If you have an undergraduate degree in a subject other than Economics, the Conversion programme offers you a two-year route to our Economics MSc programmes.
During the first year, you take the Diploma in Economic Analysis (DEA). This brings you up to the standards required to continue with MSc study. Students who pass the DEA with 60% and above then proceed to one of our MSc programmes. Students who pass but do not achieve 60% are awarded the DEA.
All of our MSc degrees equip you with a range of quantitative and analytical skills, and the ability to communicate complex economic concepts in a clear and concise style. Our programmes not only offer a stimulating education in economic theory, but also develop your ability to apply economic knowledge, analytical tools and skills to a range of national and international problems in the areas of finance, development, agriculture and the environment.

The following modules are indicative of those offered on this programme. This list is based on the current curriculum and may change year to year in response to new curriculum developments and innovation. Most programmes will require you to study a combination of compulsory and optional modules. You may also have the option to take modules from other programmes so that you may customise your programme and explore other subject areas that interest you.
Assessment is through a wide variety of methods including seminar presentations, extended essays, short projects, in-class tests, examinations, and the dissertation.
This programme aims to:
- provide the opportunity for students who already have a degree to proceed to study economics at Master’s level when they have not previously studied economics
- provide you with the knowledge, analytical and other skills from which you can proceed to further study in economics and develop a deeper understanding of economic theory, econometric and quantitative techniques and policy applications to specific areas
- provide a stimulating education in the principles of economics and their application, in which high-quality teaching motivates you to achieve your full potential
- provide options to enable you to study selected areas of economics in depth
- develop your ability to apply economic knowledge, analytical tools and skills in a range of theoretical, applied and policy problems
- develop your independent research skills and prepare you for work as a professional economist or in an area related to economics
- provide you with information and advice on future employment and further postgraduate study.
Labour and education economics
Staff research includes work in the areas of wage distributions, skills and job quality, education, migration and trade.
Macroeconomics, money and finance
Staff research in this area includes: macroeconometric theory; monetary policy; financial markets and macroeconomic performance growth theory and international macroeconomics; theoretical models of business cycles, labour market search and financial sources of economic fluctuations; DSGE models; growth theory and empirics.
Microeconomic theory, games and behaviour
Research interests cover public economics especially tax policy; gambling and uncertainty; international trade and government procurement; health economics; public goods; leadership in co-ordination games; industrial organisation; theoretic modelling; economic history.
Research interests include work on growth; trade; the balance of payments; different aspects of migration and remittances on growth; applied studies focusing on particular developing countries.
Research interests cover non-market valuation, food safety, information economics applied to environmental problems, design and evaluation of agri-environmental policies, biodiversity, agricultural productivity, European agricultural policy, agricultural trade policy.
Transport and regional economics
Research strengths are the regional impact of transport investments; the economic evaluation of infrastructure; regulation and alternative funding models; the economics of public-private partnerships.

This one-year programme is designed to equip graduates and professionals with a broad and robust training on modern power engineering technologies, with a strong focus on renewable energy conversion and smart grids. It is suitable for recent graduates who wish to develop the specialist knowledge and skills relevant to this industry and is also suitable as advanced study in preparation for research work in an academic or industrial environment.
In semesters 1 and 2, the programmes comprises a mixture of taught courses, workshops and a group design project, led by leading experts in the field, covering the key topics in power systems, electrical machines and power electronics. The final part of the programme is an individual dissertation, which provides a good opportunity for students to apply their acquired skills to real problems in electrical power engineering.
This one year programme at the University of Edinburgh will immerse the students in the most current developments in the area of Electrical Power Engineering, through a combination of taught modules, workshops, a research dissertation, and a range of supporting activities delivered by internationally leading experts in the field. The programme develops through the year from advanced fundamental topics and research tools and techniques in electrical power engineering, to specialist courses on emerging technologies and advanced numerical methods for power engineering problems, and culminates in the summer dissertation project where the acquired skills in various areas are put into practice in application to an actual power engineering problem.

Governments worldwide are putting in place plans to decarbonise and modernise their electricity sector. A transition to a green economy will require a highly skilled workforce led by electrical power engineers with a solid academic background, an appreciation of the trajectory of the industry and an understanding of the challenges and implications brought about by the introduction of new power technologies.
According to the Institution for Engineering & Technology (IET): “The business of managing and distributing power in the UK is beginning to undergo revolutionary changes and [power] engineers are the people who will play a pivotal role in keeping the lights on”. This also holds true in many other developed and developing countries in the world.
Power engineers are employed in public/governmental organisations as well as in the private sector and cover areas spanning from generation, to conversion and transmission of electrical power, design and manufacturing of power components and systems, and energy policy and commerce. In the UK, experienced, chartered power engineers can earn around £45,000 a year on average*.
The programme will run in a close association with other activities within the broader Electrical Engineering programme within the School, including networking events, industrial presentations and seminars. It will benefit from the current strong connections with industry (coordinated by the Student Industry Liaison Manager, and existing research associations and consortia (such as the EPSRC Centre for Energy Systems Integration).
The MSc Civil Engineering course is ideal for those wishing to switch to a career in civil engineering or graduates looking to advance their career towards Chartered Engineer status. The flexible course offers two professional pathways, and the option to carry out a research project while undertaking an industrial placement.
This degree will provide you with a sound understanding of civil engineering design and applications through a series of core and specialist modules in areas covering coastal and maritime engineering, hydraulics, the environment, infrastructure, transport and management. Our modules reflect our internationally-renowned research expertise in these fields. You will be involved in a research project, enabling you to apply the knowledge and transferable skills developed during the programme. The degree includes two pathways: (i) a conventional Masters programme for students with a first degree in civil engineering and (ii) a conversion pathway aimed at numerate non-civil engineering graduates.
The full-time course is taught by leading researchers in this field. You will learn to apply the latest statistical analysis tools. You also have the opportunity to study advanced modules in coastal, environmental, infrastructure and transport engineering.
The year is divided into two semesters. Each semester, you will select from a range of specialist modules, including earthquake engineering and groundwater hydrology and contamination. You also have the option to develop your knowledge of project economics, and law and contracts.
Practical sessions form a large part of the course. You will have access to specialist facilities, including heavy structures, hydraulics and geotechnical laboratories. You will also complete a final research project to evolve your critical-thinking and technical expertise.
We offer two pathways - a conversion pathway for non-Civil Engineering graduates wishing to convert their degree, and a standard pathway for those who already have a first degree in Civil Engineering; both pathways undertake a research project. Renewable energy engineering is in high demand globally as we find alternate methods of energy harvesting to meet our future energy needs and future proof our reliance on hydrocarbons as much as it is possible to do. Considerable innovation and improvements are continuous within this field as it is by no means at a stage where society can rely on it to fuel all needs. The sector is interdisciplinary and this programme provides you with a wide range of very useful skills and knowledge to problem solve and progress current renewables and work towards innovation whether that is in a renewables company or as a start up.
You study electrical and electronic engineering pertinent to smart grid, sensing energy use, developing energy harvesting techniques, and renewable energy exchange, plus ability to harvest energy from all of our natural resources including wind, solar, hydro, marine, geothermal, biomass and other newly developing areas.Renewables is definitely an employable sector as governments are now challenged by finite resources coming from traditional areas, climate change and societal concerns about how we harvest energy in the future and our ability to survive climatic issues, population increase and manage work and life.

You also have the opportunity to use the latest high-tech non-destructive testing equipment including flexible endoscopes, borescopes and thermal imaging cameras for detecting heat loss – all of which you can use in practical projects and the dissertation module.
You benefit from a range of teaching, learning and assessment techniques. Intensive study weeks allow you to work on complex, professional briefs with other students in multi-disciplinary practice. The postgraduate construction, building and surveying courses were first established with the MSc Property Appraisal and Management in 1991 with many of our former students now in senior positions throughout the profession.
