Programme structure

The MSc in Diabetes is a 12 month, full time programme. The programme is made up of eight compulsory courses, two are of 20 credits (one in each semester) and 6 are of 10 credits (four in the first semester and 2 in the second semester). In addition, students will select two optional 10 credit courses from a choice of six in the second semester. A dissertation/research project of 60 credits is undertaken to fulfil the requirements of a Masters degree. The taught courses will be undertaken in the period October to March during the academic session, with the dissertation commencing in June with submission in mid August.

Dissertation

To fulfil the requirements of a Masters degree, students must undertake an independent piece of research in the area of diabetes under the supervision of a project supervisor. Projects may take a number of different formats including a literature review, meta-analysis, data audit or secondary analysis, laboratory-based project, clinical/human volunteer based investigation. The student must then submit a report demonstrating an in-depth, critical understanding and evaluation of the project and deliver an oral presentation summarising their project.

Career prospects

Graduates may wish to pursue a career in diabetes clinical research entering clinical translational diabetes research or commercial industrial research. Other opportunities for diabetes specialists are available in education, public health and professions allied to medicine. The course puts assessment at the heart of learning by using clinical scenarios to facilitate problem-solving, critical analysis and evidence-based care. The scenarios act as both the focus for learning and assessment thus embedding assessment within the learning process.

Each of the 6 modules have the same assessment format. Due to the online nature of the course, students are expected to login and participate in the course regularly throughout the module (ideally on a daily basis).

Students are split into groups of 10-15 students and are assigned a dedicated expert tutor who:

Monitors, assesses and marks each student throughout the module.

Students are expected in the first 8 weeks to interact with their tutor on a weekly basis. Students select a specific project and submit a project summary/proposal (approximately 1500 words).

Once the proposal has been approved, the professional project (10,500 words) itself is then completed through online guidance and supervision offered by the tutor. The student and tutor will interact regularly (weekly) on the dedicated students/tutor discussion area or through any other means of communication deemed appropriate by both parties (telephone/SKYPE/email). Note of any verbal communication with the tutor is recorded on the student's journal by the student.

Diabetes is a disease that is on the increase worldwide. The demands on HCPs are rising at an alarming rate and HCPs need the education basis to provide competent appropriate care.

The programme takes a multi-disciplinary approach to the study of diabetes, allowing integration of key discipline areas in the understanding of the biology of the disease, its diagnosis and the understanding of the complications of diabetes, their prevention and management. It emphasises the importance of research and development in the subject area and exposes you to the latest advances in the understanding of health and disease; equipping you with the competencies to take part in active research.

This module will address the terminology and methodologies used in epidemiology and research studies, and you will learn how to interpret graphical and other statistical data such as Kaplan-Meier Curves, Forrest Plots and Meta-analyses. You will develop an understanding of the importance of evidence based practice and how to apply it within a clinical setting.

Module 2: Professional Project or Independent Prescribing Module:
- Professional Project
This modules aims to develop an ability to critically evaluate areas of professional practice of your choice and develop skills in independent research and study. You will produce a report of 12000 words which will include a project proposal of 1,500 words and the remaining 10,500 words will consist of a literature review and an evidence appraisal, clinical or organisational practice audit. Health Psychology is developing rapidly in the UK, across Europe and internationally in response to the increase in non-communicable diseases, such as diabetes and obesity. There is recognised need for a psychological approach to managing lifestyle choices and healthcare delivery to address the impact on health.

- Purpose -

This course is accredited by the British Psychological Society (BPS) and provides stage one of the professional training in Health Psychology. The course is intended for graduate students who wish to pursue professional careers in Psychology, and who seek to enhance their knowledge, skills and awareness of its applications to health and illness.

Course Benefits

You'll undertake a four to six-week placement either in the UK or abroad. It's an opportunity to gain significant work experience in areas such as food product development, weight loss and healthy lifestyles, and consultancy in either the private, public or charity sector. You'll also have access to our state-of-the-art biomedical science laboratories, clinical skills suite and kitchens, which will allow you to hone your practical skills further.

You'll be taught by an experienced team of professionals including Professor Pinki Sahota, an expert in childhood nutrition and obesity with 17 years' experience in the NHS, and Professor Alan White, Chair of the Board of Trustees for the Men's Health Forum.

You'll also hear from other leading professionals in the field as we host regular guest speakers from nutritional practice, the food industry, public health departments, hospital settings and research.

Core Modules

Enterprise in Public Health Nutrition
A population and lifespan based approach to the nutritional needs of individuals and communities, and contemporary issues influencing these.

Food Systems and Policy
Study the food systems currently operating across the food chain in agriculture, processing, distribution, retailing and food service. We will increase your awareness of the properties and behaviour of food, and how various systems are managed and operated.

Lifestyle Disease and Social Context
Examine lifestyle conditions such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes and obesity and analyse the health, psychosocial, cultural and socioeconomic determinants associated with prevalence.

Nutrition Advances in Practice
Explore the theory and principles of human nutrition. You'll focus on integration of nutritional science, clinical science, and food science. Alongside theory, you will develop skills to critically evaluate and integrate current research.

Nutrition Epidemiology
Examine the role of nutrition in the aetiology and trends of nutrition-related diseases. You'll look at the strengths and weaknesses of nutritional epidemiological methods, design concepts and application of appropriate statistical methods.

Research and Practice Development
An opportunity to undertake a small scale piece of research and / or development that supports your health-related practice within nutrition.

Research Methods in Health and Wellbeing
Develop both theoretical and practical skills that you will use in your dissertation module.

Nutritional Placement
A four to six week work experience placement taking place either in the UK or abroad over the summer.

Recently there has been a significant rise in diet-related illnesses around the globe, such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, certain cancers and cardiovascular disease. Poor nutrition is causing increasing public health problems in all sectors and ages, especially among the young and the elderly. On the other hand, in some areas of the world deficiency diseases and malnutrition are common.

A key focus of this course is examining the provision of food and nutrients to the body to facilitate optimum physical and mental development and maintenance of health throughout a lifetime. It also emphasises the specific problems of global nutrition and the public health implications.

Teaching and learning

Teaching is organised on a module-credit basis, with each module involving approximately 200 hours of student input and approximately 36 hours of staff contact, normally delivered through three hours' teaching each week for 12 weeks. Learning methods include lectures, directed reading, workshops, seminars, practical and project work. The research project will be supervised on a one-to-one basis.

Each module is assessed individually, generally on the quality of written or design work, and to some extent on verbal presentations. Assessment methods may include essays, seminar papers, formal written examinations, in-class tests, project work, design and verbal presentations, workshops, simulations, and practical exercises.

Teaching staff are drawn primarily from the Department of Sport and Health Sciences, but will include visiting speakers from business and industry, local government, consultancies, research bodies and other universities.

The Functional Food Centre is an internationally-renowned research group consisting of visiting professors, fellows, research assistants and PhD students, who are all researching nutrition and food topics.

This postgraduate course in Nutrition and Food Sciences consists of core modules in advanced human nutrition and applied food sciences as well as advanced research methods and a research project. A choice of options allows for specialism in nutrition and food law.

MSc Nutrition and Food Science requires you take nine modules in total, all at Level 7. The modules will be taken through a combination of single semester and double semester delivery. The triple research project module will be undertaken during Semesters 2 and 3.

Research

Sport and exercise science research occurs within the world-leading Applied Sports Technology Exercise Medicine (A-STEM) Research Centre.

Significant research in diabetes and health as well as sedentary behaviour, physical activity, fitness, fundamental movement skills in childhood obesity is undertaken by a number of clinical exercise science staff.

Our elite sport performance group is leading a project supported by the European Regional Development Fund through the Welsh Government to position Wales at the forefront of Science, Technology and Medicine in elite sport and to promote its wider application in health and education. This project represents a unique collaboration of leading Welsh academics, businesses and sport, with the overall objective of enhancing their respective performances.

Fundamental links integrating engineering and sport and exercise science research are being developed by the Sports Visualisation Group who analyse video material to rapidly produce data for immediate analysis of sports performance. Recently the Engineering Behaviour Analytics in Sport and Exercise (E-BASE) research group was set up to investigate the use of advanced sensor and processing technology to quantify training and activity in sport and clinical populations respectively.

We have international research links and projects with universities in Southern and Eastern Europe, Scandinavia, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, USE, Italy and Austria.
