This MSc course will appeal if you wish to explore materials science from a multidisciplinary and collaborative perspective. The programme covers classical and quantum physics, with an emphasis on diamond and application-driven themes. In addition to comprehensive transferable skills training, our CDT cultivates all the skills you will need to work with any high-performance and advanced material in a variety of settings.

During your course, you’ll have the opportunity to make full use of our excellent research facilities, which include state-of-the-art suites for magnetic resonance, electrochemical analysis, abrasion imaging and spectroscopy.

The skills you gain will leave you well placed to enter a number of academic and industrial sectors, including materials, instrumentation, defence and security, aerospace, telecommunications, electronics and manufacturing.

Structure

The course spans 1 year, with the first 20 weeks being lecture-based, providing you with a diverse toolbox in diamond science to complete a successful 20 week research project.

Diamond possesses an amazing range of extreme properties suitable for commercial exploitation. This course allows you to research these properties through our dedicated multidisciplinary training centre. As an independent researcher, you will gain expertise in every aspect of diamond physics, from plasma science to building sensors.

MSc course modules will examine: synthesis, material science, modelling, characterisation, engineering, device integration and material processing and entrepreneurship. You will undertake two mini-projects during your MSc year, which will feed directly into your PhD in years 2-4. During this time, you will study within at least three of the participating institutions.

Rigorous transferable skills training will complement your research work, leaving you fully qualified for future industry or academic employment and ready to meet the requirements of a fascinating and fast-changing industry.

The iSpace is an open plan, social learning area for students. It has display facilities, open-access PCs and bookable partitioned group work areas. There is Wi-Fi coverage throughout the department, and you can connect your own laptop to our network. Mobile devices and tables are available for you to borrow for project work.

We’re right in the middle of the campus and close to the Information Commons and the new Diamond building so you’ll be able to access the University’s many resources.

Part time study

Part-time students normally take one or two taught module in each semester, depending upon whether the course is taken over three or two years. In the final year you’ll also take a dissertation module. For most modules, you’ll usually need to come in for three to four hours per week.

A collegiate economics community

We’re one of the few stand-alone economics departments in the north of England and we’re not part of a large business school. This means you will be part of an economics community, where you will get to know your tutors personally and build friendships with the other students on the masters courses.

Facilities

Our building is in the heart of the campus in the city centre and has undergone a £3.5 million refurbishment. You will have access to the latest economics computer software such as STATA and MATLAB. Our building is close to The Diamond and the Information Commons which are state-of-the-art facilities for private study with access to the latest economics books and journals.

Our courses

We offer a range of masters courses both full-time and part-time. All of our courses give you a thorough technical grounding in economic theory and the techniques of applied economic analysis.

Our courses allow you to specialise in a number of different areas, for example finance and financial economics. If you want to advance your knowledge in one of these areas, Sheffield is one of the best places in the UK.

For each course you’ll need to pass eight taught modules over two semesters, four in each. Modules will be taught mainly through lectures, tutorials and computer labs. Assessment is mostly by exams but also includes some coursework. The compulsory dissertation gives you the chance to conduct your own research over a ten week period.

A limited number of National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) studentships are available for home and EU students on this course.

How we teach

Learning Environment

The iSpace is an open plan, social learning area for students. It has display facilities, open-access PCs and bookable partitioned group work areas. The Photographic History and Practice MA is uniquely focused on the social, cultural and material histories of photography. You will explore photographic history through primary source materials, including negatives, photographs, technical apparatus, ephemera and manuscripts, as well as new developments in digital research under the guidance of internationally recognised scholars, practitioners, and museum professionals.

The programme offers you outstanding industry links with major collections including the National Media Museum, Birmingham City Library and the Pitt Rivers Museum. It is aimed at those from a variety of disciplines including conservationists, archivists, historians of science and from various fields of visual studies; such as visual anthropology, photography or art history. Working closely with programme staff, you will enhance your handling skills, research methods, writing and public speaking that will equip you for a wide range of careers or for further study.

You will learn in a variety of different formats including lectures, workshops, tutorials and seminars, as well as group activities. The course is underpinned by an innovative wiki environment that is a space for sharing and collaboration between students and tutors, as well as for presentation of content and communication.

You will also attend a week-long archival residency at one of a number of major internationally-recognised photographic archives. Throughout the programme there are visits to different types of museums, libraries and archives that engage photographic history.
