The MA in Digital Media is unique in its combination of practical and theoretical approaches to contemporary media and technology.
The established and exciting degree is designed to help you understand digital transformations in media, culture and society and apply this understanding in practice, in the media and creative industries and in further research. You will be equipped with skills that can be applied to current and future developments in digital media, social media, computing and other aspects of technology.
The MA in Digital Media educates aspiring media practitioners and academics as well as early and mid-career professionals who seek to reflect on their roles in a structured and stimulating learning environment designed to give all students up-to-the-minute knowledge of digital media and the skills to apply that knowledge to future developments.
The MA offers two pathways:
Pathway 1 is a theory programme where you learn about developments in digital media and technology from a wide range of perspectives
Pathway 2 is a theory and practice programme where you can explore transformations in media, culture and society through the practice of contemporary digital communication. You will work with one or more of the following to create installations, apps and single- and multi-screen work that's responsive to the continually changing digital landscape:

The MA in Digital Media regularly attracts offers of work placements and internships. In the past these have come from Google, The Science Museum and N1creative.com. Our students have access to state-of-the-art facilities including well-equipped lecture and seminar rooms, exhibition spaces, computer facilities and digital media suites.
The department is also currently host to the renowned philosopher of media and technology, Bernard Stiegler and students will have access to his modulein Media Philosophy as well as priority access to the innovative and popular option After New Media. Designed to complement the MA in Digital Media, this course provides a framework for thinking about the current media environment as well as future forms of human and computer interaction.

MA Digital Media students have access to the pioneering option ‘After New Media’, currently a non-assessed online module which explores the themes of self mediation, ethical mediation and intelligent mediation, and develops a framework for thinking about 'life' after new media. As well as accessing a series of podcasts, students are offered reading groups and a masterclass with Professor Sarah Kember co-author of the book Life After New Media on which the course is based.

The MA in Digital Media offers an innovative interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary approach to contemporary technology and new media, drawing upon expertise in Media and Communication Studies.
The MA in Digital Media examines some of the key issues confronting twenty-first century global societies through a dynamic programme that combines theoretical and applied perspectives.
Digital Media students will be encouraged to apply media theory, political and social theory and research tools in analysing and understanding digital media. The MA in Digital Media explores key historical, policy and practice dimensions of new media as well as focusing on research methodologies for those undertaking research on digital media and technology.
The Digital Media course is split across the year. Students will take three modules in each academic semester (a total of six modules) and then complete a dissertation over the summer. The dissertation component allows you to write a 16,000 word dissertation, which will draw on issues and themes developed throughout the year.

This is a unique programme of study that addresses the growing need for professional education in digital technology applied to design, including its social, cultural and philosophical implications.
Based in a lively studio environment, the programme develops wide skills in digital techniques and a critical framework to appraise the application of these technologies to design.
The programme addresses the needs of practitioners, managers, decision-makers and educators who want to be informed by first-hand knowledge of the technical possibilities of digital technology and an awareness of social, cultural and business contexts.
Our programme is design and technology led and there are significant demands on our students to create innovative work across a range of creative contexts including visual design, user interface and experience, interactive media, mobile web applications, animation, gaming and virtual environments.
Teaching is through a combination of lectures, seminars, tutorials, practical sessions and studios. Projects encourage original thinking and independent achievement within a framework of team-working and creative ability.
The prospects for employment are diverse. Recent graduates are now working in multimedia and web design for architectural and urban design practices, computer system design and management, and tertiary-level teaching. The programme is also ideal if you are considering continuing on to advanced research at a doctoral level.
The recent growth in new media management has seen a rise in and demand for skilled creative media management professionals, who are not only confident in deploying media technologies and platforms but also in management practices, methods and experience to drive forward the latest media advances.
Your studies are based in our modern media labs in the Department of Media Arts and Communication. Many of our academic staff bring industry experience to their teaching. The course also includes a regular programme of industry speakers and client based projects, as well as a foundation for those wishing to move into media management roles within organisations, recognise existing skills and knowledge through a formal qualification, or start their own media business.
The course is made up of eight taught modules, plus a major linked project where you could work with or within an organisation. All modules are mandatory and have been tailored to match the in demand skills and experience of the creative media industry. The vast majority of teaching is in small groups (typically less than 20) allowing for bespoke delivery.
Students will gain an understanding of how to exploit the latest digital media technologies and platforms, across interactive, social and mobile content, as well as the management of digital media businesses, organisations and teams. The course uses industry-standard software and hardware tools such as Adobe and Apple software in well-equipped media studios and associated lab facilities. The course is designed to develop business awareness, entrepreneurial skills, management confidence and a portfolio of industry experience through client based media projects, industry networking and digital media industry insight.
You study a range of modules designed to prepare you for real world challenges. Typical projects may include • management of communication channels for promotion and marketing • creation of digital marketing campaigns • management of software solutions to engage audiences • management of knowledge dissemination across organisations • mobile media, social media and app design • insight into industry best practice • management of media people and teams • entrepreneurship and business skills.
The course has been designed in conjunction with industry professionals and aims to give you real world experience through working on live client briefs. You also work with the award winning Venture Matrix to enhance your employability and enterprise skills. Assessment is based primarily on individual project work, as well as team based projects and presentations. These projects allow students to access industry, network and build a portfolio of client based work.
Work based learning is also encouraged as part of the degree. Module teams will support students who wish to apply their studies directly to the work place. The Digital Media Management Project module in particular allows students to work with or within organisations on projects to enhance a company or organisation.
A number of industry days and events are also held on campus and within the Sheffield Cultural Industries Quarter where students can take part in workshops, talks, and exhibitions held by creative media industry representatives, professionals, and companies/ organisations. These activities give a window to the world of work and opportunities that lie ahead. They provide students with direct access to industry and exposure to opportunities within the industry.
The creative industries sector is vibrant, fast growing and brings immense benefit to developed economies. In the UK alone, the creative industries are worth over £77 billion a year and account for 5% of the economy, with exports of over £17 billion per annum. Skilled digital media management professionals are in demand to meet this phenomenal growth.

Great design ideas can change the world. With human and user-centred design at the heart of this internationally regarded Masters programme, you’ll develop research and practice-based design solutions to respond to a demanding industry and rapidly changing society.
Whether your background is in design or in another discipline, you’ll develop, test and evaluate innovative design solutions in real-life scenarios. At the top of our research facilities we have the world’s most sophisticated mobile eye-tracking glasses, which are used to understand how users interact with design (see more information at http://www.tobiipro.com). Other excellent research facilities are our EEG equipment (electroencephalography) to understand how users interact with the world, and our colour analysis/prediction lab.
We also house the M&S Company Archive including documents, advertising, photos, films, clothing and merchandise from throughout Marks & Spencer’s history. ULITA, an archive of international textiles, is also housed on campus and collects, preserves and documents textiles and related areas from around the world. You can make appointments to view items, but it also has an online catalogue where you can explore the major collections.
You’ll also be able to develop your practice in well-equipped studios and purpose-built computer clusters so that you can build your skills on both PC and Mac. There is also a computer-aided design (CAD) suite with access to the latest design software, and some of the latest design technology, such as digital printing, screen printing, 3D printing, and laser cutting.
In Semester 1 you’ll study a set of compulsory modules that will allow you to develop a range of research, conceptual and practical design skills and tools to lay the foundations for the rest of the programme. You’ll have the chance to learn through case studies, practical exercises and work on briefs encompassing all specialisms offered.
In Semester 2 you’ll have a choice of optional modules that focus on current trends in design practice and research. These optional modules will give you the opportunity to work on live projects from industry and/or live research projects being conducted in the School of Design. You’ll work on group and/or individual projects to explore more specific and advanced skills and tools in your areas of interest.
In Semester 2 you’ll also choose and develop a specialist project in which the tools and skills learnt in Semester 1 are applied. Projects can be developed in a wide range of topics that suit your interests and career ambitions. These include: Branding Design, Digital and Interactive Design, Information Design, Instructional Design, Graphic and Visual Communication Design, Service Design, and Typographic Design.
In Semester 3 you can choose one of two pathways: 1) Continue with your specialist design project, develop it at a professional level and apply it in a real-life context (with suitable users) for evaluation; 2) Produce an independent research dissertation based around a relevant field or topic within the specialisms offered.
In addition to the compulsory modules listed below, for your final project you will choose to do either: - Design Prototyping and Evaluation (40 credits) or - Design Dissertation (40 credits).
You will select two modules from the list of optional modules below.
You’ll be taught and guided by a diverse team of staff who are leaders in their fields, with a wide variety of research interests and years of experience as design practitioners.
We use a range of teaching and learning methods so you can benefit from their expertise. These may include lectures, seminars, tutorials, workshops, group learning and meetings with your tutor or supervisor. However, independent study is crucial to this degree, as it allows you to develop your skills and explore your own ideas.
Depending on the modules you choose you’ll be assessed by different methods. They’ll include individual and group projects, project proposals and reports, presentations and reflective reports.
This programme will equip you with a range of design skills using different media, as well as allowing you to hone your specialist skills in an area of your choice. It will also equip you with advanced skills in research, analysis, teamwork, presentation and communication that will be valuable in a range of careers.
You’ll be well prepared for a career in design practice. You can set up your own freelance business or take up a key position in a design studio, agency or organisation.
You can also work in cross-disciplinary fields applying your design skills to business, marketing, applied psychology, healthcare communication, retail, government, the public or private sector, etc.
Many of our students also choose to continue benefiting from our cutting-edge and frontier research by doing a PhD and following a research and/or academic career.

Digital animation provides the eye-catching special effects in the 21st century's favourite films and television shows; 3D design is also essential to everyday work in everything from computer games development, online virtual world development and industrial design to marketing, product design and architecture.

3D design at postgraduate level includes 3D modelling, animation, video and motion graphics. Modules are designed to meet current industrial needs, technology and practice.
The programme offers four specialist pathways; Virtual Environments; Architecture; Computer Games and Visual Effects.
There are six taught modules, each module is taught over a twelve week period. Each week consists offormal lectures, lab work, tutorials and private study. On satisfactory completion of the modules,you proceed to a major project and submit a final dissertation for examination. This is completed overa three month period following the taught modules.
Digital Media Technology and Development
An introduction to digital media hardware and software tools, and methods of production and organisation. The student will learn 3D visualisation and animation techniques using the latest 3D software applications.
Digital Video and Motion Graphics
Develop skills and practical knowledge of digital video/film productiontechniques and the association of digital motion graphics media production.Application of creative technique will cover elective areas such as short filmproduction, documentary production, 3D animation composition, titlesequence generation and abstract motion graphics effects.
Digital Media Publishing and Commercialisation
Progress the work of the Digital Media Technology and Development module of Trimester A. The intention is to provide a full understanding of the subject material relevant to the development of a broadcast level digital media project.
Digital Portfolio and Industrial Production Techniques
This module will provide practical knowledge of digital media publishing techniques suitable for the production of portfolio media. Students will investigateand demonstrate knowledge of a range of digital media tools and techniques for the promotion of skills within a portfoliopresentation. Critical analysis of various types of digital media delivery platforms,copyright issues, and digital marketingstrategies will be covered. This modulewill also provide an overview of how 3Dmodelling and animation fits within the context of the particular industry sectorwhich is relevant to the students areaof specialisation.
Research and Project Methods
This module aims to provide students with the background knowledge and skills that, in combination with the technical skills acquired in other taught modules, will enable them to carry an MSc dissertation through to a successful conclusion. Students will study all aspects of the processes underlying both capstone projects and research projects, and will relate these to available tools, ethical considerations and professional issues.
The Project acts as a vehicle for extendingthe knowledge and understanding of thestudent and the technical community insome specialist technical area. It serves,through its length, complexity andrigour, as a suitable vehicle for extending,in the student, a range of personal,interpersonal and communication skills.In addition, it serves to develop andextend a range of high-level thinkingskills, including analysing and synthesisingskills and affords the opportunity for thestudent to demonstrate initiative andcreativity in a major piece of technologicalwork. The student has the option of awritten dissertation or a dissertationby film.
Modules are assessed by both examination and coursework (sometimes known as continual assessment) depending on the requirements of individual modules.
As a graduate of the 3D Design for Virtual Environments programme, you'll bring a specialised skill set and needed expertise to any design-related role. A background in 3D design is especially important for a design career in advertising, communication, publishing or online marketing. You'll be a competitive candidate for these design roles and more.
Smartphones and social media, digital networks and big data, gamification and mobile platforms – new media continue to change the way we live, work and communicate. This programme interrogates the impact of digital technologies on individuals and society, and provides you with the skills and knowledge to be able to think critically and creatively about new media.
Working both individually and in teams, you will learn about diverse digital media techniques and processes, including coding and hacking, web design, mapping and visualisation, scraping and mining, interactive narratives, animation, digital ethnography, action research, prototyping and iterative design, representation, and more. Through an applied, hands-on approach, you will gain an understanding of the social, cultural and economic roles of new media, and explore what it is like to work in the new media industries.
With a range of optional modules to choose from, you will also be able to expand your knowledge into areas such as multimedia journalism, cinema and photography, political and promotional communication, feminism and the media, and many more. Taught by expert practitioners and researchers, you will gain the knowledge and skills to thrive in this dynamic, fast-paced sector.Our School has a range of fantastic facilities to support your studies. The 58-seat Phil Taylor Cinema is equipped with Dolby Digital sound and high-definition projection facilities, as well as projectors for 16mm and 35mm film.
You can also work on your own projects in our 44 editing suites, equipped with Avid Media Composer editing software and Adobe Creative Cloud. The fully equipped TV studio also has a large green screen area, lighting and photo-flash facilities. We also have a track and dolly, sliders, Glidecam and various cranes, and you’ll have access to a new photographic dark room.
We also run a loans service where you can borrow a range of HD digital camcorders and various Canon stills cameras to help with your project work.
In each semester you’ll study core modules that build your knowledge of new media contexts and practice. You’ll consider the relationship between new media and contemporary culture and the interactive forms and practices that are emerging. Then you’ll gain practical production, project management and critical skills and respond to new media briefs in collaborative projects.
You’ll then have the chance to broaden your approach with your choice of optional modules, from photography and cinematics to political communication, television narratives and public relations in society.
To demonstrate the skills you’ve gained, you’ll also undertake a major independent project. You can choose to submit a dissertation and take classes on research methods throughout the year, or you can work on a sustained, practical new media project with a written element.
If you choose to study part-time, you’ll complete the MA over two years, instead of one, taking fewer modules each year.

You’ll be taught in a mixture of practical workshops, lectures and small group seminars which allow you to discuss your reading and present some of your research to other students. Independent study is also crucial to this degree, allowing you to practice your skills and deepen your knowledge.
We also use a range of assessment methods, depending on the modules you choose. They’re likely to include practical projects, essays, reports, group and individual presentations and case studies among others.
This programme is still relatively new, and digital media are rapidly growing, evolving and expanding.
People with high-level production and project management skills in new media will be in high demand for decades to come, and this programme will equip you with the knowledge and skills to thrive in a wide – and rapidly expanding – range of careers in new media practice.
These could include digital marketing, animation, web design and development, social media, analytics, PR and consultancy among others. You’ll also be well prepared for future research in this young and fast-changing field.
