Course Overview

The Doctorate in Forensic Psychology is approved by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC), and is the only British Psychological Society accredited programme in Wales. Upon completion, the programme provides students with eligibility to apply to the register to practice as Forensic Psychologists in the UK, and to gain Chartered Psychologist status with the British Psychological Society (BPS).

The intake for Top-Up Doctorate takes place in January and September each year. The Top-Up Doctorate is designed for qualified Forensic Psychologists who would like to undertake a research project on an aspect of specialism. The intake for the Full Doctorate programme takes place in September each year, and we would encourage applicants to apply before June of the year they would like to commence studies.

​Course Content​​

Flexibility is the essence of our approach to student learning. The Doctorate Programme facilitates students entering and exiting at different places within the Programme depending on the individual needs of the student. Thus, the full Doctorate programme comprises:
- MSc in Forensic Psychology
- Postgraduate Diploma in Practitioner Forensic Psychology
- ‘Top-Up’ doctorate, which is the higher level research component.

The Top-Up Doctorate will be available to registered practitioners who are seeking to formalise their research and clinical skills in an area of specialism. Applicants completing the Top-Up Doctorate will submit a research thesis reporting a significantly large piece of research.

Applicants to the Doctorate Programme may apply for the Full Programme, or for the MSc or PG Diploma, depending on their own individual needs and career progression. Applicants who apply for the MSc may (on successful completion) later apply for the PG Diploma and ‘Top-Up’ Doctorate. Students, who progress through the course on individual programmes will, after successful completion of all the component programmes, be awarded the Doctorate in Forensic Psychology.

In this way, within one programme and its flexible entry and exit points, we hope to provide a full range of higher-level academic study, further training and higher level research. We are not currently accepting applications for the full Doctorate programme in its entirety.

For the Top Up Doctorate, the thesis will be a large piece of independent research study. Each student will be assigned a supervision team who will be responsible for supporting and supervising the student during their research. At least 6 supervision meetings will be held each year, and a thorough review of training needs will be established and reviewed each year. The individual needs of the student will be met through either higher level Research Methods teaching at Cardiff Metropolitan University, or specialised external training. It is anticipated that many students on the Top Up component may be based some distant from Cardiff and in those cases the supervision team will support meetings through Skype or video conferencing. However, where additional training requires students to attend the university, it is expected that the student will factor this into their time commitments.

Assessment

The programme is assessed at the MSc programme by coursework assessment; and in the work-based practice by supervision reviews, and by coursework only, there are no exams. The research thesis is assessed by viva voce examination.

Employability & Careers​

A Doctorate in Forensic Psychology incorporates both Stage 1 and Stage 2 training as set out by the British Psychological Society. The Doctorate enables graduates to gain Chartered Psychologist status with the British Psychological Society (BPS) and Registered Practitioner status with the Health Care Professionals Council (HCPC)​.

What is a Professional Doctorate about?

This type of doctorate will allow you to reflect on different elements of your professional practice and will contribute to developing evidence, practice and policy in your professional field. Whilst the Professional Doctorates does not certify competence to practice, it does provide you with an opportunity to enhance your own and others' practice.

A professionally based doctoral aims to:

What is the structure of the Professional Doctorate programme?

There are 5 modules and students normally take 5 years to complete part-time or 3 years full-time.
•Module 1 - Research Methods
•Module 2 - Literature Review
•Modules 3-5 - Research project(s) consisting of approximately 15,000 words each. It can be 3 small interconnected projects, a double project plus 1, or a single large project.

Up to two modules (one, if granted direct entry to module 2) may be overtaken by Recognition of Prior Learning.

How are Professional Doctorate programmes delivered?

The taught component of module 1 is normally delivered online, so you can complete it in your own time at a distance. If you already have a Masters degree, with an assessed element of research methods, you may not need to complete this module.

These modules are presented as a thesis and assessed by oral examination (viva voce) at the end of the programme.

How will my progress be monitored?

Your progress will be monitored in a variety of ways:

Supervision
Students meet with their supervisors at least every month to support and guide students through their Professional Doctorates.

Presentations and fora
From time to time students are expected to make presentations about their work to other students and staff. This aims to help support students with their work and to build on their work so far. There are also online fora for students to discuss issues relating to their research.

Thesis Monitoring Committee
A Doctoral student’s progress is monitored by an independent Thesis Monitoring Committee within the School. This Committee consists of at least two members of staff not concerned with a student’s supervision and it meets twice per year for full time students, and one per year for part-time students.
After 12 months of study, Doctoral students are expected to present their work to their Thesis Monitoring Committee who will determine the level the student is working at – either Masters of Doctoral level. This process is called Transfer of Ordinance and it confirms whether a student will continue to the next stage of their Professional Doctorates or whether they should transfer to the MPhil programme. Part-time students will normally present before the end of their second year of study.

Viva
At the end of study, students undertake an examining process called Viva Voce to present their thesis to an Examination Board who will determine whether a student’s work is of a high enough standard to be awarded a Professional Doctorate.

What academic skills support will I receive?

We provide Research Methods and Generic Skills Training and students are assigned two supervisors (relevant to the area of a students’ doctorate) who meet with them regularly. Supervision can take place by telephone, email and video conferencing. Guidance can also be drawn from other relevant members of staff with specific expertise.

How will I be guided through the Professional Doctorate?

The University Code of Practice for Supervised Postgraduate Research provides clear guidance on your responsibilities as a student and how you will be supported. Students also receive a School Student Handbook which provides further detail.

The Professional Doctorate in Health is designed for a range of health and social care professionals who are interested in furthering their development as expert practitioners and researchers in practice.

By utilising web-based delivery blended with Summer Schools (typically five days in length), the programme aims to meet the learning needs of busy health and social care practitioners.

During the first two years of study you will complete a series of units covering research methods, evidence based practice, comparative health policy and other topics relevant to research in practice. Throughout the first two years you will also be developing a protocol for your doctoral research project. Unlike the PhD programme, we do not expect you to have a well-developed research protocol before commencing your studies. Your Personal Development Adviser (PDA) will work with you to develop your research plans, before handing over to an academic and practice-based supervisor during the second year.

- Carry out independent research and understand research methods whilst remaining in your practice area.
- Choose your learning style within a flexible environment amongst a multi-professional community.

Time required for study:
We recognise that many of our students are in demanding full-time health or social care jobs and the Professional Doctorate in Health programme is designed to be flexible and supportive in order to accommodate these demands. Transfer to the PhD programme:

Learning and teaching

Teaching takes the form of online units, which include resource libraries, access to all of the online journals (held by the University of Bath Library), and a structured series of activities and online discussion boards.

All resources can be accessed through ‘PD Online’ - our bespoke virtual learning environment. You will also be able to submit your assignments on PD Online and communicate directly with staff and your fellow students.

A Summer School is held once a year at the University (most often in September). You will attend one Summer School/Induction during your first year and one Summer School at the beginning of the second year.

Your tutor will provide support for your assignment preparation, as well as learning needs analysis and personal development planning.

The ‘research and thesis’ phase will be supervised by a panel of specialists; comprising a University academic member of staff (to ensure that the work is of a sufficient standard), and a practice-based specialist (to ensure that the work is at the forefront of practice).

Methods of assessment

Assessment consists of a combination of written assignments, literature reviews, research protocols and reflective accounts. There are no written examinations.

How you will be taught

Module 1a comprises Research Methods Training (taught; seminars and workshops). If you already have a Masters degree, with an assessed element of research methods, you may not need to undertake Research Methods Training.

Delivery of Module 1b and Modules 2-5 takes the form of direct supervision by at least two members of University staff. Much of this supervision can be done by email, telephone and video conferencing where necessary or on campus. There are also online fora for students to discuss issues relating to their research.

What you will study

There are 5 Modules, spread over 3 Levels. The modular structure is explicitly intended to be highly flexible and modules are individually tailored to the interests and expertise of the entrant and the needs of their employer or sponsor.

Module 1 - Research Methods Training (module 1a) and a Critical Analysis and Review of Research Literature (module 1b) (can exit with a Postgraduate Diploma in Advanced Professional Practice)

Module 2 – Development of an Individualised Learning Plan for future modules. Research project with a written product of 15,000 words (can exit here with a Master’s degree in Advanced Professional Practice)

Modules 3-5 - Research project(s) with a written product of 15,000 words each. These projects may be related or quite independent of each other. It is possible to combine modules.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is possible for up to 50% of the degree, when the material for recognition has not been submitted for any other award and when it is of a high enough standard. Peer reviewed journal publications or research reports are good examples of suitable products for recognition.

How you will be assessed

The total written output required is the same as Ph.D. candidates would put into one single thesis. However, for the Professional Doctorate this can be split into five modular products each of 15,000 words. You can combine these into larger and deeper studies if you wish, subject to the agreement of your personal supervisors. If you have RPL, this would be incorporated in the final written output. The thesis is assessed by oral examination (viva voce) at the end of the programme.

Module 1 is designed to help sharpen up your technical writing skills. The standards and criteria are rigorous, as you would expect at doctoral level, but you are given support to ensure you achieve those standards. These written assignments are intended to be easily reducible to a paper which can be submitted for publication, and candidates are strongly encouraged and supported to do this.

The Professional Doctorate in Educational Psychology enables students to develop highly specialised knowledge, understanding and skills at the frontiers of their professional area. In the current business climate, it is increasingly important for business managers and leaders to update and advance their business knowledge and skills. The Doctor of Business Administration offers the opportunity for those with an enthusiasm for learning to gain a professional doctorate, the highest level of professional qualification available in business and management. Drawing on the work of international experts in our Business School you will learn about the latest management techniques and research methods. Whatever your subsequent career, the skills and knowledge you gain will be an asset to you and help you to improve the effectiveness of your organisation and those who work in it.

The DBA is undertaken on a part-time basis and typically takes five years to complete. It is organised around four 2-day learning workshops a year, facilitated by internationally renowned practitioners and researchers who offer contrasting perspectives on management philosophy, organisation development and methodology in management research. These structured workshops both underpin the individual programme of research that participants undertake as a key part of their studies whilst also allowing for continuous peer review and engagement.

The study route is part-time. Attendance at four weekend (Friday and Saturday) workshops per year. There is no taught element to the DBA. The programme of study is organised around four 2-day (Friday and Saturday) facilitated learning workshops a year.

Teaching methods

We offer a varied programme of learning that includes facilitated seminars, practical workshops, web-based learning, case study analysis and traditional lectures. We also provide sessions by visiting staff, practitioners and consultants to give a varied perspective of the topics covered.

You will be supported throughout your studies by a supervisory team who will advise you from the time you register until you complete your Doctorate.

You will undergo two progression assessments on the programme to monitor and advise on the development of your research and a final assessment for the Doctorate.

The final submission must contain a written document that presents and defends a thesis. A thesis is an intellectual position capable of being maintained by argument.

A submission may also contain other works on which the thesis and its defence are based.

The Faculty of Science offers a suite of Professional Doctorates. You will be supervised by experienced researcher-practitioners with extensive applied experience.

On this course you will:

The programme enhances personal development planning for continuing professional development. It encourages an advanced level of critical, analytical, debating and publishing skills, plus knowledge of the range of different research methods encountered in professional practice. Further to this, you will have the opportunity to research, with appropriate supervision, a professional issue/topic to generate findings and/or implications for the improvement of you own, or others delivery of that profession. As such, the benefits of the qualification extend to the broader organisation and profession.

Across many organisations (e.g. professional bodies for sport, exercise and health; NHS), a Professional Doctorate is now viewed as a necessary academic qualification for attaining higher level posts.

Module Details

This is a part-time course, which has been specifically designed so that it can be available to sport, exercise and health professionals from all over the country, to fit with the demands of full-time employment. The course structure is only offered in a part-time mode and is divided into two parts:

Part 1

This is the taught component of the programme, which will equip you with the skills you will need in preparation for Part 2. Part 1 consists of four units:

Professional Review and Development
Advanced Research Techniques
Publication and Dissemination
Proposal for Professional Research and Development
Attendance for Part 1 will be in six study blocks of three days duration spread over two academic years. Typically, you will be required to attend the University for up to 18 days for the whole of Part 1.

Part 2

This is the research and professional development component. It comprises one or two pieces of practice-based research, linked with a commentary demonstrating the relevance of the research to both practice and the practitioner. The nature of this study may include pure basic research or applied research related, for example, to a management or educational setting. This should normally take between 24 and 48 months to complete. Attendance for Part 2 will only be required for tutorials, seminars and oral presentations.

Assessment will be by a thesis, an oral presentation and a viva voce examination.

The University offers Accreditation for Prior Learning (APL), for applicants with previous learning experience and other academic achievement, which could be taken into account for some of the units of study. Claims will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Programme Assessment

You will be assigned one or more university supervisors, depending on the area of research and professional development. Access to specialist advisors in the workplace will be required for Part 2 of the programme and will vary according to the area of investigation. We have excellent support systems for our Professional Doctorate students and you will be assigned a Personal Tutor for Part 1 as well as two Supervisors for Part 2 of the course.

There are further opportunities to attend Research Seminars and Workshops organised by the University's Graduate School.

The Professional Doctorate consists of coursework and research and is credit based. The coursework component will build on professional expertise by exposing you to challenging and innovative ideas in your field.

Assessment is by coursework including preparation of an article for publication, a research proposal, and oral presentations. This should normally take 24 months to complete.

The programme is predominantly work-based and the activities will benefit your workplace/profession. The decision to support an individual on this programme recognises their importance to the organisation and the projects undertaken should allow your organisation to develop new processes and procedures that will be of benefit to the workplace.
