This part-time, flexible programme is a professional doctorate equivalent to a traditional PhD, which aims to develop experienced, working registered pharmacists into effective researchers through successful completion of appropriate distance e-learning material, a systematic review of an agreed research theme and a workplace based research project relevant to their area of practice.

The programme aims to develop experienced, employed registered pharmacists into effective researchers through successful completion of appropriate taught modules, including:

- research training
- a systematic review of an agreed research theme
- a workplace-based research project relevant to their area of practice as agreed with their academic supervisor and the College

As confirmed at local, regional and national (DH) levels successful completion of the proposed DPharm would optimise the candidate's position to achieve Consultant Pharmacist status within the NHS and further the research base in Pharmacy Practice and Medicines Management.

Due to the flexible nature of the programme this research can be done part-time to fit around your working patterns. The programme runs over 4 years part time for students who already hold a relevant MSc qualification; 5 years part time for students who hold a relevant PG Diploma; 6 years part time for students with minimum entry qualifications (PG Certificate).

The Professional Doctorate is an alternative pathway to a doctorate qualification. It is a rigorous programme of advanced study and research, designed specifically to meet the needs of commerce, industry and professional groups and is the professionally oriented counterpart to the more theoretical PhD. It enables students to study a specific subject to the same depth as PhD students, but also allows them to apply learning to their professional practice.

What will I experience?

The Faculty of Science offers seven health and social care programmes at doctorate level:

Doctorate in Biomedical Science (DBMS)
Doctorate in Chiropractic (DChiro)

Module Details

This is a part-time course, which has been specifically designed so that it can be available to health and social care professionals from all over the country, to fit with the demands of fulltime employment. The course structure is only offered in a part-time mode and is divided into two parts.

Attendance for Part 1 will be in six study blocks of three days duration spread over two academic years. Typically, students will be required to attend the University for up to 18 days for the whole of Part 1. Attendance for Part 2 will only be required for tutorials, seminars and oral presentations.

Part 1

This is the 'taught' component of the programme, which will equip students with the skills that they will need in preparation for Part 2. Part 1 consists of four units, namely:

This is the research and professional development component and comprises one or two pieces of practice-based research, linked with a commentary demonstrating the relevance of the research to both practice and the practitioner. This should normally take between 24 and 48 months to complete.

Assessment will be by a thesis, an oral presentation and a viva voce examination.

The University offers Accreditation for Prior Learning (APL), for applicants with previous learning experience and other academic achievement which could be taken into account for some of the units of study. Claims will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Programme Assessment

Each student will be assigned one or more University supervisors, depending on the area of research and professional development. Access to specialist advisors in the workplace will be required for Part 2 of the programme and will vary according to the area of investigation. We have excellent support systems for our Professional Doctorate students. All students are assigned a Personal Tutor for Part 1 as well as two Supervisors for Part 2 of the course.

There are further opportunities to attend Research Seminars and Workshops organised by the University's Graduate School.

The professional doctorate in pharmacy (DPharm) is an exciting route for pharmacists working in any field to achieve a doctorate qualification by undertaking advanced study in pharmacy practice.

The course is undertaken part-time whilst you continue to work in your chosen field of pharmacy practice. The DPharm course is offered in two Stages: Stage 1 consists of a taught programme, and Stage 2 involves a research project.

Along with the taught elements of Stage 1 you will be developing the depth and breadth of knowledge in your particular area of practice and in doing so, will add considerably to the value of the role you hold in your current employment.

Stage 1 successfully undertaken on its own will lead to the award of MSc in Advanced Pharmacy Practice. If you wish to study for the DPharm you will be required to successfully complete both Stages 1 and 2.

The Community Pharmacy Programme is designed principally for distance-learning. We provide mainly online distance-learning materials so that you can study where and when it is most convenient for you. Our methods of delivery allow us to revise and update the course quickly to meet your changing needs as a pharmacist.

The Community Pharmacy Programme is fully supported by a team of experienced, friendly, and approachable academic, administrative and technical staff based at Keele. The Programme is also supported by our network of experienced, practising community and primary care tutors. You’re not on your own! And, don’t forget the network of other pharmacists on the course whom you can contact. You will require the equivalent of 1-2 days (approximately 10-15 hours) each week to complete your course. Remember that the online nature of our course materials, and the fact that a good proportion of the assessed work focuses on your daily practice, means that you can integrate study and work.

Assessment is entirely by coursework for the Certificate, Diploma and MSc courses. A variety of assessment methods are used.

All of the modules contain Practice-Based Assignments that will assess your knowledge, problem-solving skills, and data interpretation skills in relation to application of knowledge to practice, patient care and medicines management. Case Presentations assess your ability to critically appraise the literature and relate published theory to everyday practice.

A Project Assignment, Project Protocol Development and the Independent Study Project Report assess ‘thinking’ and practical skills, and your ability to plan, conduct and report on an investigation. They also assess your ability to critically appraise the literature and relate published theory to everyday practice. Your Reflective Portfolio also assesses your ability to relate theory to practice, and self evaluation of, and reflection on, your own performance and CPD needs.

The nature of the assessments develops your written and oral communication skills. Practical skills and key life/transferable skills are assessed within the methods described above. Each method of assessment is supported by clear criteria for marking; these are explained in the relevant Course Handbooks. The minimum pass mark is 50%. The summative assessment is supported by a variety of formative assessment activities that include online discussions and formative feedback on elements of the reflective portfolio.

A key development for pharmacists has been the advent of independent pharmacist prescribers, new roles in medicines optimisation and supporting the management of long term conditions. Pharmacists are continually being asked to broaden their role and contribution within primary healthcare. In addition, the requirements for pharmacists to demonstrate their commitment to continual professional development is as strong as ever and is reflected in the recent General Pharmaceutical Council’s announcements regarding the assurance of the continual fitness to practice of pharmacists. Other healthcare professionals have similar requirements in relation to CPD and revalidation.

Choice and flexibility are key features of the Prescribing Studies programme.
