Designed to prepare experienced nurses for 21st century district nursing, the programme combines theory and practice and will develop knowledge and skills to produce safe, autonomous and competent specialist practitioner district nurses. You will possess the expertise to initiate, lead and deliver contemporary district nursing practice.

About the programme

The programme comprises 50% theory and 50% practice and is underpinned by the philosophy and values of the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) and the requirements for a recordable qualification as a Specialist Practitioner District Nurse. The programme consists of six core modules, some of which are discipline specific and others which are shared. The shared learning provides a highly effective experience and contributes to the overall strength of the programme. All modules provide new knowledge, understanding and skills needed for contemporary district nursing practice.

The practice component will be undertaken within the District Nurse setting and students will be supervised and assessed by a Practice Teacher or experienced District Nurse.

On completion of this programme students will have developed a significant range of new knowledge, understanding and advanced skills needed for contemporary district nursing practice.

Students will also receive an academic award of Postgraduate Diploma and the professional recordable qualifications of ‘Specialist Practitioner District Nursing’, ‘Community Practitioner Prescriber’ and ‘Nurse Independent/ Supplementary Prescriber’.

Additional Entry Information

Applicants must identify a designated medical practitioner (DMP) who can provide a minimum of 78 hours of supervision and who meets the criteria for supervising students on the Prescribing in Advanced Practice module (NMC, 2006).

As the programme includes the Assessment in Advanced Practice module, applicants must have obtained agreement from an experienced practitioner or Advanced Nurse Practitioner to act as a clinical supervisor.

Competitive entry requirements necessitate the need for an interview. Interviews will be conducted in partnership with stakeholders.

The programme comprises of six SCQF Level 11 (20 point) modules. Students must complete all six modules:

The district nurse must respond to these challenges and the Queen's Nursing Institute/Queen's Nursing Institute Scotland (QNI/QNIS) Voluntary Standards for District Nurse Education and Practice (2015) provide a strong framework for district nurses in the current NHS as well as the skills and knowledge base needed to respond to the dynamic nature of community nursing.

There are two programmes at master’s level: the postgraduate diploma and the masters. (The postgraduate diploma is Year 1 of the full master's degree.) By successfully completing either of these programmes you achieve the new QNI/QNIS Voluntary Standards for District Nurse Education and Practice as well as the standards set by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) for the Specialist Practice in Nursing in the Home/District Nursing professional qualification which is recorded on the NMC register. If you continue to the MSc route after your first year, you undertake an eighth module which gives you 60 credits as a part-time student. This module involves you carrying out live research or a systematic review.

Teaching

In Year 1 of the MSc (the whole of the PgDip) teaching is split equally between the practice placement and theoretical study.

The practice placement is organised by your local trust which sponsors you for your place on the programme. This placement is usually in a different team to the one in which you have been working to give you a contrasting learning experience.

The theoretical learning is largely at our Middlesbrough campus. If you are studying the MSc, then the teaching in Year 2 is largely self-directed with supervisor support and can be arranged to suit you and your supervisor.

These programmes require you to commit to a very comprehensive and individual approach to learning.

There are opportunities for some components of your learning to be accredited through recognised prior learning – this is agreed on an individual basis.

This course helps you gain confidence in accessing digital resources. You share some of your learning with other students on the postgraduate district nursing programme, some with students on other programmes and some further time with just your own programme.

Classroom teaching includes group discussions, presentations, project work and clinical skills development in practical labs. We highly value the experience and knowledge of service users and carers who are involved in the programme, for example through teaching activities and assessment. Your practice teacher plays a significant role in ensuring that you have access to great learning opportunities during placement. Their skills and experiences also provide you with an excellent role model.

The final dissertation module within the MSc route gives you the opportunity to focus on an aspect of district nursing which interests you. You investigate this issue in depth either through live research or a systematic review.

You are assessed in a number of ways as we know that everyone learns differently.

These include exams, essays, reflections, reports, viva voce, simulations, research proposals, assessment of competencies in practice evidenced through a portfolio, and dissertation (if you are on the MSc programme).

Course structure

The course is delivered in a variety of ways, and is flexible enough to meet the needs of part-time students. Delivery is typically via e-learning, lectures, seminars, workbooks for work-based learning and simulation in our state-of-the-art Clinical Skills and Simulation Suite and Flexible Learning Environment.

You will be allocated practice placements by your employing trust, and assigned a dedicated tutor to support your learning in practice. You will also undertake a period of alternative practice during which you can spend a week in another practice environment, to diversify your skills and experience base.

A variety of learning and teaching strategies are used including problem-based and work-based learning. You need to be highly motivated and be prepared to actively engage with all aspects of your learning.

Public health roles are diverse, and flexibility in the course gives you the opportunity to gain the knowledge and skills to suit your personal and professional ambitions.

With the guidance of a tutor, you will set out a professional development plan (PDP) from the initial interview, which will be reviewed throughout the course. The PDP helps to integrate your personal areas of advancement with the existing requirements of the knowledge and skills framework. It also serves as evidence of your expanded skill set in order to boost your future employability.

The PDP also ensures that your needs are assessed on an ongoing basis and adjustments made accordingly, particularly useful if an extended part-time route is taken.

You will be supported throughout your course and placements by a practice teacher and mentors. An exciting variety of learning approaches are utilised in the course, which can be tailored to your preferred learning styles.

This module, shared with other students in the graduate programme, facilitates the development of knowledge and skills required to inform evidence-based practice, and prepares students for completion of a dissertation.

• Research Evidence in Practice
This is a practice-based module focusing on the evidence underpinning clinical practice and theory – practice relationships.

• Transforming Practice: the challenges of change
The aim of this module is to develop practitioners who will take a lead role in the management and development of effective strategies for health and social care interventions. This module is shared across the community nursing programmes with level 6 students.

• Nurse Prescribing from the Community Nurse Prescribers Formulary
This module is mandatory for those undertaking the Nursing in the Home / District Nursing pathway.

In the past 'advanced practitioner' posts have tended to be characterised principally by clinical competence; however, this programme accepts that advanced practice is a 'level' of practice rather than a particular role. Clinical Practice:

- is directly linked to the teaching, development and assessment of the nationally recognised benchmarks for advanced clinical practice (RCN 2010). This will be the preferred route for practitioners working in acute care, out of hours services, hospital at night services and in medical and surgical support posts.

District Nursing:

- is aimed at experienced nurses who wish to gain contemporary knowledge to take forward the rapidly changing primary care agenda. It will enable a critical, innovative and reflective approach to address the healthcare needs of individuals, families, carers, groups and communities. Students need to be sponsored or supported by an NHS Board in order to meet the requirements of the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) for practice assessment.

Health Visiting:

Leadership:

- is aimed at nurses and midwives who wish to build on their experience and transfer their learning in order to develop the higher level of knowledge and skills required of a school nurse. Format

This programme is driven by a philosophy that is student centered, progressive, process oriented and practice focused, and a blended approach to learning is adopted. Students will learn within a virtual environment (CampusMoodle) and apply the theoretical learning to their practice through a work based learning approach. Students will therefore have an opportunity to apply learning to their specific area of practice within contemporary healthcare service.

Depending on the route selected and the choice of optional modules, there will be some compulsory attendance at the University - for the clinical examination module and the prescribing element.

Placements and accreditation

Three of the routes are approved by the NMC to meet the requirements of being recorded as a district nurse (NMC 2001), or registered as a health visitor or school nurse on the NMC (2004) register. All five routes are accredited by the RCN.

Clinical Practice and Leadership routes are undertaken within your own place of work with the support of an identified practice facilitator. The criteria for this role are within the admission criteria. If you select to undertake the Non Medical Prescribing module you will require supervision by a designated medical practitioner.

Assessment

The course assessment strategy is closely aligned to the teaching and learning strategy which is designed to have: immediate professional relevance; draw on expertise-by-experience; foster active learning and be leaner-centred in approach. A distinct feature of the course is the range of assessment tasks, including those that allow students to undertake workplace relevant assessments that can have an immediate impact in practice. Learning and teaching methods

Teaching and learning methods include lectures, tutorials, self-directed study, workshops and a clinical placement. As part of the course you will complete 40 academic days which run from September to May.

Year one requires attendance every Tuesday. In your second year lectures will be delivered on various days depending on which modules you choose. In addition you will undertake 40 clinical days per year. Ideally you should be working in a community setting, however if you are not, placements may be negotiated. While in practice, you will be assigned a mentor who will assess your clinical competence. All students are required to organise a tripartite meeting between student, mentor and academic supervisor during the first month in order to set objectives for clinical learning.

If you have undertaken the Fundamentals of Community Practice Module (30 credits) within the last five years, this can be transferred to the degree.

Work Experience and Employment Prospects

Undertaking this course ensures you will graduate with the knowledge, skills, competencies and capacity to provide safe and effective nursing care in community settings. These routes offer practitioners the opportunity to build upon their experience and develop an understanding of the knowledge and evidence that positively contributes to the health and wellbeing of persons, groups and populations. You can opt to study the route which best meets your professional background and future aspirations.

Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) Registered Nurses already working in, or wishing to work in, the community can undertake a specified group of modules that allows them to achieve a community qualification or registration recognised by the NMC in District Nursing, Health Visiting or School Nursing.

There are three core modules that enable you to obtain a PgCert. You will then study modules appropriate to your desired route.

The routes in the Person-Centred Practice Framework seek to influence and enable the transformative processes of personal and professional development through engagement, facilitation and evaluation of person-centred teaching and learning approaches. It is designed to meet the professional needs of practitioners from all disciplines working in a variety of different health and social care settings.

The Framework is innovative and interactive, emphasising application of theory to your practice context. It will enable you to critically engage with, evaluate and synthesise the evidence and research to promote the development and enhancement of person centred culture and practice. This develops a pro-active, transformative and reflective
approach to meeting the public health and social needs of individuals, families, groups and populations.

You can personalise your learning to your own situation eg mental health, social care, infection control, acute care and community health. International students are particularly welcome as they offer a varied and different perspective to the context in which the learning occurs.

Teaching, learning and assessment

Our teaching, learning and assessment strategy is framed by our core philosophical concepts of personhood, person-centredness, human valuing, healthful relations, human potential and development, supportive and enabling environments. Central to this strategy is the need for learners to engage in the learning experiences, a readiness to listen and explore, preparedness to be open to experiences and a resolve to keep going. This environment will generate an ethos of engagement and criticality where students can explore and challenge theories, practices and different sources of knowledge creatively in an atmosphere of high challenge and high support. We will achieve this learning environment through

For students undertaking NMC recognised specialist qualification and registration (District Nursing, Health Visiting, School Nursing), the course is 50% practice-based and requires placement in an approved practice with a Practice Teacher or Sign-off Mentor or Health Visitor Mentor. Placement will be negotiated with your supporting NHS area.

Links with professional bodies

The routes allow you to gain the higher level knowledge and skills required for advanced practice. The carefully selected range of modules mean that students will be exposed to a range of opportunities enabling them to become critical reflectors; able to analyse and evaluate theory and practice from an evidence base; identify need; instigate, lead and manage change in complex and demanding clinical and community settings. In addition students are expected to demonstrate an understanding of the impact of local and national policy within their clinical environment and in health and health care generally.

A variety of teaching and learning methods are incorporated into the modules and assessment strategies are planned to ensure that theoretical concepts are linked to practice.

Practice based learning is supported by a Practice Teacher or mentor identified by the sponsoring Trust who works in collaboration with the academic team and has a key role in facilitating practice opportunities, providing support, supervision and guidance in clinical practice to ensure the award outcomes for practice are met.

Course content

The award has a flexible structure, comprising 50 percent theory and 50 percent practice; both components are equally weighted for assessment purposes. There is a strong focus throughout the awards to ensure the integration of theory and practice.

There are four core modules - Professional Practice, Leadership, Health Promotion and Research. Students are also able to select from a defined range of route specific and option modules. The V100 Nurse Prescribing module is a compulsory component of the District Nursing award and can be taken as an option module for the other award.

Other admission details

The District Nursing and Community Public Health Nursing Specialist Practice programmes are somewhat different to traditional Degree/Post Graduate awards as they require you to be seconded by a sponsoring Trust and you will be/remain a Trust employee for the duration of these courses. The NMC require the programmes to be a blend of academic and practical learning. Trust involvement and support is essential in facilitating this and it is the Trust who allocate you a Community Practice Educator; these are the individuals who will co-ordinate and manage the clinical component of the programme. This practice based learning constitutes 50% of the programmes and both this, and the academic element, must be passed for you to complete the awards and be eligible to record your qualification with the NMC. The programmes are carefully planned so that your practical and academic pathways are clear to you at the start of your learning journey. Unfortunately, without Trust sponsorship students cannot be enrolled onto these programmes. You should make contact with your Trust to investigate the possibility of funding/secondment.

Our University welcomes applications from mature applicants who demonstrate academic potential. We usually require some evidence of recent academic study, for example completion of an access course, however recent relevant work experience may also be considered. Please note that for some of our professional courses all applicants will need to meet the specified entry criteria and in these cases work experience cannot be considered in lieu.

On successful completion of our course you will be able to request changes to your registration details with the Nursing and Midwifery Council, allowing you to apply for district nursing roles.
