This programme produces motivated clinician scientists capable of obtaining high clinical standards in an objective manner. The Doctorate in Dental Surgery (DDS) will enable you to develop the ability to design, undertake and apply appropriate research to relevant clinical problems.

Applications for a position on this programme as a specialist trainee in orthodontics will be made through the national recruitment process, which is likely to be advertised in the British Dental Journal.

We will also accept university-based applications from international applicants, followed by shortlisting and interviews of selected candidates.

There are usually eight positions for home students: one each in Taunton, Yeovil, Plymouth, Portsmouth and Exeter, and three opportunities in Bristol/Bath. There is also the opportunity for two overseas students in Bristol/Bath and one overseas student in Bristol/Swindon.

Programme structure

The programme is broadly divided between academic modules, treatment of patients under close supervision and a research project.

The academic teaching component is a comprehensive lecture/seminar programme covering all aspects of orthodontics, relevant basic medical sciences and research methods. We have developed a programme with both internal and external speakers who have demonstrated excellence in their chosen topics. Please see the school website for a full list of areas covered by the modular programme.

Treatment sessions with your own patients, diagnostic clinics, case seminars and topic-related tutorials are included in the teaching. To increase the diversity of clinical experience, you will also be supervised by several different consultants during your training. A number of treated cases are prepared for the MOrth examinations of the Royal College of Surgeons in the summer of the third year of the programme.

As part of the programme, students carry out an investigation and prepare a research dissertation, which must include a critical review of the relevant literature. It is also a requirement that material is prepared and submitted for publication in a peer-reviewed journal during the three-year programme. Projects are diverse and cover contemporary areas of clinical practice and laboratory-based research in orthodontics. This research is examined in the autumn of the final year.

This programme orientates internationally qualified dental graduates to that of a UK dental practitioner by providing a comprehensive grounding in six key training areas: basic sciences and their application to modern day dental practice, applied principles of clinical dentistry, clinical skills, communication skills, professionalism, management and leadership.

The course is delivered under three broad headings:

1. Taught
Students will acquire knowledge and understanding of:

-Relevant basic sciences including anatomy, physiology, immunology, microbiology and molecular biology with respect to health and how these are altered in disease states
-Patho-physiological and anatomical basis for clinical signs of oral and craniofacial health and disease
-Relationships between dental disease, population risk factors and the preventative measures

And integrate this knowledge to dental areas through discussions in:

-Basic and clinical science associated with pharmacology and therapeutics used in dentistry
-The science underpinning the key properties of dental materials and evaluate their clinical applications


2. Clinical
Students' clinical skills will be augmented through practical, laboratory based sessions using typodont teeth set in a manikin head.

-Operative skills will be taught to ensure students can undertake skilled, competent and safe dental procedures including: cavity design, extra-coronal restorations and non-surgical endodontic treatment.
-Simulated clinical techniques will be undertaken and the student will be introduced to decision making processes leading to tooth loss and replacement and execution of appropriate operative techniques for all stages of planned prosthodontic treatment (excluding bridges and implants) in conjunction, as necessary, with other specialists and technicians.

Students will observe current UK dental practise via clinics in oral medicine, oral and maxillofacial surgery, periodontology, paediatrics, prosthodontics, radiology and orthodontics.

Tutoring in Objective Structured Clinical Reasoning Examinations (OSCE) and Structured Clinical Reasoning (SCR) Exams will be carried out using the advanced facilities in the state of the art dental skills laboratory.

3. Research
The research component consists of a structured literature review and clinical audit report. Students will acquire knowledge and understanding of:

-Critical appraisal and analysis of scientific and clinical literature
-How clinical audit identifies problems in clinical service and helps formulate solutions
-Appropriate tools for searching the literature (search engines, web-based libraries, electronic documents)

Students will develop the analytical skills to be able to:

-Critically appraise, analyse and evaluate scientific papers and clinical literature applying the principles of evidence based dentistry
-Evaluate evidence of the latest developments in Dentistry
-Communication skills will be developed throughout the taught, clinical and research elements of the course with specific topic presentations during seminars as well as through journal club reports and presentations on dental and clinical governance topics.

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery is the specialty concerned with the diagnosis and management of diseases, injuries and defects affecting the mouth, jaws, face and neck.

All units are based on the speciality of oral surgery but within the wider context of maxillofacial surgery. The three year course provides specialist oral surgery clinical training. You will undertake minor oral surgery under supervision, carried out under local anaesthesia, conscious sedation and general anaesthesia. You will also attend theatre to assist and observe major surgery and attend consultation clinics, trauma clinics, ward rounds and carry out ward duties.

The clinical component of the course consists of the following units:
-Surgical Basic Sciences (Basic surgical science, preoperative and postoperative care) and Patient Care (Assessing patients, medical aspects of patient care and control of pain and anxiety)
-Reflective Oral Surgery Practices
-Dental Tissues (Infections and inflammation of the teeth and jaws, removal of teeth and surgical implantology)
-Bone: Disease and Injury (Diseases of bone and the maxillary sinus, oral and maxillofacial injuries)
-Soft Tissues (Cysts, mucosal disease, premalignancy and malignancy)

You will attend weekly interactive seminars led by senior staff and some invited guest speakers. Some of these have actor patients present to allow you to rehearse your clinical skills. If you study the full three year MSc you will also attend external teaching events such as residential blocks for basic science applied to surgery at the Royal College of Surgeons of England.

There are four separate units: Research Methods (15 credits); Biostatistics (15 credits); Specialist Clinical Component (90 credits); and, for MSc students, a dissertation (60 credits).

In the cases of the Research Methods and Biostatistics units, the aim is to enable you to become competent in the design, data collection, and simple analysis and interpretation of clinical research projects.

The aim of the Specialist Clinical Component is to give you an understanding of the scientific basis of oral and maxillofacial surgery with particular emphasis on current theories relevant to the diagnosis, treatment planning and clinical management of patients. The evidence base supporting clinical surgical practice is emphasised.

The Specialist Clinical Component permits observation of a wide range of surgery including facial trauma, implant and reconstructive, cancer and reconstructive, salivary gland and orthognathic surgery, as well as participation in dentoalveolar surgery.

The aim of the dissertation (for MSc students only) is to offer research training in identification, formulation and implementation of a specific research project. The research project is in line with the research themes of control of pain and anxiety or surgical implantology or oral cancer and health services research.

Teaching and learning

Coursework and assessment

Assessment is by essay and SBA's throughout the course and related to the taught units. You will also maintain a clinical surgical logbook and undertake a clinical competency test. There is also an oral examination.

This programme develops students’ knowledge and enhances clinical skills through hands-on clinical experience in oral surgery. Following a series of study days and clinical skills teaching, students will undertake a clinical attachment within the University of Bristol Dental Hospital where they will treat oral surgery patients under the supervision of hospital specialists.

Students will spend two days every month, for up to nine months, attending outpatient clinics and operating under close supervision in the oral surgery department of the School of Oral and Dental Sciences, University of Bristol Dental Hospital.

Our programme has been specifically designed for experienced dental practitioners who want to develop their skills in providing clinical oral surgery for their patients in practice.

There will be a mixed delivery approach, including direct clinical supervision, small group teaching, clinical skills sessions (eg suture simulation), and self-directed learning using virtual learning environment material

This programme focuses on contemporary practice, teaching evidence-based principles and systems to ensure an optimal outcome for the patient and practitioner.

Applicants will be invited to an Advice day held at Greenbank Building at UCLan, where prospective students will be given an opportunity to talk to the Course Leader and tour the specialist facilities including the UCLan Dental Clinic where students will carry out their 15 clinical placements throughout their course in which we provide the patients.

Completion of this programme of study provides 60 allowable credits towards the FGDP (UK) Career Pathway (Clinical); 30 allowable credits towards the Career Pathway (Other).

LEARNING ENVIRONMENT AND ASSESSMENT

The programme encompasses a blended learning approach and consists of a combination of lectures, seminars, workshops, clinic training sessions and laboratory visits. Each person will be assigned a personal tutor for the entire programme.

Our MSc/PGDip Oral Surgery programme provides the busy General Dental Practitioner with a part-time educational route to acquire the skills and knowledge required of a Dentist with Special Interest (DwiSI). This programme focuses on contemporary practice, teaching evidence-based principles and systems to ensure an optimal outcome for the patient and practitioner.

During the course (2 years PGDip; 3 years MSc) you will be expected to attend up to 15 study/assessment days per year. Many of these sessions will be within the School of Medicine and Dentistry on the main UCLan Preston Campus, though some sessions will be timetabled in UCLan Dental Clinic, where you will observe, assist and ultimately lead in clinical treatment. To accompany the study days, much of the course content, including lecture notes, PowerPoint slides, videos of lectures and assignments will be delivered to you via the University’s Blackboard Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) allowing you to both prepare work for study days and undertake additional work independently from your home location.

Work in the early part of the course will comprise plenary lectures and practical sessions in our state-of-the-art phantom head facility and work on pigs head sand similar systems. As you move through the course you will progress to working on live patients under close supervision in UCLan Dental Clinic. Here skills will be developed and assessed through Direct Observations of Procedural Skills (DOPS). The academic underpinning that supports this discipline will be developed though plenary lectures, directed reading and case-based discussions, which you and others in the group will be expected to prepare and lead. Group sizes are generally small (typically 12 per cohort) leading to an informal and supportive learning environment where you can ensure that your own learning needs are being met.

This distinctive programme is the result of a joint partnership between Edge Hill University and Implant Centres of Excellence (ICE Ltd). It will train you in the practical application of dental implantology in the clinic, combining theoretical knowledge with the requirement to successfully complete a range of cases at a clinical hub, supported by a team of experienced dentists and a clinical mentor.

You will be introduced to new technologies such as minimally invasive computer guided surgery and explore CAD-CAM restorative treatment techniques, infection control, medico-legal and ethical considerations, and human factors. There is a focus on teamwork, collaboration and reflection with the overall aim of nurturing an evidence-based approach to practice and enhancing the quality of patient care.

Upon successful completion of the programme you will have developed the core clinical skills and competency in the restorative and surgical aspects of implant dentistry, as well as acquiring essential skills in critical analysis and research.

What will I study?

The overarching aim of the modules is to equip you with an advanced knowledge base and core clinical skills in all aspects of implant dentistry.

You will examine the reasons and consequences associated with tooth loss, with a focus on prevention, and immerse yourself in the application of advanced skills in the assessment, diagnosis and planning of surgical implant treatment.

You will be introduced to research methodology and research skills, undertake a critical appraisal of relevant literature, adopt an evidence-based approach to clinical decision making, and conduct a significant piece of investigative enquiry through the completion of a dissertation.

How will I study?

Taught sessions are typically run in block study days on a part-time basis so that attendance can be incorporated with clinical work.

Teaching methods include lectures by consultant dentists, specialists and expert clinicians in implant dentistry, alongside group work, objective structured clinical examinations (OSCEs), seminar presentations and interactive sessions. There will be strong emphasis on literature analysis and critique as well as development of case presentation skills.

The delivery of the module introducing you to the research process will be more blended and there will be academic and clinical supervision to support you in completing your dissertation.

Several modules contain practice competencies that need to be met so a significant amount of time for learning is allocated to work in practice with support provided by a clinical mentor.

In addition to this, there will be set days of attendance within the clinical hub at ICE Ltd, with the possibility of attending additional optional sessions there if desired.

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed both formatively and summatively using a combination of theoretical and practical methods. These will enable you to demonstrate successful acquisition of the necessary academic knowledge and clinical competencies in implant dentistry.

Assessment methods will include essay writing, critical appraisal of research papers, preparing research proposals, delivering case presentations or treatment plans, and conducting practice-based pilot studies or a cycle of clinical audits.

Clinical portfolios will be assessed to allow you to demonstrate your engagement with the evidence-base that supports practice and the application of best practice guidance to your clinical work.

Who will be teaching me?

You will be taught by a combination of academic experts from Edge Hill University who are opinion leaders in implant dentistry and a team of dentists from ICE Ltd who work in community and hospital settings, all with extensive experience of teaching and supporting dentists in oral surgery and implantology.

- develop skills of research, design and data analysis in both qualitative and quantitative research

- apply the principles of evidence-based practice in health care settings

Assessment methods

To complete the Postgraduate Certificate students must:

- Attend and complete the 2 compulsory modules and 1 option module.

Students will also be expected to complete three written assignments, usually of no more than 4000 words, one on each of the chosen modules above.

With the exception of the online modules, the EBHC modules are based on an eight week study cycle. Week One is a preparatory week where you may be required to undertake some pre-reading and to familiarise yourself with the Virtual Learning Environment. During Week Two you are required to attend the face to face teaching week in Oxford. This is followed by an additional six weeks where you are expected to participate in online activities and submit your assignment

Level and demands

Candidates will, in all but exceptional circumstances be admitted to the Postgraduate Certificate with optional progression on successful completion to the Diploma, provided that a candidate:

- has successfully completed the final year of the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery or Bachelor of Dental Surgery or equivalent; or

- has an appropriate degree or equivalent professional qualification in a profession allied to medicine with post-qualification experience

Applicants will be expected to demonstrate an approach to their study which includes demonstrable skills of critical analysis, wide contextual knowledge and the ability to manage their own time.

Additionally candidates should:

- have a good working knowledge of email, internet, word processing and Windows applications (for communications with course members, course team and administration)

- show evidence of the ability to commit time to study and an employer's commitment to make time available to study, complete course work and attend course and University events and modules

Successful candidates will normally provide evidence of all of the following:

- A professional interest in Health Research, evidenced by prior experience, qualification and work

- Motivation and ability to complete the course
