The MCP/PhD provides psychology graduates with doctorate level clinical and research training in clinical psychology that is consistent with international standards of professional psychology.
The MCP/PhD program adopts a scientific and evidence-based approach to clinical psychology. The treatment model is based on a cognitive-behavioural approach, and the introduction of alternative models of therapy in the second year ensures both a depth and breadth to your clinical training.

The MCP/PhD involves four and a half years of full time study and includes three components; academic coursework, supervised clinical placements and research.

Learning and teaching

Each unit is led by a specialist tutor and comprises:

- Tutored time - 40 hours involving you in lectures, group work and individual or paired tasks.
- Independent study - 80 hours in which you will research issues raised in tutored time and plan, research and write the Unit Assignment.

Studying by means of directed learning is currently possible for some units. In the Research Enquiry phase, a supervisor and co-supervisor will be responsible for giving you advice and support, and monitoring your progress.

Intensive teaching weeks

On-campus units are offered at specific times of the year according to a programme published in advance.

The Summer School normally runs for three weeks from the beginning of July, one or two units are also usually offered in January (applications for both must be made via Summer School process).

One core and one optional unit are typically offered via distance learning in either the spring or autumn term.

Methods of assessment

Units will normally be assessed through one assignment of 8,000 words.

Your Research Enquiry will be assessed through a viva voce examination at the University by a member of staff (not your supervisor) and by an external examiner especially appointed to your thesis. The Research Enquiry must provide evidence of originality of mind and critical judgement about your chosen aspect of education, and must contain material which is worthy of publication.

Academic requirements

- First or 2:1 Honours degree (or equivalent) in an appropriate subject, from a recognised university.
- Advanced qualification (MEd, MA or MPhil) in education or a related field. Alternatively, the completion of two Masters level education-focused units at the University of Bath will be considered.

- Appropriate professional experience in the practice of education or a related field.

English Language requirements
(Certificates must be dated to within two years of the start of the programme of study.)

- IELTS 7.0 (with not less than 6.5 in each of the four components)

What you will study

The delivery is described as ‘taught’ but at DBA level the delivery is much more about a process of engagement between the academic staff and the students. The programme is delivered over five taught workshops, attendance at which is compulsory.

On this course you will study five modules. These are:

- Module One: Developing the Doctoral Research Project (40 credits)
This module is designed to introduce you to doctoral-level research, having already submitted a detailed research proposal as part of the admissions procedure. This will be used as the basis of individual counselling and group work to refine the question and explore the theoretical and practical context of your proposed projects. In the assessment for this module, you will produce a comprehensive contextualisation of your research question. This will include a definition of the question, an introduction to the organisational context, and an introduction to the academic context, together with some consideration of a broad research approach.

- Module Two: The Theoretical and Practical Context for Doctoral Research (140 credits)
In this module, you will be introduced to the importance of setting an appropriate practical and theoretical framework in which to ground your research. In your assessment, you will be expected to set out the detailed practical context of your research, as well as produce a critical literature review. This will set out the background theories from which the academic context is drawn, together with the conceptual frames that will inform the thesis.

- Module Three: The Methodological Framework and Methods for Data Collection (40 credits)
Develop your understanding of the philosophy of research started in module one, and address these issues in more detail. In addition, you will be introduced to a variety of methods for data collection. You will be introduced to data analysis that will be addressed in more detail in module four. For the assessment, you will produce a paper of 10,000 words that clearly sets out and defends your chosen methodological position, as well as similarly setting out and defending your proposed methods for data collection. On successful completion of this module, and before the next module workshop, you will begin engagement with your main data collection.

- Module Four: Analysing, Interpreting and Reflecting on Findings (140 credits)
This workshop will focus on the analysis and presentation of findings in a critical and reflective manner. It is expected that you will have collected some of your data before this workshop, which at a minimum should take the form of a pilot study or may be more substantive data gathering. You will produce an assessment of 15,000-20,000 words that presents a clear analysis of your findings from the data. The exact structure will depend on factors such as the background methodology and the exact data collection and analysis techniques used.

- Module Five: The Nature of the Contribution to Knowledge and Professional Practice (180 credits)
The final module focuses on your contribution to professional and theoretical knowledge. In simple terms, this module is equivalent to the discussion and conclusion chapters of a traditional PhD.

Guidance will be given on what constitutes a contribution to knowledge, in terms of theory, method and practice. In addition, you will attend workshops on structuring your proposed contribution into a thesis. The notion of conceptual framing will be critically revisited to provide a theoretical context for the findings and to ensure you think about where your own work fits into the ongoing research agenda, rather than simply reflecting on what has gone before.

The assessment for module five is crucial to the success of the overall thesis. It forms the core of the DBA, clearly discussing the contribution to knowledge that your findings make to the academic and practical context in which the DBA has been situated.

Learning and teaching methods

The DBA will be delivered at our Treforest Campus over three day blocks, approximately every six months. The workshops will typically span a Thursday, Friday, Saturday to minimise disruption for students. These are supplemented by additional update days where students are recalled for meetings with supervisors and additional input where necessary. The taught workshops are spaced over approximately 30 months, with production of the final assessment document in the months following the final workshop.

Work Experience and Employment Prospects

Career enhancement to strategic levels in organisations is often sought by successful DBA candidates. DBA graduates have the ability to create and interpret new knowledge through original research. They produce first-class original research of publishable quality that sets them apart from other managers. This encompasses robust design, implementation, execution, and dissemination. This research also makes significant contributions to practice on many levels, within organisations, on an industry level, and on a policy level. Many of our graduates have progressed to senior positions in public sector, private sector, and academia.

Assessment methods

Each module results in the production of an assessed piece of work, the length of which varies depending on the module. For example, the assessment for module one will be in the region of 8,000 words, whereas that for module two may be as much as 20,000 words to reflect the depth of enquiry demanded by that module. In total, you will typically produce some 80,000 words throughout the programme. This is comparable with other methods of doctoral study. Your final examination will involve the submission of an 80,000 word thesis (combination of assignments) and a viva voce.

The normal admission requirement is a Bachelor of Arts with Honours (BA(Hons)) degree in one of at least 24 subjects, but admission on the basis of alternative qualifications and experience is possible. Structure of the Programme

-The degree may be awarded in any of the subjects listed above. With the approval of the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Humanities) the degree may be awarded in a subject not listed above.
-The programme of study shall consist of the preparation and submission of a thesis embodying the results of supervised research. A candidate who has obtained a three-year bachelor’s degree will be required to take and pass the fourth-stage papers listed in the Honours requirements for the subject concerned, in addition to completing a thesis. A candidate whose qualification for entry to the programme is the degree of Bachelor of Arts with Honours, or the Postgraduate Diploma in Arts Subjects in the subject of the degree, will be required to complete a thesis, although in some cases the candidate may also be required to take and pass approved papers, normally at 400-level, in addition to completing a thesis.

Final project

Three months before the end of theoretical classes, the students will have to choose between one of the following careers: screenwriting or production. The students, who choose the screenwriting career, will have to write and deliver a final project from which the writing abilities developed during the program should emerge. Typically,the final project takes the form of a script for a feature film, which can either be an original idea or an adaptation.

The final project can be written in English, Italian, French or Spanish. The students, who choose the production career, will have the opportunity to undertake an internship within an established production or distribution company, a TV network, an advertising agency or on a film set.

The MISP aims at providing its stu- dents with the adequate knowledge, wide-ranging skills and contacts to meet the requests of an increasingly global and varied audiovisual industry.

Viticulture & Oenology: the science of grapegrowing and winemaking

This masters degree course consists of a curriculum specialising in cool-climate wine production, climate change effects on viticulture, terroir and sparkling wine. It also includes opportunities to visit other wine-producing areas in Europe. The Wine Department staff have considerable international expertise and research experience, and a brand new Wine Research Centre was completed in March 2014. This combination of experienced staff and modern research facilities will enable students to access an outstanding Masters-level education.

Course structure:

The programme aims to enable students to develop a deep and systematic understanding of wine science (oenology) and related disciplines, and then apply this knowledge to make viticultural and oenological decisions in complex circumstances.

Areas of study:

Students will be required to attend a two-week intensive course in vinegrowing and winemaking at the start of the programme.

The first semester comprises of three modules which enable students to gain and apply knowledge and understanding of current research in grapevine physiology, wine chemistry, biochemistry, and microbiology.

The second semester focuses on climate & terroir and sparkling wine. Students wishing to complete with the Post-Graduate Diploma in Viticulture & Oenology may elect to complete a dissertation and end their studies at this point. Students who intend to study for the full Masters degree will normally take an in-depth research methods module prior to commencing their Masters project.

The third semester is designed to allow students to complete their Masters project, which can be undertaken in the newly opened UK Wine Research Centre, or in another suitable location.

This programme enables students to gain advanced skills and knowledge in vinegrowing and winemaking. It therefore prepares them for careers which require the application of a high level of technical knowledge and the exercise of a considerable degree of responsibility. These positions include Vineyard Manager, Viticultural

Consultant, Winemaker and Wine Quality Controller for the wine trade, and will also give the opportunity to continue post-graduate education. Students can also progress towards the achievement of a Doctor in Philosophy (PhD) qualification in related subjects. There is a high demand for these skills, not just in the UK, but also in emerging wine-producing countries who are seeking staff with a truly international approach to the subject and a strong understanding of the requirements of international markets like the UK.

This exciting programme of study for students wishing to develop the craft and philosophy of costume design for live performance, screen or site-specific installation is unique in its approach.

Our students develop their concepts and creativity by interpreting a text or exploring a theme, thinking about character, movement and the performance environment. Instruction in the skills of pattern cutting, textile manipulation, millinery, puppetry, set design, computer aided design, welding, knitting, illustration and life drawing help students expand their skills base.

Students work on developing a comprehensive understanding of fabric, costume design and cutting, while exploring the historical and dramatic perspectives of the discipline and the process of performance.

This creative freedom and the combination of the practical developing alongside the conceptual, provides our students with a wide range of skills and a flexibility valued and highly respected by the industry.

Postgraduate students are ideally placed to study the interaction between costume and the other arts such as fashion, textiles, jewellery, film and TV, animation, illustration, installation, music and dance, and to take part in collaborations inside and outside of the University.

Thanks to our extensive national and international links with theatre, dance, film, television and opera companies, plus our network of freelance designers, you’ll be supported in sourcing work experience and other hands-on opportunities that will give you real-world skills and experience.

Programme structure

This programme is assessed by the production of a body of practical and written work on an agreed, self-initiated topic which can take advantage of the many local and international performance-based opportunities.

This programme is project-led. Your project could be led by narrative, theme, performance medium. It should offer scope for sustained research and design development for costume design. Study will combine practical studio work with theoretical and written studies, including professional practice elements to prepare you for employment in the industry, and a lecture/seminar series which will examine the wider context of your studies.

Career opportunities

Postgraduate studies in performance costume open up access to a wide range of work for the stage and screen. You will benefit from the superb reputation of this programme and may find employment within the spheres of drama, opera, film and television.

Our graduates have an outstanding record of success within the industry, most recently including a costume designer for British television series Downton Abbey, and costume workers on TV series Game of Thrones, Outlander, Poldark, Endeavour and The Halcyon, and on films Star Wars and Doctor Strange.

About the course

In the current business climate, it is increasingly important for business managers and leaders to update and advance their business knowledge and skills. The Doctor of Business Administration offers the opportunity for those with an enthusiasm for learning to gain a professional doctorate, the highest level of professional qualification available in business and management. Drawing on the work of international experts in our Business School you will learn about the latest management techniques and research methods. Whatever your subsequent career, the skills and knowledge you gain will be an asset to you and help you to improve the effectiveness of your organisation and those who work in it.

The DBA is undertaken on a part-time basis and typically takes five years to complete. It is organised around four 2-day learning workshops a year, facilitated by internationally renowned practitioners and researchers who offer contrasting perspectives on management philosophy, organisation development and methodology in management research. These structured workshops both underpin the individual programme of research that participants undertake as a key part of their studies whilst also allowing for continuous peer review and engagement.

The study route is part-time. Attendance at four weekend (Friday and Saturday) workshops per year. There is no taught element to the DBA. The programme of study is organised around four 2-day (Friday and Saturday) facilitated learning workshops a year.

The DBA offers the opportunity to progress beyond Master's level to gain the highest level of professional qualification available in business and management. Participants will not only increase their effectiveness as managers, but bring added benefits to their organisations from their learning and research outputs.

Teaching methods

We offer a varied programme of learning that includes facilitated seminars, practical workshops, web-based learning, case study analysis and traditional lectures. We also provide sessions by visiting staff, practitioners and consultants to give a varied perspective of the topics covered.

You will be supported throughout your studies by a supervisory team who will advise you from the time you register until you complete your Doctorate.

You will undergo two progression assessments on the programme to monitor and advise on the development of your research and a final assessment for the Doctorate.

The final submission must contain a written document that presents and defends a thesis. A thesis is an intellectual position capable of being maintained by argument.

A submission may also contain other works on which the thesis and its defence are based.

Clinical psychology can be studied as either a standalone coursework program, the Master of Clinical Psychology (MCP) or as a postgraduate double degree incorporating coursework and research, the Master of Clinical Psychology and Doctor of Philosophy (MCP and PhD). The MCP and PhD provides psychology graduates with clinical and doctorate-level research training in clinical psychology that is consistent with international standards of professional psychology.

The programs adopt a scientific and evidence-based approach to clinical psychology. The treatment model is based on a cognitive-behavioural approach, and the introduction of alternative models of therapy in the second year ensures both a depth and breadth to your clinical training.

The MCP and PhD involves four and a half years of full-time study and includes three components: academic coursework, supervised clinical placements and research.

Qualified clinical psychologists provide you with supervised clinical practice in an internal on-campus psychology clinic, as well as a variety of external teaching hospitals and clinics. The programs include a minimum of 1200 hours of clinical placement experience. The research component in the MCP and PhD requires you to produce a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) research thesis.

Our faculty have expertise in several areas, including film and media history; film and media theory; film and media analysis; and film, media, and cultural practices. The course-​based​, one-year MA program offers students the option of a professional internship or a major research paper.

Launched in September 2013, the Doctor of Philosophy program in Cinema Studies addresses the changing role of moving imag​e media within global culture. Past and present configurations of cinema are studied through a constellation of theoretical, textual, social, and historical rubrics. The core curricular offerings engage with debates and questions that persist within the scholarship while also examining how the field contends with emerging disciplinary issues and intermedial formats today and at earlier historical junctures.
