The MA in Learning and Technology responds to the demand for qualified professionals in the field of technology-mediated learning and education and the need for management level individuals who have the knowledge, skills and ability to assume the leadership roles that are required to plan, design, develop, implement and evaluate contemporary learning environments.

Being founded on principles of networked learning; open pedagogy and digital mindset means that students create and build on their digital presence in order to collaborate and contribute meaningfully to digital learning networks and communities in the field throughout their program. The virtual symposium at the beginning and end of the program is one of the many opportunities for students to engage in, cultivate and contribute back to these digital learning networks and communities as they learn more about facilitating in contemporary learning environments.

The program has three exit pathways; a thesis; secondary research paper or digital learning-consulting project. Graduates of the program work in the creation and evaluation of contemporary digital learning environments. They use their theoretical and practical knowledge to critically analyze learning innovations and assess their impact on organizations and society. The cross-sectoral skill set cultivated in the program enables graduates to lead and support their organizations to continually improve the learning experiences they offer.

Professional Certification

The MA in Learning and Technology program is recognized by the Institute of Performance and Learning. Graduates of the program receive credit towards the work experience requirements of the Certified Training and Development Professional (CTDP) certification. The School of Education and Technology works with a program learning outcomes framework that informs the course learning outcomes. Delivery Model

Proximity to the RRU campus doesn’t have to be an issue. You can choose to do your program completely online or you can include a 2-week on-campus residency in your program. The majority of this program is experienced through online learning as both the fully online and blended programs come together in the third online course and continue online for the duration of the program. Using a combination of Web 2.0/3.0 technologies for learning, you will engage, collaborate, share, create and contribute to the learning experience from anywhere in the world. The courses are designed for flexibility of access while at the same time achieving a balance between individual work and teamwork. Regular contribution in the form of blog posts, discussions or other course activities is required.

Completion Options
The first six foundational courses are common to all students in the program. Then there are the following options for program completion.

Thesis Track
Students apply to the thesis track in their first year of the program. If the application is not successful they have the option of completing the program following the Research Paper or Digital Learning Consulting Project tracks. Students who are admitted to the 12-credit thesis track will identify a research area of focus and work 1:1 with a thesis supervisor on primary research. View recent student research titles.

Research Paper Track
Students taking this track will be engaged in additional course experiences including inquiry-based courses that require them to co-create their learning experience with the course instructor. They will then take an advanced research course in preparation for their 6-credit secondary research paper. Students who choose this track will engage in a deep investigation on a specific research question using secondary data. Previous secondary research papers have included meta-synthesis; critical literature reviews; policy analysis, etc.

Digital Learning Consulting Project
Students taking this track will be engaged in additional course experiences including inquiry-based courses that require them to co-create their learning experience with the course instructor. They will then take an advanced research course in preparation for their 6-credit digital learning consulting project. Students who choose this track will gain hands-on practical experience that will help them apply their theoretical knowledge in a real-world setting on tightly scoped project and provide the research informed justification and rationale for the design decisions made. Projects are sourced from a variety of program-industry stakeholder groups. Student proposed projects may also be considered.

Since most of the games are created in cooperation, all people with different backgrounds can find a role in the game design and development team. Everybody who is interested in making games and learning game design is welcome to join. It is easier to find a role in the game design team if you have the following background:

Aimed at people currently using digital technology in education, the programme focuses on theoretical, professional and practical applications of digital technology. You’ll have the chance to explore microworlds and constructivism, collaborative learning, tutoring systems and more. You’ll also analyse research and development in the field of technology-enhanced learning.

While you study, you’ll gain practical experience of e-learning through using our Virtual Learning Environment (VLE), where you’ll meet and discuss your research with people working around the world.

Please be aware that this is not an IT skills training course. We will expect you to have basic IT skills such as word processing, email and using the internet before you start the programme.

This programme is also available to study as a full-time, Leeds-based programme over 12 months.

Course content

From the beginning of the programme you’ll take core modules that lay the foundations of your studies. In your first year you’ll consider the relationships between learning theories and digital technologies and how software applications can be used for modelling, role play, tutoring systems and other purposes. You’ll expand on this in Year Two as you think about key issues and debates in digital learning and digital technology as a whole, both in the classroom and in society as a whole.

You’ll also develop specialist knowledge when you select from optional modules in each year – you could focus on digital learning environments, language learning through technology and more. If you’re able to attend classes in Leeds, you could even choose one optional module from across the School of Education on topics from educational research to developmental disorders.

Throughout your final year, you’ll also work on your critical study – a major piece of independent research which allows you to demonstrate the knowledge and skills you’ve gained. You’ll work closely with your academic supervisor, who will guide you through your research.

The course is delivered with a mixture of lectures and seminars. Many of the assessments will be based on real world cases and therefore specialist guest speakers and visits to businesses will also form part of the learning journey. At Master's level, self-management and independent research and study is expected with students being directed and encouraged to deepen their understanding of particular areas of Marketing. Moodle is used as an interactive VLE but the development of a learning community is particularly prevalent at Cardiff Metropolitan with excellent student support.

Assessment

The Master of Science in Digital Humanities helps graduates from Humanities, Social and Behavioral Sciences programmes to develop digital competencies that will allow them to add digital dimensions to their own domain expertise. It aims to explicitly link these competencies to research questions, case studies and applications related to the domain expertise of the students.

Graduates of this programme will be able to bring their own domain expertise to a significantly higher level of functionality, using digital tools and techniques. Building both on the expertise they obtained from the programme and their prior expertise in Humanities, Social or Behavioral Sciences, graduates will be well placed to open many new digital applications to a much wider community. Structure

The programme is organized around a number of clusters of course units. International and multidisciplinary

The Master’s Programme is conceived as a one year, international and multidisciplinary advanced master programme (master-after-master). Objectives

Digitization affects in many ways how future scientists in Humanities and Behavioural Sciences will conduct their research. Also, graduates from Humanities and Behavioural Sciences programs enter a professional world in which digitization becomes the standard, be it in publishing, arts, libraries, teaching and many others.

The Master of Science in Digital Humanities program aims to prepare graduates from Humanities and Behavioural Sciences programs for these challenges. It aims to help such graduates to develop digital competencies that will allow them to add digital dimensions to their own domain expertise. It aims to explicitly link this knowledge and these competencies to case studies and applications related to the domain expertise of the students. As an advanced master program (master-after master), it is assumed that the students entering this program have already achieved the general academic competencies defined for any master's program. Nevertheless, it is also within the aims of the program to further strengthen these competencies, within the specific context that Digital Humanities offers.

More specifically, graduates understand the basics of Digital Humanities, databases and query languages, scripting languages, the role of IT in management and of some of the emerging technologies in Digital Humanities. They are able to formulate research goals, determine trajectories that achieve these goals, collect and select information relevant to achieve the research goals and interpret collected information on the basis of a critical research attitude. They are able to communicate scientifically. They are able to model a database and use SQL, to use a scripting language, to apply tools for Digital Humanities and to study applications in Digital Humanities. They have the attitudes of valuing and fostering creative, critical and independent thinking, of applying an interdisciplinary and participative approach in innovative development and of striving towards opening the digital world to a broader society.

Academically, researchers in the Humanities, Social or Behavioral Science are confronted with the need to apply digital tools to facilitate and enhance their research. The program enables graduates to enhance their research in the Humanities, Social or Behavioral Sciences through non-trivial uses of digital tools and techniques. This may include modeling and querying databases, accessing data, interconnecting andquerying web resources, extending tools with scripts to provide extra functionality, text-encoding and e-publishing, mining repositories, data visualization, analyzing social networks, adopting, adapting and enhancing e-learning environments, improvingusability of human-computer interaction. As such, graduates are very well placed to take on the challenges that novel research positions require.

Professionally, graduates of the Humanities, Social of Behavioral Sciences enter professional environments where connecting the company’s business with digital tools and techniques has become standard. The WBL courses will be delivered using a ‘blended’ approach, which consists of a mixture of distance learning (supported by materials available online), and some campus-based taught sessions. Campus-based taught sessions will only be used when necessary, and will usually be delivered at the Genners Lane Campus, at the weekend. 

In respect of student workload, it should be noted that 30 credit modules require 300 hours of study and a 60 credit module requires 600 hours of study.

Part-time students have a maximum period of study of 5 years to complete a full Master’s degree. However, students will normally complete a full Master’s degree on a part-time basis, over 2-3 years.

For students submitting an RPL/RPEL claim up to the maximum of 90 credits, a full Master’s degree could be completed in 12 months.

Assessment

Students will experience a range of work-based assessment formats including: written reports and essays, digital resource creation, project report and case study, e-portfolio, presentations, work-based research. You’ll study

You can take any three classes in lifelong learning to complete the Postgraduate Certificate.
To achieve the award of the Postgraduate Diploma you must take six classes in lifelong learning, or five classes in lifelong learning and one optional class from the wider MEd programme.
If you want to proceed to the MEd you can choose to focus your thesis on lifelong learning and/or technology enhanced learning topics.

Teaching staff

The course is delivered by a team of experts from the School of Education and the Centre for Lifelong Learning. Both have teaching and research experience in the areas of lifelong learning and technology enhanced learning.

Pre-Masters preparation course

The Pre-Masters Programme is a preparation course for international students (non EU/UK) who do not meet the entry requirements for a Masters degree at University of Strathclyde. The Pre-Masters programme provides progression to a number of degree options.

Learning & teaching

The course is offered on a part-time basis and offers different modes of delivery from traditional face-to-face seminars to online, round table discussions. The course aims to promote interactive learning and harness the latest web technologies so that you're able to put your theoretical knowledge to practice.

- Guest lectures
There'll be guest online lectures by academics from other institutions and practitioners whose work focuses on the topics explored in class, for example digital citizenship and online identity.

Assessment

Coursework assignments include a wide range of activities such as:
- essays
- reflective portfolio
- presentations
- visual essays
- photostories

Careers

The programme is aimed at teachers, professional educators, policy-makers and administrators working across the education, business, community and voluntary sectors.

It's also suitable for those aspiring to enter these fields or who are interested in lifelong learning in general.
