About the program

This postgraduate professional program is designed to develop graduates to be work-ready for careers in nutrition and dietetics across practice areas including clinical dietetics, private practice, food service management, public health nutrition, sports nutrition and nutrition research. This program develops student competencies to exceed the accreditation requirements of the Dietitians Association of Australia, making graduates eligible to apply for accredited practising dietitian (APD) status within the Dietitians Association of Australia. This program is distinctive because of its emphasis on developing evidence-based practitioners that have had intensive preparation in evidence-based dietetic practice, nutrition research and international engagement. All students will be required to participate in an international placement as part of their program.

The Bond University Master of Nutrition and Dietetic Practice program uses an education model comprising a combination of lectures, workshops, case studies, field trips, simulations, internships and research. In keeping with the program philosophy of producing dietitians with a difference, the program places an emphasis on real-world experience from the first semester. Students engage in activities such as case-based learning and simulation to develop their competency as nutrition professionals.

Specialist consultant practitioners and dietitians with industry expertise provide students with insight into dietetic practice and career opportunities in the profession. Students also benefit from the extensive professional experience of nutrition and dietetic academic staff in a range of fields, including clinical dietetics, sports nutrition, the food industry, private practice and public health nutrition, as well as their national and international professional networks.

Please note: this is not a PG pre-registration course for individuals with a first degree now wanting to train as a dietitian, but a PG post-registration programme suitable as continuing professional development for dietitians and other healthcare professionals. It is not available to international students.

The University of Nottingham has been a recognised provider of the British Dietetic Association's Masters in Advanced Dietetic programme since 2008. These new postgraduate qualifications have been designed to meet the BDA's requirements of both work based learning and research skills.

Course Structure

The course is structured in 2 parts. Part A. Foundational studies for dietetics and Part B. Evidence based dietetics, planning and treatment and C. Dietetic practice. All students complete Parts B and C. Depending upon prior qualifications, you may receive credit for Part A.

Part A. Foundational studies for dietetics
These studies will provide you with an orientation to dietetics at the advanced undergraduate and early graduate level. You will examine the nutrition and food science underpinning dietetics, consider population health in the context of nutrition and the Australian food supply, explore health behaviours and cultural competency, assessment of nutritional status, and the role of diet in the causation and treatment of chronic diseases that are endemic in westernised societies. These studies are intended for students whose previous qualification is not in nutrition science.

Part B. Evidence based dietetics, planning and treatment
These studies will provide you with the core knowledge and professional skills relevant to thoughtful, innovative and evidence-based dietetic practice and for accreditation with the Dietitian Association of Australia. You will learn about a range of clinical conditions and diseases and develop skill in dietetic education and case management with a focus on person-centred care. This will include an understanding of issues relating to healthcare systems, services, management, ethics and quality improvement.

Part C. Dietetic practice
These studies will enable you to connect the theoretical components of your course with the practical aspects of dietetics practice including under the valuable guidance of practitioners. Your research skills, dietetics knowledge and professional practice skills will be extended in practice contexts in preparation for entering the workforce.

Course Overview

​The programme is approved by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and is accredited by the British Dietetic Association. It enables nutrition graduates to study dietetics so that they can apply to the HCPC to register as a Dietitian at Postgraduate Diploma or MSc level.

The Postgraduate Diploma programme is closely aligned to the BSc (Hons) Human Nutrition and Dietetics programme and contains three compulsory placements in NHS Dietetics Departments in Wales.

Students exiting with the Postgraduate Diploma can return to undertake the dissertation on a part-time basis to gain the MSc Dietetics.

Entry Requirements​

Applicants should have an honours degree (1st class or 2:1) in human nutrition, or a degree that includes nutrition in the awards title, with sufficient emphasis on physiology and biochemistry (50 credits in total required, with at least 20 credits in human physiology and 20 credits in human biochemistry).

It is also preferable for candidates to have 10 credits in sociology and 10 credits in psychology, however this can be taken alongside other modules on the programme if successful.

Students should have completed their degree not more than five years before their proposed entry to this Masters.
Applicants who have a first or upper second-class honours degree in nutrition, which does not contain either sufficient biochemistry or physiology (but not both), can undertake further relevant modules at undergraduate level, prior to applying for the programme.

Applicants who do not have a degree award in nutrition (1st or 2:1) but meet the requirements for biochemistry and physiology, will need to undertake a further relevant taught course of study to at least to postgraduate diploma level prior to applying for the course.

Applicants who speak English as a second language must have adequate command of English, with an IELTS score of 7, with at least 6.5 in all elements.

​Course Content​​

During the programme students are educated to be responsive practitioners, able to adapt to the changing needs of society. The course is designed to produce critically thinking and reflective professionals who have comprehensive theoretical knowledge, along with a spirit of enquiry and an analytical and creative approach to problem solving.

The programme has two main parts; the Postgraduate Diploma and MSc.

Postgraduate Diploma in Dietetics:
This part contains the taught academic element, which is closely aligned to the BSc (Hons) Human Nutrition and Dietetics programme and three periods of practical training. On completion students can graduate with a Postgraduate Diploma in Dietetics, which leads to eligibility to apply to the HCPC to register as a Dietitian.

MSc:
Students can undertake the dissertation to obtain MSc Dietetics, which can be achieved straight after the Postgraduate Diploma element. On completion students can be awarded MSc Dietetics, which also leads to eligibility to apply to the HCPC to register as a Dietitian. Alternatively the dissertation can be taken after being awarded the Postgraduate Diploma, within 5 years of initial enrolment; this can be taken on a part-time basis.

The taught academic part of the course contains six modules at Level 7 (Masters). In addition, students study professional body modules (level 5) in order to fulfil the requirements of the Health and Care Professions Council and the British Dietetic Association curriculum guidelines.

Learning & Teaching​

​The taught element of the programme involve lectures, tutorials and practical work. Tutorials are mainly case study based where students apply the theoretical knowledge gained in lectures to problem solve case scenarios. Practical sessions are either food based, involve giving presentations or practice in consultation skills. The practicals take place in the specialist food facilities and the clinical simulation suite.

It is expected that students undertake independent reading and self-study; this is aided by the use of Moodle, the Virtual Learning Environment in use at the University.

In addition students undertake 3 periods of practical training in NHS Dietetics departments in Wales. Full preparation is given prior to the placements and students are supported and visited during the placements by Dietetic Academic staff.

All students are allocated a personal tutor who offers pastoral support and guides the student through personal development planning.

Assessment

Each module is assessed by examination and/or assignment. All the modules are externally assessed. The clinical training placements have to be successfully completed to proceed and graduate.

Employability & Careers​

Dietitians normally begin their career in the National Health Service where they progress to the main clinical grades. The opportunity exists for specialisation in various aspects of dietetics by means of post-registration education. In addition there are opportunities for dietitians to be involved in health education/promotion, education, research and journalism.

The programme is delivered by blended learning (combined distance learning and on campus modules). Students enrolled for the PgDip Sport and Exercise Nutrition course need to undertake modules to a total of 120 credit points and for the MSc undertake an additional research project of 60 credit points. Modules studied will include: nutrition and exercise metabolism, nutritional assessment, recommendations and requirements, sport-specific nutrition issues, research design and biostatistics, nutrition for health and disease prevention, evidence-based practice in healthcare sciences, practical sports nutrition and the sport and exercise nutrition research project.

Attendance

Full-time

The full-time programme (over 1 calendar year; i.e. three academic semesters) is comprised of taught modules in semester one and two and the research project which is completed in semester three. All semester one modules are delivered by distance-learning. In semester two, one 30 credit point module is delivered by distance-learning with the remaining two 15 credit point modules being delivered as face-to-face modules at the Jordanstown campus.

Part-time

In part-time mode, all modules in year one, and semester one of year two are delivered by distance-learning. In semester two of year two students will attend the Jordanstown campus for the remaining two 15 credit point modules which are delivered as face-to-face modules. As for full-time students, students taking the programme in part-time mode who progress to the MSc (and depending upon the nature of their project work chosen) will opt to undertake their MSc research project work either on-campus (at either the Jordanstown or Coleraine campus) or may complete their project work in the work-place (subject to approval by the project module co-ordinator).

Professional recognition

This programme achieves the competencies required for graduate registration of the British Dietetic Association (BDA) Sport and Exercise Nutrition Register (SENr).

Summary

The overall aim of this master's programme is to provide science graduates with core knowledge and skills to practice as a dietitian and develop advanced research skills. Registered dietitians are qualified health professionals who assess diagnose and treat diet and nutrition problems both at individual and population level. Dietitians use the most up to date research on diet and health which they translate into practical guidance to enable people to make appropriate lifestyle and food choices.

This course is an intensive 20 Masters taught course designed to provide a scientific base in the study of food and nutrition and the effect of diet and health on wellbeing. On completion of this course graduates will be qualified to work as a dietitian and be eligible to register with HCPC/CORU. Graduates will also have advanced research skills having completed an independent reasearch project as part of this degree.

This course is designed for pre-registration training in Dietetics. It is not aimed at qualified dietitians wishing to take a masters research degree. Qualified dietitians are encouraged to apply for the MSc Human Nutrition.

About

This course is a master's course. It is studied on a full-time basis over 20 months where attendance is required on campus most days each week during semester. During placement attendance is required each day. This course cannot be taken part time.

This course provides study of core modules in human nutrition and dietetics and includes two clinical placement blocks. Year 1 semester 1 (60 credits) and 2 (75 credits) are taught modules in core subjects. Year 1 semester 3 students undertake Human Nutrition Masters research project which is an integral part of the programme where students undertake an independent research project. Clinical placement modules are undertaken in year 2 and are generally within a hospital and/or community setting. Placements are predominantly in Northern Ireland with consolidation tutorials at University between placements. Successful students will be eligible to apply to the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) for Registration as a dietitian or apply to CORU for validation of qualification to practice as a dietitian in the Republic of Ireland.

Dietetic placements are an integral part of this course. Placements are generally undertaken within hospital and/or community Trusts in Northern Ireland and must be approved by the University in advance of allocation to students.

Attendance

This course is a taught full-time course over 20 months including master's research project and clinical placements. Attendance is required during semester most days each week. Placements require daily full time attendance. This course cannot be taken part time.

Work placement / study abroad

Dietetic placements are an integral part of this course. Placements are generally undertaken within hospital and/or community Trusts in Northern Ireland and are approved by the University in advance of allocation to students.

Placements are unpaid and full time. Placements are approved by HCPC therefore graduates from this programme are eligible to apply for registration with the Statutory Regulator for Dietitians, the HCPC. The course is also accredited by the British Dietetic Association.

Professional recognition

Approved by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) for the purpose of providing eligibility to apply for registration with the HCPC as a dietitian.

Career options

The academic content of the programme together with the experience gained from clinical practice placements leads to excellent employment opportunities. What will I learn?

Our modules aim to develop your critical awareness of evidence based practice. This includes studying clinical, biological, psychological and social aspects of dietetics and then utilising and developing your skills in a series of placement opportunities.

You will also develop applied research skills in nutrition and dietetics aimed at promoting high-quality effective care.

How will I be taught?

Teaching is delivered in interactive workshops, lectures, tutorials and practicals delivered in course-specific facilities and laboratories, and on placement with local NHS trusts and practitioners.
Due to the need to achieve professional accreditation and registration, the teaching experience is intensive and student focused. Contact hours vary through the semesters, but you will have around 12 contact hours and 18 hours of self-study per week, including working towards assessments.

How will I be assessed?

There are a variety of assessments including examinations, coursework, and group and individual presentations.

This course is for graduates of biological sciences who want to extend their studies into the professional field of dietetics. Dietetics is the management of diseases that are amenable to dietary intervention and the prevention of nutrition related disorders.  A dietitian influences food selection and eating behaviour of an individual based on specific nutritional or food requirements.

With a clinical and health promotion focus, this course includes three blocks of integrated practice placements of 4, 12 and 12 weeks duration within a hospital and/or primary care setting.

Teaching, learning and assessment

The emphasis is on student-centred learning where your previous knowledge and skills are used to develop your new subject area. Learning activities include lectures, tutorials, workshops and practical classes and are guided using web-based supported materials.

You will also attend three practical placements to enable the integration of theoretical knowledge with practical experience. A variety of assessment methods are used across the course.  Normally, there are 12 – 15 students on this course. This ensures that individuals receive excellent support and benefit from sharing their experiences with classmates.

Teaching hours and attendance

Each module is equivalent to a notional 150 hours of work which is made up of attendance in class and independent work. The structure of each module is different with different attendance requirement  for each timetabled module. Over an average semester the expectation is that during 14 weeks of teaching this will equate to approx. 40 hours per week of student effort (contact classes plus independent study time). Students normally complete the course via a full time route but part-time routes are available and can be discussed with the Programme Leader.

All placements are completed on a full-time basis, normally Monday – Friday, 9am – 5pm.

Links with industry/professional bodies

This course provides eligibility to apply for registration as a dietitian with the Health and Care Professions Council. It is also accredited by the British Dietetic Association.

Modules

15 credits: Food and Nutrition/ Principles of Nutrition Science/ Clinical Sciences/ Therapeutic Interventions/ Professional Studies/ Professional Practice/ Evaluation of Practice/ Pharmacology and Pharmacogenetics. You will also carry out practice placements, which you must pass but which do not carry any credit. If studying for an MSc, you will also complete a dissertation (60 credits).

Careers

Career prospects on completion of the course are varied. Most graduates normally choose to work within the NHS as dietitians. Others will work in health education, health promotion, general practice, private healthcare and government advisory posts. Opportunities also exist in the food and pharmaceutical industries in, for example: food labelling; nutrient profiling; product and recipe development; product evaluation and special diet foods. Some graduates may apply for the opportunity to study for a higher degree (MPhil or PhD).

Pathways in this programme include the following shared modules: applying evidence to practice, developing self and others, project design for research, and the research dissertation. The pathways will all have at least one pathway specific module and two programme optional modules. To gain a postgraduate certificate, you’ll need to earn 60 credits. You’ll study three modules worth 20 credits each: applying evidence to practice, a pathway specific module or a programme option module if you are not pursuing a specific pathway, and a programme option module. To gain a postgraduate diploma, you’ll need to earn 120 credits. You’ll study three modules worth 20 credits each: project design for research, developing self and others, and a pathway specific module or programme option. To be awarded the full masters degree, you’ll need to earn a total of 180 credits. You’ll study the same core modules as the postgraduate diploma, with the extra 60 credits coming from your research dissertation.

The Master of Dietetics (MDiet) degree is an academic and professional dietetic training course which prepares graduates to work as dietitians in New Zealand and overseas. This full time, two-year course encompasses specialist papers in clinical nutrition, public health, food service, professional skills, research thesis preparation, a block placement and a research project.

The first year of the programme is taught in Dunedin. Early Learning in Dietetics (practical experience placements) will be completed under the supervision of dietetic tutors in hospital, community, public health and foodservice environments. The second year consists of one semester of placements and one semester of research in one of a number of centres.

Structure of the Programme

  1. The programme of study shall consist of papers and a thesis to a total value of 240 points as set down in the MDiet Schedule.
  2. A candidate must pass all the papers in Year One and also demonstrate the required level of professional behaviour before proceeding to Year Two.

An integrated programme covers epidemiological, dietary, public health, social and biological aspects of nutritional science. Specialist topics include: maternal and child nutrition; nutrition in emergencies; nutrition programme planning, evaluation and monitoring; nutrition-related chronic disease. The main programme focus is on nutritional problems in low and middle-income countries – although skills and learning outcomes are widely applicable to populations globally.

The course attracts graduates from many countries and various disciplines who wish to equip themselves for global health nutrition research and teaching, operational work in the field or community nutrition programmes, work in public health nutrition, including health promotion and nutrition education, and for policy and programme planning in nutrition.The MSc has been designed to focus on nutritional problems in low and middle income countries. This course is not a dietetic qualification.

Graduates work for local and national governments, NGOs, international agencies, academic institutions, and in fields ranging from food emergencies to research on nutrient-gene interactions.

Project Report

During the summer months (July - August), students complete research project which enables them to work on a subject of special interest, practice skills of analysis and presentation, and integrate different aspects of the year's work, for submission by early September.
