The Master's specialisation in Gender Equality, Diversity and Inclusion in Politics introduces you not only to issues and ongoing debates in the field of gender and diversity studies in organisations and politics, but also offers the opportunity to familiarize yourself with the state of the art in the field and to acquire knowledge of different policy practices related to it and their gendered implications. It offers you the knowledge and skills needed to understand the moral reasons - social justice, fairness and anti-discrimination - and the business reasons - legitimacy and performance - for addressing gender equality, diversity and inclusion through, among others, gender mainstreaming strategies. You learn to apply academic theories to real life questions and dilemmas within organisations and society, to reflect upon the normative dimensions of debates, to design workable solutions to change organisations and to advice policy makers and management teams.
As a GEP student you will be offered an interdisciplinary education, leading to the only Master’s Degree (MSc) in Political Science with a specialisation in gender equality, diversity and inclusion in the Netherlands. The programme focuses on the role and function of gender and diversity in society, with a particular emphasis on underlying power processes in politics and society. You will study how organisations produce different structural inequalities (regarding gender, ethnicity, sexuality, class, age, disability), and how these inequalities intersect and manifest themselves in different practices. At the same time as the programme addresses questions related to the role culture, identity, leadership, and politics play in the (re-)production of gender inequalities, it also assesses the influence and strategies of different stakeholders as well as change agents in gender mainstreaming and transforming organisations. We offer state of the art theoretical insights and provide a solid training in research methods to help you design and implement organisational interventions and solve policy problems.

Linguistic Diversity in the Digital Age is an integrated international programme that offers you a comprehensive view of all subfields of the science of language. As a student in the programme you will be able to choose among four specialist options: (1) General Linguistics, (2) Phonetics, (3) Language Technology, and (4) Diversity Linguistics.
General Linguistics gives you comprehensive in-depth training in a wide range of theoretical and methodological approaches to language structure and language in use. Special emphasis is put on language typology in a global perspective as well as the documentation and description of endangered and previously undocumented and under-documented forms of speech.
Phonetics will introduce you to the tools for working with the articulatory, acoustic and perceptional aspects of human speech from a multidisciplinary perspective. At the more advanced level, you will become acquainted with the methods of experimental phonetics.
Language Technology combines linguistics with digital technology in an interdisciplinary approach with close links to computer science. The focus areas include natural language processing (NLP) for morphologically rich languages, cross-lingual NLP and language technology in the humanities.
Diversity Linguistics encompasses all aspects of linguistic diversity in time and space, including historical linguistics as well as the extralinguistic context of languages: ethnicities, cultures and environments. The areal foci in Diversity Linguistics are Eurasia and Africa.
These four specialist options interact at all levels. There is a study module common to all students in the programme regardless of the specialist option they choose. The integration of these four perspectives into one programme is unique - no similar programme exists anywhere else.
In the context of “Humanities”, the programme has the closest relationship to natural sciences, and many subfields of the programme involve methods directly linked to laboratory sciences, including digital technology and neurosciences.
The teaching in the programme includes lectures and seminars, practical exercise sessions, reading circles, fieldwork excursions, as well as work practice (internship). The broad spectrum of teaching methods guarantees optimal support for your learning processes.

Your Master's Thesis consists of an individual research project, which allows you to investigate a topic of your choice under the close supervision of one of our staff. Your thesis project will be closely aligned to the research within the Hotspot Gender and Power in Politics and Management. You will be invited to relevant research seminars with (inter)national guest speakers.

Our Language & Cultural Diversity MA examines the complex relationship between language and cultural diversity, and will equip you with an advanced knowledge of the major approaches to linguistic aspects of culture. Through the course you will develop the research skills and knowledge to support further study in empirical and applied linguistics.

We teach our modules through lectures, teacher-led class discussions and student-led group discussions. Typically 20 hours of class time per 20 credit module, with 180 hours of independent study. These sessions include lecturing, teacher-led class discussions and student-led group discussions around core readings in the field. The number of contact hours for each optional module varies. There will be six hours of academic writing workshops.
There will also be 7 hours of one-to-one dissertation supervision for the Dissertation modules, and typically 4.5 hours of dissertation workshops, to complement 588.5 hours of self-study. Typically, one credit equates to 10 hours of work.
The way we will assess you will depend on your choice of modules. For our required modules, this will be through a combination of essays and examination. We assess our other modules in various ways, but typically with essays and oral presentations. The dissertation is assessed by an extended piece of writing, 15,000 words long.
Our graduates use the skills which they develop with us to pursue careers in doctoral research, journalism, publishing, international relations and language-related professions such as teaching, translation and interpreting.

With much of your time being based in school on two longer placements, interspersed with time to reflect and receive further input, the Primary PGCE at Southampton will prepare you to make a significant contribution in primary education.
Our PGCE programme prepares you thoroughly to teach children across the primary age range, through a careful integration of University and school-based learning which draws on the expertise of our partner schools as well as University tutors. In the c36 week course you will spend approximately two-thirds of your time in school and the remainder in University, other settings and self-study. Most trainee teachers will focus on ages 5-11, with some School Direct alliances offering places to train to teach ages 3-7.

All trainees are encouraged to take advantage of the range of opportunities we provide to personalise their PGCE so that it reflects their professional experience, personal interests and developing areas of specialism. Current options include French, Science, Storytelling, PE, Green issues, Maths leadership, computer science, children's literature and drama.
We have a strong commitment to developing positive attitudes towards the health and well-being of children and teachers in schools. This runs as a thread across the course and all trainees participate in a project to explore and develop their practice in this area, for example investigating emotional health and well-being, healthy eating, or the use of the outdoors. In the modern global world, we are aware of the importance of developing international links; since 2012, trainees have been offered the opportunity to work in Kenya for two weeks of the course, with many of them describing this as ‘life-changing’.
For suitably-qualified applicants (i.e. a degree, good A level grade or equivalent or appropriate experience), we offer Primary Mathematics as a specialism, alongside training as a general Primary teacher. Focused university sessions, carefully selected school placements and a programme of additional experiences help you develop the specific skills needed to be a Mathematics specialist in school.
