This course has been developed in partnership with students and employers to offer a qualification that will support working towards Early Years Teacher status. The programme is fully funded by the NCTL, for those who qualify, and bursaries are also available.

It’s particularly aimed at graduates who don’t already work in early years but who may be looking for a career move. It’s also a great option for overseas graduates who are looking to enter the teaching profession within England.

This course is offered on both a full- and part-time basis. The full-time course is a School Direct programme delivered in partnership with the Durham and Newcastle Teaching Alliance. The course is school or early years setting-led, which means you’ll spend most of your time within a designated school or early years setting. It underpins all of the training requirements outlined by the National College for Teaching and Leadership (NCTL) and has been flexibly designed to suit your needs.

This is a School Direct Route which includes substantial placement experience, for graduates with little or no experience of working with children aged 0 to 5 years but wish to pursue a career as an Early Years Teacher. Tuition fees are funded by the National College for Teaching and Leadership (NCTL) and bursaries are payable to trainees with a first class (£5000), 2:1 (£4000) or 2:2 (£2000) classification of degree. Post Graduate Certificate in Early Years Education (Level 7) is also included at no extra cost.

Trainees on the School Direct Route will be taught the theoretical element of the programme by specialist practitioners from Northumbria University. Trainees will be placed in a range of good and outstanding schools and settings across the North East, led by the Durham Teaching School Alliance for the practical elements of the programme.

The academic staff delivering this course are research active with professional experience as educators specialising in the children’s workforce.

Having worked extensively with the under-3’s and pre-school aged children, with multi-agencies and in partnership with parents and carers, they have an excellent understanding of the challenges around researching in professional practice.

Teaching And Assessment

The course offers specialist training to enhance your skills in working with and teaching the under fives.

Your training will be delivered both at Northumbria and within your early years setting. You’ll spend one day per week at university and will complete at least 120 days on placement. If you already work within early years, this setting could be your current employment.

You’ll be supported by a dedicated mentor throughout, who will help you to develop your knowledge, understanding and related pedagogy of the early years.

Our teaching methods have been designed to support your individual learning style and critical reflective abilities and include lectures, seminars, group work, work based projects and assignments. They also involve unobserved and observed teaching practice, development of an individual training plan and a portfolio of documentary evidence.

Throughout the course, you’ll be encouraged to take part in collaborative teamwork through group work tasks, presentations and work-based projects.

Learning Environment

You’ll spend most of your time within your early years setting, supported by your mentor. For the remainder of your time, you’ll take part in lectures, seminars and other teaching and learning activities on campus.

Technology-enabled learning is a fundamental part of this course and you’ll be encouraged to use technology to be active, collaborative, reflective and research-orientated throughout your studies. Technology will help you to work with others, take part in relevant group discussions and reflect on your learning.

The Durham Teaching School Alliance

Etherley Lane Nursery School is one of the ‘Lead’ schools in the Durham Teaching School Alliance. The teaching school alliance is a partnership of good and outstanding primary phase schools which includes nursery schools, infant schools, primary schools with Foundation Stage Units and providers from the private and voluntary sector. Working collaboratively with key strategic partners the alliance provides a range of services to schools and settings including the delivery of the new Early Years School Direct initial teacher training programme.

Etherley Lane Nursery School, together with its partner schools and settings works closely with Northumbria University, the accredited Initial Teacher Training Provider, to offer an innovative and specialized programme in early childhood development from birth to five.

Skills Tests

Entrants for Initial Teacher Education programmes need to be aware of Government regulations regarding mandatory skills tests in numeracy and literacy.The skills tests do not replace the GCSE grade C or above entry requirements. Applicants are encouraged to sit the skills tests prior to interview although this is not essential, however, a firm offer of a place on the programme can only be made once all entry requirements have been met.

Applicants are advised that they will receive one free test and two resit opportunities which will need to be self-funded. If applicants fail three tests, resits will not be allowed within a 24 month period. The skills tests are computerized and can be taken at any of a number of Learn Direct test centres throughout the UK. The Department for Education has developed guidance and support materials to help candidates pass the tests: candidates are strongly advised to review the support material before attempting the skills tests. If any candidate is likely to experience difficulties taking a test and has needs that entitle them to reasonable adjustments, they can apply for special arrangements.

You’ll combine 14 weeks of campus-based lectures and seminars with three different placements totalling 24 weeks. You’ll learn through lectures, seminars and workshops and through independent research. You will be trained across the Early Years Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1, combining on-campus study with high quality training in schools, ensuring you gain the experience to be an outstanding teacher of children aged 3-7.

On completion of the course you will have the confidence to take up your first teaching post with a clear appreciation of the latest approaches and strategies to teaching theory, combined with extensive practical experience, to enable you to educate and inspire Early Years children.

What will I study?

The programme starts with an extensive subject knowledge and understanding audit, to identify your main strengths and weaknesses, and enable your tutor to focus on your individual development needs.

The PGCE consists of four main elements:

- Personal and Professional Development – you will develop your learning skills and will learn how to reflect upon and take charge of your own development as a trainee teacher. Gaining knowledge of how children learn and how their needs differ, you will also develop strategies for the core skills of planning, assessment, teaching and class management, along with an understanding of the education system, and of the wider professional role of a teacher in school. A critical appreciation of theoretical perspectives, philosophies and research-based findings will also be conveyed;

- Curriculum – you will learn about the National Curriculum at Key Stage 1 for each subject and how to plan, teach, and assess it across the whole primary age range. You will also learn about the Early Years Foundation Stage and the areas of Learning and Development within this;

- Specialist Strand – you will follow this both at Edge Hill University and in school. The aim is to enable you to pursue your own particular interests in Early Years and prepare for an eventual leadership role in schools or settings;

- Research Specialism – you will be immersed in the contemporary key theories and principles of early years education and undertake a relevant small-scale research project.
The importance of play-based learning will be examined in each element. Cross-curricular themes are also considered as are the practical skills of planning for learning, promoting positive attitudes and working in an extended team and with parents and carers.

One of the most important elements of this programme is the practical teaching experience you will gain through placement in one of our partnership schools or nurseries. This hands-on approach is combined with tutor-led sessions and self-study so that you can increase your ability to plan, teach and manage the learning of children aged 3-7 years. You will learn how to teach pupils across the ability range, how to assess pupils’ progress in learning, manage behaviour and maintain a happy learning environment.

The programme will develop your understanding of how children learn and also consider behaviour management, child development and other important professional issues related to the Early Years Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1. You will be encouraged to develop as a reflective and well informed professional.

How will I study?

A combination of academic study, group discussion and reflection, practical and work-based learning in the classroom will give you the knowledge and skills you need to become an excellent teacher. You will be supported by online and distance learning materials and encouraged to develop key skills, including the use of ICT, to support your own learning.

The course involves a significant amount of time in schools and settings. You will complete a series of placements in Early Years Foundation Stage classrooms (age range 3-7 years) and Key Stage 1 classrooms (age range 5-7 years). Here, you will work alongside mentors and peers to further your professional development.

In schools and Early Years settings you will undertake a range of differentiated training experiences which will be closely linked to your individual targets. You will progressively assume the responsibility for the children and their achievement and progress, involving excellence in teaching, learning and assessment.

How will I be assessed?

A balanced combination of coursework and observed classroom experience will be assessed against the Professional Standards for QTS.

Before the end of your PGCE you will need to complete a Career Entry and Development Profile (CEDP) which acts as a useful bridge between your initial teacher training programme and your Induction Year as a Newly Qualified Teacher.

You deepen your knowledge and understanding of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) and early childhood development for young children.

During the course you cover developing the curriculum and pedagogy for the age phases 0-3 and 3-5 years. You also gain knowledge and understanding of transition issues, including children's progress through key stages 1 and 2.

Supported by experienced workplace mentors, you extend your knowledge and professional skills in key areas including:

This is an intensive, full time programme leading to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) alongside your academic PGDE award. University-based study includes: a full time block of three weeks at the start of the course; one day per week until January; occasional week-long, full time study blocks between January and June and a number of conference days. A minimum of 120 days is spent in schools.
Placements are organised in our Partnership schools in the Greater Merseyside area. For the majority of the training you will gain your teaching experience in a “Home School” with a six week placement in an “alternative” school after Christmas. This innovative model ensures that you feel genuinely part of the staff whilst on school placement and can monitor and gain satisfaction from your impact on your pupils’ progress over time.

You will also be allocated a teacher mentor who will organise and supervise your school-based training. Your mentor will be supported by your LJMU tutor who will visit your school several times to monitor your progress. Additional professional development sessions are organised in school during placements.

Tutorial support is an important part of the LJMU learning process and you will receive a personalised service that will enable you to set targets and achieve your potential. Your personal tutor will support your academic and professional development and will meet with you formally during the year.

You will undertake a significant amount of independent study and preparation to support your course assignments and school-based work and should be prepared to work some evenings and weekends.

University-based training takes place at the IM Marsh campus just four miles from the city centre. Here you will find independent study spaces with IT facilities, a library, access to student welfare and support, a gym and other sports facilities plus a café and shop.

The IM Marsh Library houses the main collections linked to this course and is open from 8am until 11pm during term time. You will also have access to the 24 hour, city centre Aldham Robarts and Avril Robarts libraries.

The University element of the programme is based around six core modules focusing on:

-Professional Practice (a series of school-based investigations of current issues)
-Developing Reflective Professional Practice (enabling you to effectively evaluate your school-based practice)

COURSE OVERVIEW
The aim of the PGCE Primary and PGCE Early Years course is to enable you to become a reflective, critical and enquiring primary teacher, able to respond flexibly to changing circumstances and to continue to develop your knowledge, understanding and skills throughout your professional life.

Whilst the PGCE is an academic qualification, the emphasis is very much on practical experience with approximately two thirds of the course spent in school.

We are able to offer applicants a choice of routes:

• Full-time 3-7 Age Phase - 1 Year Course
• Full-time 5-11 Age Phase - 1 Year Course

In addition to the age phase options, students on all routes will also be able to opt to take a specialist module in either a National Curriculum Core area, Modern Foreign Languages or another specialism depending on numbers. In addition students on the 3-7 route can opt to take a specialist module in Early Years, this combined pathway of study leads to the PGCE Early Years qualification.

All trainees are trained to teach across the range of subjects in the Primary National Curriculum with a strong focus on English and mathematics.

The main aims of the course are to:

• become committed, confident, autonomous, creative and reflective primary teachers;
• develop a deep understanding of the role of a professional teacher in particular, preparing trainees for a career in primary education in the Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1 (3-7 years) or Key Stage 1 and 2 (5-11 years);
• value and understand the needs of every child and how to personalise learning for individuals;
• teach in culturally diverse and varied environments;
• respond flexibly to changing circumstances and develop knowledge, understanding and skills throughout your professional lives;
• work with originality and, where appropriate, propose new hypotheses in the application of knowledge, together with a practical understanding of how established techniques of research and enquiry are used to create and interpret knowledge in education;
• lead and support colleagues in a specific area of Primary Education (for example English, mathematics, science, primary languages or Early Years)

KEY FACTS
This course has very high employability rates and many of our trainees gain employment in local primary schools. Trainees are supported with the application process as part of their course.

The National College for Teaching and Leadership bursaries are available for trainees on eligible postgraduate courses in England who are not employed as a teacher. Bursary amounts will vary depending on degree class.

We work hard to ensure that we have strong relationships with more than 900 primary schools in the region. All schools sign a partnership agreement in which they pledge a commitment to the quality of experience they offer our trainees.

In the latest Newly Qualified Teacher (NQT) Survey (2011-13 aggregated data) 94 per cent of Birmingham City University trained primary teachers rated the quality of their training as 'good' or 'very good'.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
Applicants will have (or expect to achieve before enrolment) a Bachelor's Honours degree, at upper Second Class level or above from a UK higher education institution or a recognised equivalent in a subject that provides the necessary foundation for work as a primary teacher. Trainees expecting to take a specialist module in a core subject, Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) or Early Years must have an appropriate degree or be able to demonstrate equivalent understanding and experience.

GCSE at grade C or above (or its equivalent) in English, mathematics and a science subject is also necessary at the point of application. For entry onto a teaching course from September 2013 you will also be required to pass the Skills Tests in Literacy and Numeracy.

It is essential for applicants to have spent time in British state primary schools and have some familiarity with the current National Curriculum before submitting an application.

Applicants must also meet The National College for Teaching and Leadership requirements for Initial Teacher Training, which means being medically fit and successfully completing an enhanced disclosure via the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS).

COURSE STRUCTURE
Attendance on the full-time course is Monday to Friday, while faculty sessions for part-time students take place on no more than two days per week. However, the part-time route block teaching practice modules are full-time. The full-time course runs over three terms from September, ending in July the following year. The part-time course runs over six terms from September in the first year to July in the second year.

The delivery of the modules is often workshop-based, covering professional subject and age-range methodology, as well as general pedagogical skills and all other major educational issues.

ASSESSMENT
There are assessments on course work, teaching practice and the achievement of The Department for Education for the award of QTS. You will also undertake written assessments and some presentations derived from both faculty-based modules and school experiences.

FURTHER STUDY
Our MA Education and Masters in Teaching and Learning (MTL) programmes are designed to serve the continuing professional development (CPD) needs of teachers. On successful completion of the PGCE course you will be entitled to enter these programmes. Master's level credits from the PGCE course will count towards the Master's qualifications.

EMPLOYABILITY
Our graduates are highly successful in finding teaching posts and many take jobs in the West Midlands.

Course structure

This course is developed in accordance with the requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage framework (EYFS) and the primary curriculum.

The university-based studies comprise group work and independent study, seminars and lecture sessions. Here you will study the newly revised primary curriculum as well as a broad spectrum of issues concerning teaching and learning. Your studies will encompass both area of learning specific sessions as well as integrated project learning that spans multiple areas. The links between theory and practice will be explored throughout the year. In addition to your university-based studies, the course includes two block school placements to help you gain an understanding of both the Key Stage 1 and the Foundation Stage settings. You will also spend an additional three weeks in an early years or primary school setting, focusing on classroom-based research and group teaching.

Areas of study

This is an intensive year, approximately half of which is spent in partnership schools/settings where the training of student teachers is a shared activity between the university and practitioners. Students take six taught modules (in addition to the two school placement modules). These sessions support and extend the school/practice-based study so that links between theory and practice are explored throughout the year.

The Education Studies programme develops students' understanding of the processes through which learning occurs, including an appreciation of individual differences and the study of the principles and practices of learning and teaching. Students study the National Curriculum at Key Stage 1 and the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum with modules that support the development of subject knowledge in curriculum areas as well as the themes and principles relevant to the Early Years.

The design of the course is underpinned by modules that facilitate students' engagement with subject curriculum areas (KS1) and the Early Years Foundation Stage 6 areas of learning as well as the skills and dispositions that encourage a confident, meaningful and creative interpretation of the curriculum.

A discrete Early Years studies module focuses on the distinct nature of the context and age-phase specific issues, eg transition, partnership with families and parents and leadership. Students learn about the role of play, the environment, the role of the Early Years practitioner and value of talk and sustained shared thinking as integral to all modules. The Professional Studies module provides students with the skills necessary for the role of the reflective and critical teacher and this includes some study at masters-level. All students are enrolled onto the Postgraduate Certificate in Education but an alternative exit award, the Professional Graduate Certificate in Education, which also includes QTS, is available for students who do not achieve the masters-level elements of the postgraduate programme.

London Met has School Direct partnership with nearly 100 schools. This large body of schools have joined with us to build a cross-capital alliance, providing diverse contexts in which to train the new generation of London teachers.

Most of our trainees follow a programme modelled on the traditional PGCE, with time spent under tutor supervision at London Metropolitan University and the school placement divided between two partner schools.

Moving to one campus

Between 2016 and 2020 we're investing £125 million in the London Metropolitan University campus, moving all of our activity to our current Holloway campus in Islington, north London. This will mean the teaching location of some courses will change over time.

Whether you will be affected will depend on the duration of your course, when you start and your mode of study. The earliest moves affecting new students will be in September 2017. General Primary programme

Early Years programme
This programme allows you to focus your training on work with children aged from three to seven years of age. You spend time in nursery classes, as well as teaching children of school age in both Reception and Key Stage 1 classes. You follow the same range of courses as those on the General Primary programme, in addition to an advanced study of early years education.
Both of these programmes will qualify you to teach children aged 3 - 11 years.

School-based experiences are a central part of these programmes, with an opportunity for you to experience a range of ages within different schools. Both programmes also feature a range of professional courses to help you plan, teach, and develop your classroom skills. The programmes are designed, in conjunction with partnership schools, to meet the Teachers' Standards for the Award of Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). The high quality personalised support, ensures that the majority of our students exceed the teachers's standards at an outstanding level (Ofsted report 2013).

Northumbria University is a centre of excellence for initial teacher education, this innovative high quality distance learning Early Primary course has been specifically developed to provide a route for students wishing to achieve a PGCE in Early Primary Education with Qualified Teacher Status. It has been especially designed to facilitate students who prefer both a school based and distance based route into teaching and require a longer trajectory of study due to work and life commitments. Students complete the programme in two years.

In addition to this students are also given the opportunity to develop a subject specialism as part of their study.

This Early Primary (Blended) course is divided into two parts. Assessment

The content of the programme will reflect the curricula requirements of the Foundation Stage and National Curriculum for England. There will also be tasks and assignments that will relate to the extended life of a school, educational theory and a wider understanding of the roles and responsibilities of the teacher.

Our PGCE students experience great success in entering teaching straight away. Career opportunities include teaching in maintained and independent nursery, infant, junior, primary, first and middle schools, as well as in other areas of education, such as Children's Centres and other early years settings.

This part-time work-based course provides intensive specialist training in becoming an early years teacher that will enable you to gain the Early Years Teacher Status in one year. Alongside you will also complete a Postgraduate Certificate in Professional Studies in Education (60 masters-level credits) which may count towards a full masters qualification.

What will you study?

You will gain a greater understanding of what it is to be an early years teacher within the Early Years Foundation Stage and the knowledge that underpins the delivery of this to babies and children in the birth to five years age range. Topics covered include, safeguarding and child protection, early literacy and phonics, early maths, personalised progress and tracking and leadership and management.

As an early years teacher, you play an essential role in children's development between birth and the age of five, providing high-quality early education. By training to deliver the Early Years Foundation Stage whilst undertaking the Graduate Employment Based course, you will learn how to use your knowledge and skills to ensure children benefit from a high standard of early years teaching.

Employment of early years teachers

The Government wants to give more autonomy to headteachers so that they can decide who is best qualified and suited to teach in their schools. Early years teachers will be specialists in birth to five years old and will be ideally placed to fulfil the needs of employers in private and independent settings and schools to provide high-quality education and care for babies and young children. Settings and schools are able to take advantage of changes introduced in September 2013 that mean that head teachers will have even more flexibility and freedom on pay and will be able to place staff on the most appropriate point on the relevant pay scales.

Training and assessment pathway

The Graduate Employment Based pathway is designed for graduates in an early years setting who require some additional training and further experience to demonstrate the Teachers' Standards (Early Years).

Trainees will be required to undertake a the minimum of a two-week alternative placement in an appropriate early years setting as well as 10 days in a Key Stage 1 school. However, depending on experience this may be extended to four weeks if it is identified that the trainee requires more experience in a specific age group within an early years setting.
