Course structure

- Year 1

During the first year, you take the Diploma in Economic Analysis (DEA), which is a qualification in its own right, and brings you up to the standard required to continue with MSc study. The DEA consists of five compulsory modules.

- Year 2

Students who pass the DEA with 60% and above can then proceed to one of the following MSc programmes in year two:

- MSc Economics

Labour and education economics

Staff research includes work in the areas of wage distributions, skills and job quality, education, migration and trade.

Macroeconomics, money and finance

Staff research in this area includes: macroeconometric theory; monetary policy; financial markets and macroeconomic performance growth theory and international macroeconomics; theoretical models of business cycles, labour market search and financial sources of economic fluctuations; DSGE models; growth theory and empirics.

Microeconomic theory, games and behaviour

Research interests cover public economics especially tax policy; gambling and uncertainty; international trade and government procurement; health economics; public goods; leadership in co-ordination games; industrial organisation; theoretic modelling; economic history.

Development economics

Research interests include work on growth; trade; the balance of payments; different aspects of migration and remittances on growth; applied studies focusing on particular developing countries.

Agri-environmental economics

Research interests cover non-market valuation, food safety, information economics applied to environmental problems, design and evaluation of agri-environmental policies, biodiversity, agricultural productivity, European agricultural policy, agricultural trade policy.

Transport and regional economics

Research strengths are the regional impact of transport investments; the economic evaluation of infrastructure; regulation and alternative funding models; the economics of public-private partnerships.

Quantitative Methods

In this module you will develop an understanding of basic mathematical methods that are used in the study of Economics and Finance, including basic matrix analysis, topology, statistics, and probability theory. You will look at differentiation and integration of standard functions, and basic manipulations of vectors and matrices. You will also examine various optimisation problems and theorems leading to certain basic results in calculus.

Graduate Diploma

This one-year diploma is administered by the Department of Economics and provides students with a solid understanding of the main topics in economics. It is a programme largely at an undergraduate level, designed both as an entry qualification for postgraduate study and as a bridge between undergraduate and postgraduate work.

The programme is suitable as a standalone qualification for those wishing to change their career path or develop within their present profession. Alternatively, the Diploma acts as a conversion course for students without previous economics training who wish to take an MSc programme in Economics.

The programme is offered on a full-time basis, over a period of nine months commencing in early September with a three weeks long pre-sessional. Subsequently, students take four courses: Microeconomic Analysis, Macroeconomic Analysis, Quantitative Techniques in Economics OR Econometrics, and EITHER Issues in Economic Development OR International Economics OR Banking and Finance. Assessment is in the form of written examinations and course work. Completion of the Graduate Diploma at an acceptable level allows students to take one of the MScs in Economics in the following year.

The Graduate Diploma may also be taken on a part-time basis over two years. Students undertaking the programme on that basis must take Microeconomic Analysis and Quantitative Techniques in Economics OR Econometrics in the first year, and take Macroeconomic Analysis and EITHER Issues in Economic Development OR International Economics OR Banking and Finance in the second year. The pre-sessional in September requires full-time attendance.

The entry requirements are normally a first or upper second class honours degree (or equivalent). The aim of Preliminary Economic Analysis is to provide a condensed introduction to the fundamental concepts of micro- and macroeconomics. Our Graduate Diploma in Economics and its new pathway, the Graduate Diploma in Quantitative Economics, fill a critical gap in the market for postgraduate training in economics. If you have an undergraduate degree in another subject area - however distant from economics - but wish to switch to economics, the Graduate Diploma in Economics and the Graduate Diploma in Quantitative Economics are specifically designed to allow you to do just that, without spending 3 or 4 years studying for a second undergraduate degree. They provide rigorous and intensive training, spread over 1 or 2 years, after which you will be able to compete on equal terms with students graduating with undergraduate degrees in economics.

Many of our students require a level of economic knowledge in their jobs that is usually acquired at an undergraduate level; many of them work for City institutions, the Bank of England, government departments and economic regulators. This Graduate Diploma provides them with a sound knowledge of the core analytical tools of economics, coupled with some training in econometrics - the statistical side of the discipline.

The Graduate Diploma in Quantitative Economics is designed for students who wish to go on to Master's-level study, with the ultimate ambition of becoming a professional economist, whether in the private or public sector, or an academic economist (which requires further study to PhD level). Many students go on to MSc and MPhil/PhD programmes at Birkbeck and other top UK universities.

Uniquely, this programme provides training specifically designed for such students. All modules on the programme are designed carefully around targeted, accelerated learning, in contrast to conversion courses in other universities that simply offer modules that are already part of other undergraduate programmes.

This programme is also available for distance-learners, as a purely online course. For both face-to-face and online students, all lectures are made available on video, and all course materials are also available online.

You will not need any prior training in the subject. The programme will give you a thorough grounding in the fundamental ideas and methods of modern economics, and you will learn to apply economic reasoning to practical problems. Crucially, you will also develop the necessary mathematical and statistical tool-kit for studying economics. A background in a mathematical discipline is an advantage, but not essential; pre-sessional courses beginning in September provide an accelerated revision of core mathematics skills, starting at roughly GCSE level, but progressing very rapidly to more advanced techniques.

All students will be admitted to the Graduate Diploma in Economics in the first instance, but you will be offered the opportunity to transfer to the Graduate Diploma in Quantitative Economics. This includes an additional module that introduces you to more technical material and bridges the gap between undergraduate and postgraduate study in economics.

The 1-year programme is taught exclusively in the evenings and is, thus, open to students in full-time employment, but the programme proceeds at an intense pace and the workload is very heavy, so this option is usually only pursued by students with a strongly quantitative background. The more common route is to take the programme over 2 years, with the first year focused primarily on quantitative training. All students have the option of being considered for the intensive 1-year route, though, based on their performance in the mid-term tests in week 6 of the first term of the programme.

WHAT DOES THE MASTER IN ENERGY ENGINEERING OFFER TO ITS STUDENTS

In the last years both industrialization and population growth have brought to a higher demand for sustainable energy, smart energy management with reduced environmental impact. As a result the MSc Energy Engineering was born out of the need to better cope with Sustainable Development issues and progress in energy conversion technologies, in including renewable energy generation and energy storage, NZE buildings, with an increasing attention devoted to greenhouse gas emissions reduction through a multidisciplinary approach.

This MSc course is taught in English and students are supported in achieving higher English language skills. The University of Genoa set its modern campus in Savona and in the last few years, public and private funds have been invested to improve its infrastructures, sport facilities, hall of residence, library and an auditorium.

The University of Genoa and Siemens jointly developed a smart polygeneration microgrid in Savona Campus – officially commissioned on February 2014.

Since then the campus has largely generated enough power to satisfy its own needs with the help of several networked energy producers, i.e. total capacity 250Kw of electricity and 300kW of heating.

The grid includes microgasturbines, absorption chillers, a photovoltaic plant, a solar power station and electrochemical and thermal storage systems.

This huge facility together with a series of laboratories located at the Campus (e.g. Combustion Lab, Energy Hub Lab) offer the students a unique opportunity for hands-on activities, e.g. to measure and investigate the performance of real scale innovative energy systems.

The 2-year MA Finance programme is structured to provide an international quality education in Finance, Economics and Econometrics for students with an interest in, and aptitude for, Finance but no necessary prior background. This programme provides rigorous graduate level training in Finance to a standard appropriate to a professional practitioner.

The programme is designed to help the student become a problem solver and therefore enhance their flexibility in the job market. It is a stimulating and challenging degree that aims to provide the student with a wide range of skills demanded by the financial sector. Successful graduates attain economic, quantitative and communication skills that are highly sought by employers in the public and private sectors.

Course Structure

The first year is an intensive and extensive introduction to the world of economics and finance. The aim is that by the year end, students will be at the same level as a graduate of a BA / BBS / BSc graduate in Economics and / or Finance. Students will cover the basic concepts, empirical methods and applications in Investment, Derivatives, International Finance and Econometrics as well as choosing field courses of interest from a range of optional modules.

The second year builds upon this and is structured to be stimulating and challenging. It is designed to give graduates the necessary economic and quantitative skills that employers seek today. In the first semester, students take modules in the core areas of Microeconomics, Macroeconomics and Econometrics as well as a module in research methods. All modules are a mixture of theory and practical application. In the second semester, students must take Financial Economics and Derivatives as well as two field courses. Field courses offered in any year may include, International Finance, Market Microstructure, Financial Risk Analysis, Corporate Finance and International Trade. During this semester, students also develop a thesis proposal under the guidance of their supervisor. The thesis allows the student to undertake independent research and is completed over the summer.

Building services engineering is an interdisciplinary profession. It involves the specification, design, installation and management of all the engineering services associated with the built environment.

With the growing complexity of engineering services in modern buildings and the significance of energy conservation and pollution control, the role of the building services engineer is becoming increasingly important.

As an interdisciplinary profession that involves the specification, design, installation and management of all the engineering services associated with the built environment, comfort and function also need to be combined – which calls for engineers with a wide range of knowledge and skills.

This MSc programme is for:

Recent engineering and technology graduates, moving into building services and related disciplines.

Modes of Study
3-5 Years Distance Learning

The distance learning programme is designed to enable you to conduct most of your studies at home, in your own time and at your own pace.

There is no requirement to attend lectures at Brunel University and there is no set timetable of lectures, instead you follow a structured programme of self-study at home or at work. This gives you the freedom to arrange a work programme to suit yourself and you should usually allow about twelve hours each week for study.

There are set submission dates for assignments but we have tried to design the programme so that they are well-spaced, giving you the maximum flexibility in your study plans.

You can take between three and five years to complete the course. The average is three years, with students taking four modules in the first year, four modules in the second year and the dissertation in the third year. However, depending on your other commitments you can take longer up to a maximum of five years.

You are supplied with a study pack in the form of textbooks and CD-ROMs; you have assignments to submit and exams to sit each year.

Examinations can be taken either at Brunel University or in the country you are resident in. We have an extensive network of organisations (universities, colleges and British Council offices) throughout the world who will provide invigilation services.

The cost of invigilation away from Brunel is your responsibility. Examinations are held in May each year.

Energy Conversion Technologies
This element provides a broad introduction to the principles of energy conversion and thermodynamic machines and demonstrates their application to energy conversion and management in buildings. Emphasis is placed on refrigeration plant, energy conversion plant and energy management.
Refrigeration covers the basic principles and components of vapour compression systems, heat pumps and absorption systems.
Energy Conversion considers power cycles, combined heat and power, combustion processes, boiler plant, thermal energy storage and environmental impacts of plant operation.

Theme B - Renewable

Renewable Energy Technologies
This element includes: energy sources, economics and environmental impact, energy storage technologies, the role of renewables, solar thermal, solar electricity, wind power generation, hydro, tidal and wave power, biofuels, building integrated renewables.

Accreditation

The course is approved by the Chartered Institute of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE) and the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) as appropriate additional academic study (further learning) for those seeking to become qualified to register as Chartered Engineers (CEng).

Teaching

It is suitable for recent graduates who wish to develop the specialist knowledge and skills relevant to this industry and is also suitable as advanced study in preparation for research work in an academic or industrial environment.

In semesters 1 and 2, the programmes comprises a mixture of taught courses, workshops and a group design project, led by leading experts in the field, covering the key topics in power systems, electrical machines and power electronics. The final part of the programme is an individual dissertation, which provides a good opportunity for students to apply their acquired skills to real problems in electrical power engineering.

This one year programme at the University of Edinburgh will immerse the students in the most current developments in the area of Electrical Power Engineering, through a combination of taught modules, workshops, a research dissertation, and a range of supporting activities delivered by internationally leading experts in the field. Governments worldwide are putting in place plans to decarbonise and modernise their electricity sector. A transition to a green economy will require a highly skilled workforce led by electrical power engineers with a solid academic background, an appreciation of the trajectory of the industry and an understanding of the challenges and implications brought about by the introduction of new power technologies.

According to the Institution for Engineering & Technology (IET): “The business of managing and distributing power in the UK is beginning to undergo revolutionary changes and [power] engineers are the people who will play a pivotal role in keeping the lights on”. This also holds true in many other developed and developing countries in the world.

Power engineers are employed in public/governmental organisations as well as in the private sector and cover areas spanning from generation, to conversion and transmission of electrical power, design and manufacturing of power components and systems, and energy policy and commerce. The MSc Economic and Financial Risk Analysis was launched in response to the changing economic and financial environment. It is designed to provide students with the fundamental concepts and the necessary tools required by the financial sector. The MSc in Science of Energy consists of six taught modules worth 10 ECTS each. These are structured around a cross-cutting introductory module. The introductory module is designed to furnish students with all of the basic physics, chemistry and engineering concepts that are required to become an "Energy Scientist". These basics are complemented by essential "Economics of Energy" and "Principles of Energy Policy".

Now with the ability to understand and analyse the competing aspects of all of the essential science, engineering and economics pertinent to the energy discipline, the students proceed to Five specialised technically orientated core modules; "Conventional Energy Sources & Technologies", "Electric Power Generation and Distribution", "Sustainable Energy Sources & Technologies I & II", and "Managing the impact of Energy Utilisation".

Introducing your degree

Overview

The full-time course is taught by leading researchers in this field. You will learn to apply the latest statistical analysis tools. You also have the opportunity to study advanced modules in coastal, environmental, infrastructure and transport engineering.

The year is divided into two semesters. Each semester, you will select from a range of specialist modules, including earthquake engineering and groundwater hydrology and contamination. You also have the option to develop your knowledge of project economics, and law and contracts.

Practical sessions form a large part of the course. You will have access to specialist facilities, including heavy structures, hydraulics and geotechnical laboratories. You will also complete a final research project to evolve your critical-thinking and technical expertise.

We offer two pathways - a conversion pathway for non-Civil Engineering graduates wishing to convert their degree, and a standard pathway for those who already have a first degree in Civil Engineering; both pathways undertake a research project.
