Financial engineering involves the creation of financial products that are aimed specifically at the needs of investors, rather than the conventional approach of defining assets on the basis of borrowers' requirements. Central to Financial Engineering are relative value (sometimes called arbitrage) trading strategies and the structuring of financial products, and the closely associated process of securitisation. Structuring involves the transformation of cash flows derived from an asset and improving the risk profile of the structured product. The contemporary derivative markets are driven by the process structuring, both in terms of transforming cash flows through “swaps” and credit enhancement through credit derivatives.

The programme aims to develop the skills and knowledge required by the modern investment and asset management industry where relative value trading strategies and structuring dominate. The emphasis is on developing a range of practical skills rather than develop an abstract "theory of everything". This reflects the need for practitioners to be able to employ different techniques in the ever changing world of contemporary finance.

The material is based substantially on the PRIMIA syllabus for risk management and the Actuarial Profession’s Specialist Technical (ST) syllabus to value and manage the risks associated with a portfolios of derivatives.

The taught component of the degree makes up 120 credits. There are seven mandatory courses leading to 75 credits and consisting of:

• Enterprise Risk Management (15 credits, Semesters 1) - a comprehensive treatment of Financial Risk Management focusing on quantitative aspects.

• Derivative Markets and Pricing (15 credits, Semester 1) - an introduction to derivative markets and how derivative products are priced.

• Modelling and Tools (15 credits, Semester 2) - the fundamental techniques of deterministic and probabilistic mathematical modelling.

• Financial Engineering (15 credits, Semester 2) - provides a thorough grounding in the mathematics underpinning Financial Engineering. Topics include non-standard derivatives, securitisation and structuring, modelling interest rates (including Libor Market Models and valuing swaptions) and contemporary issues in asset management (relative value and pairs trading strategies).

• Credit Risk Modelling (15 credits, Semester 2) - a detailed treatment of the mathematics underpinning Basel Accord on banking supervision and Solvency II for insurance.

Students will also choose three of the following five optional courses leading to a further 45 credits

• Statistical Methods (15 credits, Semester 1) - a foundation course in probability and statistics.

• Financial markets (15 credits, Semester 1) - an introduction to the financial markets.

• Time Series Analysis and Financial Econometrics (15 credits, Semester 2) - analysis and modelling of financial data.

In particular it will introduce the probability and stochastics often not included in standard mathematics degrees.

Following the Financial Crisis of 2007-2009 there has been a shift in the practice of mathematical finance. The emphasis is now on possessing a broad range of skills that can be applied to practical problems. The aim is to understand, both quantitatively and qualitatively, risks and uncertainty involved.

The MSc focuses on practical computational and applied mathematics aspects of finance and uncertainty, and students graduating from the programme will have excellent employment prospects that are not restricted to any one narrow sector of financial services.

We have a practical applied approach to the material. This will provide you with relevant and modern skills, in demand in the UK and internationally, relating to structured finance.

The programme, which is part of the Maxwell Institute for Mathematical Sciences, the joint research institute of mathematical sciences at the University of Edinburgh and Heriot-Watt University, provides an intensive training in the mathematical ideas and tools vital to the finance industry. Overview

The MSc Finance programme has been a highly successful programme, with many of its graduates attaining high-level positions in major financial institutions. Furthermore, several of its graduates have gone on to complete PhDs in Finance, Economics and Accountancy.

The degree is an intensive 9-month programme with six taught modules and a dissertation. Most of the modules are taught by members of faculty, but in order to further enhance the quality of the programme, we have two visiting professors who teach intensive one-week courses. Professor Stephen Hall (Imperial College, London) teaches on the Research Methods in Finance module. Professor Lawrence White (University of Missouri) teaches the Money and Banking module.

Financial Strategy
This module provides students with the basic applied microeconomic skills required for a career in modern financial markets. Typical topics include: basic consumer choice theory, including intertemporal choice and choice under uncertainty; financial market problems associated with asymmetric information; insurance contracts, and investor signalling and screening.

Research Methods in Finance
This module is designed to give students both theoretical and practical experience of statistical and econometric techniques. The module will acquaint students with a range of modern econometric techniques, which are an essential part of modern advanced empirical research.

Corporate Finance
The aim of this module is to familiarise students with the primary theoretical and empirical issues confronting the modern corporation when making decisions about investment, capital structure, dividends and mergers.

January – April

International Finance
This module is designed to develop a rigorous understanding of international financial markets. Emphasis is placed on the theoretical basis for pricing such assets as forward exchange rates. Recent international monetary events such as the establishment of the euro are studied extensively.

Options, Futures and Other Derivative Securities
This module provides students with a rigorous theoretical understanding of derivative instruments. The course includes the following topics: the theory of futures markets; futures contract pricing; pricing of interest rate and stock index futures; the theory of option pricing.

Money and Banking
This module provides students with an understanding of modern banking and other financial institutions. The emphasis is placed on policy issues such as: the regulation of financial institutions; the determination of the value and quantity of both private and fiat money; the proper role of central banking, government macroeconomic policies, affecting output and employment; and fixed verses floating exchange rates.

April – June

Students are assigned supervisors and have to undertake an original piece of empirical finance research. Examples of topics researched by past students include: mergers, the IPO market, corporate governance, capital structure, dividends, cre dit unions, foreign exchange markets, financial market behaviour, option and futures pricing, bank regulation and financial history.

Research Methods in Finance

Corporate Finance
The aim of this module is to familiarise students with the primary theoretical and empirical issues confronting the modern corporation when making decisions about investment, capital structure, dividends and mergers.

Accounting and Capital Markets
This module integrates material in the accounting and securities valuation module with investment management decision making. The main areas covered include the theoretical economic underpinnings of capital markets, the role of firms’ disclosure in equity markets, the role of information intermediaries, value investing, and market microstructure.

Performance Management and Governance
The module explores the role and application of strategic performance management and governance in organisations. Theoretical and practical performance management and governance issues will be examined in both businesses and not-for profit organizations (NFPOs) primarily through the use of published research papers. Through this, the usefulness of a variety of research methods will be examined, including qualitative research utilising case studies and interviews.

Plus a choice of ONE of the following modules:

The main purpose of this course is to understand concepts, principles, and tools for the analysis and valuation of derivative securities such as Forwards, Futures, Swaps, and Options, which are being applied in modern corporate finance, investments, and risk management for financial institutions and enterprises. Students also will learn the application of these derivatives for financial and enterprise risk management and decision making.
Career relevance:
The basic knowledge of derivatives is necessary to understand modern finance and modern corporate management in both financial and non-financial institutions. The knowledge would be useful for managers of financial product development, fund managers, and analysts in financial institutions. The knowledge would also be useful for financial officers and risk management officers in various enterprises. Application of derivatives such as real options is also useful for managers who are decision makers. You will find how the tools and concepts are useful more broadly in finance and corporate management.
Course Context or Rationalization:
Knowledge and skills related to derivative securities would allow you to pursue many goals, which cannot be achieved only through the study of traditional securities, in investments, risk management, and management of corporations. In other words, you will extend your
knowledge of corporate finance, investments, and portfolio management into the advanced stage. This course requires basic knowledge of traditional securities such as stocks and bonds, and corporate finance, although there is no specific prerequisite course. Additionally, the derivatives market aims to provide the basic knowledge and skill in order to understand Debt Security Market (FIN4300) and Risk Management (FIN4200). Securitization, which will be taught 2 in Debt Security Market, is a sophisticated type of derivatives. Also derivatives are widely used in order to achieve both financial and enterprise risk management. Understanding the pricing of derivatives also helps to understand the insurance pricing.
Delivery methods:
Course materials consist of cases, book chapters, and various articles, exercise problem sets and homework assignments, and a final examination at the end of the term. The final is a take-home examination. Most course work is quantitative. The level of students understanding will be checked by means of case analysis, assignments, and scheduled presentations throughout the term. Full preparation and attendance are both required for all of the scheduled sessions in this course. All students are expected to be actively involved in class discussion, especially, in case discussion.

Programme objectives

PROGRAMME OVERVIEW

This programme is attuned to the current needs of investment and finance professionals: it combines a rigorous theoretical approach to investment management with the practical tools and opportunities to solve real-life investment problems.

You will learn the analytical, decision-making, problem-solving, risk mitigation and technical financial skills needed to succeed in the field. On graduation, you will have mastered each stage of the investment management process and be able to make informed decisions within that context.

Our compulsory modules deliver a fundamental understanding of investment management concepts, while optional modules allow you to tailor your learning based on your interests or career path. We also incorporate use of our Bloomberg Lab into the programme and you should obtain a Bloomberg Market Competency certificate during their studies.

As the focus of the programme is to prepare you for a career in investment the use of Bloomberg is incorporated into the programme. There is also an opportunity to undertake a preparation course for CFA Level 1 exams once Semester 2 teaching has finished.

EDUCATIONAL AIMS OF THE PROGRAMME

The need for an Investment Management programme arises from the continuing global demand for professionals working in the fields of investment management, investment banking, pension funds, insurance companies and alternative investment partnerships (such as hedge funds, private equity and sovereign wealth funds).

The aim of the programme is to provide students with the array of skills required to operate successfully in an investment management or investment analysis role within the finance industry or to pursue further academic study within the subject area.

The programme will provide a high quality education that is current, intellectually rigorous and attuned to the needs of investment and finance professionals. It provides the theoretical underpinning and the practical skills that such professionals need in order to cope with an increasingly complex global financial environment.

It also provides a valuable foundation for those considering continuing their academic studies in the field of applied finance, accounting and banking to PhD level. The programme provides students with a basis for developing their own approach to learning and personal development through a combination of compulsory and optional modules that are united by a focus on dialogue between theory and practice.

The compulsory modules provide a rigorous grounding in theory plus the quantitative techniques necessary to undertake empirical investigations and form balanced evaluations of practice. The optional modules offer students the opportunity to focus their study and to specialise in areas that are of particular interest to them and their future career needs.
