During your time with us, you will gain critical insights into:

The structure and content of the course will allow you to develop your skills through working on real campaigns in collaboration with relevant businesses. In addition to this there are additional opportunities to practise your digital skill by participating in the Institute of Direct and Digital Marketing (IDM) Student Marketing Competition. The competition will give you enable you to experience what it is like to work for an advertising agency by working on a campaign for a well-known industry brand with the three highest-scoring finalists will be invited to pitch their ideas to the client face to face.

Achieving all of this means our approach to teaching goes beyond merely presenting you with sets of theories and principles of marketing. Instead it extends to you being able to evaluate the usefulness of these theories and principles in practice through the use of case studies and 'live' projects. We believe this degree will give the skills and knowledge to excel at a managerial level by being equipped with the insights, education and critical understanding needed to operate in what is a dynamic and changing digital-marketing landscape.

Our MSc Digital Marketing degree is in the process of being awarded IDM accredited status - which will enable our students the opportunity to gain exemptions form the IDM Certificate in Digital Marketing.

Course Content

The programme is comprised of three distinct stages, Postgraduate Certificate (PGCert) Digital Marketing, Postgraduate Diploma (PGDIP) Digital Marketing, and MSc Digital Marketing Management, with a range of compulsory taught modules (120 credits), and a non-taught element (60 credits). The MSc will be awarded on successful completion of 180 credits.

Learning & Teaching

The course is delivered with a mixture of lectures and seminars. Many of the assessments will be based on real world cases and therefore specialist guest speakers and visits to businesses will also form part of the learning journey. At Master's level, self-management and independent research and study is expected with students being directed and encouraged to deepen their understanding of particular areas of Marketing. Moodle is used as an interactive VLE but the development of a learning community is particularly prevalent at Cardiff Metropolitan with excellent student support.

Assessment

Assessment on the programme is mixed and will include a variety of formats . You are assessed throughout the course on the basis of coursework, presentations and examinations. Assessments take the form of examinations (seen/unseen, open book, essays/short answers), essays, practical assessment, presentations, individual and group reports, and a dissertation, many of which are focused on real-life cases studies.

Year one

Advertising in a World of Converging Communication (30 credits)

This unit covers contemporary advertising practice and theory combining traditional mass media approaches with emerging social media and mobile channels. This unit develops practical skills and a critical awareness of the issues and practices within advertising in a world where increasingly the target audience can skip ads and brands combine paid, owned, earned and shared media to engage consumers. After introducing advertising principles, the unit moves on to explore the digital mix, content marketing, native advertising and immersive, augmented experiences. The traditional advertising roles of art director, copywriter, account manager and media planner are still important industry pathways but are increasingly challenged by agile practice, this unit considers the implications. Assessments are designed to test application of your learning in both theory and practice. 

Multimedia Campaign Planning (30 credits)

Students get the practical opportunity to develop and implement a number of campaign activities across a wide variety of platforms, testing their ability to integrate paid, owned, shared and earned media in a PR campaign.

Media Measurement & Evaluation (15 credits)

This unit introduces students to the challenge of measurement techniques applied in advertising, marketing, promotion and PR sectors, including the evolution of RoE (return on engagement)

Research Methods (15 credits)

This unit raises the students’ research skills to Master’s level, including SPSS and other methodologies that are relevant to their particular areas of interest (Shared Unit)

Professional Practice (30 credits)

This unit positions the MA programme in terms of the student’s career aspiration, identifying skill sets and development needs in a PDP, which forms the basis of a freelance/workplace project- and informs the student’s choice of Major Project or dissertation

Major Project/Dissertation (60 credits)

The culmination of the MA degree, where the theory and practice learned in the previous units informs the student’s principal learning outcome- a campaign that demonstrates their professional attainment or a dissertation that critically examines a crucial industry issue, generating original thinking. Both project and dissertation require primary research to a master’s level.

Placements

The Professional Practice unit requires students to undertake a work placement or complete a freelance project. The department is also currently host to the renowned philosopher of media and technology, Bernard Stiegler and students will have access to his modulein Media Philosophy as well as priority access to the innovative and popular option After New Media. Designed to complement the MA in Digital Media, this course provides a framework for thinking about the current media environment as well as future forms of human and computer interaction.

The MA in Digital Media has been redefining media theory and practice since 2004. Our students become proficient in:

  • the history, sociology and philosophy of digital media
  • the application of critical conceptual skills to specialist areas and future forms of media
  • multimedia skills in image making (photography, video, animation, graphic art) script writing, journalism and documentary 

MA Digital Media students have access to the pioneering option ‘After New Media’, currently a non-assessed online module which explores the themes of self mediation, ethical mediation and intelligent mediation, and develops a framework for thinking about 'life' after new media. As well as accessing a series of podcasts, students are offered reading groups and a masterclass with Professor Sarah Kember co-author of the book Life After New Media on which the course is based.

Course content

You’ll begin to develop your understanding of advertising principles from the start of the programme, when you’ll study consumer behaviour and explore how brands can adopt these different theories to inform their marketing strategies.

Focusing on contemporary issues, you’ll look at the process of strategic marketing communications and how strategic marketing works on the global stage. At the same time, you’ll study practical design modules where you’ll learn to visualise creative communications ideas and present your proposals to clients, as well as considering how compelling text within an advertising concept can influence consumers.

In Semester 2 you’ll build on this foundation by exploring integrated communication, developing creative concepts that can work for a range of different media outlets, as well as the broader aspects of campaign planning, print, radio and TV ad production and the ethics of advertising campaigns.

You’ll think about reach, frequency and the often complex question of return on investment and even choose from specialist modules on topics such as social media, sales promotion, brand management and direct marketing.

At the end of the programme you’ll submit a substantial project that demonstrates the knowledge and skills that you’ve gained. You can either complete a dissertation – an independent research project on a related topic of your choice – or develop a communication campaign concept of your own.

Teaching methods

As a Digital Media Arts student, you will produce a range of practical projects and gain skills in a variety of technologies and systems while at the same time developing your knowledge of current developments and practices across the digital media field. For your master’s degree project, you will specify and then produce a substantial digital media artefact which reflects your own interests and career plans. We particularly encourage experimentation and cross-disciplinary projects including those that seek to redefine the ambitions, functions and social organisations that digital media can support. During the course, some students will participate in selected undergraduate technical classes in addition to their masters study so that they can update or develop specific skills. Creative Producing for Digital Platforms Diploma teaches you the skills to build amazing experiences that audiences love, around films and television programmes online. We want to get you pitching ideas for game-changing formats that will be a hit on both TV and YouTube, creating content for new platforms from Snapchat to Facebook Live and inventing new ways to play and experience the world through VR, augmented reality and apps.

The film and television industry – along with the wider creative industries and the independent arts sector - needs people who understand what makes good digital content, how people behave online, and who have interactive, transmedia and digital production skills in order to maximise the potential of films, television programmes and creative content across new platforms. As audiences turn into users, players and creators, film and tv production and games companies need people who can maximise their presence online. This means you'll not only be involved in the production of content, you'll also be designing new forms of media, and understanding how those forms fit their market and find their audience.

Students will be taught by leading industry tutors responsible for some of the UK’s most cutting edge channels including BBC Three, All4, Nowness and Vice; and multi-platform projects like Got to Dance, The Voice, X Factor, Humans, Utopia, Misfits, Big Brother and Embarrassing Bodies.

The aim of this programme is to make you aware of the current practices relating to digital marketing. You will become aware of the latest developments in the field and you will also be equipped with the practical skills to implement them.

MA Digital Marketing includes two teaching periods and is followed by 2-3 months of independent study during which time you complete a practical project.

Teaching Period 1

Essentials of Marketing: This will provide you with a solid foundation for the advanced study of marketing. No prior knowledge of marketing is assumed but students will be expected to assimilate information rapidly and reflect upon the concepts discussed.

Contemporary Issues in Marketing: This unit will examine a number of contemporary issues related to marketing theory and practice. The unit will draw extensively on the expertise of industry experts and students will be expected to engage with the issues that marketing managers are dealing with.

Digital Marketing Strategy: The unit focuses on examining the strategies and methods used to design and manage digital media based marketing campaigns. An intrinsic part of this unit is to develop an understanding of the importance of applying a range of analytical and conceptual models to the technical and creative aspects of design of digital media marketing

Teaching Period 2

Digital Communication and Media Development: You will review the digital media development process, assess the potential of a range of applications and use software and multimedia-authoring tools to develop a digital marketing campaign.

Digital Media Marketing Development Project: The project enables you to demonstrate and showcase what you have learnt during the taught programme.

The project consists of:
Systems specification for a digital marketing campaign
Functional model/prototype developed from the above, using appropriate software tools
Critical assessment of the project in terms of design, functionality and end user interface

Programme Assessment

Teaching methods range from tutor-led presentation of material, in-class exercises to case study analysis, problem solving exercises, student presentation and in-class discussion. There will be significant use and exploration of marketing software systems and media application software.

Assessment will take the form of coursework assignments which may involve group work, presentations, case study analyses or reports and examinations which may be closed or open book. What is Digital Media

Digital Media blends many media forms and requires working in multi-skilled teams. The MDM program teaches people from different backgrounds and with different skill sets to understand each other, work together and execute a digital media project with a cohesive vision.

Do you have a passion for creative communication? Would you like to improve your employability within the advertising industry? This challenging master’s programme focuses on the development of hands-on creative advertising techniques, helping you to build a set of skills that you’ll use throughout your career. You’ll also develop a thorough understanding of relevant academic theory, exploring popular culture and the ways in which it is shaped by promotional media.

Southampton Solent University’s MA Creative Advertising curriculum focuses on industry relevant workplace skills, teaching students to function as part of a professional advertising business. These skills include idea generation, working to a brief, research, copywriting, strategy and presentation. Students will also complete a master’s project, which is an ideal opportunity to focus on the specific areas of advertising that interest them. Students benefit from creative guidance throughout the course, receiving regular feedback from the tutoring team, other students and specially invited advertising professionals. This feedback helps students to craft a portfolio of commercially appealing work, and encourages them to reflect on their own creative process.

Advertising students at Southampton Solent may get their first taste of the industry by freelancing at Solent Creatives, an on-campus advertising and marketing agency that specialises in connecting students with business clients. This offers students the opportunity to gain work experience, create additional work for their portfolios and make industry contacts.

Students are encouraged to take on work experience throughout their studies. Advertising students have previously secured placements at Saatchi & Saatchi, McCann Erickson, EHS 4D, Chemistry Communications, B&Q, Channel 4 (Jersey) and Palmer Hargreaves.

What does this course lead to?

Following this course, you will be well placed for a variety of careers in national or international advertising agencies. Students will work on competition briefs for organisations such as the Design & Art Directors Association (D&AD) and the Young Creative Network (YCN).
