The emphasis of this Masters' programme is on the three key themes within eCommerce – hardware, software and business considerations.

Students will undertake a range of tasks associated with eCommerce in organisations, and will enjoy developing sophisticated solutions to eCommerce problems.

Course Overview

e-Commerce is now a mature industry in the UK and covers a wide range of skills. As well as technical skills, this area also covers marketing, advertising, sales order processing and customer service.

This programme is aimed at providing graduates with the knowledge and skills to enable them to satisfy the demands of employers by developing and enhancing their use of ICT, particularly in the area of eCommerce. This programme has a strong focus on data analysis and other factors that affect eCommerce such as law, marketing/social media, privacy, intellectual property, etc. Graduates will use their expertise to manage teams that design, implement, test and maintain innovative eCommerce based solutions in contemporary organisations.

Modules

Part 1:
-Data Mining (20 credits)
-Leadership and Management (20 credits)
-Managing Information Systems and Project (20 credits)
-Marketing and Web Analytics (20 credits)
-Research Methods and Data Analysis (20 credits)
-Web Technologies for e-Commerce (20 credits)

Part 2:
-Major Project (60 credits)

Key Features

This MSc programme is aimed at providing graduates with the knowledge and skills to enable them to satisfy the demands of employers developing and enhancing their use of ICT, particularly in the area of e-Commerce. It aims to enable graduates to improve their employment prospects and enhance their career development.

This programme is involved in areas of established, new and rapidly changing technologies. These technologies are also being introduced into areas where the existing workforce needs to be retrained and enhanced to take advantage of the opportunities arising, for example, the use of the Internet in developing and maintaining supply chains. The rapid advances, particularly in computer technology, over recent years have led to a demand from a wide range of employers for graduates with the knowledge and skills provided by this programme.

Assessment

Student work is assessed through a combination of coursework, lab based practical examinations and written examinations. The final mark for some modules may include one or more pieces of coursework set and completed during the module. Project work is assessed by a written report and oral presentation.

Career Opportunities

eCommerce continues to grow nationally and internationally. Graduates of this programme should be well placed to play a role in that expansion.

Although the UK already has a significant proportion of industries which rely on eCommerce, there remains a shortage of people with the relevant technical knowledge and skills to work in the industry. The skills and knowledge gained throughout the programme will prepare students for both employment within the eCommerce industry and within the computing area on a wider perspective.

The program is designed to allow the graduate of MSc eCommerce to work in a number of different roles. Graduates may seek roles on the business side of eCommerce, for example in marketing, or as an advisor to an eCommerce company. Other graduates may seek roles in software development. eCommerce is popular and is growing nationally and internationally. Graduates of this programme should be well placed to play a role in that expansion.

It is expected that graduates would seek positions such as:
-Web Designer
-Usability consultant
-e-Commerce advisor
-Marketing consultant
-Project manager

About the course

Data is being collected at an unprecedented speed and scale – but 'big data' is of little use without 'big insight'. The skills required to develop such insight are in short supply and the shortage of skilled workers in the data analytics market is cited as a key barrier.

The Data Science and Analytics MSc programme provides these skills, combining a strong academic programme with hands-on experience of leading commercial technology – and the chance to gain industry certification.

You will develop both your critical awareness of the state-of-the-art in data science and the practical skills that help you apply data science more effectively in the business, science and social world.

The programme is run in conjunction with SAS, a market leader in business analytics software and services, and the largest independent vendor in the business intelligence market.

Brunel's programme is unique in being the only current MSc programme that is fully integrated with SAS, providing the SAS base certification.

Aims

The Harvard Business Review calls data science the “sexiest job of the 21st century” – with demand for graduates with SAS skills rapidly rising across financial, retail and government sectors. Data science is now in vogue.

From government, social networks and ecommerce sites to sensors, smart meters and mobile networks, data is being collected at an unprecedented speed and scale – creating an expanding job market for qualified data analysts.

The practical aspects of many of the modules will allow you to gain hands-on experience of several commercial SAS tools (e.g. SAS BASE, Enterprise Guide, Enterprise Miner and Visual Analytics). This experience is designed, in part, to develop skills in preparation for the SAS certification part of the programme.

By the end of the course you should be able to:

Comprehend the key concepts and nuances of the disciplines that need to be synthesised for effective data science.
Demonstrate a critical understanding of the challenges and issues arising from taking heterogeneous data at volume and scale, understanding what it represents and turning that understanding into insight for business, scientific or social innovation (i.e. data science).
Develop a practical understanding of the skills, tools and techniques necessary for the effective application of data science.
Apply a practical understanding of data science to problems in social, business and scientific domains.
Evaluate the effectiveness of applied data science in relation to the issues addressed.

Course Content

Your studies on the course will cover the modules listed below. The practical aspects of many of the modules will allow you to gain hands-on experience of several commercial SAS tools (e.g. SAS BASE, Enterprise Guide, Enterprise Miner and Visual Analytics). That experience is designed, in part, to develop skills for the SAS certification that partners the programme.

Typical Modules:

Digital Innovation
Quantitative Data Analysis
High Performance Computational Infrastructures
Systems Project Management
Big Data Analytics
Research Methods
Data Visualisation
Learning Development Project
Dissertation

Special Features

INSTITUTE FOR DIPLOMACY AND INTERNATIONAL GOVERNANCE

Loughborough will be the first University to offer this opportunity to develop the future leaders and forward thinkers in government administration in the UK and beyond. The programme will be run jointly with Loughborough’s reputable Institute for Digital Technologies.

Students enrolled on this programme will be introduced to the practice, procedures and dynamics of diplomacy, as well as the relevance of the emerging technologies to the effective functioning of the nation state, including the economy, public services and cyber security. They will have the opportunity to engage with the very latest cyber security principles, practices, tools, and techniques through practical application, analysing and evaluating problems and responding to challenges in real time; to examine the internet as a way of democratising diplomacy and government and the proliferation of influence on policy through ICT concerning governments, the media, NGOs, Non-State Actors, and the Citizenry.

Programme Aims

-To enable students to critically analyse the conceptual complexities of the digital state as an emerging concept.
-To enable students to evaluate the challenges in international relations, diplomacy, global economy and security facing governments and global governance structures brought about by the digital state.
-To encourage critical analysis of the challenges in cyber security faced by government, industry and society, and foster a creative approach to addressing those challenges in the most effective way.
-To enhance students’ knowledge and develop their expertise in utilising both cyber-security and big data analytics techniques to better analyse and evaluate problems and respond to challenges with practical applications in real time.
-To enable students to develop skills essential to the conduct of diplomacy, state management, the cyber security industries and related businesses, such as ICT, ecommerce, and governmental organisations using action-based learning.
-To empower students to engage perceptively and creatively with the concepts of open government, transparency, participation and public accountability.
