Our communication programmes were among the first in the UK, combining the research and teaching strengths in the School of English and Languages with the expertise of Surrey Business School.

We’ve successfully trained over 300 graduates who have left to work successfully in a wide variety of multinational and international organisations, particularly in the fields of advertising, international management, media and public relations.

PROGRAMME OVERVIEW

The MA Communication and International Marketing programme equips students with a critical understanding of communication in contemporary international marketing contexts in order to address the market needs of the international business environment.

The programme comprises six compulsory modules and two optional modules covering a wide range of disciplines. These offer numerous opportunities to apply and develop your skills through practical tasks.

It is ideal for marketing and communications professionals who wish to enhance their profile with a postgraduate qualification; and for graduates of humanities, languages or business disciplines wanting to deepen their insight into marketing across linguistic and cultural boundaries.

This programme is studied full-time over one academic year. It consists of eight taught modules and a dissertation.

EDUCATIONAL AIMS OF THE PROGRAMME

The overall purpose of the programme is to:
-Provide a comprehensive and differentiated understanding of communication and marketing communication
-Supply the tools enabling students to apply this understanding to the task of addressing the market needs of the international business environment
-Instil in students the capacity for carrying out advanced supervised research in an area of (Marketing) Communication

In particular, the programme aims to:
-Develop students’ awareness of the linguistic and cultural differences arising from the (inter)cultural encounter of Anglophone culture(s) with the diverse cultures subject to its influence
-Sensitize students to linguistic and cultural difference in the construction of everyday and institutional discourse resulting from the increased marketization of private and public services, as well as to the issues and concerns of the rapidly growing media industries
-Impart the knowledge and skills of communication and marketing necessary to enable students to compete for jobs/research opportunities in fields relevant to their degree (human resource management, advertising, international marketing), as well as PhD opportunities in this area
-Develop students’ abilities to evaluate and judiciously apply scholarship in Communication

PROGRAMME LEARNING OUTCOMES

The programme provides opportunities for students to develop and demonstrate knowledge and understanding, skills, qualities and other attributes in the following areas:

Knowledge and understanding
-Demonstrate a critical understanding of different types of communication, in particular intercultural, cross-cultural, non-mediated (face-to-face) and mediated (telephone, internet,etc.) communication
-Demonstrate a critical understanding of models of consensus-generation, agenda-setting, opinion-formation and communicative interaction
-Demonstrate an awareness of the issues and concerns involved in strategic communication, in marketing communication and intercultural communication
-Demonstrate a comprehensive knowledge of the strategies and content and methods of the marketing function, both within corporations and as a service industry
-Demonstrate a comprehensive knowledge of the strategies and processes of social interaction either spoken or written
-Demonstrate a critical understanding of the role of marketing with particular reference to international case studies
-Demonstrate an appreciation of the different frames for analysing social interaction to be applied to the research work required for the writing of the MA dissertation (this would involve the collection, analysis and manipulation of data of diverse kinds from a variety of theoretical and methodological perspectives, an awareness of the (dis)advantages of each frame and/or method and, consideration of the ethical issues involved in data collection and storage relative to the (sub) cultures examined)

This course encourages you to question the concept of development, particularly western understandings of it, and gives priority to issues and debates identified within specific countries under study rather than relying on predominantly western literature. Located at the intersection of interdisciplinary gender studies and international feminist theory, it argues that gender relations are central to processes of international development and that gender is cross-cut by other significant differences.

You’ll study core modules that address theoretical perspectives on gender and development, and their relationship to paradigms in development thought, as well as policymaking and implementation in gender and development. You’ll also receive training in social sciences research through a core module shared across all of our MA programmes. You can then apply these skills as you undertake independent research under supervision in order to complete your dissertation.

Our optional modules enable you to explore gender and development in relation to issues such as global capitalism and the labour process, human rights, and postcolonial theory. Our students have gone on to work in contexts including development agencies in their own or other countries, national or local government work, charities, private and public sector management and administration, and academic research.

Programme details

Our programme will give you a thorough understanding of the centrality of gender relations in development and how gender is cross-cut by other significant differences, such as sexuality, ‘race’/ethnicity, (dis)ability and social class. Through our two core modules you will achieve a rigorous theoretical and conceptual foundation linked to a strong practical focus on issues and policies of gender and development. A third optional core module will give you a detailed understanding of methodological debates in social research, and you'll also take at least one more gender/development module.

You will then select from a wide range of exciting and cutting-edge specialist modules, including an optional module in law and development. Optional modules provide opportunities to explore substantive issues that excite you, such as human rights, global capitalism, feminist jurisprudence, the labour process, feminist theory and epistemology, and postcolonial theory. With personal supervision from one of our leading scholars, you will then progress to research and write your own 15,000 word dissertation.

Our programme takes place in the unique academic context of both a Women and Gender Studies Research Centre, with an exciting programme of research seminars and events, and a thriving Sociology department, with a strong international research and teaching profile. The master’s programme in Gender Studies - Intersectionality and Change prepares students to act as agents for change, i.e. to actively change, develop and challenge existing norms and structures in academic careers in higher education, as well as in national and international organisations, media, communication or politics.

The programme focuses on intersectional gender, i.e. gender in interplay with other social categorizations and power differentials such as ethnicity, class, nationality, sexuality, age, (dis)ability etc. The programme will give you the opportunity to explore how processes of social and cultural change can be initiated or sustained by integrating a critical understanding of intersectional gender, by counteracting multiple inequalities and processes of discrimination, and by other kinds of transformative work.

The aim is to provide students with knowledge of theories and methodologies in Gender Studies - Intersectionality and Change, and to enable them to develop academic skills to analyse and to intervene innovatively and professionally in gendered and intersectional processes of transformation in society.

The programme builds on international research traditions. It is linked to the excellent and internationally renowned milieu for intersectional gender research at the Unit of Gender Studies, Linköping University. This is one of the largest interdisciplinary research and teaching units for Intersectional Gender Studies in the Nordic countries with a staff of more than 30 researchers, including four full professors and many PhD students.

The programme is innovative in its cutting edge approach to intersectional gender research and teaching, as well as in its strong focus on professional development and career paths. It combines online distance education with intensive on-campus seminars. The programme is also offered to the students as a campus-based education. More traditional pedagogical formats are mixed with those that focus on written and spoken performances which challenge traditional boundaries between academic and creative writing, speaking and intervening.

The programme is designed for both Swedish and international students with a bachelor’s degree in humanities or social sciences. Students attending the programme have different educational or professional backgrounds.

It aims to develop teachers who are able to work effectively across a range of pedagogical areas and practical activities to provide them with essential skills and understanding in this important area of education.

Within school-based and university environments trainees will be supported in developing a range of transferable skills related to teaching, learning and assessment; understanding of inclusive learning environments that respond to the diverse needs of pupils; the ability to work with other adults in a variety of learning environments and an understanding of relevant professional, statutory and regulatory bodies and employers.

Concepts such as equity and inclusivity of practice are promoted as being important in nurturing the potential of children regardless of age, (dis)ability, gender or ethnic background. About the Tizard Centre

The Tizard Centre is part of the School of Social Policy, Sociology and Social Research (SSPSSR) and has excellent links with health and social care organisations, and other relevant establishments.

Accreditation of Prior Learning and Prior Experiential Learning may be possible on this programme. You can transfer between this programme and other programmes offered by Tizard and also between levels, subject to meeting admission requirements.

Coursework is taught through a mixture of web-based resources, directed reading, videos, lectures, seminars and practical sessions, supported by a number of workshops, where you work with skilled professionals and have the opportunity to share ideas and experiences with fellow students.

As a distance learning option all lectures are available via the web and our distance learning IT officer is available to provide technical support.

Note: Workshop one and exam attendance is compulsory for all postgraduate distance learners on this course.

Assessment

Each of the four taught modules is assessed by a one-hour, web-based, multiple-choice exam and an extended essay. In addition, the Research Methods module involves short assignments and a worked problem. Placements are assessed by two 2,000-word service reports and one 4,000-word case report, plus feedback by placement supervisors.

Our programmes support their continuing professional development and enhance their opportunities for career advancement. Other students, who are at the beginning of their careers, move on to a range of professional roles in health and social care including working as psychologists in learning disability or behavioural specialists in community learning disability teams; service management of development roles; clinical psychology training or a PhD.
