About us

We are proud of our national reputation as a leader in the field of business law. As one of Australia's largest and most versatile business law departments, we offer a comprehensive teaching and research program focusing on commercial law and regulation in the rapidly growing Asia-Pacific region.

Our Department has established a strong reputation for:

- publishing in leading international publications
- attracting the highest quality postgraduate students
- engaging in international collaboration
- securing external research funding.

According to the Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) Report (2012), the discipline of law received a rating of five-stars (well above world standard). Our staff have won numerous major teaching awards within the Monash Business School and at Monash University. Several of our staff are authors of leading textbooks used throughout Australia and around the world.

Research expertise

The Department's research activities in corporations law, taxation law, employment law, Asian law and international business law are carried out through three research groups. Each group regularly sponsors international symposia and work with partner groups at European, North American, Asian and Australasian universities. These research groups are:

- Asia-Pacific Business Regulation Group
- Workplace and Corporate Law Research Group
- Taxation Law and Policy Research Group.

Our expertise in these areas has resulted in the Department receiving a number of national and international competitive research grants. Our active and high quality doctoral program has been recognised as one of the world's best, attracting PhD students from four continents.

Teaching Excellence

The Department of Business Law and Taxation is responsible for business law and taxation teaching in the Monash Business School. The Department teaches units in the undergraduate and graduate programs offered by the Faculty. These units recognise that knowledge of law and taxation is essential for the informed business professional.

The Department of Business Law and Taxation provides Monash business students with a rare opportunity to learn from staff focused on business law, rather than the broader law program.

Engagement and collaboration

Business Law and Taxation staff carry out research activities in conjunction with:

- the business community
- the accounting and legal professions
- government agencies
- social welfare bodies
- international organisations.

Department academics have been seconded to assist government agencies including the Treasury and Australian Taxation Office.

We regularly work with international agencies such as the International Monetary Fund and Asian Development Bank to assist with the development of business and tax laws across the Asia-Pacific region.

The course explores the security, ethical, legal and economic dimensions of international relations. You will examine key issues in foreign policy, world order, European studies, crisis management and terrorism, as well as the gender, development, migration and governance aspects of global politics. We offer four specialisations:

- Governance and security
- International diplomacy and trade
- Political violence and counter-terrorism
- General international relations studies

The Master of International Relations will help you make sense of the complexity of global politics and economics by giving you the analytical perspectives and skills to see both the 'bigger picture' and detailed aspects of specific issues, with a solid intellectual grounding in key debates, historical events and political institutions.

You will be taught by leading experts in their respective fields, who have strong networks with a number of international and local organisations. This ensures that you will be exposed to the very latest advances in international relations.

The course also provides opportunities to study and attend field schools abroad, and to develop research interests in a number of areas. You will have the opportunity to take advantage of Monash's global presence, with campuses in South Africa, Malaysia, China, and Italy. And our internship program enables you to build practical experience as well as valuable professional networks in Australia and overseas.

These active research links shape our curriculum and ensure its relevance to provide you with the best employment and research opportunities. Our graduates have gone on to a broad range of occupations and have, for example, been employed by the United Nations, the Australian Government, and non-governmental organisations such as the International Red Cross.

The MA Program in Cultural Diplomacy and International Music is a one year program offered by the University of the West of Scotland in partnership with the Academy for Cultural Diplomacy.

Credits - 90 ECTS Credits

Length - 2 Trimesters (plus Dissertation)

Location - Paisley, Scotland and Berlin, Germany

Tuition - €9,000

The opportunity exists to create a programme to educate professionals who intend to become involved in international diplomatic relations which function using the “soft power” of music. These individuals may be involved in planning and co-ordinating the staging of international live events (International music festivals, opening ceremonies for international sports events), recording or broadcast of international music projects (War Child charity, Eurovision Song Contest) or managing long-running cross-border / cross-cultural initiatives (Nerve Centre in Derry, British Council music events). These projects often work across boundaries where trade and political diplomacy have failed, hence retaining communication channels and inter-cultural connections. The emerging professional requires not just an understanding of music and diplomacy but also entrepreneurship, the global music industries, social media communication and distribution platforms, project management, negotiation skills, language skills and team management abilities. In addition to this they may find themselves working with local and national governments. They should therefore also be able to communicate clearly and effectively and understand the language of policy and exchange. The work may be focused on raising national prestige on a global stage, social re-generation, multi-culturalism or cultural liaison (or all of these). Projects are likely to require international music project management, enhanced communication (verbal and digital) skills and an understanding of global creative communities.

The program addresses contemporary international issues, with classroom seminars and lectures, as well as educational & cultural events, conferences, professional trainings, tours, visits and meetings with foreign officials, which are further incorporated into the curriculum. Students will meet with leading experts working in international organizations, embassies, and academic institutions, and will engage with specialists in the areas of International Relations & Economics, Business, Communication, Politics, Human Rights, Culture, Peace Building, Multilateral Diplomacy, Conflict Resolution, and Development.

The program provides students with practical experience for both academic and professional development, preparing students for careers in diverse fields, such as international relations, the humanities, politics, and culture, foreign policy and international economics. On a practical level, the international environment of the Center for Cultural Diplomacy Studies offers students a unique opportunity to interact with leading experts and academics at a wide variety of international organizations and research centers. This exceptional learning environment leads to original research and independent study opportunities. It allows students to create a solid professional network and form a concrete base for future academic and professional career choices, preparing students for engagement in the international arena, civil society, politics, governmental organizations and international economic organizations, as well as the private sector.

Program Structure
The program consists of 90 ECTS credits in total and has duration of two trimesters, and a Thesis to be submitted towards the completion of the program. The first trimester of the program is hosted by the University of the West of Scotland in Paisley and the second trimester is hosted by the Institute for Cultural Diplomacy in Berlin. This unique structure of the program provides the students with the advantage of learning in 2 different major European cities and thus the opportunity to gain academic, professional and personal experience from living in different cultures. Furthermore, the program’s structure provides a unique opportunity to benefit from the study environment in both an international non-governmental organization and a traditional public University.

About the Course

The Master of Arts in International Relations and Diplomacy is an academic program that prepares students not only for careers in the foreign service, in intergovernmental organizations, or international businesses, but also in such fields as journalism, non-governmental watchdogs or NGOs, foreign policy think tanks and academic research. The program combines problem solving, structural analysis, project development and management with a comprehensive theoretical and critical examination of the political, cultural, legal, and socioeconomic practices that make up our increasingly interdependent and complex world.

Because the political and economic problems central to foreign relations today invariably transcend national boundaries, the international agenda encompasses technological, religious, ethno-linguistic, and humanitarian concerns, as well as the more traditional area of diplomatic activity. Drawing from multiple fields including finance, law, history, philosophy, and theology, this program is decidedly interdisciplinary.

The MA International Policy and Diplomacy addresses key issues associated with the way countries of the world co-exist, in the face of rapid change.

The process of globalisation has increased the importance of policy making and implementation in a wide range of universal and regional organisations, as well as between states (and especially in a multilateral context).

A study of diplomacy can be appropriately grounded in the global policy context. State-centric images of the world have come under considerable challenge and there is important scope for a focus on the policy context of this trend. Diplomacy is studied in terms of the complex and wide-ranging means for official communication and in the context of the many types of intergovernmental organisations and their links with a growing transnational environment of international non-governmental organisations.
