You will also begin to develop academic and research skills.
Year 2 to builds on the work undertaken previously, but also introduces factors which influence health and well-being such as global and national public health priorities. You will explore the impact of altered health status on the individual and their family/carers over the life span. In addition, you will acquire deeper understanding of inter-professional healthcare delivery which includes looking at aspects of co-production, individuals’ rights and inclusion.

Year 3 builds and consolidates your knowledge within your specific field of nursing. Here you will looks more specifically at complex health care needs, health care delivery, interventions, governance, leadership and decision-making. The degree is made up of three parts: taught classes, work-based learning, and a research project. All of these elements are designed to apply theory and advanced practice to enhance current approaches to sound design for linear and interactive media.

The MSc Sound Design is delivered over either 18 or 30 months on a part time basis. All of the modules are delivered by distance learning. In addition, you will also develop a deep understanding of how to assess approaches of affecting audiences’ perceptions of linear and interactive media using sound design.

Emphasis is placed on cognisance with professional standards for the production and documentation of sound designs for linear and interactive media, and familiarity with a comprehensive set of methods of assessing listening experiences.

The course builds upon Edinburgh Napier University’s close contacts with internationally recognised professional sound designers for both linear and interactive media.

http://www.napier.ac.uk/courses/msc-sound-design-postgraduate-distance-learning-part-time

Year 1

• Listening
• Sound design for linear media
• Sound design for interactive media
• Advanced professional practice

In the first year, you will study Advanced Professional Practice (APP) for three trimesters. This allows you to tailor your learning needs to those of your organisation or the relevant industries.
Within the first few weeks of this module, under the direction of your academic supervisor you will develop your own learning agreement, which defines the deliverables of this module. If you are an employee you will do this in negotiation with your organisation.

If you are freelance, you may either negotiate with key clients or discuss an equivalent with your supervisor. Your supervisor will mentor you throughout the three trimesters towards the achievement of the deliverables. You will provide a reflective journal on your learning.
During the first year, you will also study one module per trimester: sound design for linear media, listening and sound design for interactive media. These modules will be taken in the order determined by the date of entry to the course.

Each module is independent of the others. One objective of the APP module is for you to apply immediately, in your practice, the knowledge gained from these three taught modules. After successful completion of the year, you will be eligible for a PG Dip Sound Design. In the second year, you will complete your MSc dissertation in part time mode.

Year 2
