Assessment

You will be assessed through a range of tasks, including presentations, portfolios, development of resources, research proposals, written tasks and a research project in an area of particular interest to you.

As part of your Early Years placement, you will be observed teaching and working with young children by your mentor and University tutor. This will support your development as an Early Years teacher and allow you to focus on ensuring that you meet the necessary Early Years Teacher Standards.

In all your assessments, you will be encouraged and supported to make links between your developing practice in the workplace and your unit assessments.

Course details

You’ll combine 14 weeks of campus-based lectures and seminars with three different placements totalling 24 weeks. Learn to teach Areas of Learning for the Early Years Foundation Stage, the core subjects of the national curriculum for Key Stage 1 as well as an introduction to the non-core subjects. You’ll learn through lectures, seminars and workshops and through independent research. Throughout the year you’ll reflect upon your professional development as a teacher, bringing together your understanding of educational theory with your developing knowledge of outstanding practice. Your first two placements will be in early years settings, where you will learn to provide exciting learning opportunities for young children. In your final placement, which will be in Key Stage 1, you will take on – as closely as possible - the full responsibilities of a qualified teacher. You will be supported with your preparations for your first teaching post as a newly qualified teacher (NQT).

You will be trained across the Early Years Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1, combining on-campus study with high quality training in schools, ensuring you gain the experience to be an outstanding teacher of children aged 3-7.

On completion of the course you will have the confidence to take up your first teaching post with a clear appreciation of the latest approaches and strategies to teaching theory, combined with extensive practical experience, to enable you to educate and inspire Early Years children.

What will I study?

The programme starts with an extensive subject knowledge and understanding audit, to identify your main strengths and weaknesses, and enable your tutor to focus on your individual development needs.

The PGCE consists of four main elements:

- Personal and Professional Development – you will develop your learning skills and will learn how to reflect upon and take charge of your own development as a trainee teacher. Gaining knowledge of how children learn and how their needs differ, you will also develop strategies for the core skills of planning, assessment, teaching and class management, along with an understanding of the education system, and of the wider professional role of a teacher in school. A critical appreciation of theoretical perspectives, philosophies and research-based findings will also be conveyed;

- Curriculum – you will learn about the National Curriculum at Key Stage 1 for each subject and how to plan, teach, and assess it across the whole primary age range. You will also learn about the Early Years Foundation Stage and the areas of Learning and Development within this;

- Specialist Strand – you will follow this both at Edge Hill University and in school. The aim is to enable you to pursue your own particular interests in Early Years and prepare for an eventual leadership role in schools or settings;

- Research Specialism – you will be immersed in the contemporary key theories and principles of early years education and undertake a relevant small-scale research project.
The importance of play-based learning will be examined in each element. Cross-curricular themes are also considered as are the practical skills of planning for learning, promoting positive attitudes and working in an extended team and with parents and carers.

One of the most important elements of this programme is the practical teaching experience you will gain through placement in one of our partnership schools or nurseries. This hands-on approach is combined with tutor-led sessions and self-study so that you can increase your ability to plan, teach and manage the learning of children aged 3-7 years. You will learn how to teach pupils across the ability range, how to assess pupils’ progress in learning, manage behaviour and maintain a happy learning environment.

The programme will develop your understanding of how children learn and also consider behaviour management, child development and other important professional issues related to the Early Years Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1. You will be encouraged to develop as a reflective and well informed professional.

How will I study?

A combination of academic study, group discussion and reflection, practical and work-based learning in the classroom will give you the knowledge and skills you need to become an excellent teacher. You will be supported by online and distance learning materials and encouraged to develop key skills, including the use of ICT, to support your own learning.

The course involves a significant amount of time in schools and settings. You will complete a series of placements in Early Years Foundation Stage classrooms (age range 3-7 years) and Key Stage 1 classrooms (age range 5-7 years). Here, you will work alongside mentors and peers to further your professional development.

In schools and Early Years settings you will undertake a range of differentiated training experiences which will be closely linked to your individual targets. Your teaching timetable will increase in relation to responsibility, as your training progresses and you become more confident and competent in the classroom. You will progressively assume the responsibility for the children and their achievement and progress, involving excellence in teaching, learning and assessment.

How will I be assessed?

A balanced combination of coursework and observed classroom experience will be assessed against the Professional Standards for QTS.

Before the end of your PGCE you will need to complete a Career Entry and Development Profile (CEDP) which acts as a useful bridge between your initial teacher training programme and your Induction Year as a Newly Qualified Teacher.

This is an intensive, full time programme leading to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) alongside your academic PGDE award. University-based study includes: a full time block of three weeks at the start of the course; one day per week until January; occasional week-long, full time study blocks between January and June and a number of conference days. A minimum of 120 days is spent in schools.
Placements are organised in our Partnership schools in the Greater Merseyside area. For the majority of the training you will gain your teaching experience in a “Home School” with a six week placement in an “alternative” school after Christmas. This innovative model ensures that you feel genuinely part of the staff whilst on school placement and can monitor and gain satisfaction from your impact on your pupils’ progress over time.

You will also be allocated a teacher mentor who will organise and supervise your school-based training. Your mentor will be supported by your LJMU tutor who will visit your school several times to monitor your progress. Additional professional development sessions are organised in school during placements.

Tutorial support is an important part of the LJMU learning process and you will receive a personalised service that will enable you to set targets and achieve your potential. Your personal tutor will support your academic and professional development and will meet with you formally during the year.

You will undertake a significant amount of independent study and preparation to support your course assignments and school-based work and should be prepared to work some evenings and weekends.

University-based training takes place at the IM Marsh campus just four miles from the city centre. Here you will find independent study spaces with IT facilities, a library, access to student welfare and support, a gym and other sports facilities plus a café and shop.

The IM Marsh Library houses the main collections linked to this course and is open from 8am until 11pm during term time. You will also have access to the 24 hour, city centre Aldham Robarts and Avril Robarts libraries.

The University element of the programme is based around six core modules focusing on:

As an early years teacher you’ll support children’s development through play and care, creating a secure base from which they can safely explore their world.

This part-time employment-based route is suitable for skilled graduates who are already working with children aged from birth to five.

You'll gain training and further experience to demonstrate the Teachers' Standards (Early Years) and gain Early Years Teacher Status (EYTS) alongside a solid understanding of the continuum to Key Stage 1.

Achieving EYTS means that you’ll be able to take on higher level and leadership roles to improve the experiences and life-chances of young children, providing them with the best start in life.

Our trained teachers are specialists in early childhood development and many go on to lead practice across the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS).

We work in partnership with your current employer to provide training and support and offer your employer a £7,000 financial incentive to provide for your cover while you're at university and on placement.

Course structure

On this programme you will spend the majority of your time in your current workplace, with two other placements working with other age ranges including at Key Stage 1. In your workplace and on your placements you will put into practice the skills you learn through your training, with regard to current research and relevant theories.

You will attend university sessions once a month, where you will reflect on and analyse your own practice, and evaluate the work practices of your fellow practitioners. The training programme is dynamic, tailored to your individual needs and areas for improvement.

Assessment process

You will be assessed via:

• a formative review to determine your progress in meeting the Early Years Teachers' Standards
• a portfolio of evidence which relates to your practice against the Early Years Teachers' Standards
• direct observation of your practice.

Areas of study

For example, if you normally work with children aged 3–5, you would have a placement working with under 3s. This placement is for two days per week for eight weeks.

At the university we have close partnerships with local schools and early years settings to support your placements. The EYITT course team will help you to arrange them and you will have the support of mentors throughout.

After the course

This PGCE School Direct course leads to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), which enables you to teach three to seven year-olds. Our trainees from this course have gone on to become teachers at schools like Grafton Primary, Tudor Primary and Willow Tree Primary.

Funding

Funding is available for many postgraduate courses leading to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). Depending on your teaching subject and degree classification, you may be eligible for a bursary or scholarship of up to £30,000 through the teacher training bursary.

PGCE Schools Direct

The School Direct school placements work around the training calendar for the student teacher with the PGCE offered at the university. This means we can only offer places in Early Years / Primary and in Secondary teaching Maths, Modern Languages and Science with a specialism in Biology, Chemistry or Physics.

You will attend the training workshops at the university with other regular PGCE students and carry out placements of 120 days in a school or consortium of schools with a School Direct allocation. This time could be divided between two schools with some flexibility.

London Met has School Direct partnership with nearly 100 schools. This large body of schools have joined with us to build a cross-capital alliance, providing diverse contexts in which to train the new generation of London teachers.

Most of our trainees follow a programme modelled on the traditional PGCE, with time spent under tutor supervision at London Metropolitan University and the school placement divided between two partner schools.

Moving to one campus

Between 2016 and 2020 we're investing £125 million in the London Metropolitan University campus, moving all of our activity to our current Holloway campus in Islington, north London. This will mean the teaching location of some courses will change over time.

Whether you will be affected will depend on the duration of your course, when you start and your mode of study. The earliest moves affecting new students will be in September 2017. This may mean you begin your course at one location, but over the duration of the course you are relocated to one of our other campuses. Our intention is that no full-time student will change campus more than once during a course of typical duration.

All students will benefit from our move to one campus, which will allow us to develop state-of-the-art facilities, flexible teaching areas and stunning social spaces.

This course is aimed at people who are currently working with young children aged 0-5 years in early years settings including children's centres, schools and private day care. You deepen your knowledge and understanding of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) and early childhood development for young children.

During the course you cover developing the curriculum and pedagogy for the age phases 0-3 and 3-5 years. You also gain knowledge and understanding of transition issues, including children's progress through key stages 1 and 2.

Supported by experienced workplace mentors, you extend your knowledge and professional skills in key areas including

  • the observation and assessment of young children's development
  • children's development and learning through play
  • children's participation and inclusion
  • collaborative working with parents and carers
  • the leadership of staff teams

During your training you strengthen your expertise in teaching early literacy, including reading, and mathematics, including numeracy. The course also enhances your skills in supporting children's learning and development across all the prime and specific areas of the EYFS. You deepen your understanding of the characteristics of effective learning that are key to this stage of development.

You complete an assessed teaching practice in your home school or early years setting, and a second assessed placement with a younger or older age-group in a second school or early years setting. Placement experience is organised so that you cover the three age groups within the 0-5 age range.

Throughout your course you are supported to develop a range of relevant academic and professional skills at graduate and postgraduate level. This supports and enhances your career potential, opening up opportunities for higher level posts within early years services.

This NCTL accredited PGCE Early Years course at London Met and our lead schools prepares you for teaching three to seven-year-olds (Key Stage 1) and leads to Qualified Teacher Status.

The course consists of theoretical study at London Met and two practical school placements of 11 and 13 weeks. We’ll extend your knowledge, develop your classroom practice and help you examine the underlying principles and values that inform current debates around educational issues.

At London Met, you’ll learn about teaching in urban, multicultural and multilingual schools and will address the issues of language, diversity and equality across the curriculum. Training within the framework and principles of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) and the unique London context, you’ll be well equipped to help maximise every child's’ development.

During your school placements you will be supported by school-based mentors and university-linked tutors. The tutors will also deliver your university sessions, ensuring continuity of support throughout the PGCE.

Overall, the purpose of the course is to develop you into a teacher of the highest quality. One who is reflective, creative, imaginative and responsive to all children’s needs. This approach has led to the course being highly rated by Ofsted:

Work placement:

After the course

This PGCE leads to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) which enables you to teach either 3 to 7 year olds. Our trainees from this course have gone on to become teachers at schools like Grafton Primary, Tudor Primary and Willow Tree Primary. Whether you have applied through London Met or School Direct, you’ll have the same opportunities for employment upon successful completion of the course.

Funding

Funding is available for many postgraduate courses leading to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). Depending on your teaching subject and degree classification, you may be eligible for a bursary or scholarship of up to £30,000 through the teacher training bursary.

PGCE School Direct

The School Direct school placements work around the training calendar for the student teacher with the PGCE offered at the university. This means we can only offer places in Early Years / Primary and in Secondary teaching Maths, Modern Languages and Science with a specialism in Biology, Chemistry or Physics.

You will attend the training workshops at the university with other regular PGCE students and carry out placements of 120 days in a school or consortium of schools with a School Direct allocation. This time could be divided between two schools with some flexibility.

London Met has School Direct partnership with nearly 100 schools. This large body of schools have joined with us to build a cross-capital alliance, providing diverse contexts in which to train the new generation of London teachers.

Most of our trainees follow a programme modelled on the traditional PGCE, with time spent under tutor supervision at London Metropolitan University and the school placement divided between two partner schools.

Moving to one campus

Between 2016 and 2020 we're investing £125 million in the London Metropolitan University campus, moving all of our activity to our current Holloway campus in Islington, north London. This will mean the teaching location of some courses will change over time.

Whether you will be affected will depend on the duration of your course, when you start and your mode of study. The earliest moves affecting new students will be in September 2017. This may mean you begin your course at one location, but over the duration of the course you are relocated to one of our other campuses. Our intention is that no full-time student will change campus more than once during a course of typical duration.

All students will benefit from our move to one campus, which will allow us to develop state-of-the-art facilities, flexible teaching areas and stunning social spaces.

Northumbria University is a centre of excellence for initial teacher education, this innovative high quality distance learning Early Primary course has been specifically developed to provide a route for students wishing to achieve a PGCE in Early Primary Education with Qualified Teacher Status. It has been especially designed to facilitate students who prefer both a school based and distance based route into teaching and require a longer trajectory of study due to work and life commitments. Students complete the programme in two years.

This Early Primary (Blended) course is divided into two parts. Its teaching has been graded as 'outstanding' for the third consecutive time by Ofsted inspectors which reaffirms the University’s status as one of the UK’s leading institutions for excellence in teacher training.

As well as offering outstanding teacher training courses, we are one of the few universities that awards 120 credits for successful completion of our courses, which we award at Masters level. The primary programmes meet all aspects of government requirements for Initial Teacher Training. General Primary programme
Students on the General Primary (5–11 years) programme follow a range of courses that address the statutory curricula for the core and foundation subjects alongside Professional Studies, which considers whole school issues.
Early Years programme
This programme allows you to focus your training on work with children aged from three to seven years of age. You spend time in nursery classes, as well as teaching children of school age in both Reception and Key Stage 1 classes. You follow the same range of courses as those on the General Primary programme, in addition to an advanced study of early years education.
Both of these programmes will qualify you to teach children aged 3 - 11 years.

School-based experiences are a central part of these programmes, with an opportunity for you to experience a range of ages within different schools. Both programmes also feature a range of professional courses to help you plan, teach, and develop your classroom skills. The programmes are designed, in conjunction with partnership schools, to meet the Teachers' Standards for the Award of Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). The high quality personalised support, ensures that the majority of our students exceed the teachers's standards at an outstanding level (Ofsted report 2013).

Alongside you will also complete a Postgraduate Certificate in Professional Studies in Education (60 masters-level credits) which may count towards a full masters qualification.

What will you study?

You will gain a greater understanding of what it is to be an early years teacher within the Early Years Foundation Stage and the knowledge that underpins the delivery of this to babies and children in the birth to five years age range. Topics covered include, safeguarding and child protection, early literacy and phonics, early maths, personalised progress and tracking and leadership and management.

As an early years teacher, you play an essential role in children's development between birth and the age of five, providing high-quality early education. By training to deliver the Early Years Foundation Stage whilst undertaking the Graduate Employment Based course, you will learn how to use your knowledge and skills to ensure children benefit from a high standard of early years teaching.

Employment of early years teachers

The Government wants to give more autonomy to headteachers so that they can decide who is best qualified and suited to teach in their schools. Early years teachers will be specialists in birth to five years old and will be ideally placed to fulfil the needs of employers in private and independent settings and schools to provide high-quality education and care for babies and young children. Settings and schools are able to take advantage of changes introduced in September 2013 that mean that head teachers will have even more flexibility and freedom on pay and will be able to place staff on the most appropriate point on the relevant pay scales.

Training and assessment pathway

The Graduate Employment Based pathway is designed for graduates in an early years setting who require some additional training and further experience to demonstrate the Teachers' Standards (Early Years).

Trainees will be required to undertake a the minimum of a two-week alternative placement in an appropriate early years setting as well as 10 days in a Key Stage 1 school. However, depending on experience this may be extended to four weeks if it is identified that the trainee requires more experience in a specific age group within an early years setting.

In this one-year postgraduate course you study the Foundation Curriculum and the core National Curriculum at Key Stage 1 (English, mathematics and science), and are particularly equipped to teach the Foundation Curriculum to pre-school and reception children and Key Stage 1. You also study theory surrounding early childhood learning.

Course detail

On this 38-week course, you spend 19 weeks in schools and 19 in the Department of Education at UWE. The course is designed so that your experiences in these two sites of learning are integrated. In school, you carry out directed tasks that support your learning in the Department of Education, and study in the Department of Education informs your practice in the classroom.

Seminars and lectures equip you to meet the standards to teach and assess the core subjects of Maths, English and Science and, with support, the foundation subjects of the National Curriculum. Trainees are also offered a subject specialism.

Format

We have a contemporary approach to teaching and learning, making full use of up-to-date technology. The course is conducted through lectures, seminars, tutorials and group tasks. The lecturing team has a wide range of recent teaching experience in schools.

With in the department there are workshop areas where you practise many of the practical and school-focused aspects of primary education.

You are allocated a General Professional Studies Tutor who acts as an anchor person during the course and helps with preparation for a professional career in schools.

Placements

Approximately half the course is school-based where you gain in-depth experience in three different types of school during the year. Each block of school experience is preceded by several serial days of observation and planning.

Assessment

Assessment is based on five professionally based assignments and the final block school experience.

Careers / Further study

The Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) courses now include 40 credits of assessment at Master's Level (Level M). If you opt not to attempt the requisite credit at Level M, a Professional Graduate Certificate in Education will be available as an alternative award.
