Programme description

Design Informatics combines Data Science with Design Thinking in a context of critical enquiry and speculation. We build a value-aware, reflective practice at the interface between data and society by combining theory and research with an open-ended process of making and hacking.

Human activity is being constantly shaped by the flow of data and the intelligences that process it, moving towards an algorithmically mediated society. Design Informatics asks how we can create products and services within this world, that learn and evolve, that are contextualised and humane. Beyond that, it asks questions about what things we should create, speculating about the different futures we might be building and the values behind them.

The central premise is that data is a medium for design: by shaping data, we shape the world around us. Data Science provides the groundwork for this, with Design Thinking underpinning reflective research through design. You will use this in working with the internet of things and physical computing, machine learning, speech and language technology, usable privacy and security, data ethics, blockchain technologies. You will connect technology with society, health, architecture, fashion, bio-design, craft, finance, tourism, and a host of other real world contexts, through case studies, individual, and collaborative projects. You will understand user experience in the wider socio-cultural context, through an agile programme of hacking, making and materialising new products and services.

Programme structure

Please be aware that the structure of the programme may change.

Throughout the programme, you will be working both individually and in teams of designers and computer scientists. Everyone will have to write code during the course, and everyone will have to make physical objects. Several courses, including the dissertation, will involve presenting the artefact, product, service, or interactive experience that you have created to the general public in a show.

In the first year, you will study:

  • Design Informatics: Histories and Futures
  • Data Science for Design (compulsory for MA/MFA, strongly recommended for MSc/ Advanced MSc)
  • Case Studies in Design Informatics 1
  • Design with Data
  • Design Informatics Project
  • 20 credits of elective courses

In Design with Data and Design Informatics Project, you are likely to work with an external partner, such as the Royal Bank of Scotland, Amazon, Edinburgh City Council, Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh or the National Museum of Scotland.

MSc and MA students then undertake a dissertation in the summer before graduation.

MFA and Advanced MSc students take a summer placement with a relevant digital organisation then return for a second year of study, comprising:

  • Case Studies in Design Informatics 2
  • 60 credits of elective courses
  • A dissertation

Elective courses are drawn from the Masters Programmes of the School of Informatics, Edinburgh College of Art, and Philosophy, Psychology, and Language Sciences. Courses are typically 10 or 20 credits.

On this programme you will learn how to build computational systems as well as the principles of design thinking and making.

Design Informatics: designing with data can be explored in most specialist areas of Informatics, but Design Informatics emphasises entrepreneurial product development.

The MRes Informatics programme prepares graduates for further research study for a PhD or a research-oriented career in industry. Most students in this programme already have a career as a business analyst, systems analyst, consultant, IT project manager, etc, and undertake this programme in order to add solid research skills to their portfolio.

Previous graduates of this programme have gone on to pursue a PhD or are now engaged in careers in the informatics field that require strong research skills.

Successful completion of the optional module Business Domain and Requirements Analysis can lead to the BCS Professional Certificate in Business Analysis Practice.

Technology is becoming closely interwoven into everyday life. How we create and design these interactions is crucial to their success and the positive impact they have on our lives. This understanding forms the core of the IDEA program’s design philosophy: technology that is designed to delight its users.

We aim to infuse the latest technological innovation with a human-centred design thinking to solve complex problems. The IDEA program promotes a creative and critical approach, within the framework of research-driven interaction design and user experience methodologies. The result is an understanding of how to design interactive products, services and systems that will have lasting cultural and commercial importance.

In a foundation first semester, you will develop the essential industry knowledge and skills for working as an interaction or user experience designer, at ease with web and mobile applications. Once you have these core skills in human-centred design thinking, web/mobile interface design and software programming, you are trained to analyse and evaluate their application in a range of design contexts. This evaluative approach is what enables IDEA students to create meaningful interactive experiences that will become ubiquitous parts of our everyday life.

In the second semester, you will engage in design studio projects to extend these skills, both conceptually and technically. We offer a studio-based teaching environment in which you work individually or in teams to creatively solve design challenges. You will learn to design across multiple platforms and scales - from natural, tangible and wearable user interfaces to interactive architecture, creative robotics and urban informatics. Your ideas may even become the basis of prototype products, patents or start-up services.

You can adapt this program to suit your interests and passions by taking electives from other faculties. You will also build a compelling design portfolio showcasing not only your design skills but also your understanding of how best to convey the user experience of new products and services.

The course culminates in a capstone research project, industry internship or graduation design project. The Faculty draws on industry and alumni contacts to enable opportunities to build your professional network. These factors combine to position you as a well-connected creative industry specialist with expertise across the strategic, creative and technical domains.

The course is timetabled to suit your busy schedule. Subjects are run either in the evening or in intensive mode (a block series of Fridays and Saturdays). You can also study part-time. The course has embedded qualifications, enabling you to graduate after the foundation first semester with a Graduate Certificate, or continue on to Graduate Diploma or Masters level.

Product Design at Edinburgh College of Art (ECA) centres on the exploration of problem spaces, understanding that much of what designers do is re-define and re-interpret products and their contexts enabling people to lead engaged, productive and meaningful lives.

Product design is a broad discipline, and at the University of Edinburgh we understand our discipline through a ethnomethodological lens. At the heart of our research programme is people; particularly those who currently struggle with existing objects in identified circumstances. We embrace a variety of approaches to people-centred design practice including participatory action research; affective design; design for disruption and inclusive design. The core to our approach is to speculate and build preferred futures, based on design-led evidence constructed through observation and engagement with others. Our aim is to understand the agency of objects and configure intended impacts on communities of people moving through and across various services and systems.

As a student on programme, you will join a vibrant, international community of creative practitioners and researchers. Members of the academic team are involved in a variety of research interests relevant to design production, maintaining strong partnerships with academics from across the University in allied disciplines such as engineering, informatics, anthropology, sociology, health and business.

Programme structure

There are two semesters in your first year, each providing the opportunity to engage three courses: one core requirement, and two elective options from supporting programmes relevant to the ethos of the programme.

Core courses foster exploration and development of ethnomethodological approaches to product design research and development, with a strong emphasis on action research, ethnographic observation, participation and prototyping, driven through a strong iterative approach to practice.

One-year MA degree

If you choose to pursue the one year MA degree, you will engage your dissertation in the summer period following the first year of study, focusing on the development of an individual project which emphasises product theory in context.

Emphasis on the MA degree pathway is to prepare students with interests in design management, policy or direction, or pursuing further academic research programmes such as the PhD.

Two-year MFA degree (Under review for 2018 entry)

Students enrolled on the two year MFA degree demonstrate interest in pursuing a career as autonomous designers, often establishing their own studios of practice.

In Year 2 of the MFA, you will undertake an additional four courses, with a core component in semester 1 entitled "Incubator", which is designed to help develop your skills in researching, developing and delivering a practice-led thesis.

The MFA dissertation takes place in your final semester, and culminates in the presentation of a significant body of work presented in exhibition format, showcasing exceptional skills in making, prototyping and manufacturing of high-quality, proof of concept models which articulate your understanding of theory in practice through artefacts, images and text relevant to people-centred design.

Teaching and learning

All taught modules are delivered through a combination of lectures, online activities and interactive workshops and tutorials and are supported by the University's online learning environment.

Taught modules are generally assessed through a combination of coursework and examination where coursework is worth 30% of the final mark and the examination contributes 70%. Some elective modules are 100% coursework based (e.g. Information Architecture and Project Management). See the full programme specification for details.

The taught component of the MSc is worth 66.67% (eight 15-credit modules) and the independent research project is worth 33.33% (60 credits).

Upon successful completion of eight modules and the independent research project, you will be awarded 180 credits and a masters level qualification. Alternatively, if you do not complete the dissertation but have successfully completed eight modules you will be awarded 120 credits and a postgraduate diploma. Successful completion of four modules (60 credits) will lead to the award of a postgraduate certificate.

In order to accommodate the expected student profile of people currently working in the healthcare and/or the IT sectors who are looking to switch careers, the programme is offered on a part-time as well as a full-time basis. Flexibility is key for the targeted student demographic, particularly the clinicians, so entry in Semester A and Semester B has been incorporated into the programme design.

The MRes programme allows you to undertake a research project at Master's level which would be assessed via submission of a thesis and a viva voce.

You can set out to find the answer to a particular research question and will have the chance to delve more deeply into a subject area that you are passionate about.

Your research project will be developed in collaboration with our academic University staff who will provide you with specialist knowledge and supervisory input, while accessing BU's technical facilties and information resources.

You will also be part of BU's wider postgraduate community and have access to the suite of research, professional and personal training offered through the Doctoral College and your Academic faculty. 

We strongly encourage collaboration across specialisms, and an MRes provides an opportunity to work with supervisors from various backgrounds to deliver truly impactful research.

Established 25 years ago, the Laboratory for Foundations of Computer Science (LFCS) continues to lead the way in the development of mathematical models, theories and tools that probe the possibilities of computation and communication.

Our students benefit from being part of one of the largest and strongest groups of theoretical computer scientists in the world.

Our research is aimed at establishing deep understanding of computation in its many forms. Using advanced mathematical principles, we create theories and software tools allowing fundamental capabilities of computation to be explored, as well as designing languages that can be used to construct safe and effective programs.

Areas of interest within LFCS include verification, semantics, concurrency, process algebra, algorithms, logic and complexity.

While the results of our research can be applied to any one of a large number of diverse fields, biological modelling is of particular interest. Advances in experimental techniques mean that cell biologists need innovative tools and software to understand the vast quantities of data that are being generated.

Other areas where our research is applied include:

Training and support

The award-winning Informatics Forum is an international research facility for computing and related areas. It houses more than 400 research staff and students, providing office, meeting and social spaces.

Its spectacular atrium plays host to many events, from industry showcases and student hackathons to major research conferences.

What Will You Study and Future Prospects:

The main goal is to enable M.Sc. graduates to operate in the various activities related to safety in transport systems, logistics, and production, but also of the territory where they are located.

The course provides notions about:

• the risk assessment of local systems, and in particular the planning, design and management of both safety (protection against accidental events) and security (protection than intentional events);
• the evaluation in terms of cost/benefits of different design alternatives for risk mitigation in transport, logistics, and production systems;
• the planning and management of the mobility of people and goods, through the knowledge of the fundamental elements of transport and logistic systems, as well as the criteria to define the physical characteristics of isolated infrastructures a network of infrastructures, with particular reference to the relevant functions and interdependencies;
• the design and safe management of transport, logistic, and production systems, with reference to either the systems as a whole, and to the relevant single components, such as infrastructures, facilities, vehicles, equipment;
• the development and use of advanced methods to manage and optimize the performance and safety of road, rail, air and sea infrastructure and transport services, as well as their interactions in an intermodal framework, by means of the design and implementation of monitoring, regulation, and control systems via the most advanced technologies related to their specific disciplines;
• the analysis and evaluation of the externalities of transport and logistic systems, with explicit reference to the particular safety aspect and issues characterizing each phase of the mobility of people and goods, even within the production plants connected, and their interaction with surrounding environment.

The course is articulated into two alternative curricula:

1. TRANSPORT AND LOGISTICS: This curriculum concentrates on the problems related to design and manage the complex systems that realize a safe and effective mobility of passengers and freights.

2. INDUSTRIAL LOGISTICS AND PRODUCTION: This curriculum concentrates on the problems related to design and manage the complex systems that realize a safe and effective production plant internal logistics and management.

Entry Requirements:

Admission to the Master of Science in Safety Engineering for Transport, Logistics and Production is subject to the possession of specific curricular requirements and adequacy of personal preparation.

The access requirements are equivalent to those provided by the general educational objectives of all three-year university degree in classes of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Information Engineering, and Industrial Engineering. In fact, one of the following curricular requirements must be fulfilled:

• possession of a Bachelor, or a Master degree, or a five-year degree in classes of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Information Engineering, and Industrial Engineering, awarded by an Italian University, or equivalent qualifications;
• possession of a Bachelor, or a Master degree, or a five-year degree with at least 36 ECTS (“Base Courses”, e.g. Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Informatics) and at least 45 ECTS that pertain to the Engineering classes, awarded by an Italian University, or equivalent qualifications;
