Master's specialisation in Chemistry for Life

This specialisation involves studying the design and synthesis of complex molecular systems, and addressing challenging problems, such as wound healing and drug delivery. At the interface of biology and chemistry you will get a solid foundation in modern synthetic organic chemistry, physical organic chemistry and chemical biology. This multidisciplinary knowledge is essential for industries of the future, where chemistry and the life sciences become more and more intertwined. As a Chemistry for Life Master's student you will obtain the knowledge and skills you need to develop the next generation of medicines.

Programme courses

The Master’s specialisation in Chemistry for Life is taught at the Faculty of Science. It has a course load of 120 EC* (two years). The track consists of:

Societal Master's tracks

The workload of an academic year is equivalent to 60 European credits (EC), where 1 EC point is 28 hours of study. This system allows you to check whether the courses you have followed in a particular year (along with other activities that earn credits) meet the European requirements.

Proficiency in English

In order to take part in the programme, you need to have fluency in English, both written and spoken. Non-native speakers of English without a Dutch Bachelor’s degree or VWO diploma need one of the following:

- TOEFL score of ≥575 (paper based) or ≥90 (internet based);

- An IELTS score of ≥6.5;

- Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English (CAE) or Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE), with a mark of C or higher

Career prospects

Career perpectives of chemical biologists are very broad: our graduates work in the pharmaceutical, biotech and life sciences industries. High tech start-ups are also an option. There are numerous opportunities for PhD positions, including at the national Graduate School in Chemical Biology.

We stimulate our Master's students to develop a critical mind and a problem solving attitude. Some of them will become the next generation of top scientists, all of them will have a job within a few months after graduation:

- 40% become PhD students at a university

- 60% work at a research institute, in the (bio)chemical industry or in one of our spin-off companies

- A small proportion do not work in science but for instance as a policymaker at a governmental organisation.

Our research in this field

Teachers and researchers at Radboud University are very open and approachable for students, and the student-teacher ratio is low. The Master's specialisation in Gender Equality, Diversity and Inclusion in Politics introduces you not only to issues and ongoing debates in the field of gender and diversity studies in organisations and politics, but also offers the opportunity to familiarize yourself with the state of the art in the field and to acquire knowledge of different policy practices related to it and their gendered implications. It offers you the knowledge and skills needed to understand the moral reasons - social justice, fairness and anti-discrimination - and the business reasons - legitimacy and performance - for addressing gender equality, diversity and inclusion through, among others, gender mainstreaming strategies. You learn to apply academic theories to real life questions and dilemmas within organisations and society, to reflect upon the normative dimensions of debates, to design workable solutions to change organisations and to advice policy makers and management teams.

Interdisciplinary perspective

As a GEP student you will be offered an interdisciplinary education, leading to the only Master’s Degree (MSc) in Political Science with a specialisation in gender equality, diversity and inclusion in the Netherlands. The programme focuses on the role and function of gender and diversity in society, with a particular emphasis on underlying power processes in politics and society. You will study how organisations produce different structural inequalities (regarding gender, ethnicity, sexuality, class, age, disability), and how these inequalities intersect and manifest themselves in different practices. At the same time as the programme addresses questions related to the role culture, identity, leadership, and politics play in the (re-)production of gender inequalities, it also assesses the influence and strategies of different stakeholders as well as change agents in gender mainstreaming and transforming organisations. Organisations today have to deal with an increasingly heterogeneous workforce, due to developments such as migration, emancipation, ageing, and international cooperation. The inclusion of men and women, older and younger colleagues, people from different ethnic backgrounds, religions, various educational backgrounds and different sexual orientations has become an issue for employees and managers in modern organisations. To attract and retain a diverse workforce, to realize equal opportunities for all, and to create an inclusive organisation in which people’s needs for uniqueness and belongingness are met, are key challenges for organisations. In the Master's specialisation in Gender Equality, Diversity and Inclusion in Management, we focus on the role and function of gender and diversity in the workplace, connecting what happens in organisations to the underlying power processes in politics and society. About MathMods

MathMods is a 2-year Joint MSc programme which can be taken in 5 EU universities: University of L’Aquila in Italy (UAQ), Vienna University of Technology in Austria (TUW), Autonomous University of Barcelona in Spain (UAB), Hamburg University of Technology (TUHH) & University of Hamburg in Germany (UHH), and University of Nice - Sophia Antipolis in France (UNS).

What makes MathMods so special is its peculiar mobility scheme, that is the fact that our students will be spending their postgrad years in two or even three different European countries. You'll be indeed studying in central Italy for your first semester, then move to Austria or Germany for the second term, and finally move again to 1 of our 5 partners for your second year, based on the mobility path you'll be assigned. 

Upon graduation students will be awarded a Joint Master's degree (or double, depending on where they spend their Year2).

Since its establishement in 2008 MathMods was funded by the EU Commission firstly through the Erasmus Mundus programme action 1 A (project no. 2008-0100), and later through the Erasmus+ Key Action 1 programme, project no. 2013-0227. We're currently applying for the Erasmus+ Call for Proposals 2018 to continue awarding Erasmus Munuds scholarships to our future generations. Programme Structure

Semester 1 focuses on Theory and is to be spend in L'Aquila (Italy)

Semester 2 focuses on Numerics and can be taken in Vienna (Austria) or Hamburg (Germany).

Then for Year2 each partner institution offers a specific curriculum or study path:

Semester4 is dedicated to thesis work.

Aims

Mathematical modelling refers to the use of mathematics and related computational tools to bring real-world, challenging and important socio-economic and industrial problems into a form simple enough so that a good solution can be found in a reasonable time, while keeping the relevant features of the problem. Constructing models requires knowledge of enough mathematical theory, methods of solution which are really effective and efficient, computational tools at hand to do it, some knowledge of the field of application, and communicative skills to understand the important elements from experts in that field. Our master's programme tries to put together all these elements to produce professionals able to work in different relevant fields with the highest intellectual level and state-of-the-art tools.

Effective modelling and simulation is an art that require a lot of practice, so that problem solving, project development and team work are aspects that should be highlighted in any training programme, as our Consortium knows perfectly. On the other hand, the abstraction behind the specific application is necessary to realise that the same base tools can be applied, with the needed changes, to very different situations in various engineering fields.

Language

The language of the whole course is exclusively English at each of our five universities. Students must also attend (and acquire the relating credits of) a course of basic Italian language (first semester) and German language (second semester). Students will also have the opportunity to attend local language courses during their second year (spent at one of the five partners).

Employability

The area of applied mathematics on which this project is focused is a fundamental scientific field for a number of key technologies and sciences. The areas of the proposed tracks connect very well with various branches of the European high-tech industry, and one of the goals of the project is to enhance these connections by means of the release of well prepared professionals and researchers.

Career opportunities for graduates will typically arise in research and development laboratories, especially those defining and testing numerical models and procedures, either working for an specific sector or with a broader scope. Also, in big or medium size enterprises possessing their own research department or a division with an orientation towards research, in public or privately held Sector Technology Centres, and at computing centres involved in data processing or the creation of numerical codes for the industry.

Academic opportunities

The graduates will be able to apply successfully for PhD programmes if they wish so, as has happened for the three already completed cycles. In all the countries of the Consortium members, the programme has been validated as enabling the holder of the MSc degree to enter a local PhD programme. A good percentage of our students seem indeed to prefer pursuing a PhD before going to the industry or returning to their countries of origin. The intended level of the programme, together with the initial selection of the students, allows affirming that most of them could follow a successful academic career, after a suitable PhD.

Course structure

here are two start dates for the International Commercial Law LLM by distance learning in each academic year - 1 April and 1 October. Although students are allowed up to a maximum of five years to complete the course, it is possible to complete six modules per academic year. However, the flexible nature of the programmes means that you can work at your own pace through the modules. Each of the twelve modules is worth 10 credits and the dissertation is worth 60 credits. To gain the LLM qualification you will be required to complete 180 credits worth of study – 120 from taught modules and 60 from the dissertation. It will be possible to complete 60 credits (six modules) to gain a Postgraduate certificate recognising your achievement. On completion of all twelve modules but in the absence of the dissertation, you will be eligible for a Postgraduate Diploma in law. You can also choose to study individual modules to enhance your knowledge in a particular area. All the modules are assessed by an assignment of up to 5000 words.

The dissertation provides you with an excellent opportunity to study an aspect of the law in your chosen area of study which is of particular interest to you. Students often, but not exclusively, select project topics which have a direct bearing on their professional lives. The standard of the work produced is very high indeed and several of our students have graduated with distinction.

Attendance at the biennial residential weekends is highly recommended. The programme of lectures, seminars and workshops at the residential school both stimulates and encourages, as well as providing an invaluable opportunity for debate and discussion with staff, visiting lecturers and fellow students.

Assessment

You are guided through each of the LLMs by a module handbook containing notes, reading lists and self-assessment questions. All the documents on the reading lists are provided either electronically through the University’s electronic resources, by direct links to the worldwide web, as digitised documents on Blackboard (the University’s on-line learning/teaching facility) or, exceptionally, as hard copy. Core text books are issued on loan with the module handbook and returned with the module assignment. Staff-student interchange is facilitated by coursework materials, telephone contact, email and written responses to coursework submissions.

Combining both theoretical and practical perspectives, the subject matter covers the growth areas of the future as well as subjects and skills of traditional importance. Course content is specified in Human and Veterinary Directives 2001/83/EC and 2001/82/EC. Participants receive nine module books in each year of the course. The general areas covered are: pharmaceutical, medicinal and analytical chemistry; pharmaceutical processing and drug action, uses and assessment. Participants must also undertake a number of manufacturing facility visits. The taught component (Postgraduate Diploma) is recognised by the Irish Medicines Board as fulfilling the educational requirements related to registration as a Qualified Person (Note: applicants with a three-year primary degree must qualify with a M.Sc. to fulfil the educational requirements related to registration as a Qualified Person). The world loves American culture, but is deeply distrustful of American power and politics. At Radboud University, we offer critical insights into what America means. Our Master's program gives students the opportunity to become experts in the concept of ‘America' in a variety of fields: US history, literature, culture (including popular culture, film, theatre, political history, foreign policy, constitutional law, religion and social science. Radboud University's programme distinguishes itself from other's by emphasizing the cultural and political relations between the United States, its neighbours and Europe.

The open classroom experience is what teachers and researches of the Master`s program “North American Studies” want to create for their students. For an example of the experience, in the project “Politics & Culture of Liberation” students and teachers worked closely with the National Liberation Museum in Groesbeek, the Regional Archive in Nijmegen and the National Archives in Washington, D.C. The project resulted in an exhibition on the impact of American culture on Europe and the Transatlantic World. America's cultural icons are the world's cultural icons. Our program allows students to critically explore the significance of American culture in countries around the globe. With the so-called ‘transnational turn', American Studies increasingly looks beyond national borders. In this program you will explore the politics, culture and society of the United States within, outside and at its borders. Central themes are the exchange of cultural and political ideas between North America and Europe, and related issues in the field of Americanisation, globalisation, cultural mobility and political and cultural imperialism.

Study American issues with an interdisciplinary view

True to the tradition of American Studies, our program teaches students to approach issues from different angles and to think in multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary ways. We also offer excellent internships, thanks to our global network. Furthermore, we are the only university in the Netherlands to teach oral communication skills in the American language throughout our Bachelor's program, so that students who go on to study for a Master's degree have near-native language abilities.

Within the program in North America Studies, you can choose from the following two specialisations. Each specialisation comprises of a one-year, 60 EC program including a 20 EC Master's thesis project. Literature and Cultures of North America in International Perspective

All students enrolled in this Master's specialisation take compulsory foundational courses. In addition, students take a compulsory Master's Thesis Colloquium and participate in Master's Thesis Workshops to help them structure their Master's Thesis research and support their writing process. There is an elective space in the specialisation to allow students to engage in an internship or engage in further courses. Options for elective courses include courses on Native Americans, African-American literature and the American borderlands.

Transnational America: Politics, Culture and Society

If you follow this specialisation, you will take several obligatory foundation courses. In addition, students take a compulsory Master's Thesis Colloquium and participate in Master's Thesis Workshops to help them structure their Master's Thesis research and support their writing process. There is a small elective space in the specialisation to allow students to engage in an internship or engage in further courses. Options for elective courses include a special course on the Beat Generation, one of America's most influential avant-garde movements; Native Americans; African-American Literature and Culture; American Borders: Contact Conflict and Exchange; or American Constitutional Law (taught in Dutch).

Multidisciplinary approach

At Radboud University, we believe that a multidisciplinary approach is necessary to gain the best understanding of human behaviour. We combine knowledge and research methods from the fields of psychology, educational sciences and communication science. These disciplines are not taught separately but instead are brought together in most of our courses, making our approach unique.

Half of the programme consists of research experience. There are many issues you could tackle and a large research faculty you could work with. Our approach to this field

The staff of the Behavioural Science Institute at Radboud University originate from the fields of psychology, educational sciences and communication science. Together they tackle issues regarding human behaviour. We believe that in order to fully understand human behaviour you need to use knowledge from all these fields together instead of separately. For example, looking at a psychological issue from a communication perspective could offer new and valuable insights that will lead to better diagnosis or interventions.

At Radboud University we will not just teach you existing research methods in the different fields. You will also learn to look beyond conventions and combine or adjust methods from other disciplines to enable you to do research that will answer your questions. Our research in this field

More than half of the Master’s programme in Behavioural Science consists of research. In the first year you’ll do a minor project in which you choose from a list research themes that are provided by staff members or PhD students.

In the second year, you’ll do a major project in the form of a nine month internship which provides you with the experience - and data - needed to write your Master’s thesis. Most internships are carried out within the Behavioural Science Institute (BSI), working closely with colleagues, many of whom are internationally renowned researchers. However, there is also the option to arrange an internship abroad.

To broaden your scope, we expect you to choose different research themes for the minor and major projects, preferably in different groups within the BSI.

Besides the necessary theoretical knowledge about behavioural science and training in advanced quantitative data analysis, this programme also offers courses (7 EC in total) that will teach you additional skills that every researcher needs: to understand the ethics of research, to understand the process of academic publishing and grant proposals, and to comment on papers and proposals of others. This interdisciplinary programme is designed to provide an opportunity to explore the interplay between scientific knowledge and law. You may take courses that address the international legal response to the growing number of pressures on the global environment, and complement these by studying a variety of courses designed to give an introduction to physical and/or biological sciences.

Climate change, acid rain, biodiversity conservation, species extinction, contaminated land - these are but a few of the environmental issues that constitute headline news today. Modules offered by the School of Law are designed to give a wider understanding of EC and international law perspectives on environmental problems that frequently can only be addressed through regional or international regulation. How has international environmental law evolved historically? Who are the main actors in the field? What key principles underpin regulation? What do we mean by the pursuit of “sustainable development”? How is the law in this area enforced?

Treaty regimes explored include those relating to acid deposition, climate change, ozone layer depletion, nuclear contamination and freshwater pollution. In addition, an insight will be given to the various treaty regimes that seek to address the continuing pressures on the world’s biodiversity. For example, how is commercial whaling now regulated? What system is in place to regulate trade in endangered species? What of the protection of wetlands, Antarctica, world heritage and of migratory species?

The scientific element of the programme is designed to provide a background in biological and/or physical sciences, and also an understanding of relevant mathematical and computer science to facilitate a quantitative understanding of environmental issues.

Addressing these issues to ensure a clean and healthy environment for the enjoyment of future generations is one of the greatest challenges for environmental science and law.
