This degree equips students with the skills to enable them to operate effectively in the e-business environment and to manage or lead either the transformation of existing business processes or creation of new e-business activity; the programme is suitable for graduates from information technology, engineering or science backgrounds and also management students with a keen interest in technology and how it can be used effectively to promote competitiveness. The course will provide the techniques to manage the strategic development of e-business based organisations and appropriate enabling e-business technologies. Students learn how to evaluate, manage and improve the operational functions of an organisation and apply the concepts of systems integration to the design and development of products and services through market analysis.

Course Structure

The course is modular - each student takes a combination of core and elective modules. 9 modules are studied and assessed in total. Modules consist of nominally 40 hours directed tuition in the form of lectures, seminars, group work, presentations, case studies and e-learning. This is covered in a full-immersion, intensive week. Modules are assessed by Post Module Assignment. The taught modules account for 50% of the Master's degree. A major individual research project, submitted in the form of a dissertation accounts for the other 50%. An oral examination is held upon completion. The core modules are:

Project

The project is worth 50% of the final grade and supports you in developing your personal research skills. For e-Business Management the project should normally be related to management or technology-related issues in companies involved in e-Business and e-Commerce. Examples of some projects are:

  • Investigation of virtual communities for competitive advantage.
  • Measuring success for business websites.
  • Technical computing projects/systems design.
  • The impact of mass-customisation in the on-line environment.
  • The impact of Distributed Denial of Service attacks on SMEs.
  • Comparison of effectiveness of online advertising to traditional media.

After you Graduate

Graduates can be expected to go on to work in information technology and software related companies or enterprises with existing or developing online e-business initiatives, particularly, but not exclusively, those in the engineering and/or manufacturing sector. Many recent graduates have gone into e-business consultancy roles and positions such as Business Information Manager (HP), Quality Assurance Lead (IBM), Global Application Specialist (Mars) Business Amalyst (PWC) Consultant (SAP China) Audit Assistant (KPMG).

This course addresses the need to propel information-gathering and data organisation, and exploit potential information and knowledge hidden in routinely collected data to improve decision-making. The course, which builds on the strength of two successful courses on data mining and on decision sciences, is more technology focused, and stretches the data mining and decision sciences theme to the broader agenda of business intelligence.

You will focus on developing solutions to real-world problems associated with the changing nature of IT infrastructure and increasing volumes of data, through the use of applications and case studies, while gaining a deep appreciation of the underlying models and techniques. You will also gain a greater understanding of the impact technological advances have on nature and practices adopted within the business intelligence and analytics practices, and know how to adapt to these changes.

Embedded into the course are two key themes. The first will help you to develop your skills in the use and application of various technologies, architectures, techniques, tools and methods. These include warehousing and data mining, distributed data management, and the technologies, architectures, and appropriate middleware and infrastructures supporting application layers. The second theme will enhance your knowledge of algorithms and the quantitative techniques suitable for analysing and mining data and developing decision models in a broad range of application areas. The project consolidates the taught subjects covered, while giving you the opportunity to pursue in-depth study in your chosen area.

Teaching approaches include lectures, tutorials, seminars and practical sessions. You will also learn through extensive course work, class presentations, group research work, and the use of a range of industry standard software such as R, Python, Simul8, Palisade Decision Tools, Hadoop and Oracle.

Taught modules may be assessed entirely through course work, or may include a two-hour exam at the end of the year.

Note that there are additional requirements, including work experience, to achieve full CITP, CEng, or IEng status. Graduates of this accredited degree will also be eligible for professional membership of BCS (MBCS).

What is the 'Master of Business Engineering' all about?

A business engineer is trained for analyzing and solving business problems from a quantitative and managerial point of view. The programme belongs to the domain of business economics and is management oriented: students learn how companies function, how business processes should be designed and how business activities can be optimally organized. The managerial focus is combined with strong analytical skills and a profound understanding of how business and (technological) innovation processes work. This integration of disciplines is of high relevance to production environments as well as to service companies (e.g. consultancy or ICT).

A business engineer is an interdisciplinary manager with an extended problem solving toolbox and a holistic view on modern companies in today’s economic, legal and social context. With a capacity for analytical thought, management and communication skills and an eye for sustainable opportunities, business engineers are able to shape the future of companies and organisations.

Structure

The Master of Science in Business Engineering is organised at two campuses: Brussels and Leuven. The programmes share a common structure and have the same compulsory courses. Objectives

A business engineer is trained for analyzing and solving business problems from a quantitative and managerial point of view. The programme belongs to the domain of business economics and is management oriented: students learn how companies function, how business processes should be designed and how business activities can be optimally organized. The managerial focus is combined with strong analytical skills and a profound understanding of how business and (technological) innovation processes work. This integration of disciplines is of high relevance to production environments as well as to service companies (e.g. consultancy or ICT).A business engineer is an interdisciplinary manager with an extended problem solving toolbox and a holistic view on modern companies in today's economic, legal and social context. With a capacity for analytical thought, management and communication skills and an eye for sustainable opportunities, business engineers are able to shape the future of companies and organisations.

Career perspectives

 Graduates of the MSc in Business Engineering mostly take up managerial and/or research positions in business, national and international institutions, and at universities. Business engineers usually start their careers in technical expert positions within interdisciplinary management teams. They are typically hired to optimise production processes, to develop quantitative models in financial institutions, or to market technological innovations. They are also able to take up more traditional management tasks, armed with the ability to support key decisions using quantitative analyses. Business engineers quickly move up to executive functions in various management domains in companies and organisations. Given the variety of skills acquired, they are highly sought after by a wide range of companies – from start-ups and small firms to multinational corporations – for various positions in Belgium and abroad.
