You will achieve the recordable qualification through the Postgraduate diploma; however, there is the opportunity to undertake a dissertation through a part-time route to convert this post-graduate diploma to a Master’s Degree.

A new vision developed for District Nursing (DH 2013) Care in local communities: a new vision and model for district nursing will underpin the content and delivery of the pathway with a focus on 'Compassion in Practice' underpinning the new model focussing on:
- Population and case load management
- Support and care for patients who are unwell, recevoering at home and at end of life
- Support and care for independence

The aim of this programme is to support the development and enhancement of essential knowledge and skills in the registered practitioner to equip them for a career in specialist community nursing. Completing your Masters

The Postgraduate Diploma Specialist Community Public Health Nursing (Health Visiting & School Nursing pathways) and the Specialist Community Nursing (District Nursing pathway) awards – registerable with the NMC – each comprise of six taught modules to meet individual or service requirements in year 1 as a full time student.

Successful completion of the Postgraduate Diploma will lead to the NMC approved specialist and registerable qualification ‘Specialist Community Public Health Nursing (Health Visiting)’, ‘Specialist Community Public Health Nursing (School Nursing)’ or the Specialist Community Nursing (District Nursing), depending upon the route that the student registers for.

Students who have met the requirements for the award of a Postgraduate Diploma will be eligible to proceed into year 2, onto the Masters’ award – subject to the rules of progression. The award of an MSc Specialist Community Public Health Nursing (Health Visiting or School Nursing) requires successful completion of the Professional Practice dissertation (MSc route 1) or the Faculty dissertation module (MSc route 2), on a part-time basis.

The Specialist Community Nursing (District Nursing) programme will share modules with the P.G Dip/MSc Specialist Community Public Health Nursing Programme. This will enhance Inter-professional learning with other community specialist nurses working in primary care.

Wexham Glyndwr University is the only provider within North Wales which offers the MSc Health and Social Care (Community Specialist Practice) programme which covers the District Nursing qualification.

The course is designed for qualified nurses who hold a current registration as a nurse (part 1) with the UK Nursing and Midwifery Council Register (equivalent to parts 1 or 12 of the NMC Register). The programme enables the student to qualify as a District Nurse and record the qualification with the NMC.

An attractive feature of the programme is that the Post Graduate Diploma element of the courses can be taken full time for 1 year (self-funded) or part time over 2 years (possibility of Welsh Government funding if you work in Wales) or flexibly by a module by module approach (over 4 years).

We have successfully revalidated our District Nursing programmes in 2013, in line with current changes happening in the National Health Service and in response to our stakeholders needs. Stakeholders requested that staff need a particular set of skills, knowledge and competence to work effectively in primary care, in particular the need for more advanced prescribing that will ensure that patients with long term conditions can be managed at home. Nurses are often working alone and in a range of settings that are not set up as health care environments, making complex decisions about patient care and dealing with a variety of collaborative relationships and professionals.

The theoretical learning is largely at our Middlesbrough campus. If you are studying the MSc, then the teaching in Year 2 is largely self-directed with supervisor support and can be arranged to suit you and your supervisor.

These programmes require you to commit to a very comprehensive and individual approach to learning.

There are opportunities for some components of your learning to be accredited through recognised prior learning – this is agreed on an individual basis.

This course helps you gain confidence in accessing digital resources. You share some of your learning with other students on the postgraduate district nursing programme, some with students on other programmes and some further time with just your own programme.

Classroom teaching includes group discussions, presentations, project work and clinical skills development in practical labs. We highly value the experience and knowledge of service users and carers who are involved in the programme, for example through teaching activities and assessment. Community healthcare is undergoing rapid and immense change following structural changes and reorganisation within NHS Wales. District nursing means working collaboratively with patients, family, carers, other community nurses, health professionals and individuals from both statutory and voluntary organisations. Learning and teaching methods

Teaching and learning methods include lectures, tutorials, self-directed study, workshops and a clinical placement. As part of the course you will complete 40 academic days which run from September to May.

Year one requires attendance every Tuesday. In your second year lectures will be delivered on various days depending on which modules you choose. In addition you will undertake 40 clinical days per year. Ideally you should be working in a community setting, however if you are not, placements may be negotiated. While in practice, you will be assigned a mentor who will assess your clinical competence. All students are required to organise a tripartite meeting between student, mentor and academic supervisor during the first month in order to set objectives for clinical learning.

If you have undertaken the Fundamentals of Community Practice Module (30 credits) within the last five years, this can be transferred to the degree.

Work Experience and Employment Prospects

Undertaking this course ensures you will graduate with the knowledge, skills, competencies and capacity to provide safe and effective nursing care in community settings. Additionally, having employees with a specialist practitioner qualification is valued by nursing managers, commissioners and the Welsh Government.

Assessment

The course assessment strategy is closely aligned to the teaching and learning strategy which is designed to have: immediate professional relevance; draw on expertise-by-experience; foster active learning and be leaner-centred in approach. A distinct feature of the course is the range of assessment tasks, including those that allow students to undertake workplace relevant assessments that can have an immediate impact in practice. Examples include: written assignments ranging from reflective pieces to academic essays culminating in a service improvement project, assessed practice within your placements; and the development of a profile of the health needs of your practice area, alongside resources to address the identified health need.

You develop your expertise as an autonomous practitioner and leader with an evidence-based skills set that meets the challenges of contemporary practice. There are many opportunities within the course to share learning from your peers and other disciplines from across the primary care team.

If you complete the postgraduate diploma award you gain a Postgraduate Diploma Community Specialist Primary Care Nursing – District Nursing. You then have the option to complete a dissertation and graduate with an MSc Nursing (specialist practice district nursing). Please note additional funding is required for you to go on and complete a further 60 credit dissertation module for the award of MSc.

You complete a research-based module which potentially leads to the dissertation. This equips you to use policy and research to underpin and develop innovative practice and gives you the skills to frame a research question, take empirical research and write up an academic dissertation.

This District Nursing programme combines theoretical study and supervised practice within a primary care setting. It involves a great deal of critical analysis, synthesis, evaluation, discussion, dialogue and debate.

The course’s student-centred approach values prior learning and experience and builds on existing clinical and theoretical knowledge.
You will be encouraged to share your past experiences as you network within your peer group and beyond.

Many sessions are co-taught with other community nursing programmes enabling you to gain a better understanding and appreciation of the roles played by, and the challenges faced by, other healthcare specialists.
You can study full time (40 weeks) or part time (80 weeks). Modules are delivered one or two days a week and clinical placements intersperse the classroom learning blocks. Theory days can be used for activities such as complementary module-related sessions, masterclasses, personal study and assignment preparation.

You will be appointed a personal tutor to support and oversee your progress throughout the course and you will work with an experienced practitioner on work placements.

These routes offer practitioners the opportunity to build upon their experience and develop an understanding of the knowledge and evidence that positively contributes to the health and wellbeing of persons, groups and populations. You can opt to study the route which best meets your professional background and future aspirations.

Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) Registered Nurses already working in, or wishing to work in, the community can undertake a specified group of modules that allows them to achieve a community qualification or registration recognised by the NMC in District Nursing, Health Visiting or School Nursing.

There are three core modules that enable you to obtain a PgCert. You will then study modules appropriate to your desired route.

The routes in the Person-Centred Practice Framework seek to influence and enable the transformative processes of personal and professional development through engagement, facilitation and evaluation of person-centred teaching and learning approaches. It is designed to meet the professional needs of practitioners from all disciplines working in a variety of different health and social care settings.

The Framework is innovative and interactive, emphasising application of theory to your practice context. It will enable you to critically engage with, evaluate and synthesise the evidence and research to promote the development and enhancement of person centred culture and practice. This develops a pro-active, transformative and reflective
approach to meeting the public health and social needs of individuals, families, groups and populations.

You can personalise your learning to your own situation eg mental health, social care, infection control, acute care and community health. International students are particularly welcome as they offer a varied and different perspective to the context in which the learning occurs.

Teaching, learning and assessment

Our teaching, learning and assessment strategy is framed by our core philosophical concepts of personhood, person-centredness, human valuing, healthful relations, human potential and development, supportive and enabling environments. Central to this strategy is the need for learners to engage in the learning experiences, a readiness to listen and explore, preparedness to be open to experiences and a resolve to keep going. This environment will generate an ethos of engagement and criticality where students can explore and challenge theories, practices and different sources of knowledge creatively in an atmosphere of high challenge and high support. We will achieve this learning environment through

Assessment strategies will encourage application to practice. In line with the framework’s philosophy, a wide range of sustainable strategies are used to ensure assessment diversity. This will be achieved through the use of varied strategies which draw on the student’s own areas of practice such as portfolio development, practice proposals, annotated bibliographies, simulation events, games, seminar presentations and self-determined contextual assignment topics. Tutor, peer and self-assessment, including within virtual environments (eg [email protected], Values Exchange), will be an important component of approaches to formative and summative assessment.

For students undertaking NMC recognised specialist qualification and registration (District Nursing, Health Visiting, School Nursing), the course is 50% practice-based and requires placement in an approved practice with a Practice Teacher or Sign-off Mentor or Health Visitor Mentor. Placement will be negotiated with your supporting NHS area.

The BSc (Hons) Specialist Practice Programme includes awards in Community Nursing in the Home, District Nursing and Community Mental Health Nursing. This award supports progression to specialist practice level in the chosen route and is an NMC recordable qualification.

An experienced award leader organizes and monitors each award. The aim of the awards is to provide and support opportunities that enable students to develop in-depth specialist knowledge and skills about their particular chosen route, demonstrating they have appropriate attitudes to carry out the professional role required by a Specialist Practitioner.

The carefully selected range of modules mean that students will be exposed to a range of opportunities enabling them to become critical reflectors; able to analyse and evaluate theory and practice from an evidence base; identify need; instigate, lead and manage change in complex and demanding clinical and community settings. In addition students are expected to demonstrate an understanding of the impact of local and national policy within their clinical environment and in health and health care generally.

A variety of teaching and learning methods are incorporated into the modules and assessment strategies are planned to ensure that theoretical concepts are linked to practice.

Practice based learning is supported by a Practice Teacher or mentor identified by the sponsoring Trust who works in collaboration with the academic team and has a key role in facilitating practice opportunities, providing support, supervision and guidance in clinical practice to ensure the award outcomes for practice are met.

Course content

The award has a flexible structure, comprising 50 percent theory and 50 percent practice; both components are equally weighted for assessment purposes. There is a strong focus throughout the awards to ensure the integration of theory and practice.

There are four core modules - Professional Practice, Leadership, Health Promotion and Research. Students are also able to select from a defined range of route specific and option modules. The V100 Nurse Prescribing module is a compulsory component of the District Nursing award and can be taken as an option module for the other award.

Other admission details

The District Nursing and Community Public Health Nursing Specialist Practice programmes are somewhat different to traditional Degree/Post Graduate awards as they require you to be seconded by a sponsoring Trust and you will be/remain a Trust employee for the duration of these courses. The NMC require the programmes to be a blend of academic and practical learning. Trust involvement and support is essential in facilitating this and it is the Trust who allocate you a Community Practice Educator; these are the individuals who will co-ordinate and manage the clinical component of the programme. This practice based learning constitutes 50% of the programmes and both this, and the academic element, must be passed for you to complete the awards and be eligible to record your qualification with the NMC. The programmes are carefully planned so that your practical and academic pathways are clear to you at the start of your learning journey. Course outline

We provide a challenging and flexible learning environment for registered nurses to develop in community specialist practice. Our course is half theory, half practice, facilitated in an area specific to your subject. Graduate destinations

You will be interviewed for selection for this programme. The interview panel may include Trust staff, employers, mentors/practice teachers and university staff. During the interview you will be offered advice on the suitability of the award dependent on factors such as recent evidence of prior learning, and your personal and professional development needs.

You will need support from a NHS Health Trust or your employer and be able to secure a placement in your chosen area of practice, with access to a Practice Teacher. You will need to have completed a Disclosure Baring Service clearance, and this will be checked prior to your commencement on the course.

If you work in Cumbria, Lancashire or Blackpool areas, you may be eligible to apply for a place on the programme funded and supported by one of the local NHS Trusts. The NHS Trusts advertise places on the programme each year through NHS Jobs usually in spring/early summer. We advise you to contact your local NHS Health Trust and ask to speak with the manager for the specialist pathway that you are interested in, in order to express your interest and discuss opportunities.

Occasionally students self-fund a place on this programme. However, you will still need to talk to the relevant manager in your local NHS Health Trust in order to ask if they can provide you with a placement and a mentor/practice teacher in the relevant field of practice.

If you live further afield, you are able to undertake the programme with us if you can organise a practice placement with a mentor or practice teacher in the relevant field of practice. Your local NHS Health Trust will be able to advise you as to whether this is possible.
