This is a truly international course, attracting students from all over the world with a diverse range of cultures and identities. It will provide you with a strong theoretical and technical underpinning for the principal areas of study thanks to lecture series on filmmaking techniques, green screen, MOCAP, computer graphic principles, the fusion of art and technology, personal research, and applied digital effects theory and practice.

We accept students from a broad range of art-based subject areas including fine art, photography, architecture, filmmaking, fashion design, and graphic design. We will also consider applications from non-art based subjects such as computer sciences or engineering, as long as good art skills can be demonstrated. Knowledge of digital effects and computer graphics are not a pre-requisite for entry, as everything is rapidly taught from basics. A strong set of traditional art and photography skills are however highly beneficial, and demonstration of all art-based skills should be done at application stage in the form of a digital portfolio.

MA Digital Effects and the National Centre for Computer Animation is the UK’s only officially recognised Houdini Certified School. This incredible software is now at the forefront of the VFX Industry, and knowledge of it is a must for anyone wanting to progress their careers in this field.

Digital Effects is one of three Master's degree pathways created by the National Centre for Computer Animation NCCA. All pathways share a great deal of core teaching, but also have specific pathway teaching. If your primary area of interest is mostly illustration or figurative character-based, then our 3D Computer Animation Programme may be a better choice for you. If your application portfolio is mostly technical or programming-based work without much in the way of original artwork, then our Computer Animation & Visual Effects Programme may be the better choice. Our assessment panels will automatically pass applications deemed better suited to another pathway onto them, so it is a good idea to familiarise yourself with all our Master's pathways to help ensure Digital Effects is the right programme for you.

Course structure

The course is designed to train digital effects artists to work in industry. Our successful former students are working in London and for international companies in areas ranging from television graphics to architectural visualisation. Although the thrust of the course is towards high end film special effects and animation, the standards and techniques you learn allow you to work in numerous other areas of digital effects.

The primary industry jobs the course is oriented towards include: technical directors in assistant, creature development, lighting effects, look development roles, compositors in compositing, digital paint and roto roles, modellers and trackers/matchmovers. For a smaller project or company roles would include that of a 3D generalist, 3D artist, effects artist or compositor. These are not easy to achieve, as global competition is fierce and success depends on much better than average concentration and constant practise to grasp the essence and modern techniques of digital visual effects.

This list is based on the current curriculum and may change year to year in response to new curriculum developments and innovation. Most programmes will require you to study a combination of compulsory and optional modules. COURSE OVERVIEW

This course commences in January each year. During this extremely practical modular course, you will spend a lot of time learning techniques “on set”, in addition to learning in front of a computer. You will work closely with students from all the other NFTS MA disciplines, creating 2D/3D VFX, CG 3D FX or Colour Grading and Onlining the entire production, on a diverse range of NFTS film and television projects – many of which go on to become international award-winners.

This course shares a common first year, allowing you to specialise in the second year in one of three areas:

COLOUR: For those who aspire to be:
-Digital Film Colourists (Baselight/Nucoda/Scratch)
-Online Editors (AVID|DS/Symphony/Smoke)

COMPOSITING: For those who aspire to be:
-VFX Artists/ 2D/3D Compositors (Nuke/Flame/Adobe CS6)

CG: For those who aspire to be:
-CG 3D Artists
-CG TDs (Maya modelling/lighting/texturing/rendering)

Ultimately the course will provide the backbone for a career in 2D VFX or 3D VFX or Colour Grading/Online editing.

The NFTS holds a unique position within the film and television industries, whereby it can offer an invaluable “Bridge to Industry” that attempts to help graduates establish themselves in a new career. At the time of writing, all the previous Digital FX graduates are in employment from Soho to São Paulo. Here are the units you will study:

Professional, Academic and Research Development: This is a taught unit covering planning and managing development projects.

Graphics Applications and Creative Technologies: explore the production of three-dimensional graphics and their relevance to digital media applications, such as animation, interactive applications and the post-production stages of generating media composites and digital effects. The unit develops the technical, creative and cognitive skills required to create three-dimensional assets, such as modelling, texturing and animation, and demonstrate proficiency and professionalism in their construction.

Masters Application of Creative Technologies: This project unit offers you the opportunity to apply the taught material from the earlier stages of the course in the solution of a client led practical, creative, or research problem directly related to Digital Media. You will study a range of modules including computer graphics and visual effects, and computer vision.

You’ll explore different approaches for creating visual effects and the relationship between the segmentation, classification and identification of images and video.

You’ll learn about modern visual effects tools, programming techniques and physics-based animation, and have the opportunity to apply them and to adapt algorithms to typical problems in an advanced visual effects R&D environment.

This course is for you if you’ve gained mathematics or computer science skills in your first degree and are interested in the technology behind computer games and other digital entertainment.

The course will give you the opportunity to undertake research in our leading centres, including the highly regarded Centre for Digital Entertainment. Our facilities also include the £5 million Centre for the Analysis of Motion, Entertainment Research and Applications (CAMERA).

The Intelligent Interactions group has interests in all aspects of information engineering and human-machine interactions. It was formed in 2014 by the merger of the Image and Information Research Group and the Digital Media Research Group.

What you will study

3D design at postgraduate level includes 3D modelling, animation, video and motion graphics. Modules are designed to meet current industrial needs, technology and practice.

The programme offers four specialist pathways; Virtual Environments; Architecture; Computer Games and Visual Effects.

There are six taught modules, each module is taught over a twelve week period. Each week consists offormal lectures, lab work, tutorials and private study. On satisfactory completion of the modules,you proceed to a major project and submit a final dissertation for examination. This is completed overa three month period following the taught modules.

Digital Media Technology and Development

An introduction to digital media hardware and software tools, and methods of production and organisation. The student will learn 3D visualisation and animation techniques using the latest 3D software applications.

Digital Video and Motion Graphics

Develop skills and practical knowledge of digital video/film productiontechniques and the association of digital motion graphics media production.Application of creative technique will cover elective areas such as short filmproduction, documentary production, 3D animation composition, titlesequence generation and abstract motion graphics effects.

Digital Media Publishing and Commercialisation

Progress the work of the Digital Media Technology and Development module of Trimester A. The intention is to provide a full understanding of the subject material relevant to the development of a broadcast level digital media project.

Digital Portfolio and Industrial Production Techniques

This module will provide practical knowledge of digital media publishing techniques suitable for the production of portfolio media. Students will investigateand demonstrate knowledge of a range of digital media tools and techniques for the promotion of skills within a portfoliopresentation. Critical analysis of various types of digital media delivery platforms,copyright issues, and digital marketingstrategies will be covered. This modulewill also provide an overview of how 3Dmodelling and animation fits within the context of the particular industry sectorwhich is relevant to the students areaof specialisation.

Research and Project Methods

This module aims to provide students with the background knowledge and skills that, in combination with the technical skills acquired in other taught modules, will enable them to carry an MSc dissertation through to a successful conclusion. Students will study all aspects of the processes underlying both capstone projects and research projects, and will relate these to available tools, ethical considerations and professional issues.

MSc Project

The Project acts as a vehicle for extendingthe knowledge and understanding of thestudent and the technical community insome specialist technical area. It serves,through its length, complexity andrigour, as a suitable vehicle for extending,in the student, a range of personal,interpersonal and communication skills.In addition, it serves to develop andextend a range of high-level thinkingskills, including analysing and synthesisingskills and affords the opportunity for thestudent to demonstrate initiative andcreativity in a major piece of technologicalwork. The student has the option of awritten dissertation or a dissertationby film.

On this Digital Culture & Society MA programme you will focus on how technology and culture are connected in today’s society. We broadly interpret this to include such areas of activity as performing arts, telecommunications, information technology, philosophy, law and education. We aim to develop and enhance your awareness and understanding of a range of subjects relevant to digital culture and technology, including:

  • The key information and communication technologies that shape contemporary society.
  • The key developments in contemporary cultural expression, specifically how these are driven, mediated or influenced by digital technologies.
  • The role of digital technologies in the study of culture and cultural artefacts from the past.
  • How digital technologies are shaping today’s society, including social intercourse, social structures, government, international politics, education and law.
  • The current critical and theoretical debates around digital culture and the role of technology in cultural life.
  • The ethical, moral and philosophical issues that arise from the role and impact of technology in cultural and social life.

Course purpose

The aim of the MA Digital Culture & Society programme is to develop participants’ understanding of the role and consequences of digital technologies in contemporary culture, broadly interpreted to include such areas of activity as performing arts, telecommunications, information technology, philosophy, law and education. The programme is conceived as fundamentally interdisciplinary, drawing for its teaching on four academic Schools: Arts and Humanities; Law; Physical Sciences and Engineering; and Social Science & Public Policy. It is aimed at a diverse range of participants, offering technological insights to those with non-technical backgrounds, and cultural perspectives to those who have not thought about digital culture in a systematic way.

Course format and assessment

Teaching Style

If you are a full-time student, we will provide 120 to 180 hours of teaching through lectures and seminars, and we will expect you to undertake 1674 hours of independent study.

If you are a part-time student, we will provide 90 hours of teaching through lectures and seminars in your first year, and 50 hours in your second. We will expect you to undertake 720 hours of independent study in your first year and 954 hours in your second.

Assessment

We will assess our modules entirely through coursework, which will mostly take the form of essays, with some project work.

The School of Engineering and Digital Arts successfully combines modern engineering and technology with the exciting field of digital media. The School, which was established over 40 years ago, has developed a top-quality teaching and research base, receiving excellent ratings in both research and teaching assessments.

The School undertakes high-quality research that has had significant national and international impact, and our spread of expertise allows us to respond rapidly to new developments. Our 30 academic staff and over 130 postgraduate students and research staff provide an ideal focus to effectively support a high level of research activity. We have a thriving student population studying for postgraduate degrees in a friendly, supportive teaching and research environment.

We have research funding from the Research Councils UK, European research programmes, a number of industrial and commercial companies and government agencies including the Ministry of Defence. Our Electronic Systems Design Centre and Digital Media Hub provide training and consultancy for a wide range of companies. Course structure

This intensively taught postgraduate course lasts a full year. It takes place in a dedicated computer laboratory where you have your own seat and computer for the duration of the course. The course lectures and workshops, whether led by visiting professionals or staff, are all held in this room. Demonstrations and showing of films are by means of an HD projector. By the end of the year, the lab will be where you live as much as your accommodation.
