This course gives students the opportunity to develop a portfolio of production related skills by studying at DMU in Leicester and at Creative Media Skills (CMS), an independent training provider based at Pinewood Studios in Iver Heath, Buckinghamshire

CMS is DMU’s partner in developing and delivering the programme. It works hand in hand with government organisations, as well as the industry, to identify skills gaps and provide high-level targeted training in many areas of the film industry. CMS bring professionals and department heads into the classroom, and provides students with access to the UK film industry’s most valuable knowledge base – its staff.

Develop a range of production management skills

At DMU, these skills include scriptwriting, lighting and cinematography, image processing, directing and post production. At CMS you will focus on pitching, budgeting, production development, and fine skills. You will also gain core business expertise, such as an understanding of research and development, and wider careers planning.

Learning off campus at CMS

The second semester of your learning will take place in the Creative Media Skills centre. While there, you will manage the development of a production and receive masterclasses on a range of fine skills from the CMS team and respected professionals actively working in the film industry.

Semesters

During the first semester, you will work at DMU. This semester involves developing core skills in storytelling, screenwriting, directing, producing, image processing, sound recording and other camera based skills. You will take four, 15 credit modules during semester one: 

  • Screenwriting
  • The Production Process
  • Key Roles in the Film Industry
  • Realisation

You will be taught by DMU’s team of production experts and filmmakers in our studio space, and you will begin the process of developing a major project, and specialising in a production role. 

During the second semester, you will work in the Creative Media Skills centre. Here you will finesse your skills in a more diverse range of areas, including Production management & Coordination, Pitching, Assistant Directing, Production Management, Script Supervision, Hair, Makeup, Costume, Art Department; Working with Actors and Working in Teams. You will also enter pre-production under the guidance of our expert staff. At Creative Media Skills, you will take two, 30 credit modules, which cover these various areas: 

  • Pre-Production and Development
  • Fine skills

During this semester you will be expected to pitch film ideas to a panel of industry experts. The best will be selected as the major projects, which will become your focus in the third semester. During the third semester you will work more independently at DMU to manage and deliver your final film project, with an accompanying reflective commentary. This project will demonstrate the skills and knowledge developed on the course, and will form the basis of your professional portfolio. You also have the option of taking an academic dissertation. 

In addition to the major project, assessments take the form of practical coursework, written reports and presentations.

Teaching and Assessment

Each module of the course is taught via lectures, tutorials, practical sessions and seminars. Teaching takes place in semesters of 15 weeks – the normal pattern will be 12 weeks of lectures and three weeks of revision examinations.

Taught modules are assessed either by coursework or by examination, or both. Assessment of the individual project will consider the management of the project, the written report and the formal presentation.

Contact and learning hours

You will normally attend two - four hours of timetabled taught sessions for each module per week during term time. You can also expect to typically undertake a further 10 hours of independent study and assignments for each module per week.

Academic Expertise

The course teams within the Cyber Security Centre have unrivalled expertise in cyber security. The team includes former Chief Information Security Officers (CISOs) of large telecommunications companies, internet banks and cloud service providers, an ex vice president of one of the largest cyber security companies in the world, information assurance specialists with extensive experience working in various UK defence organisations, leading digital forensics experts and respected government advisors. Several of the team are regular media commentators on forensics and security. Professional input throughout the course will come from Deloitte and their cyber security professionals.

Facilities

The Cyber Security Laboratories are among the best equipped facilities of this type in the UK. Developed in consultation with leaders in the industry, they are designed to meet the highest forensics and security standards.
The laboratories contain 65 high-spec, specially customised PCs configured with multiple operating systems, virtualisation and removable hard drives, as well as specialised servers, wired and wireless networking equipment and a wide variety of other hardware and software components.

Cyber Security Centre

The laboratories are also the base for our Cyber Security Centre (CSC), a multidisciplinary group of academics and industry experts who focus on a wide variety of cyber security and digital forensics issues. Their mission is to provide the full benefits to all of a safe, secure and resilient cyberspace.

Whether it is the theft of a laptop containing secret information, high profile hacking incidents, anti-terrorism operations or controversies surrounding lost data, it is impossible to ignore the importance and excitement surrounding digital forensics and security.

Developed and delivered in conjunction with 7Safe, this course provides you with knowledge of the very latest computer forensics and security principles, practices, tools and techniques, taught by a team of experienced and specialist staff in purpose-built computer forensics and security laboratories. If you are interested in a challenging career in one of the most rapidly expanding areas of computing then this is the course for you.

Most students embark on their MSc after successfully completing one or more 7Safe courses. On successful completion of the 7Safe hands-on training course, you are then eligible to apply to DMU for an academic top-up/assessment by distance learning. Taking the course in this way is normally a part-time pathway and you should expect to study for two-three years. However, you can register directly with DMU for the full degree and the university then manages your attendance and progression through the relevant 7Safe modules and academic assessments. Registering with DMU direct can therefore provide a full-time route through the course.

The full MSc course consists of eight modules (at 15 credits each) and an MSc Project/Dissertation (at 60 credits). Seven of the taught modules are delivered and assessed jointly by De Montfort University staff and 7Safe trainers with the eighth being a stand alone distance learning module that DMU is responsible for. The Project/Dissertation is delivered and assessed by DMU alone. Successful completion of the MSc gives students seven industry recognised professional certificates and the MSc.

We offer a great opportunity to boost your career prospects through an optional one year placement as part of your postgraduate studies. Placements begin after the taught component of the course has been completed - usually around June - and last for one year. When you return from your work placement you will begin your dissertation.

Teaching and Assessment

Modules are delivered through a mixture of lectures, tutorials and laboratories. The methodology ensures a good balance between theory and practice so that real engineering problems are better understood, using strong theoretical and analytical knowledge translated into practical skills.

Contact and learning hours

You will normally attend 4 hours of timetabled taught sessions each week for each module undertaken during term time, for full time study this would be 16 hours per week during term time. You are expected to undertake around 212 further hours of independent study per 30 credit modules. IET accreditation recognises the high standard of the course and confirms the relevance of its content. In order to achieve IET accreditation the course has had to reach a certain standard in areas such as the course structure, staffing, resourcing, quality assurance, student support and technical depth.

Leadership - personal development skills of mastery, reflection, time and stress management, vision, active listening, communication skills, leadership theory, strategy development, managing change and presentation skills.

Research - analytical thinking, literature searching, interviewing skills, critical appraisal of research papers, qualitative research and analysis skills, quantitative research and analysis skills, research ethics, research presentation skills, conducting a research project, writing for a dissertation and publication skills.

Teaching - developing your own PDP and portfolio, reflection, communication, learning theory, mentoring and educational assessment.

Service Improvement - communication and competency mapping, stakeholder and patient engagement, health policy, designing, evaluating and conducting a Quality Improvement project using QI tools.

Teaching and assessment

The course is taught by a mix of attendance at the university and distance learning.

Attendance is required at six study days in year 1, five in year 2 and three in year 3. Students are also expected to commit to 6 hours a week self-study plus their 2 hours work time allocated for CPD a week, during semester times (2 x 18 week semesters per year).

Industry links and professional accreditation

Doctors who complete the PG Diploma in Medical Leadership, Education and Research maybe exempted from part of PG Certificate in Medical Education to qualify as a trainer.

Topical case studies are used as a vehicle for the exploration of important themes and debates in the new public health discourse

Teaching and assessment

Our teaching approach is ideally designed for studying at home and in the workplace. Study materials are available online in the DMU virtual learning environment. We suggest you will need to spend about 10-15 hours per week week studying the course material and undertaking assessment.

There is some attendance required at the university for UK-based students:

- An induction day, as you start the course, to introduce you to the programme team, the study facilities available to you, the course requirements and patterns of study.Two study days per year, where you will have small group tutorials about the assignments, do some further study in groups, and maybe sit a study day assessment, depending on the module

If you choose the independent prescribing option in the diploma stage this is taught partly by face-to-face teaching at DMU over 11 study days and two assessment days.

Assessments include written reports, clinical interventions, CPD cycles, presentation of patient cases and care plans. If students study the Independent Prescribing module, assessments also include OSCEs, oral examination and a reflective journal.

Assessment

This is a modular course and each module is individually assessed. A variety of assessment strategies are used including essays, reports, assessed seminars and a research dissertation.

There is the expectation that you will take responsibility for your learning and will seek support from the academic team as necessary. The philosophy of the course reflects the belief that you will manage your own learning independently with support from the course tutors.

It is also possible to exit with a post graduate certificate or diploma.

Teaching and Assessment

You will be taught through a combination of lectures, tutorials, seminars, group work and self-directed study. Assessment is through a variety of methods including presentations, essays and case studies.

- Ethics in Sports Management and Governance concentrates on ethical issues in the modern sports industry and explores crises in the sector. Computational Intelligence encompasses the techniques and methods used to tackle problems not well solved by traditional approaches to computing. Individual Project (Stage three)

This research can be industrially-based or linked to an industrial partner, attached to one of the mechatronic-related research teams within the faculty or in other collaborating institutions. The research project should be in an area relevant to Mechatronics, where clear evidence of the ability to solve a real multidisciplinary problem is demonstrated. The project assessment involves a formal presentation, production of a technical paper and a thesis.

Optional placement
We offer a great opportunity to boost your career prospects through an optional one year placement as part of your postgraduate studies. We have a dedicated Placement Unit which will help you obtain this. Once on your placement you will be supported by your Visiting Tutor to ensure that you gain maximum benefit from the experience. Placements begin after the taught component of the course has been completed - usually around June - and last for one year. When you return from your work placement you will begin your dissertation.

Teaching and assessment

Teaching is delivered through a variety of methods including lectures, tutorials and laboratories. You will be expected to undertake self-directed study.

Contact and learning hours

For taught sessions you will attend eight modules with a total of 48 hours (four hours per week for 12 weeks each), with eight hours per module per week of average additional self-directed study. For the individual project you normally will spend 13 weeks working five days (eight hours per day) a week to complete it, and have one hour per week contact time with your supervisor.

Academic expertise

Research is carried out by the Mechatronics Research Centre, which holds a considerable number of UK and EU research project grants and has collaborative research links with more than 100 national and international organisations. The group is internationally regarded and specialises in machine design, control and simulation, fluid power systems and motion control.

As part of your studies, you will be offered opportunities to work on projects with research groups within the faculty that are engaged in high-class, leading-edge research and industrial collaboration and consultancy.

During the project element of the course, the Intelligent Machines and Automation Systems (IMAS) Research Laboratory provides access to dedicated research facilities

There are provisions for a traditional classroom-based delivery, either part-time or full-time, as well as distance learning. Teaching will include formal lectures, tutorials and labs. You will also be expected to undertake independent study and research to support your assignments and dissertation. Assessment will be 100 per cent coursework. It will involve various group and individual methods, including oral exams, projects, presentations, written essays and reports.

Academic expertise

he Software Technology Research Laboratory is one of the largest software engineering research groups in the UK and its research activities are acknowledged as being at the highest level of international excellence. In the last UK HEFCE Research Assessment Exercise (RAE 2008), 85 per cent of the research produced by the group was considered to be world-leading, internationally excellent or international.

The major themes within the lab include computer security and trust, software evolution, theory and computational paradigms and semantic web and service oriented computing. The staff working in these areas bring to the course their academic excellence and their experience of applying their work to various industrial sectors.

Taught by experienced research staff from the Centre for Computational Intelligence (CCI), an internationally recognised centre highly rated in the most recent Government Research Assessment Exercise, you gain a professional qualification that gives substantially enhanced career and research prospects in both traditional computing areas and in the expanding area of computational intelligence.

Computational Intelligence encompasses the techniques and methods used to tackle problems not well solved by traditional approaches to computing. The four areas of fuzzy logic, neural networks, evolutionary computing and knowledge based systems encompass much of what is considered to be computational (or artificial) intelligence. There are opportunities to use these techniques in many application areas such as robot control and games development depending on your interests.

Modules include work based on research by the Centre of Computational Intelligence. With an established international reputation, their work focuses on the use of fuzzy logic, artificial neural networks, evolutionary computing, mobile robotics and biomedical informatics, providing theoretically sound solutions to real-world decision making and prediction problems. Past students have published papers with their CCI project supervisors and gone on to PhD study.

Teaching and Assessment

The course consists of an induction unit, eight modules and an individual project. The summer period is devoted to work on the project for full-time students. If you choose to study via distance learning, you would normally take either one module per semester for four years or two modules per semester for four years plus a further year for the project.

Teaching is normally delivered through lectures, seminars, tutorials, workshops, discussions and e-learning packages. Assessment is via coursework only and will usually involve a combination of individual and group work, presentations, essays, reports and projects.

Distance learning material is delivered primarily through our virtual learning environment. Books, DVDs and other learning materials will be sent to you. We aim to replicate the on-site experience as fully as possible by using electronic discussion groups, encouraging contact with tutors through a variety of mediums.

Contact and learning hours

On-site students will have the lessons delivered by the module tutors in slots of three hours. In the full-time route, you can expect to have around 12 hours of timetabled taught sessions each week, with approximately 28 additional hours of independent study. There are also three non-teaching weeks when fulltime students can expect to spend around 40 hours on independent study each week.
