Course Overview

Critical attention on this programme is focused especially on continuities and discontinuities between the medieval and early modern periods. For example, Anglo-Saxon heroic literature may be studied in conjunction with the heroic mode of the English Renaissance epic, and medieval dream poetry in conjunction with early modern literary (as well as philosophical and medical) representations of psychological disorders.

The programme is underpinned by advanced research methods, the study of theoretically informed critical approaches, and the scholarly examination of manuscripts and early printed books.

Key Features

The MA in Medieval and Early Modern Literature is taught on-campus and as a distance-learning programme. When delivered on the University’s campus in Lampeter, the modules are taught through seminars, small workshops and individual tutorials and supervision that enable detailed and personalised feedback. For campus-based students, access to a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) enables additional learning. Moodle, our VLE, is a live forum through which students and staff can interact, whereby students are better able to revise and explore topics and access electronic resources. It is the primary learning interface for distance-learning students.

Assessment

The MA in Medieval and Early Modern Literature involves a wide range of assessment methods. Assessment is through a mixture of assignment and presentation supported by tasks designed to enhance research skills. In addition to traditional essays, you will be assessed through bibliographical exercises, creation of research project proposals, presentations – oral and PowerPoint-based, editorial exercises, and the dissertation. This variety of assessment inculcates the development of skills in presenting academic and scholarly material in a clear, professional manner, whether orally or in writing. For the majority of assignments students choose their own topic on which to be assessed in relation to each module, always in consultation with the module tutor. You will receive a sound practical and theoretical grounding in scientific use of experiments in archaeological research. The programme will give you practical experience of experiments related to archaeological and taphonomic processes and the production of a range of material culture types including ceramics, stone tools, metals and a range of organic materials.

The role of experiments and ‘reconstructions’ in education and public outreach is investigated through classes, practical activities, and field visits. Links with professionals, such as museums and independent establishments, provide opportunities for practical work based on a sound appreciation of theory.

The University has established an outdoor centre on its Streatham Campus to provide a location for both short- and long-term experimental archaeology research. The programmes involve practical work and field trips.

Learning and teaching

The MA in Professional Translation MAPT (previously Translation with Language Technology) is an integrated programme designed to turn entrants with proven excellence in foreign languages into successful and marketable professional linguists.

Key Features of MA in Professional Translation

The MA in Professional Translation belongs to the European Master's in Translation Network which currently has 64 members throughout Europe with Swansea University being the only EMT member in Wales.

At the core of the MA in Professional Translation lies advanced translation work on general, administrative and technical text types, and training in industry-standard Computer-Assisted Translation (CAT) tools. Part 1 of the Professional Translation degree also includes opportunities to develop specialised skills in Public Service Interpreting, audiovisual translation, machine translation (MT) and software localization, terminology management, video making or digital publishing, while in the Translation Work Experience module students form simulated translation companies, working with local translation businesses, and undertake real commissions to professional standards and deadlines.

These different skills come together in a choice of Part 2 projects: either two Extended Translations of the student’s choice, or an academic Dissertation, or a 13-week Internship in a translation company, in the UK or abroad.

Course Content

Part One – Full-time Professional Translation students take three 20-credit (10 ECTS) modules in each of two academic semesters, while part-time students can distribute the same work flexibly over four semesters. There are three compulsory modules: Foundations of Translation and Interpreting, Translation Tools, and one Advanced Translation module from the range of language pairs listed above. Professional Translation students then choose three optional modules. These include: a second Advanced Translation module, History and Theory of Translation, one or two modules in Interpreting, Translation Technologies, Audiovisual Adaptation (subtitling, dubbing, audio description), Terminology Management, Translation Work Experience, or (subject to numbers) Video and Documentary Making, or Visual Communication and Media Design. There is also the option to study a new language intensively (French, German, Italian, Mandarin or Spanish), or to pick up again at intermediate level a language (French, German, or Spanish) not studied since secondary school.

Part Two - An individual project of 60 credits (30 ECTS) which full-time Professional Translation students undertake over the summer (by 15 September), while part-time students have up to a further year. The project can take three forms:

- Two Extended Translations with commentary. These are chosen by the Professional Translation student and offer the opportunity to develop domains of specialisation. At least one must be technical and must be performed using a major CAT tool; or

- Dissertation (15,000-20,000 words). This can be, for instance, on a topic in Translation Studies, a comparison of two or more published translations, terminology research in a specialised domain, or an investigation into aspects of translation technology. The dissertation offers excellent preparation for PhD work, but can also be a valuable indicator of professional expertise (e.g. in terminology or CAT tools); or

- Internship (13 weeks full time, part time pro rata). This is the most vocational option and can be undertaken either in the UK or abroad. We make our extensive list of professional contacts available to students but they must make their own application to companies and pass admissions tests. A successful internship may turn into a first job.

The MA develops your understanding of historical and contemporary debates in (socio)linguistics and discourse analysis and enhances your analytic and linguistic skills by introducing different approaches to the analysis of written and spoken language use from a range of everyday and institutional contexts.

Learning & teaching

Classes differ significantly from traditional formal lectures. Academic staff maximise opportunities for class discussion and debate about how organisations are tackling real-life business issues and whether their approaches are appropriate in other contexts.

You’ll often be given individual or group-based research tasks to be fed back in class. This emphasis upon practical skills gives you a greater understanding of what’s happening in a wide range of organisational contexts. It also helps you to be able to formulate relevant, practical, responses to the complex issues.

Our teaching is focused on helping you to develop the high level of personal and interpersonal skills that employers are looking for. You’ll find that, from your very first day, we’ll be there helping you to find effective ways to manage yourself, while getting the best from those you're working with.

Through workshops, and in classes, we’ll help you to perfect your ability to communicate the insights you get from the analytical techniques we teach and the research you undertake.

- Living case study
The Living case study is an innovative way of bringing participants to an understanding of what it means to deal with organisational issues at a managerial level. The exercise casts participants in the role of a graduate trainee who has been asked by the management director to analyse the behaviours in the company and present to the board a way forward.
Management consultancy firm Accenture regularly attend the final presentations. These presentations showcase the professionalism of the cohort and the analytic skills they have acquired through this and the other classes that make up the syllabus. Accenture’s experienced consultants recognise the type of issues and behaviours recreated in the simulation and provide hints and tips on dealing with problem situations and communicating ideas to executives.

Guest lectures

All classes on the MBM programme have a number of guest speakers from industry. You're also regularly invited to Business School industry lectures and networking events.

Have you been writing creatively for a while and feel the need for some professional support? Do you wish to be read by like-minded people? For 13 years, our MA Creative Writing has been enabling students to achieve some, if not all, of these goals. In 2016 alone, 11 of our graduates published novels with major publishing houses (http://www.bbk.ac.uk/english/news/creative-writing-alumni-success).

The course is taught through small, dynamic seminars and one-to-one tuition. We offer modules in fiction writing and options in playwriting, poetry, screenwriting and creative non-fiction.

All teaching is done by regularly published and produced award-winning writers, who will help you strengthen and professionalise your identity as a writer. Students have opportunities to interact with publishers and agents to broaden their understanding of the market and will be eligible to submit work for publication in the annual Birkbeck Creative Writing journal, The Mechanics' Institute Review and MIROnline.

The MA consists of five compulsory modules and one elective module plus a dissertation or major project. The PGDip consists of five compulsory modules and one elective module. Compulsory modules and optional modules are listed below.

In today's workplace, HR professionals must tackle many different employment issues. Southampton Solent University’s postgraduate human resource management programme offers students an in-depth understanding of HR management functions and the business contexts that underpin them.

You’ll have the opportunity to undertake a six-week work placement. During this placement, you’ll work on live projects for companies and produce a research project for your CIPD accreditation.

Past students have completed placements and projects with the Maritime and Coastguard Agency, the NHS, Sainsbury’s, the University of Winchester and many other organisations.

Graduation is the ceremony to celebrate the achievements of your studies. For graduates in 2015, there is no charge to attend graduation, but you will be required to pay for the rental of your academic gown (approximately £42 per graduate, depending on your award). You may also wish to purchase official photography packages, which range in price from £15 to £200+. Graduation is not compulsory, so if you prefer to have your award sent to you, there is no cost.

Creative Writing at Northumbria enjoys international recognition for the quality of teaching and research, and our publications in Creative Writing and English Studies are ranked 15th in the country for their quality, by the 2014 Research Excellence Framework.

Our Creative Writing team is made up of award-winning novelist and poets, who are major figures in their field. Furthermore, through our partnership with New Writing North, the foremost literary promotion agency in the north of England, we give you opportunities to meet and learn from agents, publishers, and writers from across the country.

Teaching And Assessment

We aim to challenge you, to offer new insights and ways of thinking, while providing a firm grounding in creative writing techniques. You’re encouraged to experiment with and develop your own writing voice while being aware of the demands of the writing industry.

Workshops, seminars, critiquing sessions and small groups led by writers and editors provide an intellectually stimulating environment within which you can develop confidence in literary forms and techniques.

You’ll produce a portfolio of creative writing, including an accompanying commentary for assessment for each module. This is a substantial body of work that demonstrates your ability to develop your own writing voice and edit your own work.

You will build up your skills through core and option modules assessed by formative (non-graded) and summative (graded) assignments. A virtual learning platform (Blackboard) offers you space to share ideas, engage with interactive tasks and access online resources including reading lists.

Learning Environment

Humanities at Northumbria is composed of three subject teams: History, Literature & Creative Writing, and English Language & Linguistics, and is also developing strengths in the fields of American Studies and Heritage Studies.

The Humanities department is made up of a community of learners all the way through from first year undergraduate to final year PhD level. All Humanities staff are engaged in research and actively create the knowledge that is taught in the department. Our Creative Writing team are all published and highly acclaimed for their work.

Creative Writing students, as part of Northumbria’s Humanities department, have access to the new Institute for Humanities which houses a range of specialist research resources. You’ll also get the chance to work with a range of cultural partners including New Writing North, who provide unique opportunities for creative writers.

The research of the Institute brings together the disciplines of Art History, American Studies, Creative Writing, English Language and Linguistics, English Literature, History and Media Studies.

We are recognised for world-leading research in all our Humanities’ disciplines. Our staff have attracted major funding from Research Councils UK as well as the British Academy, Leverhulme Trust and Nuffield Foundation.

The Creative Writing team work across a range of genres and their interests encompass everything from identity, displacement and narratives of cultural difference to astronomy and visual perception, and how we represent animals in language.

You will join a lively community that regularly gives public readings and, through our association with the regional writing agency New Writing North, is formally involved with the Durham Book Festival and the Northern Writers' Awards.

Furthermore, you will have the opportunity to engage with the activities of the Institute for Humanities, which is home to five international journals and which regularly hosts an exciting range of seminars, symposia and conferences on topics as varied as Memory, Heritage and Identity; Transnationalism and Societal Change; Digital Humanities; Medical Humanities; and American Studies.

Employability, in the form of critical and creative skills, presentation skills and reflective and evaluative abilities, is embedded into your course. You will be able to demonstrate that you are self-motivated, show initiative and personal responsibility, and possess a thirst for independent learning.

During your course, you’ll be in constant contact with a range of professionals working in the arts and creative industries, helping you to build up networks and gain relevant experience.

All modules play a crucial role in developing the advanced skills and attributes necessary for employment, including effective time and workload management, oral and written communication, teamwork and creative analysis of complex problems. The core module, Professional Practice, is designed to give you insight into the world of literary publishing.

You will graduate with a qualification which may enhance your promotion prospects in professions such as the literary industries, partnerships and agencies, marketing and advertising.

Your Future

Given the postgraduate nature of this course the tutors (all published writers themselves) will be looking for signs of the ability to write at a professional level.

MA graduates have achieved notable success. Dan Smith publishes novels for adults and younger readers, most recently Boy X. Celia Bryce is an acclaimed novelist whose book Anthem for Jackson Dawes was nominated for the Carnegie Medal in 2014.

Helen Laws is a highly successful TV scriptwriter who originated 32 Brinkburn Street for BBC TV and has written for Casualty, Eastenders, Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps, Shameless and Doctors. She says the MA taught her the importance of story and gave her the confidence to keep trying.

There are also opportunities for you to advance your studies further with advice in writing PhD and funding applications available.

Accounting and Finance professionals have central roles in all types and sizes of organisations whether in the UK or abroad. This programme is likely to be of interest to current or intending finance or accounting professionals wishing to gain an academic qualification in both domestic and international financial operations.

The course offers a specialist pathway in accounting (linked to the ACCA Fundamentals papers), but also provides you with the opportunity to select modules in the areas of finance and strategy. This programme focuses on accounting and finance matters within an international context, addressing current challenges and issues faced by businesses and companies around the world.

You'll be provided with analytical and business-led tools that combine academic study with a pragmatic and well structured finance content for decision making (including the use of databases such as Bloomberg and Thompson One-Banker). The course also includes training in specialist software (SPSS and N-Vivo).

You'll take part in a residential weekend, exchanging experiences and discussing current events and specific problems affecting the accountancy and finance fields, with academics and a visiting practitioner.

You'll benefit from a wide range of extra-curricular activities including "Academic skills for Finance, Accounting and Governance" and Research Techniques, a range of Bloomberg Aptitude Tests, specialist visitor speakers, and expert symposiums and conferences.

There may be a possibility to undertake an optional work placement to enhance your employability skills and professional experience (subject to validation).

Plus two elective modules from the areas of accounting, finance, banking, law, corporate governance and strategic management.

You'll also have the option to undertake a work placement. If you choose to do so, the dissertation may be linked to your placement experience.

All modules are assessed by a mix of coursework, individual and group presentations and written exams. A typical taught module involves a total of 200 study hours (52 contact hours and 148 group and private study hours).

The use of Bloomberg and Thomson-One Banker are embedded within modules.

Graduates who possess a combination of an LSBU Masters degree and a professional accounting qualification are likely to be highly employable in senior positions in accounting and finance, not only in the UK but throughout the world. In addition to academic rigour, the Masters is highly oriented to support your professional development.

There may be a possibility of an optional placement in a relevant business area to enable you to enhance your employability skills and apply accounting and finance theory to contemporary business practices.

If you take part in a placement, the dissertation may be linked to your placement experience. A placement is not currently offered on the part-time mode.

Facilities

Specialist industry software prepares our students with the digital skills that employers' value. Students on our programmes have access to Bloomberg, Thomson One Banker, SAGE, Blueprint, FAME, NVivo, and SPSS.

Teaching and learning

Lectures cover concepts which underpin and facilitate informed participative approaches to learning. Workshops, seminars, case studies and student led discussion facilitate more active modes of learning. You'll also benefit from excellent learning materials and small class sizes and receive training in the use of Bloomberg and Thomson-One Banker, and specialist software (SPSS and N-Vivo).

Assessment is by written coursework and exams. Lecturers offer a rich profile of academic and professional qualifications backed by professional teaching and/or research experience. An academic is appointed as your Dissertation/Business Project Facilitator, to offer guidance and constructive advice on the preparation of your dissertation/report.
