Master of Science in Craniofacial Science and Diploma in Endodontics

This combined program is a clinical specialty program that allows students to complete the MSc in Craniofacial Science combined with clinical specialty preparation through the Diploma in Endodontics. The program provides to successful applicants holding a DMD degree or its equivalent, education and training for potential clinicians, research workers, and teachers. Completion of the program requires successful completion of the clinical and didactic requirements associated with the diploma program in the Faculty of Dentistry, successful completion of the MSc in Craniofacial Science course requirements, and successful defense and submission of an 18-credit research thesis to the Faculty of Graduate Studies. In this program option, the degree and diploma are awarded conjointly and both must be completed to graduate. Graduates will be eligible to take the examinations for specialty certification in endodontics of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada and the American Board of Endodontics. The normal course of study is three full academic years.

Achievement of the Diploma in Orthodontics requires successful completion of the clinical and didactic requirements associated with the diploma program in the Faculty of Dentistry, successful completion of the MSc in Craniofacial Science course requirements, and successful defense and submission of the thesis to the Faculty of Graduate Studies. In this program option, the degree and the diploma are awarded conjointly and both must be completed to graduate. Graduates will be eligible to take the examinations for specialty certification in orthodontics offered by the Royal College of Dentists of Canada and the American Board of Orthodontics. Normal course of study is 38 months.

This combined program is a clinical specialty program providing to successful applicants holding a DMD degree or its equivalent, education and training for clinicians, researchers and teachers. The student will divide clinical training between the University of British Columbia Point Grey Campus and BC Children’s Hospital. Achievement of the Diploma in Pediatric Dentistry requires successful completion of the clinical and didactic requirements associated with the diploma program in the Faculty of Dentistry, successful completion of the MSc in Craniofacial Science course requirements, and successful defense and submission of the thesis to the Faculty of Graduate Studies. The Master of Athletic Training program consists of 60 credit hours which are inclusive of the latest research, knowledge, and techniques, as well as all required NATA Athletic Training Education Competencies in the following areas:

  • Evidence-based practice,
  • Prevention and health promotion,
  • Clinical examination and diagnosis,
  • Acute care of injury and illness,
  • Therapeutic interventions,
  • Psychosocial strategies and referral,
  • Healthcare administration, and
  • Professional development and responsibility.

The program is designed to provide structured didactic (classroom) and supervised practice experiences to prepare a student for an entry-level position in athletic training. Didactic courses are sequenced and integrated to maximize student learning. The purpose of supervised practice courses is to provide a structured clinical experience in which to prepare for professional practice and engage in professional socialization.

Throughout the Master of Athletic Training program, supervised practice courses provide direct patient care opportunities for a variety of injuries and patient populations including contact (high risk) and non-contact sports, male and female patients, upper extremity and lower extremity injuries, sport and non-sport settings, and general medical conditions.

Clinical Experience

Students gain clinical experience in the following settings:

  • Collegiate: The University of Tulsa, an NCAA Division I university that competes in the American Athletic Conference, and; Oral Roberts University, an NCAA Division I university that competes in the Summit League;
  • Various local high schools including Union, Owasso, Cascia Hall, and Broken Arrow;
  • Eastern Oklahoma Orthopedic Center, a local sports medicine clinic;
  • American Airlines maintenance facility, an industrial setting,
  • General medical, through rotations with sports medicine fellows and through the on-site health clinic; and
  • Other special events as available. 

In all clinical rotations, students are supervised by BOC certified and Oklahoma licensed athletic trainers. Most students work one on one with their preceptor in the clinical setting.

Athletic training students also gain experience with emergency situations and general medical conditions through clinical simulation scenarios which utilize METIMan, a high fidelity human patient simulator, in our simulation center.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Admission into The University of Tulsa Graduate School,
  • Completion of a baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution,
  • Undergraduate grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale,
  • Submission of General Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores,
  • Completion of 50 hours of observation with a licensed athletic trainer,
  • Three letters of recommendation, including at least one from an athletic trainer verifying observation experience and one from a former or current professor, and
  • Satisfactory completion of the following prerequisite coursework or equivalent coursework (35 credits) with a letter grade of C or better:

The Conscious Sedation in Dentistry PGDip aims to provide you with:

-A systematic understanding of the theoretical principles that underpin conscious sedation and anxiety management in dentistry

-A comprehensive practical understanding of clinical skills in techniques of intravenous and inhalational sedation, as applicable to UK practice in dentistry

-An ability to critically evaluate the evidence-base and clinical issues involved in the safe independent practice of conscious sedation to the highest standard

Delivery

You will undertake substantive self-directed study, including:

-Two written assignments of 2,000 words each

-An oral presentation

-A 6,000 word clinical case dissertation

The Diploma is awarded after satisfactory completion of a final examination at the end of the course.

Although based at Newcastle University, teaching is provided in academic and clinical facilities throughout the northern region (Newcastle, Sunderland and Darlington).

This one year part time course consists of 10 didactic days of lectures and seminars, plus 14 half days of hands-on clinical training in sedation techniques. Didactic and clinical teaching is spaced evenly over a full academic year.

Clinical sessions are held in the Sedation Department at Newcastle Dental Hospital and in the Newcastle Community Service, which are fully equipped for all aspects of intravenous and inhalational sedation.

The School of Dental Sciences at Newcastle is one of the most modern and best equipped in the country, occupying a spacious, purpose-built facility. The School is in the same building as the Dental Hospital, adjacent to the Medical School and Royal Victoria Infirmary teaching hospital, forming one of the largest integrated teaching and hospital complexes in the country.

-A cone beam CT scanner and implant planning software, used extensively for patients treated on our implant programmes

-In-house production laboratories providing excellent learning opportunities around clinician-technician communication

The MPH in Global Health is intended to provide candidates with a clear understanding of global health issues and how those issues affect public health policy and practice. 

The MPH in Global Health programme will offer solid public health training and exposure to global health politics, policies, systems and practices through didactic teaching sessions, team-based research and presentations, and individual work-based projects or dissertations.

Students undertake taught modules over two semesters. Students will be required to submit a dissertation on a pre-approved global health topic. Successful completion of the dissertation and the assessments of the taught modules will lead to award of the MPH in Global Health.

The first semester is spent learning the general tools of public health, including epidemiology and biostatistics.

WORLD CLASS FACILITIES

  • The Centre for Public Health at Queen’s University hosts one of five UK Clinical Research Collaboration (UKCRC) Public Health Research Centres of Excellence to encourage multidisciplinary working and increase capacity to address complex population-level health issues. The Centre for Public Health also hosts the Northern Ireland Cancer Registry which is responsible for the production of official statistics on cancer in Northern Ireland, and provides evidence to help inform decision making about cancer services. This can be a valuable resource for students interested in Global Health as well.

STUDENT EXPERIENCE

  • One of our strengths is a world-renowned interdisciplinary staff with experience in a wide range of public health programmes and research both in the UK and in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). This is reflected in the content of the core and Global Health currriculum. Students are based in the Centre of Excellence for Public Health Northern Ireland, which is one of five UKCRC Public Health Research Centres of Excellence in the UK. You will be taught and mentored by world-class researchers.
  • You will be taught by public health leaders and practitioners working in a wide range of disciplines. Their aim is to make effective change that will benefit the health of underserved populations, often in low-resource areas. The course attracts students from all over the world, further enriching students’ experience.

COURSE STRUCTURE

Semester 1

Public Health Sciences (25 CATS)

  • This module discusses the collection of demographic data, demographic analysis techniques and health effects of population characteristics. It also demonstrates understanding of epidemiological concepts and methodologies, and the appropriate interpretation of descriptive and analytic epidemiological study findings. The basic principles of theory and practice in qualitative health research are discusses and critical assessment and appropriate interpretation of published health evidence demonstrated.

Determinants & Improvement of Health (15 CATS)

  • This module explores the factors that underlie health and disease and will examine variations and inequalities in health; lifestyles and behaviours that impact on health and how our social and physical environment impacts on health. Students will also be given an introduction to health promotion and the planning of health improvement programmes. 

Medical Statistics (20 CATS)

  • This module teaches how to formulate research problems in statistical terms, to design informative experiments, to apply appropriate statistical methods and to correctly interpret results. The module provides the skills necessary for the planning and execution of research projects.Semester 2

Health & Social Care Systems (20 CATS)

  • This module discusses how health systems can be strengthened and covers the application of a public health approach and perspective to the assessment of the health needs of the population and planning, commissioning and delivery of high quality evidence based health and social care services and population screening programmes.

Global Non-communicable Diseases (15 CATS)

  • This module will involve students considering the non-communicable diseases (cancer, diabetes, circulatory disease and eye health) and their global importance. These conditions will be explored from the perspective of epidemiology, prevention and intervention in low- and middle- income countries (LMICs).

Maternal & Child Health in Low Resource Areas (10 CATS)

  • This module reviews maternal & child health / sexual and reproductive health (MCH/SRHR) services to include curative and preventive maternal health, ante-natal and post-natal care, delivery, immunisations, integrated management of childhood illnesses, nutrition and malnutrition, family planning, infertility, emergency obstetric care, services related to abortion/post-abortion care, sexually transmitted infections, and HIV/ AIDS.

Global Health Development (15 CATS)

  • The module will cover the development of global health policies and their influence on health development. Mechanisms for implementing global policies in less and least developed countries will be reviewed and their impact on sustainability. The political, moral and financial risks of chronic emergency aid funding will be assessed.Semester 3

Dissertation (60 CATS)

  • Students are also required to complete a dissertation project under the supervision of an academic from the Centre of Public Health. The aim is to integrate and apply global public health-related knowledge and skills gained in earlier modules. Opportunities to conduct projects in under served areas of LMICs may be arranged.

The Masters program in Educational Leadership offers a planned sequence of experiences designed to develop leadership skills essential to the improvement of administration and supervision in schools, and other educational entities. Emphasis is placed upon increased understanding of the school management function. The institution provides a unique setting for the preparation of multicultural leadership. Curricula are designed to prepare the student for entry-level administrative posts in school systems (Level I for Florida Certification) for professional development and improvement and for leadership positions in other educational entities.

The Ph.D. Program in Educational Leadership has been designed as a non-traditional program to insure the academic success of qualified individuals who are interested in serving in rural and urban settings. The full time program is designed to move students to Ph.D. candidacy in two years. Because of the developmental focus of this program, transfer credit will not be accepted. Student cohorts are admitted once each year in the fall semester.

This program will enable graduates to pursue leadership career opportunities in educational settings and organizations involved with education-related issues. The program is designed to provide professionals with theoretical and practical knowledge that will enable them to be effective change agents and successful program managers, particularly in schools and agencies that serve the needs of minority and at-risk populations. This unique program is organized in the cohort format based upon the constructivist philosophical foundation. Inter-and intra-personal development and cultural factors are identified as essential elements for effective leadership and are emphasized as part of the doctoral program. A strong emphasis is also placed upon acquisition of theoretical content and research methodology.

Counselor Education offers graduate study which emphasizes both didactic and affective experiences as necessary dimensions in the growth and development of professional counselors. The program provides a curriculum that is comprehensive, integrated, and sequential and is approved by the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) and meets State of Florida approval. The course of studies include differentiated patterns of preparation for school counselors, and those persons interested in enhancing their human service skills for employment in other settings such as mental health agencies. The results of the study process are conditioned by interactive teaching methods, education based on case analysis, high competency of trained lecturers, and assimilation of the newest business-oriented European instruments. The majority of the graduates from this programme create successful innovative businesses, are the leaders of the creative teams and create in the companies that receive awards in the national and international business competitions.

Students of these study programmes can choose between the path of Field Expert and Interdisciplinary Expert. Selection is made in the academic information system. Each path (competence) consists of three subjects (18 credits) allocated as follows: 1 year 1 semester (autumn) – first subject (6 credits), 1 year 2 semester (spring) – second subject (6 credits), 2 year 3 semester – third subject (6 credits). A student, who chooses a path of the Field Expert, deepens knowledge and strengthens skills in the main field of studies. The one, who chooses a path of the Interdisciplinary Expert, acquires knowledge and skills in a different area or field of studies. Competence provides a choice of alternative additional subjects.

Acquisition of the competence is certified by the issue of KTU certificate and entry in the appendix to the Master’s diploma. In addition, students can acquire an international certificate (details are provided next to each competence).

Competences are implemented by KTU lecturers – experts in their area – and high level business and public sector organizations; their employees deliver lectures, submit topics for the student’s theses, placement-oriented tasks for the projects, etc.

Skills

The major focus is on the practical skills and business projects

The study programme mostly focuses on the education of practical skills and preparation of business projects. Since 2013, students participate in the annual competitions Silicon Valley Innovation Challenge and Silicon Valley Business Plan Competition taking place in the Silicon Valley, where they approve their project-based ideas among the top-level experts. In 2013, in theSilicon Valley Innovation Challenge competition, the KTU team was awarded in the category of “The Most Innovative Ideas”, whereas in 2014, they shared 4-8 places with other strongest teams.

Content

The programme accentuates three essential competencies of management that supplement each other: (1) management of innovations, (2) development of organisations, and (3) management of the business value. Integration of management, technological, financial, and legal knowledge in study modules educates the specialists characterised by analytical thinking, creativeness and open-mindedness, able to create innovative businesses, improve business processes, to work in creative teams in various industries, develop the strategies of development of organisations reasoned by the value.

Our Neuroscience MSc course will provide you with multidisciplinary training in a range of neuroscience topics, particularly those relevant to psychiatry and neurology. It seeks to equip graduates from a wide range of backgrounds for the next stage of their career, which may be either further full-time study in a neuroscience-related academic research environment, or employment in an academic, clinical or pharmaceutical organisation.

The Programme provides:

  • Multidisciplinary training in neuroscience topics ranging from the molecular to the behavioural. Modules are taught using a variety of teaching methods ranging from didactic instruction through to student-led seminar/tutorial work.
  • Rich research experience (research module) in high quality research environments.
  • Skills, career and professional development in topics relevant to biomedical research. This is done through various exercises including presentation of original research data in both poster and scientific paper formats.
  • Clinicians with specialised supplementary training.
  • A specialised knowledge of a broad range of neuroscience topics relevant to mental illness, psychology and neurology.
  • Students with the ability to conduct high quality research and to present their findings to different audiences.

Course Objectives

Successful students should be able to demonstrate:

  • Specialised knowledge in a broad range of neuroscience topics relevant to mental illness and neurology.
  • The ability to conduct high quality research and to present their findings effectively.
  • The high level of achievement appropriate for students wishing to undertake further research and/or training.

MSc Neuroscience Students take three broad-based neuroscience modules during their first term. During the second term Students ‘specialise’ by choosing one of six taught optional modules, ‘Psychiatric Genetics’, ‘Developmental Neurobiology’, ‘Neurodegeneration’, ‘Neuroimaging’, ‘Cognitive Neuroscience’ and ‘Neural Stem Cells and Nervous System Repair’. In the third and final term, Students work together with their Scientist / Clinician Supervisors to produce original research.       

While most students applying to the course have a degree in a basic biomedical science or in Psychology, the course attracts a much wider range of applicants. These include:

  • Clinicians eager to understand current knowledge and to apply it in their own research or practice and;
  • Students with backgrounds in the physical sciences, mathematics or computing keen to develop, for example, more advanced methods of analysing data from neuroimaging and genetic studies.
  • Graduates who have a strong interest in Neuroscience are also encouraged to apply, and will be considered on an individual basis.

MSc Neuroscience in a speciality

To obtain an MSc in a speciality, students must complete the 3 compulsory taught fundamental modules (A1-A3), followed by a further taught specialised optional module (from Modules B1-B8) and a research project (from Modules C1-C8) in the same speciality.

While every effort will be made to accommodate a student's wishes, the number of research projects that can be offered on each speciality is dependent on availability.  

The degree of MSc Neuroscience will be awarded to:

  • those students who choose a research project that is in a different speciality from their optional taught module. Also included are students who choose research projects that fall outside the specialities encompassed by B1-B8, for example, a research project in eating disorders. 
  • part-time students who are not able to attend one of the specialised taught modules (B1-B8) when they are given to the full-time students but instead attend the B Neuroscience research module.

You will be taught through a combination of lectures, seminars, field work and self-study.

You are assessed through a combination of coursework and examinations.

The MA in Healthcare Ethics & Law course aims to provide the highest quality of training in health care ethics and health care law in a flexible and interdisciplinary way. There is an emphasis on the application of bioethical and legal theory to real world scenarios, thus catering to the practical needs of health care and legal professionals and those in related fields. Students gain an expert knowledge and understanding of bioethical and medico-legal theories, and the skills needed to apply them to real world scenarios in a diverse range of contexts. They will also develop the ethical and medico-legal knowledge and research skills required for writing a Masters-level dissertation, and will be well prepared for further research if they so desire.

You study a wide variety of ethical and legal subjects including autonomy, consent, refusal of treatment, confidentiality, the moral status of the foetus, resource allocation, genetic testing, HIV testing, medical malpractice, clinical negligence, organ and tissue transplantation, fertility treatment, genetic manipulation, research ethics, stem cell research and euthanasia.

Teaching and learning

Teaching tends to defy the traditional boundaries associated with lectures and seminars. Generally, each class in a course unit has a duration of 2 or 3 hours per week, and is split roughly equally between a formal, didactic period and a structured discussion period (most often based on the so-called challenge-response model). Nevertheless, each class is considered a seminar or lecture, and attendance of all classes of a course unit for which a student is enrolled is thus compulsory . For course units of 15 credit value there will generally be 15 hours of face-to-face teaching throughout the semester in which the unit is delivered, and twice that amount for 30 credit units.

Coursework and assessment

Assessment of all taught course units (to a total of 120 credits) is by assessed coursework in the form of essays of 4,000 words per 15 credit course unit and up to 7,000 words for the two 30 credit core course units. In addition, students who wish to complete the MA must submit a 12,000 to 15,000 word dissertation by independent research (60 credits); no dissertation is required for the PGDip or PGCert. Part-time students undertake a supervised dissertation in the summer months of year two. Please note that the part-time students can extend their registration for extra 3 months to submit their dissertations in December of their second year, instead of September (you will be advised of the exact date on the second year of the course).

Those who do not successfully complete the MA you may be considered for the award of the Postgraduate Diploma. 

Those who do not successfully complete the Postgraduate Diploma may be considered for the award of the Postgraduate Certificate.

The awards of the MA or Postgraduate Diploma are classified according to Pass/Merit/Distinction. The Postgraduate Certificate is awarded unclassified.

Course unit details

Students will be required to complete 180 credits: 120 credits comprised of taught course units (each of 15 or 30 credits value), and an independent research element of the course worth 60 credits by way of a Masters dissertation of between 12,000 and 15,000 words, which is undertaken over the summer months of the course. The dissertation should be predominantly law-based.

On the full time course, the 120 taught credits can be split in one of two ways: (1) 60 credits in each of the two semesters; or (2) 75 credits in semester one and 45 credits in semester two.

Students registered on the MA in Healthcare Ethics and Law would need to select a majority of their optional courses from the 'ethics' list (Ethics, Genetics and Genomics; Research Ethics). Global Health Law and Bioethics can count as an ethics or law course.

Course details

The aim of this programme is to give you a scientific understanding of the cellular basis of cancer. We will then discuss how understanding the molecular pathology of the disease can help in stratifying patients to personalised cancer therapeutic approaches and disease management.

Aiming to allow you to understand the research process, this programme draws on examples from within this renowned research Institute and its associated Clinical Trials Unit. A key part of this Masters programme is the planning, execution and reporting of a piece of independent study leading to submission of a dissertation.

At all levels we aim to encourage interactive rather than didactic learning and lecturing. Therefore, in addition to assembling and learning facts you will also to consider some of the philosophical challenges which underlie the treatment of cancer. 

The programme is studied part time over 2.5 years and includes a taught element plus a work place based dissertation. During the first year you normally study 4 taught modules (5 weeks of attendance), whilst in the second year you normally study 3 taught modules (3 weeks of attendance) plus start your dissertation. The programme however is intended to be flexible and other patterns of study are permitted (please discuss with the programme lead (Dr Jean Assender).

You can opt for a Postgraduate Diploma on completion of the core modules and 30 credits of optional modules, or an MSc on successful completion of the taught programme and an independently researched dissertation.

Learning and teaching

As a Birmingham student, you will be joining the academic elite and will have the privilege of learning from world-leading experts, as well as your peers. From the outset you will be encouraged to become an independent and self-motivated learner. We want you to be challenged and will encourage you to think for yourself.

This programme is delivered via one or two 5 day blocks of teaching from Monday to Friday approx 9am-5.30pm. You will participate in a range of teaching styles such as lectures, eLectures (Surgical Oncology sample), small group tutorials, presentations, peer group learning, self-study etc.

Overview

The MSc in Clinical Dermatology is designed specifically for doctors with a special interest in dermatology after gaining at least one year of general medical experience.

The course aims to give a firm grounding in the fundamentals of clinical and scientific dermatology, with priority given to clinical instruction but also an emphasis on the scientific content of dermatology.

It is particularly suitable for overseas medical graduates, but is also appropriate as an additional course to contribute to any dermatology specialist training programme. Most students are self-funded, though some obtain awards from the British Council, respective Governments, Commonwealth Universities Scholarships and employers.

The MSc comprises seven modules delivered using face-to-face teaching at the Welsh Institute of Dermatology at the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff, UK.
