The Master Program offers a solid base and enables graduates to deal with challenges in this field. Environmental issues have also become increasingly important and prominent in the field of project management. What is the Master of Space Studies all about?

The Master of Space Studies programme is designed to prepare scientists to respond to a myriad of challenges and opportunities. In addition to coursework in space sciences, the curriculum is enriched by a Master's thesis and a series of guest lecturers from international, national and regional institutions.

This is an advanced Master's programme and can be followed on a full-time or part-time basis.

Structure

The programme is conceived as an advanced master’s programme and as such it requires applicants to have successfully completedan initial master’s programme in either the humanities and social sciences, exact sciences and technology or biomedical sciences.

  • The interdisciplinary nature of the programme is expressed by the common core of 25 ECTS in introductory coursework. These courses are mandatory for every student. They acquaint the student with the different aspects that together form the foundation of space-related activities. The backgrounds of the students in programme are diverse, but all students have the ability to transfer knowledge across disciplines.
  • Depending on their background and interests, students have the opportunity to deepen their knowledge through more domain-specific optional courses, for a total of 20 ECTS, covering the domains of (A) Space Law, Policy, Business and Management, (B) Space Sciences and (C) Space Technology and Applications, with the possibility to combine the latter two. 
  • For the master’s thesis (15 ECTS), students are embedded in a research team of one of the organising universities, or in an external institute, organisation or industrial company, in which case an academic supervisor is assigned as the coordinator of the project. The master’s thesis is the final section of the interdisciplinary programme, in which the acquired knowledge and abilities are applied to a complex and concrete project.

Department

The mission of the Department of Physics and Astronomy is exploring, understanding and modelling physical realities using mathematical, computational, experimental and observational techniques. Fifteen teams perform research at an international level. Publication of research results in leading journals and attracting top-level scientists are priorities for the department.

New physics and innovation in the development of new techniques are important aspects of our mission. The interaction with industry (consulting, patents...) and society (science popularisation) are additional points of interest. Furthermore, the department is responsible for teaching basic physics courses in several study programmes.

Learning Outcomes

After the completion of the programme, students will have attained the following learning outcomes:

The Master in International Marketing Management (MIMM) provides a broad learning and training experience that helps students enter in the job market. The program aims at preparing students for a successful career in international marketing management, whether in a large multinational firm, a smaller company, or their own business.

The Master is characterized by active learning and student interaction, aimed at developing individual skills of analysis and decision-making. In particular, the traditional teaching methods will be integrated by the presence of academics of international standing and managers, case discussions, role playing, individual group projects and seminars.

Learning objectives

The Master aims at developing knowledge, competences and abilities in order to analyze the international markets and to assume managerial, commercial and marketing responsibilities. EMARO+ is an integrated Masters course conducted by: Ecole Centrale de Nantes (France), Warsaw University of Technology (Poland), the University of Genoa (Italy), and Jaume I University (Spain).

It has been designed and accepted in the framework of the European Union ERASMUS-MUNDUS programme (ERASMUS+ H2020).

It has 7 associated partners: two Asian Institutions (KEIO University - Japan, SJTU - China) and five industrial partners (IRT Jules Verne - France, Airbus Group Innovations - France), BA Systemes - France, Robotnik - Spain, and SIIT - Italy).

The programme of study lasts two academic years (120 ECTS) split into four equally loaded semesters. The student has to spend the first two semesters in one European institution and the second two semesters in another European institution. Another mobility during the fourth semester to an Asian partner or to an industrial partner is possible.

The language of instruction is English, but local language and culture courses of the hosting countries are included in the programme of study. The aim of the first two semesters is to provide the students with a solid interdisciplinary background across the main areas of robotics (Cognition, Action, Perception). During the third semester, depending on the host institution, the student will deal with one or more of the following sectors: industrial robot systems, service robots (domestic, health, rehabilitation, leisure), intelligent vehicules and security robots. The fourth semester is dedicated to the Masters Thesis. The student carries out his/her research work under the joint supervision of two advisors from two different consortium institutions.

Students that graduate from the EMARO masters course obtain two masters degrees from the European institutions where they studied. The obtained degrees are officially recognised and give full access to PhD study programmes.

The Consortium delivers a Diploma supplement describing the nature, level, context, content and status of the studies that were pursued and successfully completed by the student.

The Masters is designed to promote a high-quality educational offer in the area of advanced and intelligent robotics. After graduation the students will have mastered the different areas of robotics (Mathematical modeling, Control Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical design) in order to be able to deal with Robotics systems as a whole rather than just to concentrate on one particular area.

Although the EMARO+ programme is applied primarily within the context of robotic systems, the concepts covered can be applied to a much wider range of other engineering and economical systems. With this comprehensive education in the field of renewable energy you acquire knowledge and competence for the design of plants for the use of renewable energy sources from an economic and legal point-of-view, the operation of plants and the future assessment of environmental, technical and economic developments of renewable energy systems.

The course is designed to ensure high standards in the professional practice of architecture and to give you the opportunity to extend your area of competence. It focuses on the design process but tempers this concern with the knowledge and experience needed for ideas to become reality in a way that is ethical, economical, efficient and legal.

Students are recruited from a wide range of design professions in the construction industry, and the teaching will examine critical events in your own work experience, that of other course members and of the profession at large. The course will also encourage you to feel confident with higher levels of professional responsibility. Our students have had considerable successes in the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) President's medals.

You'll benefit from the course's central London location and its close proximity to its internationally renowned creative and industry hubs. The School's extensive networks encourage graduates of the course to expand their knowledge and skills through lectures, events and careers advice, leaving them with excellent career prospects.

The course is assessed in four ways. There are three elements of coursework and documentation related to practical experience and its assimilation, in the form of a case study, a completed RIBA Practical Training Record or its equivalent and a critical self-evaluation. The fourth part of the assessment consists of two unseen examinations. A final viva voce examination assesses all four elements in a summative context.

Moving to one campus

Between 2016 and 2020 we're investing £125 million in the London Metropolitan University campus, moving all of our activity to our current Holloway campus in Islington, north London. This will mean the teaching location of some courses will change over time.

Whether you will be affected will depend on the duration of your course, when you start and your mode of study. The earliest moves affecting new students will be in September 2017. This may mean you begin your course at one location, but over the duration of the course you are relocated to one of our other campuses. Our intention is that no full-time student will change campus more than once during a course of typical duration.

About the course

The course is designed to cater for local and international professionals within the industry who wish to gain the necessary qualifications and theoretical awareness to enabling you to advance your careers or operations. It will also appeal to recent international and home graduates who wish to acquire the specialist knowledge and qualifications necessary in order to manage tourism operations.

This programme has a core set of modules, with all of the functional business management modules delivered in Stage 1: People Management and Development, Decision Making for Managers (Finance and Accounting) and International Tourism Marketing. In addition, a Research Method module is designed to clearly contextualising research in Tourism, Hospitality and Event Management. In doing so, this will enable the students to benefit from the growing research expertise of the subject group to assure a sound transition to Stage 2 where students will be required to evolve understanding into new spheres or deploy knowledge in more practical context.

At stage 2, there are two core modules 'Contemporary Themes: Tourism/Hospitality/Event Management provides students with opportunity to explore current trends and issues affecting an industry of their interest. The other core module is 'Live Project: Tourism/ Hospitality/Event Management' is designed to provide students with an insight into the nature of tourism, hospitality and event organisations through immersion in live project research. Students are also given the flexibility to create their curriculum by choosing three out of five optional modules. 'Project Management' and 'Residential Field Trip' modules are created to enhance practical skills at networking and applying theories to practice. The 'Ethical Dimensions of Tourism' and 'Crisis and Risk Management in Events' and 'Urban Regeneration' are developed to address the increasing concern for businesses in the areas of ethics and crisis management.

At Stage 3, students complete a research dissertation in the specialist area you have chosen. This provides the opportunity for you to apply your knowledge and evaluate the complex nature, structure and functional areas of the tourism, hospitality and event industries, and their global trends and implications in different geographical, economical and socio-cultural contexts.

This course provides a contemporary, critical, and international programme of study which guides students through the main debates, research, and techniques of the area of study. It provides the students with qualities, skills and qualifications thereby enhancing their employment opportunities and their career advancement. We are preparing graduates for successful careers in the hospitality, recreation or tourism industries or in an associated government agency with an international, national or local focus. Graduates from the programme are employed by international hotel chains (Four Seasons Hotel, Marriott Hotels, Sheraton Hotels, The Ritz Carlton, Starwood Hotel Group) in China, India Macau, Thailand and Great Britain, as well as working for independent hotels and Event Management companies in Great Britain. Teaching methods

We offer a varied programme of teaching that includes facilitated seminars, practical workshops, projects for companies, web-based learning, case study analysis and traditional lectures. Structure

The course consists of approximately ten to fifteen taught modules and an individual research project.

In addition to management, communication, team work and research skills, each student will attain at least the following outcomes from this degree course:

- Demonstrate a working knowledge and critical awareness of gas turbine performance, analysis techniques, component design and associated technologies

Individual Project
You are required to submit a written thesis describing an individual research project carried out during the course. Many individual research projects have been carried out with industrial sponsorship, and have often resulted in publication in international journals and symposium papers. This thesis is examined orally in September in the presence of an external examiner.

Assessment

The final assessment is based on two components of equal weight; the taught modules (50%) and the individual research project (50%). Assessment is by examinations, assignments, presentations and thesis.

You’ll study

The programme consists of three components:

You’ll be part of a group of three to five people in ‘consultant teams’ for 10 weeks addressing a practical engineering problem. You’ll then have the opportunity to present the report to a panel of industrial experts.

This project will enhance your team working and communication skills. It also provides valuable access to industrial contacts.

It'll give you a good understanding of all aspects of research work. In addition, the technological study must be accompanied by a survey of the relevance and applicability of the findings to the maritime industries at large.

You'll learn efficient ways to gather information, to distribute workload and to delegate amongst the group, to analyse their results and to appreciate the broader implications of the whole project. In-depth technological studies will be accompanied by increasingly important competence in managerial skills, quality assurance and a sound appreciation of the economic, political, social and environmental issues crucial to professional success.

- Individual project (MSc only)
MSc students will take on an individual dissertation on a topic of their own interest. The aim of the individual project is to develop your research skills and to combine many of the aspects learned from other modules within a specific topic. This'll be achieved by you carrying out work into a particular topic relating to your chosen theme and preparing a dissertation.

Learning & teaching

There are two teaching periods (semesters) of 12 weeks each. Some of the second semester subjects are taught over eight weeks. This is so that you can devote as much time as possible to your individual project work.

Course modules are delivered in the form of formal lectures supported with tutorials and laboratory experiments.

Guest lectures

During term time, we arrange weekly seminars in which leaders and pioneers of the maritime, oil and gas and marine renewables industries visit the department and present to students. This is a great way of supplementing your education with the latest developments and gaining industry contacts for your future career.

Industrial visits are also made to a variety of companies.

Assessment

There are two types of method for module assessment. One is course work assessment only, the other is exam assessment. For examined modules the final assessment mark consists of 30-40% course work marks and 60-70% exam marks.
