As these technologies continue to develop in terms of speed, availability and functionality, even greater opportunities will arise for those individuals who are able to combine traditional marketing insight with a true understanding of digital media, capturing these benefits and articulating them at both an academic and vocational level.

This course offers a unique opportunity for students to gain understanding and use of digital media design and technologies for the purpose of branding. This programme aims to fill a gap by developing the knowledge and practical experience of both digital design and branding concepts.

Modules:

Digital Branding Strategy
The main aim of this module is provide students with understanding and skills to (i) develop a strategic approach to branding and its relationship to digital design and organisational performance, (ii) to evaluate the current state of the relationship of branding to digital design, digital promotion and management and (iii) to build future scenarios in response to new trends.

Multimedia Research Directions
The module will introduce concepts of different types of research, present methods to identify research topic and formulate approach, prepare plan for research and provide guidance on performing research experiments and evaluating novel systems and artefacts. In this module internationally renowned researchers and practitioners in creative media design will be invited to speak in seminars to the MSc students.

Digital Promotion
In this module students will study digital promotion media and means, with the focus on creative execution: Social Media Marketing, Online Advertising, Public Relations, E-mail marketing, etc; case study of successful digital campaigns and businesses.

Digital Design
The aim of this module is to provide theoretical and practical skills of digital design in the context of creative digital branding; graphic design, layout, typography, etc; the module to include a practical design project.

Digital Media Technologies
This module offers understanding and appreciation of the various digital media technologies in the context of creative digital branding.

Advanced 3D Technologies
The aim of this module to cover advanced 3D and associated technologies including, generative 3D modelling, real-time graphics, animation and human movement and machine acquisition techniques. Complex forms will be visualized, simulated and tested on screen. The module will also explore the latest developments in rapid prototyping virtual reality and other forms of visualization.

Multimedia and Interaction Design
The aim of this module is to demonstrate advanced knowledge and understanding of state-of-the-art technologies revolving around the various interactive possibilities with digital media in the academic and commercial worlds. To demonstrate theoretical and practical knowledge of graphic design, photography and video within the context of interactive digital media.

Audio Visual Post Production
This module will develop the students’ knowledge, skills and understanding of post-production and compositing to a professional level, with a particular focus on visual post production, but supported by a study of relevant audio post production techniques and principles.

Masters Project - Digital Campaign
Develop a digital campaign for a chosen brand, product or service. The focus of work to be on the development of a digital promotional artefact (e.g. a collection of viral videos, a viral game), but the project to involve the full cycle of a campaign management: market research (product and user), budget development, media planning and distribution, evaluation of campaign effectiveness.

The aim of the Web and Digital Design program is to develop professionals within the industry who are able to plan, produce, and share knowledge in an effective way.

The program offers an experimental pathway at the forefront of design, marketing, and technology. Students blend sound design competence with strategic vision, knowledge of technical aspects and project management skills in order to coordinate all the different stages in the development process.

The program incorporates art direction and design, content, solid technical skills and an in-depth background in digital marketing and communication.

The curriculum is a balance between theoretical teaching and practical tasks. Project-based activities in particular are central to the learning experience and leverage abilities and information acquired in the other courses.

Projects follow a professional workflow, which encompasses the definition of the digital strategy, the interaction model and users' journey, the design of the interface and its look and feel, the creation of a prototype using front/back end programming tools.

As the user experience is increasingly developing through social media, companies are changing their business accordingly. This new and thrilling scenario is deeply investigated with specific regard to the integration of content and navigation flow between websites, search, and social platforms. The overall didactic experience provides the students with professional abilities, allowing them to engage in dialogue with the different figures involved in digital media projects.

The course lasts 15 months (from October until December) and is entirely taught in English language.

QUALIFICATION

After passing the final exam, eligible students will obtain a Master’s Degree from IULM and SPD. The Master corresponds to 60 ECTS credits.

Founded in Milan in 1954, SPD Scuola Politecnica di Design is the first postgraduate school for design disciplines in Italy. Situated in Milan, the capital of design, Scuola Politecnica di Design pioneered design education thanks to its solid grounding and to its peculiar approach integrating different domains: ergonomics, art, perception studies, semiotics.

Today, SPD is an international laboratory for the exchange of ideas, experience and creativity in order to develop projects. Since its foundation the school has welcomed an extraordinary community of students from various countries and backgrounds.

Moving to one campus

Between 2016 and 2020 we're investing £125 million in the London Metropolitan University campus, moving all of our activity to our current Holloway campus in Islington, north London. This will mean the teaching location of some courses will change over time.

Whether you will be affected will depend on the duration of your course, when you start and your mode of study. The earliest moves affecting new students will be in September 2017. This may mean you begin your course at one location, but over the duration of the course you are relocated to one of our other campuses. Our intention is that no full-time student will change campus more than once during a course of typical duration.

On this course, you will learn how to create rich and meaningful stories with data. We will study digital content in any mode, whether it is in alphanumeric form, binary, vector, pixel, video, or others. The designer provides an important interface, that allows us to explore data and generates meaningful communication. This communication is predominantly visual, but with developments in Wearables and the Internet of Things, is also becoming increasingly physical, affective, networked and interactive. Data Visualisation Design spans traditional graphic and information design, interaction design, information architecture, computational design, design thinking and user-centred and user experience design.

The course is offered over one year (full-time) or two years (part-time).

You will study five units, one of which is shared with other MA courses in the School of Art and Design. There will be preparatory units delivering a grounding in practical skills, theoretical context and academic research (competencies and skills). You will also study units that allow more thematic engagement with interactive and data driven design in terms of theory such as critical design, affordances, experience and complexity. It will also provide a unit oriented towards employability, and incorporate live briefs and group work. These units work to catalyse your own ideas and research direction for the Major Project unit.

Programme Details

The teaching combines interactive lectures and group seminar discussions with support through one-to-one tutorials. You also receive feedback on your work through friendly but critical peer review in group sessions with other students, members of faculty and other experts as appropriate. One of the units includes working as a team. Your project work emphasises self-initiated learning which gives you the freedom to explore the specialist area of your interest, while being helpfully guided by your supervisor. The curriculum is very closely related to the research areas in the department, so the staff have cutting edge knowledge of the field and its potential for innovation.

Your learning is mostly assessed through the submission of practical course work, such as digital prototypes, and the documentation of the learning journey in sketchbooks, diaries, blogs or journals.

This will be documenting contextual research as well as stages in practical experimentation and annotation of reflection. There are some written elements to be submitted as well, mostly accompanying proposals/reports to contextualise your practice. The assessment also includes individual and group presentations, this mode is also used to give you formative feedback on your work throughout.

What is the MA in Interaction Design about?

Interaction design focuses on shaping products for people’s use and behaviour and includes designing interactive digital products, environments, visual communication systems and services. Interaction design is the synthesis and imagining of things as they might be, rathere than focusing on satisfying the needs and desires of the end user. This programme is specifically designed for honours graduates in product and industrial design, multimedia and game design, visual communication design, architecture, engineering and other design related fields. This Masters programme has been developed by IT Carlow in consultation with industry and is delivered through combination of the self-directed learning and graduate research within the structutred environment of a taught programme. This dynamic educational environment seeks to provide a framework for interdisciplinary and peer learning and equiry, which facilitates, promotes and leads the interaction between practice and theory. The Master of Design programme provide the opportunity for you to develop creative thinking and innovative strategies through an advanced understanding of the practical application of design thinking and design strategy that can be applied in a global context.

Service Design is a relatively new discipline that has emerged in the UK simultaneously with an increase in the service sector of the economy and the development of services which require innovative approaches to design, development and delivery in public, private and civil society organisations. Through the use of a specific set of methods and processes based on design thinking, Service Design aims to develop services that are useful and desirable for customers/stakeholders and profitable and efficient for the provider.

The course will provide you with the opportunity to develop and use design thinking as a device for modelling multi-faceted service experiences. In particular this requires the ability to design user research, to facilitate development workshops, and to project manage a process when initially outcomes are unknown. A detailed understanding of the management of design and innovation in service organisations is gained through case studies and project based learning. You are introduced to a range of concepts in Service Design such as co-design, user-driven innovation and social innovation. You are also encouraged to develop your own approaches and to respond to emerging industry practices.

You will benefit from staff research interests in methodology and in user experience design strategies. You may also have the opportunity to participate in one of Ravensbourne’s regular industry development projects with a strong service design dimension.

Stage One: developing a knowledge base and new reference points - introduces the learner to a range of theories and practices in the strategic use of design and innovation, with a particular focus on the method of design thinking in the global context and how it relates to Service Design. Systems Project Management

This module examines the challenges in information systems project management. ICTs and Strategic Change

The aim of this module is to develop a critical awareness of the central issues and challenges in introducing information and communication technologies (ICTs) as part of a programme of strategic change in contemporary organisations.

Data Visualisation

The aim of the module is to develop the reflective and practical understanding necessary to visually present insight drawn from large heterogeneous data sets (eg to decision-makers). Content will provide an understanding of human visual perception, data visualisation methods and techniques, dashboard and infographic design, augmented reality. An emphasis is also placed on visual storytelling and narrative development.

Digital Design Methodologies

The aim of this module is to develop an in-depth understanding of digital methodologies and approaches to allow you to select the most appropriate method for any given project or challenge. An emphasis is also placed on developing the core design and communication skills, and professional practices needed to work effectively in modern multidisciplinary digital teams. As part of this module there will be a three week work placement with a digital design company in term one.

Digital Service Applications

The aim of this module is to provide students with the opportunity to apply the methods and further develop skills learned on the Digital Design Methodologies module in term one within the context of a variety of real-world projects. This will allow students to develop their experience of applying the appropriate techniques in real-world scenarios. This module will develop students’ understanding of the type of role they would like to pursue in the digital service design industry. As part of this module there will be a three week work placement with a digital design company in term two.

Dissertation (including Research Methods)

Your dissertation is an opportunity to showcase your project management and subject specific skills to potential employers, and also serves as valuable experience and a solid building block if you wish to pursue a PhD on completion of the MSc. This is the longest established programme of study in urban design in the UK, and consequently has a vast network of graduates across the globe.

Staff are engaged in world-leading research (69% either world leading or internationally excellent in REF 2014) which feeds directly into the teaching and studio work. A major strength of the course is its multidisciplinary, collegiate, team-based approach to project work and presentation.

Based in Oxford, we are well located for access to both this historic city, to London and other urban centres in the UK.

This course in detail

The Masters in Urban Design is offered as a linked PGCert/PGDip/MA. The aim of the PGCert and PGDip stages is to provide a framework of current knowledge and skills in urban design and masterplanning.

The PGCert stage of the course focuses on the basic concepts and theory of urban design, establishing a solid grounding in the practical realisation of design qualities in a case site situation.

The PGDip stage increases the emphasis placed on the application of more specific design skills in differing contexts, through live projects and a more in-depth examination of design history. Theory and new research are provided through a series of history and theory lectures and seminars.

The aim of the MA stage is to provide an opportunity for developing urban design research skills through individually selected topics in theoretical and practical fields of study in urban design.

The MA dissertation gives students the opportunity to explore in depth a subject related to urban design, and to integrate the various elements of the course. Past topics for the MA include local identity, transport and design, public art and urban design, urban coding, environmental design, digital cities, and eco-towns.

The course is structured around nine modules.

Teaching and learning

Teaching and learning methods reflect the wide variety of topics and techniques associated with urban design in practice.

Lectures provide the framework, essential background and knowledge base for the course, while you are encouraged to probe deeper into different topics by further reading and review.

Analysis, synthesis and application of material introduced in lectures are demonstrated through studio sessions, workshops, seminars and practical project work. Site visits and a fieldwork component are an important component.

The Design Management course provides the opportunity for you to develop an advanced understanding of the practical application of design thinking and design strategy applied within an organisational, business and global context.

In the corporate world design managers oversee the development of products and services and manage the innovation process workflow. However, they also have a significant strategic role in managing the articulation of a business strategy, product and service values, requiring continuous improvement of the customer experience and often involving the management of external specialists. Additionally, they may be engaged in broader organisational development issues.

Students studying Design Management Innovation will focus on design thinking, research methods and the development of management, leadership and change management skills. In addition to operational management they will also focus on design thinking approaches to organisational change, behavioural change and transformation programmes.

The MDes Design Management Innovation draws on current Ravensbourne research. This includes rapid prototyping (an increasingly important operational aspect of the design process); business start up; team building and team dynamics; and the more strategic area of new business model development.

You will work regularly with peers from different disciplines to develop interdisciplinary skills and develop your own approach to design leadership, management and innovation. Major emphasis is placed on developing your own specialist subject in order to create original solutions to social challenges, consumer behaviour, organisational and leadership issues. You will be encouraged to engage proactively in the wide range of activities and events and in the opportunities for cross-disciplinary learning offered at Ravensbourne. Of particular importance is industry engagement through live project briefs and work placements.

- To understand the role of design management as a business discipline balancing both leadership roles in terms of innovation, the creation of vision and future directions and management roles in terms of using specific tools, methods and techniques.

MA Interaction Design Communication is a practice-led design course that prepares students to design for an increasingly technologically informed and interdisciplinary design world with skills in the following areas: interaction design, design prototyping, physical computing, user centered design, open source digital platforms, design research, foresight and insight, experience design, communication design, speculative and critical design, interactive design and digital arts.

Content

MA Interaction Design Communication provides an opportunity for experimental practice in an area of design that increasingly explores the intersection of the physical and digital domains. With a focus on synthesising thought through rigorous design prototyping (making), digital processes and user perspectives, the course is highly reflective of interdisciplinary practice within the contemporary design, media and communications industries.

The integrated approach of the course to critical thinking provides you with the opportunity to work with critical ideas in an applied design context – for example psycho-geographic practice as empirical research or engaging with other critical theories of space to generate user perspectives. This ensures that ideation processes take on both the macro as well as micro opportunities for innovation and speculation crucial to building a portfolio of highly engaged work.

As well as placing you in a position to work across the board spectrum of interaction, design and communication the course is just as interested in design questions as design answers. This means that the course also prepares you for progression to further design research at MPhil/PhD level as well as to advanced self-directed experimental practice.

LCC has an outstanding team of practitioners and published researchers and enjoys a powerful programme of visiting speakers. The course also benefits from a cross-European collaboration with design industry professionals and higher education institutions and there is an opportunity to visit at least one other centre in Europe during the course.

The Master of Science (M.Sc) in Medical Visualization is a new one-year taught postgraduate programme offered by the Digital Design Studio at The Glasgow School of Art in collaboration with the Laboratory of Human Anatomy, University of Glasgow.

The purpose of this programme is to create a unique opportunity to combine actual cadaveric dissection with 3D digital reconstruction, interaction and visualisation using state of the art virtual reality facilities. It allows a unique opportunity to examine human anatomy, and to reconstruct it in a real-time 3D environment for use in education, simulation, and training. This programme will enable students to create original medical datasets, allow a greater understanding of “normal” anatomy, regional variations, and provide a novel approach to aid multi-disciplinary fields in anatomical knowledge, understanding, training and skills transfer. With the demand from clinicians of anatomical knowledge of students increasing (as a result in changes to medical and dental curricula) this Masters programme provides an ideal opportunity for enhancement of research into human anatomy, diagnostics, simulation, and visualisation.

Students undertaking the

MSc in Medical Visualisation and Human Anatomy

programme will split their time equally between the University of Glasgow (Laboratory of Human Anatomy) and the Glasgow School of Art (Digital Design Studio). The programme is delivered as two core areas – digital technologies applied to medical visualisation (delivered by the Digital Design Studio at Stage 1) and human anatomy (delivered by the Laboratory of Human Anatomy at Stage 2). In Stage 3, students work towards a large-scale self directed final project, supported throughout by individual supervision.

Subsequent career opportunities exist within the commercial healthcare technology industry (device manufacturer, etc.), the public and private healthcare sectors, as well as in academic medical visualisation research. Career outcomes for the students with medical, biomedical, anatomy, or health professional backgrounds will be able to gain 3D visualisation skills that will enhance their portfolio of abilities; students with computer science or 3D graphics background will be involved in the design and development of healthcare related products through digital technology, e.g. diagnostic and clinical applications, creating content involving medical visualisation, simulation, cardiac pacemakers, and biomechanically related products for implantation, such as knee, hip and shoulder joint replacements.

Although just one intake per year in September, students can attend this programme on a part-time basis.

We are reaching out to students with different backgrounds – not necessarily with previous academic design qualifications, but with excellent design abilities and a desire to develop design beyond specific materials and disciplines.

For your thesis, you are expected to undertake an individual project that comprises practical design work and writing a thesis.

Based in the heart of the School of Art, MA/MFA Design: Graphic Design and Art Direction is part of an innovative design network — a community of staff and students exploring design ideas in a discursive, cross-disciplinary studio environment. Critically informed practical designers, the group works experimentally, inspired by new insights and possibilities.

While studying towards a particular qualification at MA/MFA level, students experience their subject in the broader context of contemporary design practice.

Specialist Environment

Dedicated spaces for the postgraduate community have been developed to enable the postgraduate community to flourish. These spaces, for thinking and practice, are located centrally within the School of Art, allowing easy access to an extensive range of workshops where the combination of traditional and state of the art equipment opens up a world of exciting possibilities.

Course Content

The MA Design: Graphic Design and Art Direction is made up of four units totalling 180 credits.

The programme is designed to help you acclimatise to the challenges of MA level research and practice, enabling you to identify and describe a clear direction for your postgraduate design study.

You will be encouraged to develop design propositions that encompass key design issues and have complexity and ambition, taking full consideration of the relative contextual drivers.

You will also be encouraged and supported to extend your experience in the professional sphere either through a practical project, research context, exchange, work experience, or other negotiated professional set of interactions with an external partner, groups of students and creative industry.

Towards the end of the programme you will undertake a major project to consolidate your past research and practice into fully realised collections, pieces, proposals, business plans, or exhibitions – whatever means is appropriate to the work. You will also have developed a strategy for the continuation of your practice located and contextualised to the profession or discipline.

If you choose to progress to MFA Design: Graphic Design and Art Direction award you will study a further two units of 60 credits each.

This route is focused on the continuation of your practice aligned to the research and selection of appropriate public or professional venues and platforms to disseminate a significant body of work. You will be required to produce work for a public audience in the most relevant and appropriate form along with any implicit publicity and dissemination material.

Resources

We have developed a dedicated postgraduate area occupying an entire floor of the main School of Art building, offering an exciting space to be, both intellectually and practically. The centre is located in the newly refurbished Chatham Tower with studios, design laboratories, seminar rooms and extensive workshops that form the nucleus of this vibrant, cross-disciplinary learning environment.
