Sophia University's Graduate Programme in Global Studies (GPGS) and the Department of Japan and Korea at SOAS, University of London have launched a Dual Degree Program (DDP) which allows students to benefit from the combined resources of two of the world's leading institutions in Japanese Studies, located in two major global cities – Tokyo and London.

Students will typically study one year at GPGS and one year at SOAS and, after fulfilling the requirements of the two programmes, receive two degrees: an MA from Sophia and an MA from SOAS.

DDP students widen their intellectual horizons by taking classes at two of the world’s leading institutions in Japanese Studies. Supervision of student theses or graduation projects by prominent scholars at both institutions encourages multiple perspectives on Japanese Studies.

Applications from GPGS students for study at SOAS starting in September are now being accepted.

Students entering the GPGS in April typically apply for admission to SOAS during their 1st semester, spend their 2nd and 3rd semesters at SOAS, and return to Sophia in their 4th semester to complete their GPGS requirements.

Students entering the GPGS in September typically apply for admission to SOAS in their 2nd semester, spend their 3rd and 4th semesters at SOAS, and return to Sophia in their 5th semester to complete the GPGS requirements.

Faculty of Languages and Cultures

Six of the academic departments are devoted to teaching and research in the languages, literatures and cultures of Africa, China and Inner Asia, Japan and Korea, the Near and Middle East, South Asia, and South East Asia, with the seventh teaching and conducting research in Linguistics. The Language Centre caters to the needs of non-degree students and governmental and non-governmental organisations. It maintains a huge portfolio of courses, including year-long diploma programmes, weekly evening classes in about 40 different African and Asian languages, and tailored intensive one-to-one courses. The Language Centre also offers courses in French, Portuguese and Spanish.

Their teaching is in three main areas:
- language competence acquisition;
- textual and cultural studies - both comparative and language-specific, and covering not only 'literature' in a strict sense but also visual media, performance, folklore, translation etc.;
- language studies with linguistics at its core - including the prestigious Hans Rausing Endangered Languages Project.

The Faculty is also home to the Centre for Cultural, Literary and Postcolonial Studies (CCLPS) (http://www.soas.ac.uk/cclps/).

While SOAS as a whole represents the most substantial concentration in the Western world of expertise dedicated to African, Middle Eastern and Asian studies, the Faculty of Languages and Cultures is heavily committed to teaching and research grounded in a knowledge of the principal languages and cultures of two thirds of humankind.

Department of the Languages and Cultures of Japan and Korea

SOAS is unique in the depth and breadth of its regional specialisation and is home to the largest collection of Japan specialists outside of Japan, and the largest concentration of Korean specialists in Europe. The diversified expertise of the Japan and Korea departments allows you to gain focused specialist knowledge in the regions of your interest, both in their classical traditions as well as their contemporary developments, together with more or less intensive study of their languages, both at SOAS and at our many prestigious partner universities in Japan and Korea. In the study of each discipline, we combine theoretical and textual approaches, and cross-examine critically both the western intellectual tradition as well as the regional ones.

The MPA + MS Nursing Dual-Degree Program prepares students for nursing administrator positions in hospitals, health care facilities and community health agencies. Nurses who advance to administrative positions often find themselves struggling with their new responsibilities related to budgetary, human resources, organizational, policy and management matters. The dual-degree program is designed to ensure that students not only advance their professional nursing credentials, but also develop knowledge and skills for effective management. The dual-degree program is targeted specifically to students in the Community Health Nursing program who have selected the Nurse Administrator role.

By carefully structuring the sequence of courses, recognizing comparable course offerings, and using courses in one program to count as electives in the other, students are often able to complete both degrees in three years of full-time study without compromising the professional standards of either program.

Successful completion of the dual-degree programs results in two degrees: a Master's in Public Administration (MPA) and a Master of Science (MS) in Nursing.

The MPA-MS Nursing Dual Degree Program

The Master of Public Administration (MPA) housed in the College of Community and Public Affairs and Master of Science in Nursing (MS Nursing) housed in the Decker School of Nursing offer a dual MPA-MS Nursing degree program to provide students at Binghamton University with a unique opportunity. By carefully structuring the sequence of courses, recognizing comparable course offerings and using courses in one program to count as electives in the other, the MPA-MS Nursing dual degree program allows students to complete both degrees in three years of full-time study, without compromising the professional standards of either program. The 42-credit hour MPA program and the 48-credit hour MS Nursing program can be completed as part of a 68-credit hour program (rather than 90 credit hours required to complete the two programs without the benefit of the dual degree structure).
The MPA-MS Nursing Dual Degree Program prepares students for nursing administrator positions in hospitals, health care facilities and community health agencies. Nurses who advance to administrative positions often find themselves struggling with their new responsibilities related to budgetary, human resources, organizational, policy and management matters. The dual-degree program is designed to ensure that students not only advance their professional nursing credentials, but also develop knowledge and skills for effective management. The dual-degree program takes advantage of the complementary foci of the two degree programs. Both programs have a clear commitment to preparing students to help their communities through advanced professional knowledge and skills. Accordingly, the dual degree emphasizes community health and professional management to prepare nurses to be effective administrators. The dual degree is targeted specifically to students in the Community Health Nursing program who have selected the Nurse Administrator role.
Students must apply and be admitted to both the MPA program and the MS Nursing program. These are separate applications and each requires an application fee to the Graduate School. Students who begin one program and then apply to the other program later will need to meet with the appropriate advisors for both programs to develop a customized program of study; completion within three years may not be possible for students who do not begin the programs in the same semester.

All applicants must submit the following:

The MPA + MS Student Affairs Administration Dual-Degree Program prepares students for administrative positions in college and university settings.

To be an effective leader in student affairs, professionals must first be knowledgeable of how students grow and develop during the college years and how institutions can be intentional in facilitating the growth process. Leaders in higher education need to employ proven managerial strategies in order to be successful and must pay careful attention to the management of human resources, finances, information technology, and physical infrastructure. In addition to this, leaders should know how to adjust their administrative style if problems are encountered and be able to ground both successes and shortcomings in administrative theory.

The MPA-MSAA dual degree will prepare students for administrative positions in college and university settings. The MSAA program provides specialized training for students desiring to work in student affairs offices, while the MPA provides the knowledge and skills necessary for management. To be an effective leader in student affairs, professionals must first be knowledgeable of how students grow and develop during the college years and how institutions can be intentional in facilitating the growth process. This requires the study of organizational and student development theory as well as gaining hands-on experience in at least one student services office. This Joint Degree between HEC Paris and Ecole Polytechnique will equip students with both the technical skills and the strategic mindset to lead successfully any business career requiring a strong expertise in Big Data.

STUDY IN TWO GLOBALLY-RECOGNIZED INSTITUTIONS

Ecole Polytechnique (https://www.polytechnique.edu/en) and HEC Paris are both world leading academic institutions, renowned for the quality of their degrees, faculties and research (see HEC rankings http://www.hec.edu/Masters-programs/About/Rankings).

Their association within this Joint Degree represents the best Business/Engineering combination Europe could possibly offer, with extraordinary added value for the students who will follow this program in Big Data and Business.

LEAD THE DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION OF THE ECONOMY

Big data marks the beginning of a major transformation of the digital economy, which will significantly impact all industries. There are three main challenges to face:

> Technological: dealing with the explosion of data by managing the spread of vast amounts of information that is often very disorganized (IP addresses, fingerprinting, website logs, static web or warehouse data, social media, etc.)
> Scientific: replacing mass data with knowledge,i.e. developing the expertise that makes it possible to structure information, even out of tons of vague or corrupt data.
> Economic: managing data both to control risks and benefit from the new opportunities they offer. On the one hand, it is absolutely vital to be able to control the flow of information, anticipate data leaks, keep the information secure and ensure privacy. On the other hand, it is also essential to come up with solutions capable of transforming this flow of data into economic results and, at the same time, discover new sources of value from the data.

ACQUIRE THE SKILLS TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN TOMORROW’S DIGITAL WORLD

Exploiting this vast amount of data requires the following:

> A mastery of the sophisticated mathematical techniques needed to extract the relevant information.
> An advanced understanding of the fields where this knowledge can be applied in order to be in a position to interpret the analysis results and make strategic decisions.
> A strong business mindset and an even stronger strategic expertise, to be able to fully benefit from the new opportunities involved with Big Data problematics and develop business solutions accordingly.
> The ability to suggest and then decide on the choice of IT structures, the ability to follow major changes in IT systems, etc.

Therefore the program has three objectives:

> To train students in data sciences which combines mathematic modelling, statistics, IT and visualization to convert masses of information into knowledge.
> To give students the tools to understand the newest data distributing structures and large scale calculations to ease decision-making and guide them in their choices.
> To form data ‘managers’ capable of exploiting the results from analysis to make strategic decisions at the heart of our changeable businesses.

MAKE THE MOST OF WORLDWIDE NETWORKING AND ALUMNI POWER

Students will benefit not only from the close ties that HEC Paris has developed with the business world but also those of Ecole Polytechnique, through various networking events, conferences and career fairs.

The HEC Alumni network alone, consists of more than 52,300 members in 127 countries.

CAREERS

As “Big Data” affects all kinds of companies and all sectors, students will have a very large range of career options upon graduation, from consulting firms to digital start-ups, not to mention very large multi-national companies.
In fact, as can be seen in all areas of cutting-edge innovation, there is a growing demand for high level managers who can combine strong technical skill with business know-how.

This is especially true when it comes to Big Data topics, and students graduating from data science and Big Data programs are therefore highly sought after on the job market.

HEC Paris’ Master in Management (MiM) is the international students’ gateway to the prestigious Grande Ecole program and a fantastic world of opportunities.

WORLD-CLASS STUDENT BODY

The Grande Ecole program is designed for high potential students from all backgrounds with little or no professional experience, driven to become influential leaders in tomorrow’s world.

Our 2014 intake included students from more than 40 nationalities, with half coming from outside Europe - http://www.hec.edu/Masters-programs/Master-s-Programs/Grande-Ecole/Master-in-Management/Meet-the-Students#block-21437

A UNIQUE TWO-PHASE CURRICULUM TO BOOST YOUR CAREER

The Grande Ecole curriculum (http://www.hec.edu/Masters-programs/Master-s-Programs/Grande-Ecole/Master-in-Management/Program-Details) is divided into a generalist phase and a specialization phase. The first phase concentrates on business fundamentals while the second one focuses on acquiring expertise around the professional goals of the student. The nature of the specialization determines the Master’s degree that the student will finally receive: Management, Management & Business Law, Management and Public Affairs…

This unique curriculum structure enables students to acquire both an excellent grounding in general management and an expertise in a specific field. We firmly believe this combination is the key success factor in training future leaders and making a lasting impact on the careers of our students. In fact, our graduates combine the rare ability to grasp the ‘global picture’ in all situations and a deep understanding that only experts can truly reach.

The program consists of:

> in M1: mandatory foundation courses in general management, electives and a managerial behavior seminar
> in M2: a specialization, an optional certificate and an in-depth research paper.

Moreover, the Grande Ecole program perfectly balances the development of practical leadership and professional skills with the more theoretical requirements, such as a final research paper within the specialization. Students are trained to become decision-makers while focusing on the academic specialization that they choose in light of their professional goals. With the diversity of courses and specializations available, students can develop expertise in several areas of business administration, shape their career plans, all while preparing their entry into the business world through company internships.

A WIDE RANGE OF SPECIALIZATIONS

In M2, students have access to a wide range of specializations, which then determine the Master’s degree that the student will finally receive:

> Master in Management: Strategy, Finance, Marketing, Financial Economics, Economics, Entrepreneurship, etc.
> Master in Public Affairs: Public Policy, International Relations, Diplomacy
> Master in Business Law
> Master in Sustainability and Social Innovation
> Master in Journalism (taught in French only)
> Master in Media, Arts & Creation (taught in French only)
> Master in Cognitive Sciences (with ENS Ulm)
