Moving to one campus

Between 2016 and 2020 we're investing £125 million in the London Metropolitan University campus, moving all of our activity to our current Holloway campus in Islington, north London. This will mean the teaching location of some courses will change over time.

Whether you will be affected will depend on the duration of your course, when you start and your mode of study. The earliest moves affecting new students will be in September 2017. This may mean you begin your course at one location, but over the duration of the course you are relocated to one of our other campuses. Our intention is that no full-time student will change campus more than once during a course of typical duration.

Description

In an age where so much of what we do is mobile, networked and mediated by digital culture and technology, digital humanities play an important role in exploring how we create and share knowledge. On this course, we will develop and enhance your awareness and understanding of a range of subjects that are relevant to the digitally mediated study of human culture, including:

  • How we model human culture using computers and how we can create memory and knowledge environments which facilitate new insights or new ways of working with the human record.
  • How the ethos of openness that the internet encourages – open access, open data – influences the knowledge economy.
  • The role of digital culture in changing concepts of authorship, editing and publication.
  • The potential application and limitations of big data techniques to further the study of human culture in an era of information overload.
  • The place of coding in our digital interactions with culture and cultural heritage.

We will give you a broad understanding of the most important applications of digital methods and technologies to humanities research questions and what they do and don’t allow us to do. You will be able to scope, build and critique practical experiments in digital research with an arts, humanities and cultural sector focus, and you will learn to provide critical commentary on the relationship between creativity, digital technology and the study of human culture.

Course purpose

The MA in Digital Humanities is designed to develop your understanding of digital theory and practice in studying human culture, from the perspectives of academic scholarship, cultural heritage and the commercial world.

Course format and assessment

Teaching

If you are a full-time student, we will provide 120 to 180 hours of teaching through lectures and seminars, and we will expect you to undertake 1674 hours of independent study.

If you are a part-time student, we will provide 90 hours of teaching through lectures and seminars in your first year, and 50 hours in your second. We will expect you to undertake 720 hours of independent study in your first year and 954 hours in your second.

Assessment

We will assess our modules entirely through coursework, which will mostly take the form of essays, with some project work.

The established and exciting degree is designed to help you understand digital transformations in media, culture and society and apply this understanding in practice, in the media and creative industries and in further research. You will be equipped with skills that can be applied to current and future developments in digital media, social media, computing and other aspects of technology.

The MA in Digital Media educates aspiring media practitioners and academics as well as early and mid-career professionals who seek to reflect on their roles in a structured and stimulating learning environment designed to give all students up-to-the-minute knowledge of digital media and the skills to apply that knowledge to future developments.

The MA offers two pathways:

Pathway 1 is a theory programme where you learn about developments in digital media and technology from a wide range of perspectives

Pathway 2 is a theory and practice programme where you can explore transformations in media, culture and society through the practice of contemporary digital communication. You will work with one or more of the following to create installations, apps and single- and multi-screen work that's responsive to the continually changing digital landscape:

Our students have access to state-of-the-art facilities including well-equipped lecture and seminar rooms, exhibition spaces, computer facilities and digital media suites.

The department is also currently host to the renowned philosopher of media and technology, Bernard Stiegler and students will have access to his modulein Media Philosophy as well as priority access to the innovative and popular option After New Media. Designed to complement the MA in Digital Media, this course provides a framework for thinking about the current media environment as well as future forms of human and computer interaction.

An established record

The MA in Digital Media has been redefining media theory and practice since 2004. Our students become proficient in:

  • the history, sociology and philosophy of digital media
  • the application of critical conceptual skills to specialist areas and future forms of media
  • multimedia skills in image making (photography, video, animation, graphic art) script writing, journalism and documentary 

MA Digital Media students have access to the pioneering option ‘After New Media’, currently a non-assessed online module which explores the themes of self mediation, ethical mediation and intelligent mediation, and develops a framework for thinking about 'life' after new media. As well as accessing a series of podcasts, students are offered reading groups and a masterclass with Professor Sarah Kember co-author of the book Life After New Media on which the course is based.

The questions we ask

From delivering news on wearables, to the latest developments in live reporting, the questions we ask are informed by an industry panel featuring the heads of digital at organisations including The Guardianthe Financial Times, and the BBC. We want to define the transformative nature of digital journalism so we explore critical and entrepreneurial approaches and get hands-on, experimenting with the latest journalistic innovations. 

The processes we use

It’s really important for us that you graduate with a set of core digital journalism skills so half of the degree focuses on the computing side of the discipline and half on media and communications. This means you get a holistic MA, where you study the foundations of digital journalism and practise it in its most current forms.

You’ll have the chance to study multimedia and interactive journalism, look at interactive documentaries, digital reporting, and video journalism. You’ll also learn coding, so you can get to grips with using algorithms and data sets, and do social network analysis to monitor what’s going on behind the screens.

The approach we take

Through our partnerships with BBC news labs and The Times’ development team, we make sure we’re keeping up with industry but also working with it. 

We want you to reimagine the medium while you’re here, so you get the chance to specialise in your own area of interest for your final project. This could be anything from an interactive website to a video production using interactive story telling and text. We offer a lot of support when it comes to the coding side of the course. A boot camp before the start of the programme gives you an introduction to some of the techniques and languages. 

What you go away with are the core skills for news writing, video, and computational techniques and some amazing industry contacts.

Students without a technical background will be encouraged to take our pre-session Digital Bootcamp in September to gain a basic literacy in digital fundamentals, and to get to know fellow students.

As well as exploring the history of PR and how its relationship with journalism has developed and evolved over the years, you will examine the ethical issues surrounding PR and the ways PR can contribute to the management and protection of an organisation or individual’s reputation.

This programme offers you the opportunity to focus on digital communications strategies as well as more traditional public relations practice.

COURSE STRUCTURE

This 12 month postgraduate course aims to produce highly-skilled graduates who are able to operate professionally in today’s PR and digital communication-related industries.

You will develop cutting-edge knowledge and understanding of the role and influence of PR and digital communication within contemporary society, and the demands on and opportunities for PR and digital communication professionals.

This course will involve developing a professional level of practical skills and understanding in the devising and implementation of PR campaign strategies To develop systematic and advanced research techniques for the evaluation and analysis of critical texts and aspects of current research and scholarship at the forefront of the field of Public Relations and digital communications.

In the first trimester, you will study Public Relations & Journalism and Content Creation modules, which will provide a solid basis on which to develop your skills.

The modules you will study in the second trimester are Understanding PR Campaigns, which looks at case studies and strategies, and Professional PR Practice, which incorporates an industry work placement.

In the third trimester, you will work on a Major Project or a Dissertation.

TEACHING

  • Delivery will include lectures and presentations, seminars and workshops, aimed at development of students’ understanding of the theory and practice of PR and digital communications.
  • Workshops and seminars will explore and develop students’ understanding of PR as an evolving industry. 
  • Visiting speakers from within the industry and related sectors.

CAREER PROSPECTS

Public Relations is one of the fastest growing professions in the UK, employing 62,000 people in 2015.

The importance of the digital economy, and the opportunities and challenges it presents, has been noted by a Lords Select Committee. Its report, entitled Make or Break: The UK’s Digital Future, emphasises the urgent need, at HE level, for industry input, so that graduates are learning job-relevant digital skills. This illustrates the employability value of a postgraduate programme in Public Relations and Digital Communications.

The programme would prepare graduates for work within PR and Digital Communication related industries and feeds into this skills gap in the PR and communications industries. However, it will also provide key transferable skills that are increasingly sought after in today’s job market.

Graduates may go on to secure jobs in the PR and digital communication sectors and also undertake roles in content creation – for example, copywriting, SEO and analytics

For your master’s degree project, you will specify and then produce a substantial digital media artefact which reflects your own interests and career plans. Course structure

The course is designed to train digital effects artists to work in industry. Our successful former students are working in London and for international companies in areas ranging from television graphics to architectural visualisation. Although the thrust of the course is towards high end film special effects and animation, the standards and techniques you learn allow you to work in numerous other areas of digital effects.

The primary industry jobs the course is oriented towards include: technical directors in assistant, creature development, lighting effects, look development roles, compositors in compositing, digital paint and roto roles, modellers and trackers/matchmovers. For a smaller project or company roles would include that of a 3D generalist, 3D artist, effects artist or compositor. These are not easy to achieve, as global competition is fierce and success depends on much better than average concentration and constant practise to grasp the essence and modern techniques of digital visual effects.

Module Details

The aim of this programme is to make you aware of the current practices relating to digital marketing. You will become aware of the latest developments in the field and you will also be equipped with the practical skills to implement them.

MA Digital Marketing includes two teaching periods and is followed by 2-3 months of independent study during which time you complete a practical project.

Teaching Period 1

Essentials of Marketing: This will provide you with a solid foundation for the advanced study of marketing. No prior knowledge of marketing is assumed but students will be expected to assimilate information rapidly and reflect upon the concepts discussed.

Contemporary Issues in Marketing: This unit will examine a number of contemporary issues related to marketing theory and practice. The unit will draw extensively on the expertise of industry experts and students will be expected to engage with the issues that marketing managers are dealing with.

Digital Marketing Strategy: The unit focuses on examining the strategies and methods used to design and manage digital media based marketing campaigns. An intrinsic part of this unit is to develop an understanding of the importance of applying a range of analytical and conceptual models to the technical and creative aspects of design of digital media marketing

Teaching Period 2

Digital Communication and Media Development: You will review the digital media development process, assess the potential of a range of applications and use software and multimedia-authoring tools to develop a digital marketing campaign.

Digital Media Marketing Development Project: The project enables you to demonstrate and showcase what you have learnt during the taught programme.

The project consists of:
Systems specification for a digital marketing campaign
Functional model/prototype developed from the above, using appropriate software tools
Critical assessment of the project in terms of design, functionality and end user interface

Programme Assessment

Teaching methods range from tutor-led presentation of material, in-class exercises to case study analysis, problem solving exercises, student presentation and in-class discussion. There will be significant use and exploration of marketing software systems and media application software.

Assessment will take the form of coursework assignments which may involve group work, presentations, case study analyses or reports and examinations which may be closed or open book. You will be allocated a personal tutor for the duration of their programme to offer you help and advice during your studies. A project supervisor is allocated to each student in April/May and provides support throughout the project period.

Teaching methods

The MA Multimedia Journalism at GCU includes all the key skills and knowledge you will need to begin a career in journalism.

Shorthand, Government, Law, and News & Online Writing are all compulsory subjects, with classes in these subjects and skills running every week for the entire length of the diploma programme.

In the first trimester, each week you will have practical classes in news reporting and feature writing; sub-editing & print production; and radio/TV/online journalism and production skills; as well as a weekly class studying and reflecting on Journalism in Context.

Then in second trimester the practical balance moves towards more demanding specialist reporting skills (court, council, financial, for example), and live multimedia newsday team productions, plus a specialist option.

The programme therefore is quite intense and the timetable busy, but nevertheless in each trimester almost one-third of the 39 hours in the week's timetable is left free, to enable you to do the reporting work off-campus and self-directed production practice your subjects will require you to put in.

Assessment methods

Each module is assessed separately: such as continuous coursework; exams or tests (Shorthand, and News days -which are in effect a group exam lasting a whole day); and some by a combination of coursework and NCTJ examinations (Law, Government).

All practical journalism assignments each week will be marked to appropriate professional standards of accuracy in fact and use of English. While the briefs you are given for your practical assignments are specific, your chosen story or subject can be up to you much of the time.

Shorthand is assessed by three attempts each semester at the relevant speed, with your single best performance being taken. You must achieve an absolute minimum of 60 words per minute (wpm), and we encourage you to go on to achieve 80, 90 and 100 wpm:100wpm is the recommended minimum speed for working on a newspaper and preparing for the next professional qualification after your Masters, the NCTJ's Qualification in Journalism (NQJ).

Work placement

You are guided by a journalist lecturer advisor in seeking and obtaining not less than 10 days' work experience in a journalism organisation by the end of the diploma, and not less than a further ten days by the end of the Masters.

Mostly this will be undertaken during vacation and assessment weeks, but there are possibilities of individual day shifts and up to one week only during teaching weeks, by negotiation with the programme leader.

Agreements are in place for placements with all major news and journalism organisations in Scotland, across TV , radio, newspapers, magazines and online.

Industry-standard facilities

You will have access to modern digital equipment in industry-standard facilities including our new, purpose-built multimedia newsroom to produce television and radio news packages, HD TV studio, and two digital radio presentation studios.
