From upheavals in the housing market to high bonuses for bankers, from rising taxes to the global credit crisis, economics is no longer a straightforward matter of money and finance. Economics today is a multifaceted discipline with real impact on global politics, law, and society. In the Utrecht University MSc in Multidisciplinary Economics, you learn to cross the borders of economics into other scientific disciplines – a real strength of the Utrecht University School of Economics (U.S.E.) - in order to provide sound research and applicable solutions to real-world problems, now and in the future.

RESEARCH EXPERTISE

Human Geography is a research field which focuses on studying the spatial behaviour of people, firms and organisations. Or, to put it simply, it is a study that observes the relationship between human activities and their spatial environment. Because it is an integrative discipline, Human Geography serves as an excellent platform for integrating knowledge from various related disciplines, such as Sociology, Anthropology, Psychology, International Relations, Economics, Business Administration and Development Studies.

Specialisations in the Master's in Human Geography

The Human Geography Master's programme at Radboud University offers five specialisations and the option to develop your own specialisation:

The programme aims to deliver a well-developed understanding of climate change and environmental and resource economics. The programme delves into the conceptual economic foundations and the practical tools of analysis, including state-of-the-art quantitative methods.

Environmental economics is playing an increasingly central role in understanding the causes of, and designing policy solutions to, contemporary environmental and resource problems. It has been instrumental in informing policy across the world, for example in the creation of markets for pollutants such as acid rain and carbon, the design of new instruments for the conservation of ecosystem services and the efficient use of natural resources.

Across a wide range of issues such as biodiversity loss and fisheries management, sustainable economic development and the formation of international environmental agreements, the theory and applied tools of environmental economics are uniquely placed to inform and guide decision-makers in addressing environmental challenges. Climate change is the most formidable environmental concern facing the planet today and the lessons and tools of environmental economics are highly relevant for thinking about, and providing solutions to, this global economic problem.

The Faculty of Education has a longstanding national reputation for providing high-calibre initial teacher training with over 20 Secondary specialisms available. We have a well established partnership with over 800 schools and colleges across the North West region and beyond.

Our geography routes into teaching in secondary schools will develop trainees' understanding of school geography through a wide variety of university sessions and school-based learning. The PGCE views fieldwork as an essential part of school geography. Trainees will undertake a residential experience in September to consider the management of safe fieldwork. University based sessions model and encourage critical engagement of the use of new technologies, GIS, thinking skills and enquiry in school geography.

Subject to confirmation of DfE funding, we usually run free, pre-entry Subject Knowledge Enhancement courses for national priority subjects, including Geography. These will be identified at interview for applicants who need support in some areas and confirmed with a PGCE place offer.

A minimum of 120 days school based practice training is combined with university based training and periods of independent study. Trainees are supported throughout by university and placement mentors.

This course is available via University led and School Direct routes.

We also offer an Assessment-Only route to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) aimed at experienced, but unqualified graduate teachers, wishing to complete a formal qualification.

Placement options

School placements are central to the course. As an intending teacher you will begin by developing professional awareness, understanding and skills common to learning and teaching in a variety of settings. You will begin to understand the inter-relationship between the school and its community.

Placements will be in at least two different schools or colleges and will range from inner city to rural settings, mixed and single gender schools, City Academies, Comprehensives and Selective Schools, 11-16, 11-18, sixth form and further education colleges. The Enrichment Phase also offers placements in settings other than schools.

Trainees also have the opportunity to apply for a four week enrichment experience overseas. These help to develop an international educational perspective and provide the chance to gain some teaching experience in an international school. Enrichment is in addition to PGCE units of study and opportunities may differ year on year, for example, in 2016 trainees were placed at British International Schools in Kazakhstan, Cyprus or Norway or public schools in Orleans, France.

About the Course

We offer a structured course of taught sessions that aim to develop geography teachers who are competent, confident, innovative and able to reflect honestly in terms of professional teaching practice.

The university-based element of the course examines the nature and content of school geography, investigating a range of approaches to teaching and learning. You are introduced to strategies for developing schemes of work and individual lesson plans, together with associated forms of assessment for learning.

Trainees experience a range of placements in all phases of the course, including two contrasting secondary schools, a primary school and some post-16 experience.

Your practical experience and application are given depth and coherence through the consideration of theoretical and educational issues, to enable you to gain knowledge and understanding of the school context, the pupil and the secondary classroom.

You will have opportunities to develop your:
-Knowledge and understanding of the content of the geography curriculum and the progression through the different key stages
-Knowledge and understanding of a wide range of teaching and learning methods
-Knowledge and understanding of the use and application of fieldwork and geographical information systems (GIS)
-Knowledge and understanding of the use of new technologies including iPads in the geography classroom

Information on the Programme

The master programme Economics consists of 120 ECTS- (European Credit Transfer System) Points and is designed as a 4-semester full-time programme. It is a consecutive master degree based on a bachelor degree within the field of economics.
The Core and Advanced Section of the master programme economics contains 48 credit points. This area covers content-specific and methodological basics of micro and macroeconomics, statistics, econometrics and mathematics. These competencies enable students to comprehend scientific literature of economic science and furthermore to independently analyse economic problems on an advanced theoretical and empirical level. Students will be able to select modules on a research- and methods oriented level (Research Track Modules), which allows them to assemble a course package following already acquired knowledge, interest and training objective.
In the specialisation section, students choose two out of six different subareas (fields). In each one, 18 credit points with 3 specialisation modules have to be obtained. These fields reflect research- and application focuses of the faculty in the area of economics:
• Design and Behavior
• Energy Economics
• Growth, Labor and Inequality in the Global Economy
• Markets and Institutions
• Macroeconomics, Money and Financial Markets
• Public Economics
• Statistics and Econometrics

Overview

You'll develop the skills needed by today's environmental managers, policymakers and scientists to tackle environmental issues at local, regional and global levels. You'll be prepared for a wide range of careers across the public and private sectors. This Masters also provides a good basis for further study at PhD level.

The core modules will provide you with knowledge in Environmental Economics and a appreciation of the challenges to which economic analysis can be applied. You'll also be equipped to incorporate environmental feedback into economic decision making in a way that satisfies both ecological managers and economists.

This Masters is suitable for students from a wide range of backgrounds, including economics, human geography, business, sociology, politics, environmental science and more. You'll be taught by a range of interdisciplinary staff with varied Environmental research interests.

Course Content

You'll learn about the economics and management of natural resources and develop your critical and analytical skills in these areas. You'll gain both theoretical and practical experience of issues in environmental economics and management. You will be trained in suitable research methods and relevant ethical and legal issues. You'll develop your research skills and experience through completing a large research project.

For the Masters you will need to take a 100 credits of taught modules. There are four core modules, which amount to 50 of your 100 required credits:

Each student will take 40 taught credits from existing modules and the dissertation component of the MRes allows the student to develop and explore a deep understanding of their topic. It is expected that the MRes will result in publications. The MRes is an ideal basis for pursuing a research career through a PhD.

In this degree you will investigate the circular economy, resource efficiency and sustainable resource management and you will qualify with the skills and knowledge to become a leader in this field.

About this degree

The curriculum fully reflects the global nature of the subject. You will gain in-depth expertise of the environmental, social and economic aspects of the management and governance of resources from both public policy and industrial perspectives. Key concepts include resource efficiency and circular economy, the resource nexus and sustainable supply chain management.

Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits.

Fieldwork

Students will participate in a field trip to the Birmingham area, which will include site visits to leading businesses and organisations in the area of sustainable resources and the circular economy. There will be no additional costs to students for this trip.

The MSc in Sustainable Development and Environmental Economics is a one-year, full-time taught postgraduate programme run by the School of Geography and Sustainable Development.

Sharing teaching elements from the MSc in Sustainable Development, this programme takes an interdisciplinary approach and draws on economic analysis and thinking to understand the links between people and their environment, resulting in a programme of study which is both intellectually stimulating and highly relevant to today’s job market.

Highlights

  • Interdisciplinary teaching provides multiple perspectives. Students are taught by experts from disciplines across the University. 
  • Field trips, such as to a Scottish highland estate, bring the subject alive by exploring practical applications of sustainable development. (Field trips are at no additional cost.)

Teaching format

During the taught portion of the programme, students take seven modules which are taught via lectures, tutorials, seminar presentations, student-led workshops, as well as field trips and away days. Modules are assessed through written examinations and coursework including class tests, presentations and review essays.

Over the course of the programme, but with particular focus during the summer months, students will research a project area and produce an academic literature review, a professional policy brief and a reflective essay.

This programme provides an understanding of the key themes of contemporary geographical thought and allows you to develop an appreciation of the methodological implications of such theoretical developments.

Human geography and urban studies are dynamic and pertinent areas of the social sciences, drawing together concerns with space, economy, society and the environment. In addition to the understanding key geographical themes and methodology insight, you will be able to develop a substantive field of research interest.

This programme will be of interest if you have studied geography or a related social science subject at undergraduate level and are now looking for a more focused introduction to human geographical research. It is designed as preparation for study at PhD level, as well as further training in a broad range of substantive geographical and environmental themes. It draws on the breadth of theoretical understanding, research expertise and practical experience in the Department as well as the strength of LSE’s offering across the social sciences, allowing for learning in specialised courses elsewhere in LSE.

Programme syllabus

The programme comprises four module groups:

A) Core modules
B) Regional area studies
C) Business administration and economics
D) Foreign languages

A) The core modules are further subdivided into two areas: theory and methods as one area and applied skills as the other. You will gain well-founded knowledge of intercultural communication and comparative cultural studies, intercultural management and academic research. Moreover, you will work on a cultural project outside the University and hone transferable skills by choosing your own Key Competencies courses taught by professional instructors.

B) In this module group you will consolidate your knowledge related to your chosen cultural region in up to three of the following subjects: cultural studies, literary studies, linguistics, history, geography, political science, sociology, history of art/visual culture, intercultural communication, communication studies, media studies, philosophy or digital humanities.

C) You will choose business studies or economics modules in this module group: The business modules are concerned with international market-oriented business management and organisation as well as marketing; the economics modules include international economics, development economics, economic policy and behavioural economics.

D) You will choose two of the following foreign languages: Chinese, Czech, English, French, German (for speakers of other languages), Indonesian, Italian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Thai or Vietnamese. If you intend to choose the English language option you will need to have advanced English language skills. No existing language skills are presupposed for the other languages (i.e. they are also available ab initio). However, if you do have existing language skills, they will be taken into account by way of a placement test. The subject-specific language programmes are available with a business/economics focus or a cultural studies focus.
