Didactic Concept

The master consists of different parts that you must complete successfully:

 A two-week residential session, during which you meet the faculty and interact in debates and exercises, assessing your ability to apply an integrated knowledge base, meant for solving problems in disaster situations

The Master will be based on:

This will allow the student:
-to learn the core content of the program and to decide what to study in a greater detail at different levels
-to interact with the Faculty and facilitators for a better understanding of difficult points
-to collaborate with other students to learn how to deal with team-work

 a residential session during which the students meet the faculty and peers to interact in debates, practical exercises and simulation exercises, meant for solving problems in disaster situations and assessing the student’s ability to apply an integrated knowledge base. The course, held in a location fixed by the Executive Committee, is scheduled for the next edition from May 24th to June 6th, 2014;

 a final on line examination provided on the Internet composed of an electronic simulation exercise of a disaster presenting medico-organisational and medical care problems and a multiple choice questionnaire on the content of the electronic textbook.

The Conscious Sedation in Dentistry PGDip aims to provide you with:
-A systematic understanding of the theoretical principles that underpin conscious sedation and anxiety management in dentistry
-A comprehensive practical understanding of clinical skills in techniques of intravenous and inhalational sedation, as applicable to UK practice in dentistry

Delivery

Although based at Newcastle University, teaching is provided in academic and clinical facilities throughout the northern region (Newcastle, Sunderland and Darlington).

This one year part time course consists of 10 didactic days of lectures and seminars, plus 14 half days of hands-on clinical training in sedation techniques. Didactic and clinical teaching is spaced evenly over a full academic year.

Clinical sessions are held in the Sedation Department at Newcastle Dental Hospital and in the Newcastle Community Service, which are fully equipped for all aspects of intravenous and inhalational sedation.

The School of Dental Sciences at Newcastle is one of the most modern and best equipped in the country, occupying a spacious, purpose-built facility. The School is in the same building as the Dental Hospital, adjacent to the Medical School and Royal Victoria Infirmary teaching hospital, forming one of the largest integrated teaching and hospital complexes in the country.

The RCE master’s program is 48 semester hours in length. However, a 60-semester hour option is available for students who wish to pursue 60 hours of graduate coursework. The RCE program is fully accredited by the Council on Rehabilitation Education (CORE). Students completing the RCE program are eligible to become Certified Rehabilitation Counselors (CRC). The RCE program is an on-line program. Distance students must meet criteria for full or conditional admission. The MA in Healthcare Ethics & Law course aims to provide the highest quality of training in health care ethics and health care law in a flexible and interdisciplinary way. There is an emphasis on the application of bioethical and legal theory to real world scenarios, thus catering to the practical needs of health care and legal professionals and those in related fields. Students gain an expert knowledge and understanding of bioethical and medico-legal theories, and the skills needed to apply them to real world scenarios in a diverse range of contexts. They will also develop the ethical and medico-legal knowledge and research skills required for writing a Masters-level dissertation, and will be well prepared for further research if they so desire.

You study a wide variety of ethical and legal subjects including autonomy, consent, refusal of treatment, confidentiality, the moral status of the foetus, resource allocation, genetic testing, HIV testing, medical malpractice, clinical negligence, organ and tissue transplantation, fertility treatment, genetic manipulation, research ethics, stem cell research and euthanasia.

Teaching and learning

Teaching tends to defy the traditional boundaries associated with lectures and seminars. Generally, each class in a course unit has a duration of 2 hours, and is split roughly equally between a formal, didactic period and a structured discussion period (most often based on the so-called challenge-response model). Nevertheless, each class is considered a seminar or lecture, and attendance of all classes of a course unit for which a student is enrolled is thus compulsory . For course units of 15 credit value there will generally be 15 hours of face-to-face teaching throughout the semester in which the unit is delivered, and twice that amount for 30 credit units.

Coursework and assessment

Assessment of all taught course units (to a total of 120 credits) is by assessed coursework in the form of essays of 4,000 words per 15 credit course unit and up to 7,000 words for the two 30 credit core course units. In addition, students who wish to complete the MA must submit a 12,000 to 15,000 word dissertation by independent research (60 credits); no dissertation is required for the PGDip or PGCert. Part-time students undertake a supervised dissertation in the summer months of year two. Please note that the part-time students can extend their registration for extra 3 months to submit their dissertations in December of their second year, instead of September (you will be advised of the exact date on the second year of the course).

Those who do not successfully complete the MA you may be considered for the award of the Postgraduate Diploma.

Those who do not successfully complete the Postgraduate Diploma may be considered for the award of the Postgraduate Certificate.
The awards of the MA or Postgraduate Diploma are classified according to Pass/Merit/Distinction. The Postgraduate Certificate is awarded unclassified.

This programme aims to give you a scientific understanding of the cellular and molecular biology of cancer, its epidemiology and pathology, and to place this in a clinical context. You will then address how this knowledge effects therapeutic approaches and disease management.

It aims to allow you to understand the research process by drawing on examples within the department and its associated clinical trials unit. A key part of this Masters programme is the planning, execution and reporting of a piece of independent study leading to submission of a dissertation.

At all levels we aim to encourage interactive rather than didactic learning and lecturing. Therefore, in addition to assembling and learning facts you will also to consider some of the philosophical challenges which underlie the treatment of cancer.

The programme is studied part time over 2 years and includes a taught element plus a work place based dissertation. This is made up of 4 residential taught modules per year (8 in total). Taught modules consist of one or two 5 day blocks Monday to Friday approximately 9am - 5.30pm. The total taught element consists of 45-55 days of attendance over the whole programme depending on your choice of optional modules.

You can opt for a Postgraduate Diploma on completion of the core modules and 40 credits of optional modules, or an MSc on successful completion of the taught programme and an independently researched dissertation.

Established for more than 35 years, and one of the longest-running clinical training programmes in the UK, the Orthodontics MScD course is designed to provide clinical and academic training for future specialists in clinical orthodontics in a highly professional and rewarding environment.

This three-year full-time course aims to equip you with the skills needed to perform as a competent specialist in orthodontics, with focus on the clinical, theoretical and research areas required for provision of adequate patient care.

Open to home, EU and overseas students, successful completion of the course will result in the award of a Master’s degree in Orthodontics. The course is also recognised for training purposes by the Royal Colleges for the Membership in Orthodontics of both Edinburgh and the Bicollegiate examination.

Didactic, self-directed and problem-based modular teaching extends throughout the three-year programme. The course provides clinical training within the teaching hospital and in district units in Swansea, Newport, and North Glamorgan. The first two years of the course consist of structured research.

Structure

This is a full-time, three-year course, with the final examination in the spring of year three. The course consists of three main elements:

3. A research project and preparation of a dissertation.

Throughout the programme, you will spend five clinical (half day) sessions per week providing direct patient care and one session per week attending new patient and joint clinics. An additional session is available for research during the summer term resulting in there being approximately 560 hours available.

The MSc in Clinical Dermatology is designed specifically for doctors with a special interest in dermatology after gaining at least one year of general medical experience.

The course aims to give a firm grounding in the fundamentals of clinical and scientific dermatology, with priority given to clinical instruction but also an emphasis on the scientific content of dermatology.

It is particularly suitable for overseas medical graduates, but is also appropriate as an additional course to contribute to any dermatology specialist training programme. Most students are self-funded, though some obtain awards from the British Council, respective Governments, Commonwealth Universities Scholarships and employers.

The MSc comprises seven modules delivered using face-to-face teaching at the Welsh Institute of Dermatology at the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff, UK.

Distinctive features:

• Weekly observational clinical placements in local dermatology centres.
• Lectures from international guest speakers.
• Skills workshops, including practical skin surgery sessions.

The course is also accredited by Hong Kong College of Family Physicians and Hong Kong Medical Association.

Structure

The MSc is a full-time course, consisting of two stages.  It involves attending daily teaching sessions, Monday to Friday, and some Saturdays.

Stage 1 is the teaching stage. It lasts for eight months, and consists of six 20-credit modules, totalling 120 credits, at Level 7.

Stage 2, the dissertation stage, lasts for a further four months, to a total of one academic year, and will include a dissertation of 60 credits at Level 7, to achieve a combined total of 180 credits at Level 7 to complete the MSc programme.

You may leave the course after successfully completing 60 credits with a Postgraduate Certificate, or after successfully completing 120 credits with a Postgraduate Diploma. 

The dissertation is based on a literature-review and normally not more than 20,000 words supported by such other material as may be considered appropriate to the subject and should include the results of your period of project work. The dissertation is worth 60 credits and is weighted 50% for the purpose of calculating your final mark.

A practical skills module runs throughout the duration of Stage 1 of the course. This is supported by significant patient interaction. You will be allocated to the Dermatology Day Treatment Unit for a 1 – 2 week period for practical clinical experience. You will be required to attend regular general outpatient dermatology clinics in Cardiff and the surrounding area. There are also day visits to other dermatology centres in Wales.

The programme provides a comprehensive overview of the foundational concerns and current debates in sociology and offers a range of options for exploring applications in specific areas of research. Gaming and multimedia have assumed an important place in our society, giving rise to a booming industry with turnovers exceeding the entertainment movie industry and leaps in computer software and hardware development. Advances show no sign of slackening with new types of games and hardware reaching the market regularly. Moreover, the value of games as an educational tool is increasingly being recognised and the integration of multimedia tools into everyday life is still continuing, creating fertile grounds for those with a high-level degree in the area of Game and Media Technology.

The research field deals with modelling virtual worlds, creating characters and behaviour, generating effective scenarios, building multi-sensory interfaces and redesigning didactic concepts. You will undertake advanced studies in political sociological analysis and this programme is ideal preparation for a research degree. It assumes an undergraduate training in sociology and/or political science, or a cognate discipline, or relevant professional experience such as journalism.

Course detail

The programme is distinctive in its focus upon social and political movements, protest, and the less conventional and institutionalised forms of political action and participation, environmental politics and globalisation, but students with interests in other areas of more conventional and institutionalised politics are well catered for.

You will gain an understanding of the interaction and interdependence among social and political institutions, processes and action, especially collective action. The programme begins with a focus upon protest and social movements, and in the second term you may choose to focus upon either or both of environmental politics and / or processes of global social change and questions of political order. There is a wide range of optional modules from which to choose, and at the end of the programme, you should have a much enhanced understanding of processes of social and political change and the theoretical and methodological approaches to their interpretation and study.

Purpose

Depending upon your choice of option modules, the programme will also give you:

  • An understanding of the theoretical problems of political sociological inquiry and their relationship to research practices
  • Knowledge of the methodological procedures used to investigate a wide range of practical and substantive issues
  • Skills in practical research-related tasks

The programme is also designed to enhance your professional development. We place considerable emphasis on the socialisation of graduate students into a research community. This is reflected in our pedagogical approaches to teaching and learning. There is less didactic teaching and more emphasis on structured seminars with greater participation from students. Class sizes are generally much smaller than at undergraduate level and you will be taught by established members of the academic staff, many of whom are internationally recognized leaders in their particular fields of inquiry. This facilitates close working relationships between staff and students. You will also be encouraged to participate in the staff/graduate seminar which allows MA and research students the opportunity to become more fully involved in a professional research culture, and to meet visiting speakers from many universities in Britain and beyond.

The Dublin Dental University Hospital provides a clinical doctorate programme those results in the award of a Doctorate in Dental Surgery (D.Ch.Dent.) from Trinity College Dublin. There are six individual strands, five of which are currently available to applicants:

Orthodontics
Paediatric Dentistry
Periodontology
Prosthodontics
Oral Surgery

The three year clinical training programme is recognised as meeting the entry criteria for the speciality FFD examinations held by the Faculty of Dentistry, Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland.

It is the intention of the courses to develop clinical skills in the light of currently available scientific knowledge. Students are required to attend a course of study and to pass written and clinical examinations throughout the course. There is a significant academic component including design and completion of a research project with the submission of a thesis at Doctorate level at the end of the third year. The thesis will be the subject of a viva voce examination.

The first year of the programme is designed to provide a background in relevant sciences and to develop basic skills within the chosen speciality. The emphasis during the 2nd and 3rd years is on the development of high levels of diagnostic ability, treatment planning, operative skills and patient management.

Periodontology

This course in Periodontology focuses on the management of periodontal conditions and the planning and execution of oral Implant therapy. The course includes didactic and clinical components and provides the basis for continuing professional development after completion of the programme. Students will be instructed in clinical periodontics and Implant Dentistry with emphasis on the scientific basis for treatment. The course has been developed with the intent that it should be recognised for speciality training by the Dental Council of Ireland under the auspices of the relevant advisory committee of the Irish Committee for Specialist Training in Dentistry. Students will undertake a research project leading to a thesis. The course leads to the award of Doctorate in Dental Surgery (D.Ch.Dent). Publication of clinical and research work is encouraged. The course is currently accredited by the European Federation of Periodontology.

Our aim is to produce students who will be at the forefront of Paediatric Dentistry, as clinicians, teachers and future leaders. - Course format and assessment -

Modular programme consisting of 180 credits, plus an additional 180 credits of non-modular supervised clinical work (360 credits in total) as follows:

(i) Two taught modules, covering the scientific and clinical basis of Paediatric Dentistry usually assessed by written examination;

(ii) One clinical module, involving supervised clinical practice and examined by a mixture of case studies on treated and unseen patients, practical, or oral examinations;

(iii) One research module assessed by a written research project report and an oral examination.

Career prospects

The majority of overseas graduates return to their own country to practice paediatric dentistry. Home students use this programme for career progression in the UK and are only accepted if they already have a UK (NHS) National Training Number and training at either KCH or GSTT. For UK trainees, the MSc counts towards 2 years of their NTN training. For those overseas students who do require a 3 year training, an additional third year is available (the PGCert) following on from MSc.

About Relational Coaching

The Ashridge approach to coaching involves paying attention to what goes on between the client and coach, and making the relationship explicit. Often this exploration casts new light on the client’s relationship with their organisation.

Relational coaching means understanding that the relationship between coach and client is at the heart of effective coaching and is an essential vehicle for learning and change. A key understanding that informs all our coaching contracts is that each relationship is specific to a particular organisational context.

The client’s agenda will be defined by their organisational context, and so will your relationship with that client, albeit at a more indirect and subtle level.

Clients will inevitably bring their own individual patterns of relating into the coaching arena, replaying their core beliefs and attitudes about themselves and their abilities. The coaching relationship therefore becomes a forum for understanding stale patterns and for experimenting with new ways of being in a relationship.

The theoretical approach is integrative, drawing on a range of sound psychological theories and principles from the fields of coaching, psychological therapies and organisation development. Ashridge coaches work on a relational basis with their clients and are likely to explore on a number of levels. These levels are primarily:

‌•The assumptions clients have about the organisation within which they operate
‌•The relationships that they have with the people within the organisation
‌•What the client personally brings to these relationships.
‌•The relationship between coach and the person being coached is entered into and agreed in an explicit way from the outset. We draw up an initial contract that specifies the boundaries and articulates the intentions and goals for the relationship. However, relationships are dynamic and the contract needs to reflect this. Ashridge believes that change takes place through the process of relating, and this is the whole point of a responsive coaching contract. Therefore, what seemed figural and important at the first meeting may shift to a new way of seeing the situation by the third or fourth meeting.
‌•We see this process of change emerging in relationships as a crucial way of understanding not only what goes on in an effective coaching relationship, but also how change takes place in organisations.
