Students who choose to take an elective module(s) in Bradford or at one of our partner institutions will have a wider range of choices, including modules such as Mergers and Acquisitions, Management Consulting and Global Supply Chain Management. Up to three modules may be taken in this way at no extra cost.

The management project is an integral part of the Bradford MBA and is often the most challenging and rewarding part of the programme. At the end of the taught programme you put into practice what you have learnt by investigating and reporting on an important management issue or opportunity. If you are sponsored by your employer, the project can relate to your workplace.

Otherwise, you may choose to use the project to deepen your knowledge of a different sector or organisation, or as a stepping stone to your next job. The project findings and recommendations are then written up in a 9,000-word dissertation.

Throughout the project you will be guided by an experienced academic and you will have access to the School of Management Effective Learning department. The Effective Learning service often proves to be very useful providing students with a clear understanding and guidelines on what is required in order to successfully complete their project.

Learning activities and assessment

Students are expected to take two subjects (modules) every three months.

Each module contains nine study units. Students typically progress by studying one unit from each module per week. This equates to approximately 14-16 hours of study per week. If you don't think that you have enough time to study two modules over the three month period you can always chose to study just one module, lightening your workload considerably.

If work or family life is particularly busy then you can even suspend your studies and restart at a later date. This flexibility means that students can complete a distance learning MBA in 2 to 6 years. We do however strongly advise that students study two modules every three months.

Study Abroad

You may decide you want to accelerate your studies, learn about a particular subject area, study alongside other University of Bradford School of Management students or simply broaden your horizons and spend some time studying overseas. You can do this by undertaking up to three block modules (i.e. 3-5 days of intensive study) at no extra cost (other than travel, accommodation and subsistence) at the School of Management or at any one of our partner institutions in Dubai and Singapore.

Career support and prospects

The University is committed to helping students develop and enhance employability and this is an integral part of many programmes. Specialist support is available throughout the course from Career and Employability Services including help to find part-time work while studying, placements, vacation work and graduate vacancies. Students are encouraged to access this support at an early stage and to use the extensive resources on the Careers website.

Discussing options with specialist advisers helps to clarify plans through exploring options and refining skills of job-hunting. In most of our programmes there is direct input by Career Advisers into the curriculum or through specially arranged workshops.

An MBA is an opportunity to either change career direction or consolidate experience then return and progress in a previous industry or job. The Financial Times Global MBA rankings show that, on average, 20% of alumni achieve board-level positions within three years of graduation.

Normally students are required to obtain 180 Master's level credits in these modules to become a Master of Science in Renewable Energy Systems Technology graduate. However optional leave awards of Postgraduate Diploma (120 credits) or Postgraduate Certificate (60 credits) are possible.

How you will learn

All of our renewable energy MSc Modules consist of a series of Study Units, each covering a specific subject area (see programme modules). Instead of face-to-face lectures and tutorials, the main learning routes for distance learning students are via the University’s virtual learning environment (LEARN). The learning resources for each Study Unit include:
- On line study materials
- Live streamed and recorded lectures
- Virtual and remote laboratories
- Tutorials, assignments and computer aided assessments
- Access to past exam papers

In addition there are several important communication features built into LEARN which include:
- Discussion forums (for communicating with tutors and fellow learners)
- Specialist tutor groups
- Assignment and tutorial upload facility (to allow tutors to check your progress and provide you with feedback)
- Online tutorial sessions with module lectures

Distance learning students also have the option to attend on campus modules.

- Assessment
By examination, coursework, group work and research project. Examinations are held in January and May/June with coursework and group work throughout the programme. The individual MSc research project is assessed by written report and viva voce. Students receive regular feedback on their progress from on-line support officers, tutors and academic staff.

It is also possible for distance learning students to take exams at a suitable local venue either a local British council or a recognised university. For further information about this process please contact the course administrator.

- Technical Requirements
To make full use of distance learning resources, the following are minimum requirements:
- Good specification PC or laptop running the latest operating system
- A printer if you wish to print out materials
- Good computer skills (see below)
- Fast and reliable access to the Internet via Broadband

You will require the skills that allow one to:
- Open, copy, and move files and directories on your hard drive
- Move around the desktop with several applications (programmes) opened at the same time
- Create documents using a software package such as MS Word or similar.
- Be able to zip files and make pdf files
- Manipulate and analyse data using spread sheet software such as MS Excel

During the programme students build up an excellent library of well-produced bound module notes, additional resources and relevant text books. In addition to the printed version we are developing and planning to provide e-reader versions of some module notes to enhance portability.

- Assessment
For most modules, students are assessed by two written assessments (three items for core modules). The individual research dissertation module is assessed on the basis of a written dissertation and an oral when a student discusses their submitted dissertation with their supervisor and a second member of staff. For students who cannot visit the UK this oral takes place over Skype.

Careers and further study

Many WEDC students and alumni work for international NGOs (MSF, Oxfam, SCF, GOAL, WaterAid, etc.) and agencies (such as UNICEF), or National Governments. Distance Learning students already working in these sectors find their new skills to be directly relevant and readily applicable to their jobs.
Graduate job titles include WASH Coordinator, WASH Engineer, Emergency WASH Manager, Technical Adviser and Project Manager.

Facilities

Distance Learning students study from home but are welcome to visit the Loughborough campus. They can make remote use of the University Library’s electronic search facilities. They can also remotely access the WEDC ‘Knowledge Base’, which has links to many sources of useful and relevant information.

Facilities on campus include our laboratory which houses equipment for field sampling and analysis of water and wastewater, and some of the largest hydraulics equipment in the UK. Although Distance Learners will not normally have access to this equipment they can ask the advice of laboratory staff if they are carrying out fieldwork as part of their dissertation.

How you will learn

Distance Learning students study from home but are welcome to visit the Loughborough campus. They can make remote use of the University Library’s electronic search facilities and the WEDC ‘Knowledge Base’, which has links to many sources of useful and relevant information.

The programme comprises both compulsory core modules, and optional modules which may be selected. The Case Study module draws together material from across the programme. A research dissertation between 75 and 150 pages long on a chosen topic relevant to interests or career development concludes the programme. Many of the Distance Learning modules have web-based discussion forums, where Distance Learners can choose to interact with each other and Module Tutors.

The method of delivery for the learning materials is mainly portable and paper-based, to suit students who are living or working in areas of the world with poor internet connectivity, or those who travel frequently. The Institute of Computer and Communications Law (ICCL) at Queen Mary offers a programme of online distance learning that leads to the award of a University of London LLM in Computer and Communications Law.

The programme draws on our established teaching and research expertise in IT law, e-commerce law, communications law, computer law and media law.

Law as a subject is particularly suitable for online learning in that it is primarily text-based, so delivery of teaching materials is not restricted by bandwidth limitations. Most of the relevant materials for computer and communications law are available in digital format from databases such as Lexis and Westlaw to which you gain access through your Queen Mary Student account. We use a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) as a platform to deliver clear course structures, teaching materials and to create interactive courses. Your e-learning experience is enhanced by tutorials using discussion boards, blog postings and live chat for class discussions and question and answer sessions. We have designed the course to allow as much interaction and feedback between students and tutors as possible. Your understanding will be deepened by discussing your reading with fellow students and your course tutor and carrying out short tasks related to the course. We also use audio and audio-visual presentations. You will not need to have access to a local law library, a basic internet connection and browser is all that is needed to do the course.

Your degree certificate will make no distinction between the LLM Computer and Communications Law studied by presence in London and the LLM studied by Distance Learning.

Programme

Structure
You can study Computer and Communications Law to Postgraduate Certificate, Diploma or LLM level, by distance learning.

You will need to gain 180 credits for the LLM, which can be completed as follows:
◦six taught modules (may include the optional research seminar paper/presentation) as well as three 10,000-word dissertations, (or one 20,000-word dissertation in addition to one 10,000-word dissertation), or
◦eight taught modules (may include the optional research seminar paper/presentation) as well as two 10,000-word dissertations, (or, with approval, one 20,000-word dissertation)

Distance learning
Increasingly we all face more pressures in our business lives and finding the time to attend courses can be very difficult. Distance learning is the solution to your training needs; it allows you the full benefits of studying for a recognised UK university qualification whilst still in full-time employment using this freedom and flexibility to your advantage.

You can set the pace at which you learn and decide when, where and how long you want to study for.

This programme is delivered via our web-based virtual learning environment (VLE). All written assignments are submitted through the e-learning system. You are encouraged to interact with teaching staff and other students in online discussion forums, join group activities and be part of the student community.

Modules and Dissertations
The year is divided into three four-month terms, with a selection of modules and dissertations being offered each term.
◦Taught modules (15 credits)
◦Each module requires around seven and a half hours of work a week over one term. Each module will consist of assessed tasks, a module essay and final assessment exercise (take-home exam

◦Dissertations – topic of your own choice
◦10000 dissertations (30 credits) – taken over two consecutive terms
◦20000 dissertation (60 credits) – taken over four consecutive terms

◦Research seminar paper/presentation (optional) (15 credits) (January – May)
◦This involves a 30 minute presentation at the residential weekend on a topic of your choice agreed with your supervisor followed by the submission of a 5000 word essay during the May – August term.

Application Dates

You can start the LLM in Computer and Communications Law programme in either the autumn term or the spring term. You should return your completed application forms two months before the start of term. For example, for an autumn start you will need to return your forms by mid-July and for a spring start you will need to return your forms by the beginning of November.

As this is a distance learning programme, we understand that applicants may live overseas or outside London. To comply with official admissions procedures if you are made an offer all applicants will be expected to submit by post (courier) or in person certified copies of qualifications which were up-loaded when making an online application.

WHAT YOU WILL STUDY

The course consists of two modules: Development in the International Context and Project and Programme Design. This is a part-time course that is completed over two terms in one year.

Our Project and Programme Design module will give you insight into a range of approaches to development interventions, including design, implementation and management.

This introduces design methods used by NGOs and aid agencies as well as important issues sustainability and alternatives to the project approach.

We encourage you to attend conferences on subjects related to your research interests and to participate in our lively interdisciplinary seminar series (some of which are run by our postgraduates).

About the School of History and Culture

The programmes in the School of History and Cultures offer students enquiry based learning within a rich and diverse environment to stimulate debate and challenge conventional thinking.
