Strategy & Planning for Digital and Social Media Communications (30 credits)
This unit is assessed through one piece of coursework. You are required to develop a digital marketing strategy and plan for an organisation of your choice. The digital skills gap is widely recognised as a major barrier to organisations maximising the benefits of successful digital marketing. The unit takes a detailed view of developing a digital and social media communications strategy and plan. Learn from digital marketing specialists – each with active practitioner experience in their fields, such as email marketing, search, social media, mobile. You will also work on live client briefs – utilising the skills you develop through the unit content.

International Brand Strategy
This unit introduces you to the role and nature of brand development and management within an international environment. You will be introduced to a range of issues such as: the brand development process; brand architecture and management; global v local brand strategy, international macro-environment, international culture, corporate branding; international brand strategy and the role semiotics and marketing communications play in the brand development process. You will be assessed through a combination of coursework and exam.

Investigating Business Practice (marketing communications live client brief, 15 credits)
This unit involves working with a client on a live brief with other students. This will develop your communication skills, ability to work with others (students and clients), and will require some independent work to meet the requirements of the brief. The brief is normally a marketing communications issue that needs addressing for an organisation.

Research Methods
This unit covers a range of areas. Initially the focus is on developing your study skills, especially the ability to research and critique journal articles. You will be learning about research philosophy, qualitative and quantitative research methods in order to prepare you for your dissertation.

Dissertation
You will complete an outline topic form in order for a supervisor to be allocated. With the help of your supervisor you will submit initially a research proposal, which is marked and worth 15% of your overall grade for the unit. Once this has been approved you will continue to work under the guidance of your supervisor and complete a 12-15,000 word dissertation on a topic of your choice, relating to marketing communications (worth 85% of your overall grade for this unit). This will be submitted in September at the end of your course.

This course was designed in conjunction with The Institute of Direct and Digital Marketing (IDM), the leading body for the professional development of direct, data and digital marketing and will develop both the theoretical and practical knowledge of digital and marketing concepts that are vital in today's business environment.

The focus of this programme is to equip future marketing managers with the knowledge and understanding of the traditional academic theories, concepts and frameworks of marketing strategy and planning and be able to apply them in the contemporary digital environment. Students will learn the strategic importance of technical change and innovation in the context of information technology and knowledge management. It is anticipated that a high number of students applying for this course will be in full-time employment. Therefore a number of flexible study routes are offered:

Traditional campus based course

Full-time route (12 months)

This route require you to take three modules over one semester starting in January and finishing in June. You will then have until December to submit your 20,000-word dissertation. International students will need to study full time and complete the whole course in two semesters due to visa requirements.

Part-time route (24 months)

The part time route will enable modules to be taken over two semesters. Starting in January you will finish the taught element 12 months later and will then have until the following December to complete your 20,000 word dissertation.

Blended route (24 months)

The blended learning route will enable you to study at home for two semesters before progressing to the dissertation. Each semester will include one or two intensive workshops introducing the core subjects, which are then supported extensively by online learning materials, presentations and webinars. Starting in January you will finish the taught element 12 months later and will then have until thefollowing December to complete your 20,000 word dissertation.

This module provides a theoretical look at the world of consumers and their behaviour in the digital environment, drawing on consumer behaviour, product, brand and communications theories to interpret and understand how consumers are respond to different technologies. This module sets out to enable students to learn how to operationalise the key marketing, consumer behaviour and communication theories to enable students to critically appraise the swiftly changing digital marketing channels in the light of marketing theory.

- Digital and social media (10 credits)
This module provides an intensely practical education in the core digital technologies, such as websites, search, display media, affiliate networks and mobile. Students will explore how they are being used and can assist in the delivery of marketing goals.

- Research methods (20 credits)
This module provides students with the learning, tools and techniques necessary for the completion of their dissertation, the final component for students wishing to obtain a Master's degree in Digital Marketing. Students will learn about the methods and tools of research and develop an understanding of the logic, sequence and structure of a research project, thus enabling students to design a logical structure for their dissertations. The aim of the module is to ensure that students are aware of the vast array of methodologies available to them and facilitating their ability to produce an original piece of work which adds to their existent body of knowledge and will help students explore the sources and types of information required for the research projects and the practical challenges associated with obtaining information.

Format

The Digital Marketing masters degree course uses a combination of teaching methods and sources of expertise. Tutorials and blended-learning materials introduce theories, digital marketing knowledge and skills which are further explored through a series of practitioner-led workshops. All modules develop both the theoretical and the practical and are assessed in part through live projects in collaboration with related businesses, allowing you to develop your portfolio and build linkages and contacts within industry. You can engage with the course in a number of different modes:

Full-time Study

In full-time mode, you will learn through a combination of online exercises, digital marketing workshops, presentations and lab tutorials. Course Overview

The course consists of two parts, a taught Part 1 and an Independent Research Project in Part 2. Part 1 must be completed successfully before Part 2 can be attempted.

Part I introduces students to key concepts and aspects of Marketing and Digital Marketing. It is designed to enable students to critically engage with theory and practical issues related to Digital Marketing. The modules selected focus on topics central to contemporary thinking in Digital Marketing. Together, this part accounts for 120 credits.

Part 2 of the programme centres on an independent piece of work which is achieved with supervisor support. This part accounts for 60 credits, and can take one of three forms: a traditional dissertation; an integrated case study or a business proposal. Students will discuss and negotiate topic ideas with their allocated supervisor or the Programme Director, towards the end of Part 1 of the programme and will be guided as to which of the three options of dissertation, integrated case study or business development proposal would be best suited to their ideas.

Organisations today face many challenges and opportunities. As technology has evolved and consumer needs and wants have changed, organisations once dominant in their industries have faltered (eg, think Nokia, Yellow Pages, Kodak, or Sony), and organisations which were lesser known have prospered and come to dominate the markets they serve (think Google, Tata or Huawei). More recently, even the mighty Apple has come under increased threat from competitors who have arguably understood customer needs better, and who have been able to provide customers with superior value.

The MSc in Marketing will help you understand these issues and provide you with the skills to apply your knowledge to real world marketing challenges.

This programme is for business and management graduates as well as non-business graduates who wish to enhance their marketing knowledge and expertise. Assessment

The programme involves a taught and a project component. The taught programme is assessed by a mixture of coursework assignments throughout the year, and by examinations in May and June.

Once these are completed, students then work full time on the Marketing Report. This provides an opportunity to apply the techniques and insights presented in the programme and apply them to a particular problem area.

Programme aims

This programme aims to:

- provide a pre-experience Master’s programme, and develop specialist skills and knowledge in marketing and management, for those wishing to pursue a career in marketing and/or management
- educate individuals as managers and marketing specialists and thus improve the quality of marketing and management as a profession, through a multi-disciplinary approach to understanding markets and consumers
- provide preparation for and/or development of a career in marketing and/or management by developing skills at a professional or equivalent level, or as preparation for research or further study in the area
- add value to first degrees by developing in students an integrated and critically aware understanding of marketing and management within a wide range of organisations, and assist them to take effective roles within such organisations
- develop students’ knowledge and understanding of a variety of organisations, and the external context in which they operate
- develop the ability of individuals to critically apply marketing and management theories in a range of different contexts, through the development of cognitive, critical and intellectual skills, research skills and relevant personal and interpersonal skills

Our programme is delivered by a group of world-renowned scholars, with expertise and practical experience in international marketing. It is highly international, with a faculty from over 10 countries and a diverse student body from all regions of the world.

The international scope of our marketing programme will appeal to students with or without a marketing background who wish to embark on a career in marketing. King’s is a research-intensive university and our programme makes reference to research findings in order to provide additional insights into international marketing. Various educational approaches are utilised to enable you to develop your decision-making skills and link marketing theory and practice such as case-study analysis, computer simulation, exercises and experiments as well as traditional lectures.

After completing a series of core modules you may pursue electives in a range of areas including brand management, digital and business-to-business marketing, and international marketing communications.

Our degree prepares you to undertake a critical analysis of strategic international marketing issues (planning, practice and theory). The programme is designed for people seeking a part-time route to an MSc International Marketing.
