Overview

The Graduate Entry Medicine course is delivered by the University of Nottingham in partnership with Derby Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, and is based in a purpose built medical school on the Royal Derby Hospital’s site.

The four-year medical course commenced in September 2003 and is open to graduates of any discipline. There is an annual intake of 87 home/EU students who are based in Derby for the first 18 months of their course. For the Clinical Years, these students will combine with the students from the five-year course and whilst on placement will rotate around many of the teaching hospitals in Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Lincolnshire, and in the community. Experiencing different sites across the counties is an educational and desirable feature of your training. Currently our students are on placements at the following hospitals:

Nottinghamshire

Queens Medical Centre, City Hospital and Highbury Hospital, Nottingham
Kingsmill Hospital and Highbury Hospital, Mansfield
Newark Hospital, Newark-on-Trent
Derbyshire

Royal Derby Hospital, Derby
Chesterfield Royal Hospital, Chesterfield

Lincolnshire
Lincoln County Hospital, Lincoln
Grantham Hospital, Grantham
Pilgrim Hospital, Boston
The course aims to widen access to a broader range of applicants than school leavers with A levels. It is intended to build on the intellectual skills acquired by students who have undertaken a first degree.

After successful completion of the Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (BM BS) degree, graduates are required to undergo a further two years of foundation doctor training. Full registration is granted by the GMC at the end of the first year of this training. Non-British nationals graduating from UK medical schools are subject to work-permit restrictions.

Eligibility

Graduates will need a minimum of a lower second-class degree and must apply through UCAS, course code A101.

In addition you must have sat the GAMSAT examination (which is designed to ensure the entrants have the requisite knowledge and reasoning skills) in either September 2014 or September 2015.

NB: registration for GAMSAT and application to the School of Medicine via UCAS are separate processes and both are required for admission to the graduate entry course.

A great deal of emphasis is placed on work experience, as we want to ensure that you are making a well-informed choice about your future career, something which a few days shadowing would not provide. Relevant experience could include volunteering in a care home, working as a healthcare assistant within a hospital.

You also need to complete a satisfactory health check and criminal records checks - for more information see our "Fitness to Practise" information.

English language requirements

IELTS 7.5 (no less than 7.0 in any element)
Pearson Test of English (Academic) 74

Why choose this course?

  • Open the doors to new career opportunities as a researcher in academic, commercial or public sector settings
  • Work with psychology experts at the cutting edge of their specialist areas
  • Harness our sophisticated psychology research facilities, including a video observation suite and the latest eye tracking equipment

  • Gain the ideal platform for progression to a PhD

About this course:

Our Master of Research (MRes) programme will develop you into a high-calibre, reflective psychology specialist skilled in delivering evidence-based research. The course is designed for those who wish to enhance their career prospects by taking their research skills to the next level. It differs from more traditional taught masters programmes – such as an MSc –because of its focus on enhancing research methods and skills. Covering both quantitative and qualitative approaches, you will gain a thorough grounding in the methods and processes which underpin original research in psychology and then conduct your own major independent research project under expert supervision.

The course offers an ideal foundation for students who aspire to doctoral studies in the future but may not be able to commit to a PhD at this stage of their career. If, however, you decide to progress to a PhD at Derby, your MRes qualification will count as stage one of your doctoral programme.

You will be allocated a research project supervisor who will oversee your progress and mentor you through your development as an active, engaged researcher. We encourage you to design research projects which relate directly to real-world issues. There may be opportunities to work with some of our partners across the voluntary and charitable sectors to deliver research findings which help them shape their future services. We provide every opportunity for you to tailor your studies to match your current job role, your personal and professional interests, and your career ambitions.

Your Career

Skills in research, analysis and evaluation are increasingly valued by employers across many different sectors. The thorough understanding of psychological theory, research and methodology you gain from your MRes studies will therefore give you a distinct advantage as you pursue your career.

Your qualification will act as a vital stepping stone, enabling you to apply for:

  • Funded studentships to pursue your research at doctoral level
  • Employment as a researcher or research assistant on major projects in an academic, commercial or public sector setting
  • Employment in organisations which support the development of individuals throughout the lifespan
  • Further professional training and registered routes into professions such as counselling, clinical psychology and educational psychology – for those who have already met Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership (GBC) of the British Psychological Society.

If you are already working, the MRes can also provide excellent continuing professional development and lifelong learning opportunities, helping you become a more psychologically aware practitioner.

If you are interested in progressing to a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) at the University of Derby, your MRes qualification will count as stage one of your doctoral programme.

About the course:

A comprehensive course
This comprehensive course combines academic and practical teaching to prepare you for, or further, your career in the petroleum industry. Having received accreditation from the Geological Society of London, you can be confident that the course is topical and well regarded across the sector.

If you’re an international student, you must apply for the full masters course and study it over one year, starting in September. If you’re a UK or EU resident, you can study full-time or part-time. Modules are offered in four-week blocks to allow short periods of study leave from work.
Experienced teachers
Our tutors all have extensive experience and will give you a real insight into the oil industry. Teaching takes place in the classroom, laboratory, and in the field. You’ll also receive professional training to make sure your communication skills are up to industry standards.

Learning stages
The Postgraduate Certificate stage is an intensive 12-week course taught in the Autumn semester. The high degree of industry involvement means that you’ll benefit from the latest thinking in the areas of petroleum geology, petroleum techniques, and geological and commercial risk. Because it’s a short course, UK/EU students may choose to leave after gaining the Certificate and apply for entry-level work.

Alternatively, you can take the three Postgraduate Diploma modules in sequence in the Spring semester and then move on to the Independent Project for your MSc in May. If you choose to study part-time, you’ll need to be in Derby for four-week periods for each module.

The MSc stage will give you specialist knowledge and experience, because your independent project will involve working with data to address a current industry issue. You can study full-time for four months at Derby during the summer semester, or part-time while you work.

About the course:

The programme gives you solid experience of clinical dance movement therapy practice, supervision and work in education, as well as further closed group work. The main emphasis is on your work in a clinical environment and using creative skills to explore self-expression. You will be allocated a personal tutor who'll be responsible for monitoring your overall progress. As well as taught components, you'll be required to engage in personal therapy as this is a requirement for professional registration. This is a private arrangement and the cost is not included in the fees. Individual or group therapy is acceptable.

This course is accredited by the Association for Dance Movement Psychotherapy UK, so you can be confident that you'll be learning the most up to date thinking on dance movement psychotherapy.

During the course you'll build up your experience of clinical dance movement therapy, and use your creative skills to explore self-expression.

It's important to understand the history of dance movement psychotherapy from the early pioneers through to the current thinking. You'll cover concepts such as the theory and practice of the art form and the importance of improvisation, creativity and play. You'll also use and reflect on psychotherapeutic theory, while considering the implications for placement and practice. Because anatomy and physiology are essential to your understanding of movement and its relevance for psychotherapy, you'll also explore this during the course.

We've excellent facilities including our new dance studio, and have close links with Déda, the Derby dance centre.

You'll be allocated a personal tutor who will be responsible for monitoring your overall progress. As well as the taught components, you'll need to take part in personal therapy throughout the course, which can be individual or group therapy, because this is a requirement for professional registration as a dance movement psychotherapist.

You'll need to undertake health screening at the start of the course to monitor your fitness to practice.

Why choose this course:

• The IOA Diploma is a sought after accredited qualification which enables you to become an Associate Member of the Institute of Acoustics.
• The programme is regarded as the leading specialist qualification for the professional practitioner in acoustics.
• We're the leading centre in the Midlands for this one year part time course.

About the course:

This course is perfect for you if you're looking for a specialist qualification as a professional practitioner in acoustics. You'll become a member of the Institute of Acoustics (IOA) which will help to set you apart from other professionals in this field.

It also means that if you went on to further study, for example the MSc Applied Acoustics course, you could miss out the Postgraduate Certificate level and go straight onto the Postgraduate Diploma.

The course only takes one year to complete and you'll study on a Tuesday afternoon and evening starting in September. The examinations are held in June and you'll need to complete a project which usually takes place over the summer months.

Because the course is part time it means you can fit it around your work and life commitments, but if you are in employment you'll need to ensure that you can come in to Derby on a Tuesday afternoon to study.

You'll be taught by a dedicated and friendly team who are experienced acousticians with most having full membership of the IOA. And you'll study at the leading centre in the Midlands for this course.

Everyone must take the following modules:

• General Principles of Acoustics
• Laboratory Module
• Project.

You will then take a further two specialist modules from:

• Regulation and Assessment of Noise
• Noise and Vibration Control Engineering
• Acoustics in Buildings
• Environmental Noise: Measurement, Prediction and Control.

You'll be assessed by both coursework and examination. Coursework will include laboratory reports and a small number of assignments set by the IOA.
The General Principles of Acoustics module provides a foundation for further study and deals with the nature and behaviour of sound and vibration, its measurement, response of humans to sound and vibration, and basic noise control engineering. The project is an opportunity for you to carry out an individual study in the area of acoustics.
