The MA in Learning and Technology responds to the demand for qualified professionals in the field of technology-mediated learning and education and the need for management level individuals who have the knowledge, skills and ability to assume the leadership roles that are required to plan, design, develop, implement and evaluate contemporary learning environments.

Being founded on principles of networked learning; open pedagogy and digital mindset means that students create and build on their digital presence in order to collaborate and contribute meaningfully to digital learning networks and communities in the field throughout their program. The virtual symposium at the beginning and end of the program is one of the many opportunities for students to engage in, cultivate and contribute back to these digital learning networks and communities as they learn more about facilitating in contemporary learning environments.

The program has three exit pathways; a thesis; secondary research paper or digital learning-consulting project. Graduates of the program work in the creation and evaluation of contemporary digital learning environments. They use their theoretical and practical knowledge to critically analyze learning innovations and assess their impact on organizations and society. The cross-sectoral skill set cultivated in the program enables graduates to lead and support their organizations to continually improve the learning experiences they offer.

Professional Certification

The MA in Learning and Technology program is recognized by the Institute of Performance and Learning. Graduates of the program receive credit towards the work experience requirements of the Certified Training and Development Professional (CTDP) certification. Students in the MA in Learning and Technology program are also eligible for an International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO) certificate.

Outcomes

The School of Education and Technology works with a program learning outcomes framework that informs the course learning outcomes. Delivery Model

Proximity to the RRU campus doesn’t have to be an issue. You can choose to do your program completely online or you can include a 2-week on-campus residency in your program. The majority of this program is experienced through online learning as both the fully online and blended programs come together in the third online course and continue online for the duration of the program. Using a combination of Web 2.0/3.0 technologies for learning, you will engage, collaborate, share, create and contribute to the learning experience from anywhere in the world. The courses are designed for flexibility of access while at the same time achieving a balance between individual work and teamwork. Regular contribution in the form of blog posts, discussions or other course activities is required.

Completion Options
The first six foundational courses are common to all students in the program. Then there are the following options for program completion.

Thesis Track
Students apply to the thesis track in their first year of the program. If the application is not successful they have the option of completing the program following the Research Paper or Digital Learning Consulting Project tracks. Students who are admitted to the 12-credit thesis track will identify a research area of focus and work 1:1 with a thesis supervisor on primary research. View recent student research titles.

Research Paper Track
Students taking this track will be engaged in additional course experiences including inquiry-based courses that require them to co-create their learning experience with the course instructor. They will then take an advanced research course in preparation for their 6-credit secondary research paper. Students who choose this track will engage in a deep investigation on a specific research question using secondary data. Previous secondary research papers have included meta-synthesis; critical literature reviews; policy analysis, etc.

Digital Learning Consulting Project
Students taking this track will be engaged in additional course experiences including inquiry-based courses that require them to co-create their learning experience with the course instructor. They will then take an advanced research course in preparation for their 6-credit digital learning consulting project. Students who choose this track will gain hands-on practical experience that will help them apply their theoretical knowledge in a real-world setting on tightly scoped project and provide the research informed justification and rationale for the design decisions made. Projects are sourced from a variety of program-industry stakeholder groups. Student proposed projects may also be considered.

The department is also currently host to the renowned philosopher of media and technology, Bernard Stiegler and students will have access to his modulein Media Philosophy as well as priority access to the innovative and popular option After New Media. Designed to complement the MA in Digital Media, this course provides a framework for thinking about the current media environment as well as future forms of human and computer interaction.

An established record

The MA in Digital Media has been redefining media theory and practice since 2004. Our students become proficient in:

the history, sociology and philosophy of digital media
the application of critical conceptual skills to specialist areas and future forms of media
multimedia skills in image making (photography, video, animation, graphic art) script writing, journalism and documentary
MA Digital Media students have access the pioneering option ‘After New Media’, a non-assessed online module which explores the themes of self mediation, ethical mediation and intelligent mediation, and develops a framework for thinking about 'life' after new media. As befits a course of this kind we will be combining media, and exploring their pedagogic potential – uniting digital-online technologies with more traditional teaching formats, such as reading groups, seminars and an end of year symposium.

Programme overview

This is an exciting programme which offers a critical, contextual and practical approach to digital media and technology. It problematises approaches to the 'new' media in academic and professional debate, especially those which overemphasise the potential for radical social change led by a homogenised technology itself.

The programme is defined by its resistance to technological determinism and its insistence on the importance of addressing the social and historical contexts within which a range of media technologies are employed. In order to provide a contextual framework and facilitate the conceptualisation of digital media and technologies as fully cultural forms and processes, the programme will draw on a range of disciplines including: media and cultural studies, sociology, anthropology and philosophy. However, the programme will remain focused on key contemporary concerns about the potential role of digital media in society and on refiguring the contours of the 'new' media debate.

The programme offers two pathways. Pathway 1 addresses central theoretical and conceptual concerns relating to digital media. Pathway 2 combines theoretical analysis and practical work, offering students the opportunity to explore new media theories and concepts in practice. Pathway 2 is primarily aimed at students who already have some experience in one of the areas on offer: documentary; digital photography and image making; journalism; writing. It is meant to appeal to media industry professionals who are keen to reflect critically on their practice within a structured learning environment, graduates of practice-based courses but also those who have gained their practical experience in documentary; digital photography and image making; journalism or writing in informal settings.

Programme structure

The first compulsory core course is Digital Media - critical perspectives and this is taught in a small workshop format in the Autumn term. This course functions as a foundation for the second core course and offers students a map of the key debates in digital media. The course is taught in ten two hour workshop sessions and is supported by the provision of one-to-one tutorials.

The second compulsory core course is Technology and Cultural Form - debates, models, dialogues and this develops questions of technology, power, politics and subjectivity which were introduced in the first core course. The first part of this course highlights the key conceptual concerns of a contextualised approach to digital media plus the relevant debates and models formulated by key figures in the field. The second part of this course aims to generate a dialogue between theoreticians and practitioners around some of the most intellectually stimulating, contentious and contemporary ideas in the field without necessarily seeking a resolution. This course is taught in ten two hour workshop sessions during the Spring term and is supported by the weekly provision of one-to-one tutorials.

Students are required to take options from the lists provided by the Media and Communications, Anthropology, Comparative Literature and Sociology Departments as well as the Centre for Cultural Studies. Examples might include: After New Media, Nature and Culture, Cultural Theory, Globalisation, Risk and Control, Embodiment and Experience, Political Communications. Options are taught primarily through lectures and seminars and take place in the Autumn or Spring terms.

Each student's option profile is discussed with the programme convenor in order to ensure that the balance of subject-specific topics is appropriate for the individual concerned. Option courses are taught primarily through lectures, seminars and tutorials and take place in the Autumn or Spring terms.

All students are required to produce either a 12,000 word dissertation on a topic agreed by the student and supervisor or a practice/theory project in the area of documentary, photography and image making, journalism or fiction. The length of the practical element is dependent on the media and the form used and will be agreed in advance with the supervisor. It will, however, be comparable with practical projects undertaken in practice MA programmes in the relevant field. Students undertaking the practice/theory project will also be expected to submit a 3-4000 word analysis of their practice which locates it within the theoretical debates explored in the MA as a whole. This essay may be presented as a separate document or as an integral part of the project depending on the nature of the project and by a agreement with both theory and practice supervisors.

Programme outcomes

The programme's subject specific learning outcomes require students to analyse and contextualise developments in digital media and technology with reference to key debates in the history, sociology, anthropology and philosophy of the media. Students who opt for the practice/theory pathway will also be required to produce material of publishable or broadcast standard and to evaluate the ways in which theoretical and practical insights intersect. All students will develop a wide range of transferable qualities and skills necessary for employment in related or unrelated areas. These are described by the Quality Assurance Agency as: 'the exercise of initiative and personal responsibility, decision-making in complex and unpredictable situations, and the independent learning ability required for continuing professional development'.

By the end of the programme students will be able to:

-Map and critically evaluate key debates in the field of new media
-Analyse and contextualise current and future developments in digital media and technology
-Evaluate and articulate key historical, sociological, anthropological and philosophical approaches to the study of digital media and technology
-Demonstrate in-depth knowledge of at least four differing areas of inquiry
-Demonstrate an advanced level of conceptual knowledge and (where relevant) practical skill appropriate for a sustained piece of work in the field
-Prepare and deliver clearly argued and informed work
-Locate, retrieve and present relevant information for a specific project
-Manage a complex array of competing demands and work effectively to a deadline
-Work resourcefully and independently
-Think critically and/or work practically within a given context

We actually try to analyse human visual DNA, you memories, feelings, thoughts about the future, anticipations, etc by creating personality quizzes where instead of verbal answers we tend to use images.

My role is as Creative Developer. It involves working with images from concept to finding/shooting and post-production. My qualifications perfectly matched what they’ve been looking for, Digital Media rocks!

Moving to one campus

Between 2016 and 2020 we're investing £125 million in the London Metropolitan University campus, moving all of our activity to our current Holloway campus in Islington, north London. This will mean the teaching location of some courses will change over time.

Whether you will be affected will depend on the duration of your course, when you start and your mode of study. The earliest moves affecting new students will be in September 2017. This may mean you begin your course at one location, but over the duration of the course you are relocated to one of our other campuses. Our intention is that no full-time student will change campus more than once during a course of typical duration.

Format

The Digital Marketing masters degree course uses a combination of teaching methods and sources of expertise. Tutorials and blended-learning materials introduce theories, digital marketing knowledge and skills which are further explored through a series of practitioner-led workshops. All modules develop both the theoretical and the practical and are assessed in part through live projects in collaboration with related businesses, allowing you to develop your portfolio and build linkages and contacts within industry. Full-time Study

In full-time mode, you will learn through a combination of online exercises, digital marketing workshops, presentations and lab tutorials. Delivered by the Cranfield Forensic Institute this course focuses on providing the knowledge and skills required to conduct comprehensive forensic examinations of digital devices. Guest lectures are delivered by Digital Forensic practitioners throughout the course, with guest lecturers coming from both law enforcement and private companies.

Please note the MSc is available as a full and part-time option. The PgCert and PgDip are only available as a part-time option.

Course overview

The Digital Forensic MSc is available both full-time and part-time. Students will complete a number of taught modules each with theoretical and practical elements and, for the MSc, an individual research project.

Individual Project -

The individual project will involve academic research in a specific area of digital forensics. The student will produce a substantial dissertation detailing their investigation and findings. Students are pushed to produce high quality, novel research during this period, and research outcomes are often at the cutting edge of the subject.

Assessment -

The assessments on this course are a mixture of written and practical exams, oral presentations, coursework assignments and (MSc only) a thesis.

The coursework assignments vary, but will include conducting digital forensics examinations of disk images for particular scenarios, conducting research into the artefacts left by applications, and further written assignments on digital forensic processes and theory.

Facilities -

There are comprehensive facilities and resources to support study on the Forensic Computing course.

Digital Forensics Laboratories -

The majority of taught modules will be delivered in a dedicated digital forensics teaching computer laboratory regularly reconfigured for different modules, and equipped with all the necessary hardware and software. For example for the “Mac OS X Forensics” module, the PCs are removed and replaced with Apple Macs, for the “Network” module students build their own network and connect to a domain, and for the “Forensic Computing using Linux” module the standard Windows build is replaced with Linux.

There is also a separate digital forensic student laboratory available for general use by students for coursework and research. This is equipped with the latest digital forensics software including Encase 6 and 7, FTK 5, Blacklight, NetAnalysis and WinHex.

In addition a digital forensics research laboratory is used by staff and by students conducting research projects. This contains mobile phone acquisition equipment, reconfigurable networks and customisable hardware.

A network forensics research laboratory is available for research into network protocols and evidence from servers.

A “Crime Scene Room” is used during search and seizure exercises where students will learn how to identify and secure the physical evidence upon which digital evidence resides. The room is equipped with cameras so actions can be recorded and played back in order to analyse and improve strategy and behaviour. It is reconfigured to simulate a variety of crime scenarios.

Learning resources -

Lectures are delivered almost exclusively in the digital forensics teaching laboratory and these along with the practical sessions are supported using Moodle, an open source Virtual Learning Environment ensuring that notes are available electronically. Exercises and exercise data can be downloaded for later study and interactive digital exercises can be used to support the learning of complex subjects.

The Barrington Library provides resources to support the main teaching material where electronic and physical access is available to the latest digital forensics journals including Digital Investigation. Access to the latest textbooks, digital forensics magazines, and past Cranfield digital forensics theses that date back to 2002 are also accessible. Cranfield University subscribes to the latest library databases so digital forensics papers located in non-specialist journals can also be easily located during research and assignments.

Full-time and part-time students will join together during classroom (residential study school) sessions. This is an ideal opportunity for networking.

Entry Requirements

Normally a first or second class Honours degree or equivalent in science, engineering or mathematics. Alternatively, a lesser qualification together with appropriate work experience may be acceptable.

The full-time course is ideally suited to recent graduates in a related subject such as Computer Science who wish to specialise in Forensic Computing. It is also suitable for those who have recently completed a BSc in Computer Forensics, Digital Forensics, Cybercrime Forensics or a related subject, who would wish to deepen their knowledge, improve their skills and increase their employability, in what is a very competitive market.

The part-time course is more suited to those already in full-time employment, such as law enforcement officers, government staff, security consultants, accountancy and banking organisations, corporate security personnel and members of associated agencies in both the UK and overseas. This programme could lead to a new career or promotion with an existing employer. Your qualification will be a Master of Education in Educational Leadership and Policy

This specialisation focuses on leadership practices and policy development within educational contexts. It is suited to those who are interested in leading educational initiatives and institutions and extending their knowledge of how to lead, manage and administer capable educational organisations.

You will explore the concept and characteristics of a capable organisation, and evaluate factors that contribute to maintaining and sustaining capable organisations including human intellect, knowledge, values, emotion, learning and organisational culture and climate.

As a result you will acquire a suite of effective leadership strategies for capability building and develop your understanding of how organisations build organisational resilience when confronted with change.

Importantly, you will add to this the capacity to assess organisational capability and develop capacity in particular contexts. Using empirical research you will evaluate the decision making process that occurs within organisations and the aspects that influence it. You will design strategies to improve problem solving and decision making processes and outcomes and enhance organisational capabilities.

Expert teaching practice

How and what we teach and the way students learn lies at the heart of education. As such, expert teachers and expert teaching are critical ingredients in both formal and informal education. Whether your setting is schools, tertiary education, workplaces or community organisations and groups, this specialisation is designed to extend your interest and deepen your knowledge and practice of teaching and learning in various learning areas and contexts of your choice.

You will address the complexity and the artistry of teaching – advancing your understanding of how learning can be both stimulated and supported – in various learning areas and contexts of your choice.

General education studies

Your qualification will be a Master of Education

Monash understands that professionals are themselves often in the best position to decide the particular knowledge they need to acquire. This specialisation offers the opportunity to select your two specialist units from across the other specialisations.

You can tailor your unit choices to suit your own interests or needs while maintaining a strong focus on leadership. A museum director, for example, may choose a blend of organisational learning and science curriculum and pedagogy in anticipation of leading the museum's science outreach. A current or aspiring principal, planning work in a rural community, may find a Community learning unit an excellent substitute to one suggested for principals.

Inclusive and special education

Your qualification will be a Master of Education in Inclusive and Special Education

Do you want to develop effective strategies to promote inclusion of learners with diverse needs in a range of learning contexts? If so, this specialisation is for you.

It focuses on building inclusive learning environments. You will study theories of, and approaches to, inclusion of diverse learners with particular cultural, social, cognitive and emotional needs across learning contexts. In doing so, you will discover ways in which education can be transformed to include all learners regardless of their age, sexuality, gender, class, ethnicity and disability.

What you will study

This course focuses on strategic entrepreneurial marketing and the development of new business models and value propositions based on in-depth insights of both customer and industry/market sector analysis.

It has a clear emphasis on the strategic utilisation of digital marketing theory, strategy, tools and tactics as well as analysis and evaluation of key analytics and metrics in meeting organisational key performance indicators.

You’ll study 180 credits on the course. These credits are made up of the following modules:

- Digital Marketing Management (September – December)
On this module you will learn key aspects of strategic digital marketing planning as well as the changing nature of customer markets and strategic business models. You will be expected to set strategic digital marketing objectives to meet strategic business aims.

- Strategic Entrepreneurial Marketing (September – December)
Gain an understanding of key constructs associated with Strategic Entrepreneurial Marketing, Strategic Entrepreneurial Marketing interfaces with business strategy; and the differentiation between Strategic Entrepreneurial Marketing, and normative marketing planning and management.

- Content Marketing and PR (January to March)
You will be provided with a solid foundation for writing and factual story-telling as well as verbal communication within a marketing and PR context.

- Digital Tools, Technologies and Metrics (January to March)
You will learn about how digital tools and technologies can be used to engage and influence customer conversations and interactions as well as customer retention. You’ll also understand and critique best practice and relevant tools and technologies, application, remuneration and controls to deliver results and find out about how digital tools and technologies interface with business activities to meet strategic aims and objectives.

- Campaign Planning for Marketing and PR (April – May)
On this module you will learn about key constructs associated with Campaign Planning for Marketing and PR; and how strategic digital Campaign Planning for Marketing and PR interfaces with overall organisation strategies and actions.

- Research Methods
Develop your understanding and skills of research in a management and/or professional development context whilst undertaking a critical review of research methodologies and methods.

- Dissertation
A significant piece of research into an appropriate area of study.

Learning and teaching methods

The course is delivered full-time daily and is term-based. Part time students, depending on prior qualifications and experience will be counselled on the flexible options available to them.

You will study through a series of lectures, workshops and internship/work-based learning. The course team work closely with digital marketing professionals who co-deliver elements of the course.

Teaching staff come from a range of academic and practitioner backgrounds. Their expertise comes from a wide range of private and public practice areas as well as academic and research-focussed subjects.

Alumni form an important part of delivery through communicating experiences and inspiring our students. Through social media, we have captured graduates who have studied the course and related modules. It is hoped that this group will facilitate networking and information sharing. A LinkedIn course area has been developed to ensure prospective and current students and alumni can engage and build their professional network.

Work Experience and Employment Prospects

The MSc Strategic Digital Marketing draws students from a range of backgrounds who share the common goal of wanting to develop as strategic digital marketers. Graduates should greatly enhance their career prospects across a variety of industries in both private and public sectors but may also choose to start up their own business in this growth area. Career options include Social Media Lead, Digital Marketing Manager, Digital Strategy Manager, Marketing Manager, Digital Communications Manager or E-Marketing Manager.

Throughout the course guest speakers representing employers from public, private and third sector industries and organisations provide students with career advice. These sessions will provide you with a broad overview of the different opportunities available to you.

Assessment methods

The one-year course has been designed in line with the requirements of the Chartered Institute of Marketing and the Institute of Direct and Digital Marketing and its content reflects the very latest developments in the field, including location-based marketing, user experience, customer journey mapping and mobile marketing.

It focuses on the knowledge and skills you’ll need to be successful in modern marketing and you’ll build a portfolio of materials to present to future employers including created web content, video content, profile infographics, customer journey maps, campaign proposals and analytics.

The course offers the chance to complete a Masters consultancy project in place of a dissertation, and we’ll discuss that option with you towards the end of your first semester. You’ll learn through a mix of lectures, seminars and workshops combining theory with case studies and examples. Guest lectures from visiting professionals will support your learning and industry practitioners will set live project briefs and offer personal feedback.

Given the ever-changing nature of the digital marketing field, you will be encouraged to innovate and apply emerging technologies to solve business problems.

You’ll be supported extensively with your personal and professional development, particularly around reflection, self-awareness and group skills and be offered the chance to take part in a residential weekend to build on these. You’ll also get the chance to develop leadership and management skills in both theoretical and real-life settings.

During the second year you’ll spend a whole semester studying in another country. We organise exchanges with universities in Europe, Asia and the Americas, allowing you to take your international experience to another level. You’ll deepen your understanding of relevant topics and there may also be studies related to the language and culture of the host region. On your return you’ll complete your dissertation or consultancy project.

The main assessment method will be via individual assignments and business reports where you’ll be expected to take a deep and critical approach and demonstrate your ability to think widely about the issues presented.

You’ll also be required to submit a 15,000 word, subject-specific dissertation where you’ll explore a digital theme in depth, applying research skills and methodologies that will be covered as part of your dissertation preparation.

You will have the option to undertake a Masters’ consultancy project as an alternative to the dissertation, which will be discussed during the course.

The graduate program in Digital Futures responds to the increasingly important and sophisticated role of digital technology as a catalyst for change.

Digital Futures has an international student cohort and faculty. The program features collaborative overseas eGlobal courses with world-wide educational and industry partners. A global perspective is key to securing our graduates’ futures in the eclectic international creative digital industries, encompassing design, arts, creative services, entertainment, media and cultural industries. The Digital Futures program is offered in partnership with the Canadian Film Centre (CFC) Media Lab.

The Digital Futures student-centred learning approach applies to both research and practice. The curriculum ensures that you gain core digital knowledge and skills as you explore your specific areas of interest through electives, industry internships, residencies and independent study.

The program focuses on practice-based learning and prototyping, with an enterprise component and supporting thesis research. Industry partnerships help students to build a career runway in advance of graduating. You are encouraged to work with industry partners in internships which lead to mentorship for your thesis research.

THE MASTER’S DEGREE IN DIGITAL FUTURES

The master's in Digital Futures is a two-year full-time program. In the program, you will develop practice-based and scholarly research in technologically advanced design, art and media through the following:

Computing and emerging digital methodologies

This is a full-time, 8-credit program comprising:

Foundational courses in computation, business creation, innovation and leadership
Core courses in digital methods, research, theory and practice
Intensive digital project and prototyping courses

Summer internship and/or study abroad
Elective choices
Creative digital thesis project and supporting paper (MFA/MDes) or a written thesis and supporting creative project (MA)

Students declare their intention to pursue the Master of Design (MDes), Master of Fine Arts (MFA) or Master of Arts (MA) at the time of application. The outcomes of the chosen degree are distinctive. The MDes and MFA focus on practice-based research creation with a supporting thesis. The MA flips that focus, with an emphasis on a scholarly research thesis and a supporting creative project.
