Theory and action-based learning

This programme is closely associated with the research carried out within the Institute of Management Research, where the focus is on research into relationship management, institutional dynamics, decision making and innovative management. You will become familiar with both the theoretical and practical aspects of your special subject. The programme combines a thorough training in methodology with action-based learning: you apply the theory you have learned to concrete cases and learn to develop appropriate solutions. And in our Visa Skills Lab, students use computers to make scenario analyses and simulate decision-making processes within organisations.

Truly international

We provide internationally oriented education and research training. Our students have the opportunity to take part in a Master’s level project on European Human Resource Management, a cooperative venture among six leading European business schools and universities. Here, students work in a multi-cultural team and follow a consultancy in-company project in one of the six countries involved.

The principle concern of the Masters programme is the study of communities and the dynamics and tensions of human interaction within them, alongside the role of law as a vehicle of governance. It aims to focus on understanding disadvantages within communities and how inclusivity can be established. As well as, understand social inequalities and how to enhance the value of diversity and inclusion.
This course offers three exit routes. It is driven by the changing nature of equality legislation and practice and the conceptual synergies, at Postgraduate Certificate level between the Community Leadership Studies and the study of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion. At the Diploma and Masters level there is a distinct focus on equality, diversity and inclusion.

This is an exciting and highly innovative course (developed in collaboration with the Media Diversity Institute) that seamlessly combines theory and modules providing or containing hands-on practical training in journalism or campaigning and public relations related to social and cultural diversity.

The course will give you the opportunity to study and research the main ways in which social scientists analyse the role of the mass media in the social construction, representation and understanding of difference and social diversity and get a critical understanding of the social and media structures and journalistic practices that impact upon these processes. It will also equip you with practical skills that will enable you to produce your own media product on a topic related to social and cultural diversity.

The course combines a portfolio of theory modules aimed to develop your knowledge and critical understanding of the processes of managing and making sense of cultural diversity, key issues in intercultural communication and of various aspects of the sociology of news with a number of practice-oriented modules intended to give you first hand experience in the practice of inclusive journalism.

Drawing upon this unique combination of rigorous theoretical engagement and specialist practical training, this course is designed to equip you with a comprehensive conceptual/theoretical grounding and the practical skills to engage in responsible media coverage of diversity, to practice culturally informed and inclusive journalism and to develop a career (whether practical, strategic, or research-based) involving understanding and responding to the challenges of social diversity.

Likewise, the educational special needs task is being radically re-conceptualised.

Meeting the diversity of learner needs within today’s classrooms and schools is one of the most challenging and important tasks facing education today. Drawing on research-based practice, the MEd in Inclusion and Special Needs Education addresses these challenges in a straightforward, supportive and practical way. The programme aims to develop forms of teaching that reach out to all learners within a class, as well as the establishment of school conditions that will encourage such developments.

Our staff are highly research active, bringing their cutting edge research into their teaching. The work of our research centres, the Centre for Progressive Leadership (CPL) and the Working Lives Research Institute (WLRI), along with our excellent libraries, including our specialist Trades Union Congress (TUC) Library, inform much of the work of your lecturers and tutors and thus support your course; you are welcome to participate in their activities too. Assessment is both formative and summative. It is designed to appeal to – and test – students from wide range of traditions. Methods are varied and include assignments written in report and essay format, comparative analyses, case studies, a skills development portfolio, presentations and group work. There are also two exams. The exams take place only in the first semester and are required by the CIPD across all approved programmes. Exam briefing is given is giving to help prepare you for these assessments.

There will also be a dissertation which carries 60 credits. The dissertation requires you to conduct a piece of empirical research on a topic of your choice (and approved by your tutor). Most students choose to conduct their research on a key ‘people management’ issue within their own organisation.

Modular structure

The MA Human Resource Management course consists of six taught modules and a dissertation. In the first semester only, there is also one Saturday team skills workshop, one afternoon/evening assessment preparation/taught session and a two-day (Friday and Saturday) block release to address business and HRM strategy and exam preparation.

Course Overview

There is recognition that the underlying body of knowledge and theories surrounding equality and diversity, which are directly linked to social policy, sociology and social and cultural theory, are essential in developing informed professionals. This Master's Programme will extend professional knowledge and understanding and aims to develop reflective/reflexive practitioners through an integrated set of compulsory modules. This programme will give a sound understanding of equality and diversity and its implications for society, organisations, communities, families, individuals and policy-makers.

The Master's in Equality and Diversity in Society is grounded in the quest to ‘provide an understanding of the long-term and underlying causes of disadvantage that need to be addressed by public policy’ (Equalities Review, 2007: 13). To this end, the principle of equality and inclusion is embedded within and throughout the programme. The programme recognises that philosophers, economists, and political and social theorists debate the concepts of equality and diversity from a range of different perspectives; allowing the student to explore competing interpretations of what ‘equality’ and ‘diversity’ might mean in our society. Through engaging with ‘the intellectual traditions and perspectives of the social science, students will be encouraged to explore social processes and the links between theory, policy and practice. It allows students to debate societal issues, and promote engagement with ‘new ideas …. relating to issues such as the impact of globalisation on … social justice, sustainable development, social inclusion..’

Part I comprises four taught modules which can be access through weekend taught sessions or through an online virtual learning environment or through a blended learning approach.

Part II is the dissertation component where the student will explore an aspect of equality and diversity through either an extended literature review or primary research (15,000 words).

The public policy drive has highlighted the need for professionals who are able to understand ‘the complexities involved in social policy formation, implementation and development’ (SPA, 2007: 8). This programme has been designed both as a natural progression for BA Social Inclusion graduates, and as preparation for students who wish to enter or are already professionals working in a diverse range of fields (for example: teaching, health and/or social care, educational settings, probation service, voluntary organisations, youth support, community education, police services). IME (Irish Medium Education) - Extra places are reserved to prepare those who are interested in teaching a subject through the medium of Irish in Irish medium schools. These students do a number of elements, including a Gaeltacht residentual in the August preceding the course, which is delivered by St Mary's University College, Belfast. They receive an additional certificate in IME and applications are welcomed from students wishing to do such courses in one of the subjects listed above.

The PGCE combines university-based tuition, consisting of taught sessions and directed independent study, with
professional placements in schools. The programme of study is organised around three interdependent strands:
• Professional School-based Experience - focuses on developing practical teaching competence particularly
through working closely with experienced teachers during periods of school placement.
• Subject Studies (eg English, Mathematics) - how to teach your subject.
• Educational Studies - common aspects of teaching and the professional role of the teacher, including pastoral

Students are assessed on these three strands of practical, professional and acedemic competences. Coursework comprises subject studies assignments, practical teaching and core tasks arising from lectures, workshops and tutorials addressing key educational issues.

Students are also offered optional, non-assessed workshops on a variety of topics including special educational needs, classroom management, pastoral care, diversity and inclusion, children’s rights and digital storytelling.

Course Structure

After enrolment and registration in early September, you will complete a two week block experience in a primary school. The next block of the course is devoted to university-based tuition (an induction week, taught sessions and directed independent study). This is followed by your first 10 week period of professional placement based in a school (which we arrange).This block practice straddles the Christmas vacation, so you will only be free to take the same holiday as that of the school in which you are placed. At the beginning of February, you return to university-based tuition in preparation for your second 10 week professional period in a school different from that of your first placement. This second placement straddles the Easter period and again the vacation is determined by the school in which you are placed.A final week of university-based tuition completes the course at the beginning of June.

Successful completion of the PGCE depends on achieving satisfactory standards in both practical teaching and in course work. The extended placements are in two different schools, normally one spent in a school catering for 11 – 16 age range and the other in an 11 – 18 age range. This ensures a varied experience of teaching in different schools and working with pupils from the whole ability range. In the two post-primary schools
you will work closely with members of each school’s staff. Your subject methods lecturer from Queen’s will also maintain close co-operative links with these teachers during your school placements.

The Equality and Community Leadership programme is a unique course developed and inspired by individuals who work within communities as activists and change makers. The principle concern of the programme is the study of communities and the dynamics and tensions of human interaction within them, alongside the role of law as a vehicle of governance. It aims to focus on understanding disadvantages within communities and how inclusivity can be established, as well as, understand social inequalities and how to enhance the value of diversity and inclusion. It is developed in the context of recent legislation which requires public bodies to ‘set and publish’ equality information objectives and both theory and practice at their centre. You will critically engage with concepts and methods to uncover inequalities and offer strategies for change towards valuing diversity and social inclusion in the context of society, communities and organisations.
You will enjoy a postgraduate research culture and varied developed links with professional bodies such the Institute of Leadership and Management and other public, voluntary, community and faith organisations.

Methods of Learning

Modules will be taught across three semesters per year through a combination of approaches such as lectures, seminars, group work, case studies, tutorials and independent enquiries. A key strength of our programme is our blended learning approach. This provides the opportunity to learn collaboratively both face to face and online.

Schedule

For this programme taught study would be a combination of lectures, seminars and online activities which is usually 3 hours per week, per module. We recommend students to spend 10 hours per week, per module in self-directed study time.

Students studying in India or Thailand will have block classes for 4-5 days with additional online support.

The programme has September and January in-takes for home students and September in-take only for international students.

Assessments
