Degree information

This MSc provides a sound programme in human nutrition covering practical approaches, research methods and nutrition in the general population and in disease states. Eating disorders are presented using different teaching methods with an extensive series of seminars, tutorial and clinical attachments at St Ann's, Great Ormond Street and the Royal Free London Hospitals. Students will also undertake a significant research project.

Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits. The programme consists of eight core modules (120 credits), and a research dissertation (60 credits). A Postgraduate Diploma (120 credits) is offered. A Postgraduate Certificate (60 credits) is offered. There are no optional modules for this programme.

All MSc students undertake an independent research project which culminates in a dissertation of between 10,000-12,000 words.

Teaching and learning
The programme is delivered through a combination of seminars, lectures, laboratory work, and practicals. Assessment is through examination, presentations, essays, practical reports and the dissertation.

Careers

This programme will provide specialist graduate training for health professionals already working in the eating disorders field or prepare students for a career in a clinical eating disorders setting or an academic setting.

Eating Disorders and Clinical Nutrition is a recently established MSc, therefore no information on graduate destinations is currently available. However, as an indication, graduates of the Clinical and Public Health Nutrition MSc have taken up positions as dieticians, nutritionists, clinicians or undertaken further PhD studies.

Employability
This degree will give graduates a clear advantage when applying for clinical and research positions in units in which children, adolescents or adults with eating disorders are assessed, treated and recruited into research programmes. It is particularly relevant for individuals wishing to apply for senior positions in these units, as well as graduates who aspire to studying for a doctorate in the eating disorders field. Surveys have shown that eating disorder services are continuing to develop in all parts of the country, providing substantial opportunities for employment in this burgeoning field.

Ursula has a significant professional background in dietetics and eating disorders in both public and private settings. She currently co-runs her own private practice clinic in Leeds, treating clients with a range of eating difficulties. With an MSc in Nutrition and Dietetics as well as a Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education, she is a passionate and experienced academic who has contributed research papers to a number of professional conferences and journals.

Health psychology is an exciting and growing branch of psychology that applies psychological theory and research to behaviours and beliefs related to health and illness.

Health psychologists’ interests are firmly in line with government health agendas, and include the promotion of positive health behaviours in adults and children; reducing obesity, binge drinking, smoking and stress; and increasing psychological wellbeing.

The route to Chartered Psychologist status is through the attainment of an accredited MSc Health Psychology (stage 1 training), followed by supervised professional practice (stage 2 training).

USW’s MSc Health Psychology is accredited by the British Psychological Society (BPS) as providing students with the knowledge and skills required for Stage 1 of your training in qualifying as a Chartered Psychologist and practitioner health psychologist.

The MSc Health Psychology is taught by registered practitioner health psychologists (who are also BPS Chartered) with many years of specialist teaching, research and clinical experience in a range of areas of health psychology. Specialist practitioners contribute a contemporary perspective as guest lecturers.

We have ongoing research collaborations with NHS clinicians that provide opportunities for students to have access to clinical populations for dissertation research projects and work experience placements. Learning and teaching methods

Teaching includes lectures, seminars and workshops, some of which will be student-led. There will be a variety of assessment activities such as examinations, essays, case study analysis, poster presentations and the design of a health promotion campaign.

The MSc Health Psychology provides students with opportunities for work experience in the School of Psychology’s own Psychology and Well-Being Clinic (PAWB Wales), in addition to research projects with our NHS partners on issues such as pain management, eating disorders and cardiac rehabilitation.

As well as our excellent dedicated teaching facilities, the University has recently invested in a new clinic facility that offers a wide range of psychological services to the public. The Psychology and Well-Being Clinic Wales (PAWB Wales) services include play therapy, health psychology, sport psychology, occupational psychology and behaviour analysis. Through the clinic, MSc Health Psychology students and trainee practitioners can gain access to real life training opportunities.

Work Experience and Employment Prospects

The Sc Health Psychology provides current, up-to-date theory, knowledge and skills related to therapeutic play and enables graduates to work as therapeutic play specialists in educational, healthcare or social care settings.

In addition, an understanding of play is key to current government education initiatives and course content addresses the Welsh Government’s Foundation Phase and other early years educational curricula. Hence this award offers excellent career development in the field of play, whether as a teacher or education specialist, play worker or play development officer, nursery manager, or work in health or social services.

Assessment methods

Assessment uses a variety of methods, including essays, diaries, research reports, presentations, portfolios of observations and clinical notes. There are opportunities for work placements.

Facilities

As an MSc Health Psychology student, you’lll have access to the latest learning technologies, facilities and equipment, including excellent designated facilities.

These include observation and interview rooms equipped with two-way mirror, CCTV and audio and allow research and interview practice sessions to be conducted and recorded onto DVD. We also have a custom-built air-conditioned PC laboratory which provides access to specialist software for running psychology experiments and conducting careers guidance interviews. More specialist equipment is also available in our cognitive suite and more details about this are given below.

The cognitive psychology suite houses specialist psychology equipment. This includes eye tracking equipment which is capable of studying the eye movements of individuals whilst they complete cognitive tasks. The suite includes EEG (electroencephalogram) and ECG (electrocardiogram) facilities for recording electrical activity in the heart and scalp. There is also a driving simulator which is currently being used by postgraduate students to complete a study which examines the effects of stressors on driving performance.

As well as our excellent dedicated teaching facilities, the School of Psychology offers a wide range of psychological services to the general public. These are offered through our new PAWB Wales clinic facility and include play therapy, behaviour analysis, health and sport psychology interventions. The clinic activities support our wide range of postgraduate opportunities and undergraduate students can also get involved in some of the clinic’s work.

This was the first MSc in Clinical Nutrition to be established in the UK and has gained an international reputation, attracting students from around the world. You will consider the patient’s journey from birth to extreme age in the context of the metabolic response to injury or to chronic disease. The course is designed for all members of nutrition support teams and is also suitable for students who wish to pursue clinically-based nutrition research.

After establishing a firm foundation in physiology and the biochemistry of nutrition, this course will cover the nutritional management for clinical conditions such as gastro-enteral problems, long-term disablement and intensive care. It also includes a focus on nutrition support in paediatric, adult, older adult and critically ill patients.

This course is perfect for nutrition support teams or those who want to pursue a career or a doctorate in clinically-based nutrition. The course will provide an important insight into contemporary developments in clinical nutrition for a wide range of healthcare professionals.

Please note this programme does not lead to a qualification in the UK as a registered Dietitian. It is an accredited course with the Association for Nutrition, and does enable you to become a registered nutritionist, once you have complete two years in the nutrition field.

We offer a diverse range of modules to build your knowledge and enable you to focus on topics that interest you. Recent examples of these topics have included: macronutrient and micronutrient metabolism in health and disease, nutrient digestion and absorption and gastrointestinal disease, nutritional support in paediatric, adult, older adult and critically ill patients, the effect of disease on nutrition status.

Research areas that are also included in the programme are dietary management strategies in women with polycystic ovary syndrome; the role of brain–gut interaction in obesity, eating disorders, and irritable bowel syndrome; the role of the enteric nervous system in known intestinal diseases; vitamin E status in health and disease; the role of microbiota in food and nutritional systems; food bioactives for a healthy gut, brain and vascular system; the regulation of insulin secretion and glucose metabolism in health and diabetes.

Clinical psychology focuses on the challenges faced by people with clinical, mental or physical (neuropsychological) health conditions. The role of the clinical psychologist is to work with these individuals and attempt to improve their quality of life. The Master’s degree in Abnormal and Clinical Psychology at Swansea is designed to equip students with an advanced understanding of the theory and practice of clinical psychology in healthcare settings. The primary purpose of the Abnormal and Clinical Psychology course is to allow students to gain knowledge and experience to enhance their suitability for professional clinical training (i.e. a three year DCl in Clinical Psychology programme at a BPS accredited training centre; see http://careers.bps.org.uk/area/clinical).

Entry onto a clinical psychology doctorate training programme is extremely competitive, with candidates usually expected to have acquired training and experience beyond degree level. This course is for people already working in a healthcare setting (in areas including psychiatry, clinical and forensic psychology, occupational therapy, social work, nursing, general medical practitioners) who are interested in delivering Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) in clinical settings. It will provide sufficient theoretical and skills training and can develop your career as a therapist and the service you provide.

CBT is the model of psychotherapy most tested by research trials for a range of mental and even physical disorders, ranging from depression, anxiety and phobias to eating disorders, schizophrenia and chronic pain. Healthcare professionals are increasingly required to demonstrate a flexible, multidisciplinary approach to make the best use of skills and resources. The NHS actively promotes provision of evidence-based management. CBT is the evidence-based psychotherapy par excellence. It can be effective as a stand-alone treatment and can also be used in conjunction with other medical or psychological treatments. The model is versatile and creative and its techniques can be used selectively in general medical, psychological and nursing practice, as well as informing whole courses of integrated treatment.

This course will help you refine your CBT skills, empower you to use the model in a range of clinical situations, and focus on the development of a respectful and pro-active relationship with patients. The therapeutic alliance is central to the delivery of CBT and the course will teach you to forge a positive collaborative relationship with patients as a means of improving and maintaining the patient’s mental health. The course is delivered by staff of NHS Lothian and Greater Glasgow.

Teaching, learning and assessment

The teaching and learning methods used will encourage participative and independent learning and you will arrange to see patients one day per week. Assessment methods will include essays, audio recordings of therapy sessions, case studies and supervisor assessments. Class sizes are usually around 30 for the PgCert and 15 for the PgDip.

Teaching hours and attendance

You will attend lectures one day per fortnight during the course and in the weeks between lectures will see patients and receive supervision. You will be required to carry out a significant amount of independent work each week (see NHS website for more details).

PROGRAMME OVERVIEW

Nutritional medicine concerns itself with the part that nutrition plays in health, disease, lifecycle and ageing.

The aim of the programme is to inform and educate those to whom the public turns for advice on nutritionally-related aspects of health and disease and those involved in the manufacture of foods and food supplements.

It is appropriate for the in-service training of doctors, dietitians, pharmacists and healthcare workers.

The programme consists of three-day taught periods at the University, preceded by preparatory study, and followed by consolidation and assessment. It will teach you to take a critical and scholarly approach to the theory, practice, literature and research findings within the subject.

This programme is studied part-time. On successful completion of the programme students may apply for registration as a Nutritionist on the UK Voluntary Register of Nutritionists via the Association for Nutrition. EDUCATIONAL AIMS OF THE PROGRAMME

The aim of the programme is to provide Masters-level learning in Nutritional Science related to health and disease. Students will gain knowledge and skills necessary to investigate, understand and apply the concepts of Nutritional Medicine in relation to current health issues. Specifically, the programme aims:
-To further the students’ knowledge of the mechanisms underlying disorders with nutritional aetiologies at both the biochemical and molecular level
-To develop evidence-based knowledge and practice in students in healthcare roles, private practice or industry who provide nutrition-related care or advice
-To enhance the critical and analytical skills of students through taking a critical and scholarly approach to theory, practice, literature and research findings within the subject resulting in a greaterunderstanding of the range and potential of nutritional management of disease risk
-To provide opportunities for professional development, encourage the acquisition of intellectual scientific, technical and transferable skills to promote self-directed and life-long learning, allowing students to show evidence of their development and support their career progression

This part time postgraduate programme in Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapy enables mental health professionals/practitioners develop specialist skills and competencies in CBP to provide effective psychological interventions for variety of clinical disorders.

The course was established in 1995 and alumni includes a wide range of professionals who have developed their knowledge and skills in CBT. In 2008 the programme was granted Level 1 and 2 accreditation by the British Association of Cognitive and Behavioural Psychotherapies (BABCP).

The programme will enable participants to teach basic CBP skills, supervise other practitioners, critically appraise research in CBP and conduct basic audit and clinical research.

Successful completion at the Cert and Dip levels of the programme allows participants to apply for personal accreditation by the lead organisation for CBT in the UK, the British Association for Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies (BABCP).

Content

The main focus of this programme is on common mental disorders in adults such as depression, anxiety,eating disorders and obsessive compulsive disorder but also considers CBP in more complex areas such as chronic depression.

Flexibility for career and study

The programme allows students to combine work and study : participants attend teaching in Dundee one day a week from September to May whilst remaining in practice a vital component in allowing them to develop and apply the knowledge and skills gained on the programme.

The programme is taught through a combination of lectures, workshops, clinical demonstrations and peer-learning through group discussion as well as the completion of case studies within the students’ own workplace.

A distinct benefit for students is the teaching of skills through structured role-playing exercises to develop clinical /counselling skills. In addition all students undertake supervised clinical practice with a range of different disorders.

Teaching Faculty

The programme is a collaborative venture between the University of Dundee and NHS Tayside. All staff teaching on the programme are experienced practicing CBP practitioners.The programme also draws on specialist clinical contributors from elsewhere in Scotland.

The standard qualification for a career in clinical psychology, a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology will entitle you to apply for registration with the Health Professions Council and chartered status with the British Psychological Society.

You'll be trained to an advanced level in the use of psychological interventions across a variety of settings, and gain competencies in the application of a range of therapies, including cognitive behavioural therapy and interpersonal therapy, and other approaches.

In addition to compulsory competencies in psychological therapies and clinical case management, you will also achieve advanced competencies in consultation and supervision, service development and governance and applied psychology research and evaluation.

The programme is constantly updated to ensure it reflects current practice, and you’ll be taught by lecturers who, as practitioners, are able to convey the most up-to-date methods and theories.

Thanks to our partnership with NHS Education for Scotland and a number of Scottish NHS boards, you’ll be employed throughout your training as a trainee clinical psychologist. Half of your training will be clinical practice-based and you will complete a number of clinical practice placements, usually within your employing NHS Health Board area, covering different specialties and service areas.

The core purpose of the clinical psychology training programme is to train clinical psychologists to doctorate level, which allows trainees to impart the range of competences necessary to become eligible to apply for chartered status within the British Psychological Society and to apply for Health Professions Council registration as a Practitioner/Clinical Psychologist.

The programme provides sufficient experiences to equip trainees with the skills, knowledge and core values of the profession to work effectively within the NHS with a range of clients and in different settings using various psychological interventions.

- Cognitive suite
The cognitive psychology suite houses specialist psychology equipment. This includes eye tracking equipment which is capable of studying the eye movements of individuals whilst they complete cognitive tasks. The suite includes EEG (electroencephalogram) and ECG (electrocardiogram) facilities for recording electrical activity in the heart and scalp. There is also a driving simulator which is currently being used by postgraduate students to complete a study which examines the effects of stressors on driving performance.

- Psychology clinic facility (PAWB Wales)
As well as our excellent dedicated teaching facilities, the School of Psychology offers a wide range of psychological services to the general public. These are offered through our new PAWB Wales clinic facility and include play therapy, behaviour analysis, health and sport psychology interventions. What you study

You will take two compulsory modules:

- Child and Adolescent Mental Health - The module introduces students to definitions and concepts in the field of CAMH and the current structuring of CAMH Services in the United Kingdom. Sessions look in detail at particular Mental Health Difficulties, which include Attachment Difficulties, Emotional Difficulties, and Behavioural Difficulties. Particular study is made of gender and culture in relation to Mental Health Difficulties and these sessions include a focus on eating disorders, self-harm and trauma.

- Research Methodology - In common with all of the MA Education programmes, you must take the core module; Research Methodology.

Additional specialist modules can include:

- Managing and Supporting Children and Adolescents with SEN (CAMH/SEBD) - This module focuses on the theory that underpins practice in this area of work, and compliments the core module. The module looks at definitions and conceptual difficulties in relation to CAMH and SEBD, and then goes on to examine how theory impacts on interventions in different models (therapeutic, behaviourist and bio-psycho-social.

- Children’s Wellbeing - This module takes a broad view of Children’s wellbeing by exploring the concept of, and the challenges of, measuring wellbeing in addition to considering how wellbeing is addressed in Health, Education, Social Care, Youth Justice and by Non-Governmental Organisations. The module will also explore and evaluate a range of approaches to promoting Children’s wellbeing and an integral part of the lecture programme will be the use of Visiting Lecturers to illustrate examples of evidence-based practice.

- Working with Vulnerable Children - This module examines contemporary models of childhood and adolescence and introduces the concepts of vulnerability, risk and resilience. The module also considers the challenges of research and intervention with vulnerable groups.

Alternatively you can take one module from one of the other MA Education pathways. To complete the full MA you will present a 17,000 word research dissertation and a 3,000 word research dissemination plan.

Learning and teaching methods

Each module is assessed via a written assignment of 5,000 words, which usually takes the form of an essay. Each course member is supported by a tutor who provides individual tutorials and guidance during the assignment writing process.

Assessment methods

To complete the full MA you will present a 17,000 word research dissertation and a 3,000 word research dissemination plan. If you wish to exit earlier, the Postgraduate Diploma is awarded to students who complete four modules which form the taught element.

Why study Psychology of Mental Health at Dundee?

The MSc in the Psychology of Mental Health draws upon the recognised expertise of numerous research-active and clinical staff, and will address a broad range of material, including the scientific study of mental health problems, addiction and eating disorders. Postgraduate culture

We have a close postgraduate community with a diverse combination of nationalities. The School runs a Postgraduate seminar and a departmental seminar twice weekly throughout teaching semesters, with invited speakers to the seminars. These seminars are a great way to broaden your awareness of contemporary issues within the field of Psychology, to present your own work, and to network with other postgraduate students.

How you will be assessed

The course is assessed by coursework only.

Each module is worth 20 credits apart from the Research Dissertation Module which is worth 60 credits. The total number of credits awarded is 180 for an MSc course.

Careers

The course will provide a first year of research training for students intending to continue with postgraduate research or further professional training within mental health or Clinical Psychology.

We expect that this course will significantly improve the chances of students gaining a place on Clinical Psychology Courses as well as providing overseas students with a basic training for job opportunities in their home countries.

Overseas Academic Scholarships

The School of Psychology offers three Overseas Academic Scholarships of £3,000 each to overseas (international) taught postgraduate students. About the programme

Within the next decade, there will be new challenges and opportunities for midwives to develop their roles as practitioners, partners and leaders in delivering and shaping future maternity services (Midwifery 2020, 2010). This programme will give you the education and skills to embrace this challenge.

Entry is also dependent on the following successful screening: health screening; Protection of Vulnerable Groups; and personal interview.

Preference is given to those with qualifications at first examination sitting.

Applicants may also be considered with other academic, vocational or professional qualifications deemed to be equivalent.

Further desirable skills pre-application: communication/interpersonal skills; ability to work as part of a team; IT literate; research literate; driving license; previous work experience in a caring/health environment.

Practical experience

The programme comprises 50% practice and 50% theory. Practice placements are available throughout NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde; NHS Ayrshire and Arran; NHS Lanarkshire; NHS Highland and NHS Dumfries and Galloway. There is at least one placement outwith the acute maternity sector.

Your learning

Year 1:
Focuses on normality in the childbirth process, receiving specialist education in relation to life and social sciences, adaptation to pregnancy, and basic caring practical midwifery skills. You are introduced to midwifery practice during the pre-conceptual, prenatal, intranatal and postnatal periods; key public health issues; and professional, ethical and legal issues.

Year 2:
Focuses on the assessment, management, support and care for women with complex medical, obstetric and/or social ill-health and/ or needs during pregnancy, labour and/ or the postnatal period. Issues are examined around women’s emotional and mental health including eating disorders, suicide, and reaction to bereavement.

Year 3:
Further enhances your knowledge and understanding to advanced scholarship level within leadership and management frameworks. This enables you to challenge existing practice, develop new ideas, and work creatively and innovatively to advance practice. You will also undertake a dissertation project.

Professional recognition

The course is approved by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). Graduates are eligible for registration as a registered midwife with the NMC.

State-of-the-art facilities

Our campuses are equipped with artificial simulated environments with contemporary healthcare technology, where you’ll learn in a realistic context, to put your knowledge into practice. The unpredictability of patient symptoms are mimicked using sophisticated software in a clinical ward setting, ranging from low to high dependency beds.

Investment in the Domus Initiative – an older adult artificial home environment – provides you with experience in caring for older people and dementia care. In a first for the Scottish university sector, we have established A Community Orientated Resource for Nursing (ACORN) where students can practice within a simulated primary care environment.

Lanarkshire and Paisley campuses also provide midwifery students with excellent learning and teaching environments with facilities and equipment that includes a birthing room with maternal simulator and a birthing pool for simulated water births.

Life-changing research

We work jointly with a range of partners, both nationally and internationally, on our research interests, and this directly informs teaching at UWS – which means that you’ll learn from the experts.

Mental health nursing is a constantly evolving field, with as many as one in four people believed to experience some mental health condition each year. The Mental Health Nursing programme at LSBU is designed to equip you with the skills and competencies to meet the challenges of providing effective mental health care.

Throughout the course, you will gain practice experience in a wide range of in-patient and community settings, reflecting the diversity of mental health specialties. This could include acute psychiatry, child and adolescent mental health, forensic psychiatry, eating disorders, addictions and rehabilitation.

This course equips you with the skills to work in a diverse range of mental health nursing roles across a range of settings, including the NHS and the private health care sector.

You will be compassionate with lots of patience and the ability to remain calm under pressure, with reserves of mental stamina. Exceptional people skills, communicating clearly with people from different backgrounds is essential. The main resource mental health nurses have to draw upon is themselves and how they engage effectively with service.

Modules

You will be taught separately from the three-year undergraduate students and will study the following:

Year 1:
- Applied biological and pharmacological sciences for nursing
This module introduces biological and pharmacological sciences and applies this to the chosen field of nursing.

- Frameworks and concepts for mental health nursing
This Module introduces mental health service provision. An exploration of the frameworks for care and underpinning philosophies will enable you to appreciate and develop your knowledge and skills in holistic and inclusive assessment and care planning across the service users' personal recovery journey.

- Public health and well-being
This module explores national and international health policies and examines the broader social, economic, environmental and political factors that impact health and well-being. It allows you to investigate issues that have an impact on the health of individuals and communities, recognising the importance of supportive social, physical and cultural environments to promote health and well-being. The experience of mental health, physical illness and learning disabilities will be explored within the context of children's and adults lives and the impact these may have on physical and mental well-being

Year 2:
- Best practice in mental health nursing
Practice to service development and change. It also aims to enable course members to make the transition from students to registered mental health nurses.

- Working with complex presentations
This module builds on Year 1 of the programme. Having established an in-depth knowledge of common mental health presentations, assessment, intervention and evaluation You are now required to consider more complex presentations. The focus will be on the student developing the required knowledge and skills to manage effectively the varied and sometimes conflicting demands which arise out of complex situations across the life span and differing services. The emphasis will be on effective assessment and management of risk, where a critical understanding will develop of the complexities inherent in service user need, service provision and the emerging process for decision-making.

- Politics and leadership
Exploration of the process of health care policy making and realising leadership potential. Studying this module should help you to appreciate not only what is involved in leadership, but also how each individual nurse can make a contribution to the leadership within their area of practice.

- Dissertation (optional)
This module provides you with the opportunity to undertake original enquiry in a chosen area of professional practice. Through the preparatory learning set you will be able to consolidate and extend your knowledge and understanding of research and evaluation design and associated methods of enquiry. You will be supported to develop the practical skills necessary to plan and carry out your chosen project. The preparatory learning set will address ethical and governance issues and processes relevant to your project.

Employability

This course will equip you with the skills to work in a diverse range of mental health nursing roles across a range of settings, including the NHS and the private health care sector. Successful completion of the course fulfils the requirements for graduates to be able to register with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) as a Registered Nurse - Mental Health. Recent graduates from this course have gone onto a range of nurse practitioner roles within mental health nursing.

Role and responsibilities

Day-to-day, the work broadly involves working in the community and hospitals taking on a variety of tasks – from giving patients medication, to assessing and supporting a patient's needs.

With experience, there are multiple opportunities for specialisation as your career progresses – such as: alcohol or substance misuse, forensic psychology, psychotherapeutic interventions or working with offenders.

Working hours and salary

Hours can be demanding for Mental Health nurses. Long shifts, unsocial hours and possibly being called to work at the last minute are all common. Salaries start around £21,000. However, with career progression and developed experience this can extend to well over £50,000. (Prospects)

As a graduate from this course, you will be able to apply for further study at postgraduate level. Placements

- Time spent on placement
During the course you will spend 50% of your time involved in academic study and 50% in clinical practice within a broad variety of healthcare settings. A clinical practice placement allows you to put theory into practice by working with a range of health professionals in clinical situations to develop the skills, knowledge and experience required to become a competent nurse. Although sometimes initially challenging, practice learning is one of the most interesting and exciting aspects of learning to be a nurse.

Clinical settings

At LSBU you will experience a variety of clinical settings such as NHS acute Trusts, community placements, independent sector and voluntary sector organisations.

Examples of current placement areas:
- Camden and Islington NHS Foundation Trust for students based at our Southwark campus
- South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust for students based at our Southwark campus
- We are proud to be the only provider for the North East London Foundation Trust (NELFT). Havering students are placed at this Trust

Structure of placements

Placements are spread over the two years:

Your first clinical placements are designed to introduce you to working in a professional setting and to develop essential care and basic assessment skills, infection control and learn about safeguarding vulnerable people.

You will then build on this experience and take on more responsibility, progressing your clinical reasoning skills and begin to look after small groups of patients making confident, proactive decisions for their health and management with less supervision.

You will also be able to choose a speciality (e.g. working with Clinical Nurse Specialists, specialist services or independent and 3rd sector providers), or a different context of care (e.g. prison, private health care facility, social care, charity, hospice etc.), or a lived experience of a certain condition (e.g. charity work, carer shadowing, etc.)

Supported by a mentor

Whilst in the clinical placement we ensure our nursing students receive continuous support and guidance from a dedicated mentor and practice learning teams made up of lecturers and practitioners.

Facilities

Counselling and Communication Suite:
Our counselling and communication suite is the ideal place for Mental Health students to role play realistic work-based scenarios. It contains two adjoining rooms with a one-way window and audio link, that allows students to practice one-to-one situations with 'clients' while they are monitored by teaching staff in the adjoining room.
